- The Eastern Banded Structure (EBS) and Hydra I halo overdensities are very nearby (d~10kpc) objects discovered in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. Previous studies of the region have shown that EBS and Hydra I are spatially coincident, cold structures at the same distance, suggesting that Hydra I may be the EBS's progenitor. We combine new wide-field Dark Energy Camera (DECam) imaging and MMT/Hectochelle spectroscopic observations of Hydra I with SDSS archival spectroscopic observations to quantify Hydra I's present-day chemodynamical properties, and to infer whether it originated as a star cluster or dwarf galaxy. While previous work using shallow SDSS imaging assumed a standard old, metal-poor stellar population, our deeper DECam imaging reveals that Hydra I has a thin, well-defined main sequence turnoff of intermediate age (~5-6Gyr) and metallicity ([Fe/H]=-0.9dex). We measure statistically significant spreads in both the iron and alpha-element abundances of {sigma}_[Fe/H]_=0.13+/-0.02dex and {sigma}_[{alpha}/Fe]_=0.09+/-0.03dex, respectively, and place upper limits on both the rotation and its proper motion. Hydra I's intermediate age and [Fe/H] --as well as its low [{alpha}/Fe], apparent [Fe/H] spread, and present-day low luminosity-- suggest that its progenitor was a dwarf galaxy, which has subsequently lost more than 99.99% of its stellar mass.

- After a compilation of HI data from 611 references and new observations made in Nancay, we produce a catalog of homogenized HI data for 16781 galaxies. The homogenization is made using the EPIDEMIC method from which all data are progressively converted into the adopted standard. The result is a catalog giving: 1) the logarithm of twice the maximum rotation velocity, log2V_M_^sini^, converted to the system of Mathewson et al. (1996ApJS..107...97M). This quantity is given without correction for inclination; 2) the HI magnitude, m_21_, (area of the 21-cm line width expressed in magnitude) converted to the flux system of Theureau et al. (1998A&AS..130..333T); 3) the HI velocity, V_HI_, expressed with the optical definition (i.e., using wavelengths instead frequencies). The typical uncertainties are: 0.04 for log2V_M_^sini^, 0.25mag for m_21_ and 9km/s for V_HI_.

- We investigate the effect of the environment on the Faber-Jackson (FJ) relation, using a sample of 384 nearby elliptical galaxies and estimating objectively their environment on the typical scale of galaxy clusters. We show that the intrinsic scatter of the FJ relation is significantly reduced when ellipticals in high-density environments are compared to ellipticals in low-density ones. This result, which holds in a limited range of overdensities, is likely to provide an important observational link between scaling relations and formation mechanisms in galaxies.

- Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) are stars ejected completely out of the Milky Way by three-body interactions with the massive black hole in the Galactic center. We describe 643 new spectroscopic observations from our targeted survey for HVSs. We find a significant (3.5{sigma}) excess of B-type stars with large velocities +275km/s<V_rf_<450km/s and distances d>10kpc that are most plausibly explained as a new class of HVSs: stars ejected from the Galactic center on bound orbits. If a Galactic center ejection origin is correct, the distribution of HVSs on the sky should be anisotropic for a survey complete to a fixed limiting apparent magnitude. The unbound HVSs in our survey have a marginally anisotropic distribution on the sky, consistent with the Galactic center ejection picture.

- We have used fibre spectroscopy to establish cluster membership and examine pre-main-sequence (PMS) lithium depletion for low-mass stars (spectral types F to M) in the sparse young (~30Myr) cluster IC 4665. We present a filtered candidate list of 40 stars that should contain 75 per cent of single cluster members with 11.5<V<18 in the central square degree of the cluster. Whilst F- and G-type stars in IC 4665 have depleted little or no lithium, the K- and early M-type stars have depleted more Li than expected when compared with similar stars in other clusters of known age. An empirical age estimate based on Li depletion among the late-type stars of IC 4665 would suggest that it is older than 100Myr.

- We report six new inflated hot Jupiters (HATS-25b through HATS-30b) discovered using the HATSouth global network of automated telescopes. The planets orbit stars with V magnitudes in the range of ~12-14 and have masses in the largely populated 0.5M_J_--0.7M_J_ region of parameter space but span a wide variety of radii, from 1.17R_J_ to 1.75R_J_. HATS-25b, HATS-28b, HATS-29b, and HATS-30b are typical inflated hot Jupiters (R_p_=1.17--1.26R_J_) orbiting G-type stars in short period (P=3.2-4.6 days) orbits. However, HATS-26b (R_p_=1.75R_J_, P=3.3024days) and HATS-27b (R_p_=1.50R_J_, P=4.6370days) stand out as highly inflated planets orbiting slightly evolved F stars just after and in the turn-off points, respectively, which are among the least dense hot Jupiters, with densities of 0.153g/cm^3^ and 0.180g/cm^3^, respectively. All the presented exoplanets but HATS-27b are good targets for future atmospheric characterization studies, while HATS-27b is a prime target for Rossiter-McLaughlin monitoring in order to determine its spin-orbit alignment given the brightness (V=12.8) and stellar rotational velocity (vsini~9.3km/s) of the host star. These discoveries significantly increase the number of inflated hot Jupiters known, contributