- We present new radial velocities for 306 bright (R<16) galaxies in a 77{deg}^2^ region of the Shapley supercluster, measured with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. The galaxies we measured were uniformly distributed over the survey area, in contrast to previous samples which were concentrated in several rich Abell clusters. Most of the galaxies (230) were members of the Shapley supercluster: they trace out two previously unknown sheets of galaxies linking the Abell clusters of the supercluster. In a 44{deg}^2^ area of the supercluster excluding the Abell clusters, these sheets alone represent an overdensity of a factor of 2.0+/-0.2 compared to a uniform galaxy distribution. The supercluster is not flattened in the Declination direction as has been suggested in previous papers. Within our survey area the new galaxies contribute an additional 50% to the known contents of the Shapley supercluster, with a corresponding increase in its contribution to the motion of the Local Group.

- We present the discoveries of a brown dwarf (BD) and a low-mass star from the Kepler and K2 missions. The newly discovered BD is EPIC 212036875b and the low-mass star is KOI-607b. EPIC 212036875b has a mass of M_b_=52.3+/-1.9 M_J_, a radius of R_b_=0.874+/-0.017 R_J_, and orbits its host star in P=5.169885+/-0.000027 days. Its host star is a late F-type star with M_*_=1.288+/-0.065 M_{sun}_, R_*_= 1.498+/-0.025 R_{sun}_, and T_eff_=6238+/-60 K. KOI-607b has a mass of M_b_=95.1+/-3.4 M_J_, a radius of R_b_=1.089+/-0.089 R_J_, and an orbital period of P=5.89399148+/-0.00000060 days. The primary star in the KOI-607 system is a G dwarf with M_*_=0.993+/-0.052 M_{sun}_, R_*_= 0.915+/-0.031 R_{sun}_, and T_eff_=5418+/-87 K. We also revisit a BD, CWW 89Ab, that was previously published by Nowak et al. 2017AJ....153..131N (under the designation EPIC 219388192b). CWW 89Ab is one of two known transiting BDs associated with a star cluster, which illustrates the need for more BDs with accurate masses, radii, and reliable age determinations to test theoretical models. We find that the newly discovered BD, EPIC 212036875b, falls in the middle of the so-called BD desert, indicating that EPIC 212036875b is either a particularly rare object, or the BD desert may not be so dry after all.

- We present new velocities for 62 globular clusters in M104 (NGC 4594, the Sombrero Galaxy), 56 from 2dF on the AAT and 6 from Hydra on WIYN. Combined with previous data, we have a total sample of 108 M104 globular cluster velocities, extending to 20' radius (~60kpc), along with BVR photometry for each of these. We use this wide-field data set to study the globular cluster kinematics and dark matter content of M104 out to 10' radius (30kpc).

- Galactic globular clusters (GC) are known to have multiple stellar populations and be characterised by similar chemical features, e.g., O-Na anti-correlation. While second-population stars, identified by their Na overabundance, have been found from the main sequence turnoff up to the tip of the red giant branch in various Galactic GCs, asymptotic giant branch stars have rarely been targeted. Here we present the results of our high-resolution spectroscopic study of a sample of AGB and RGB stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808. We derived accurate Na abundances for 31 AGB and 40 RGB stars in this cluster. Comparable Na abundance dispersions are found for our AGB and RGB samples, and we conclude that NGC 2808 has Na-rich second-population AGB stars, which turn out to be even more numerous - in relative terms - than their Na-poor counterparts (on the AGB) and the Na-rich stars on the RGB.

- We analyze high-resolution spectra of a large sample of asymptotic giant branch AGB and red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic GCs NGC 104, NGC 6121, and NGC 6809 obtained with FLAMES/GIRAFFE at ESO/VLT, and determine their Na abundances. This is the first time that the AGB stars in NGC 6809 are targeted. We find that NGC 104 and NG 6809 have comparable AGB and RGB Na abundance distributions, while NGC 6121 shows a lack of very Na-rich AGB stars. Moreover, to investigate the dependence of AGB Na abundance dispersion on GC parameters, we compare the AGB [Na/H] distributions of a total of nine GCs, with five determined by ourselves with homogeneous method and four from literature, covering a wide range of GC parameters. Their Na abundances and multiple populations of AGB stars form complex picture. In some GCs, AGB stars have similar Na abundances and/or second-population fractions as their RGB counterparts, while some GCs do not have Na-rich second-population AGB stars, and various cases exist between the two extremes. In addition, the fitted relations between fractions of the AGB second population and GC global parameters show that the AGB second-population fraction slightly anticorrelates with GC central concentration, while no robust dependency can be confirmed with other GC parameters.

- The importance of long-period binaries on the formation and evolution of planetary nebulae is still rather poorly understood, in part due to the lack of central star systems known to comprise such long-period binaries. Here, we report on the latest results from the on-going Mercator-HERMES survey for variability in the central stars of planetary nebulae. We present a study of the central stars of NGC 1514, BD+30 623, the spectrum of which shows features associated with a hot nebular progenitor as well as a possible A-type companion. Cross-correlation of high-resolution HERMES spectra against synthetic spectra shows the system to be a highly eccentric (e~0.5), double-lined binary with a period of ~3300 days. Previous studies indicated that the cool component might be a Horizontal Branch star of mass ~0.55M_{sun}_ but the observed radial velocity amplitudes rule out such a low mass. Assuming the nebular symmetry axis and binary orbital plane are perpendicular, the data are more consistent with a post-main-sequence star ascending towards the Giant Branch. We also present the continued monitoring of the central star of LoTr 5, HD 112313, which has now completed one full cycle, allowing the orbital period (P~2700-days) and eccentricity (e~0.3) to be derived. To date, the orbital periods of BD+30 623 and HD 112313 are the longest to have been measured spectroscopically in the central stars of planetary nebulae. Furthermore, these systems, along with BD+33 2642, comprise the only spectroscopic wide-binary central stars currently known.

- Using photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy we investigate for the first time the physical connection between the open clusters NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22. Based on new CCD photometry we report their spatial proximity and common age of ~70Myr. Based on high-resolution spectra collected using the HERMES and UCLES spectrographs on the Anglo-Australian telescope, we present radial velocities and abundances for Fe, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, and Ni. The measured radial velocities are -38.63+/-2.25km/s for NGC 5617 and -38.46+/-2.08km/s for Trumpler 22. The mean metallicity of NGC 5617 was found to be [Fe/H]=-0.18+/-0.02 and for Trumpler 22 was found to be [Fe/H]=-0.17+/-0.04. The two clusters share similar abundances across the other elements, indicative of a common chemical enrichment history of these clusters. Together with common motions and ages we confirm that NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22 are a primordial binary cluster pair in the Milky Way.

- We discuss the results of a mass decomposition of two spiral galaxies, NGC 6824 and UGC 11919. In a previous analysis of the Hyperleda catalog, the galaxies were identified as having a peculiar dynamical mass-to-light ratio. The aim of this study is to confirm or disprove the preliminary findings, indicating a non-standard stellar initial mass function (IMF) for the galaxies. The surface photometry in B,V, and R bands was carried out with the Apache Point 0.5-m telescope and the HI data cubes were obtained with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). Photometric profiles were decomposed into bulge and exponential disk components.

- We provide new evidence that NGC 2451A is undoubtedly a young open cluster, although sparsely populated. New cluster membership has been derived from relative proper motions of 5868 stars. In total, 136 stars down to V~15 5 have membership probability P{mu}>=2%. New CCD BV photometry indicates that about 70 stars are indeed main-sequence stars of NGC 2451A. This is also supported by our measurements of radial velocities. A total of 34 very likely cluster members yield a mean heliocentric radial velocity for NGC 2451A equal to +22.9km/s. The high quality of our BV photometry, a confirmation of cluster membership from proper motions and radial velocities, and a recently obtained metallicity estimate for several cluster stars allow us to perform a precise isochrone fit. The Yale isochrones, updated by the latest available input physics, have been fitted to the cluster's color-magnitude diagram, yielding a distance modulus V_0_-M_V_ in the range 6.35 to 6.38, which is in excellent agreement with the distance modulus (m-M)_0_=6.38 derived from the Hipparcos data recently by van Leeuwen and Robichon et al. (1998, Cat. <J/A+AS/130/157>). We have used the high-resolution spectra acquired using the Hydra multiobject spectrograph at the WIYN telescope (Kitt Peak, Arizona) in 1997 November and 1998 October.
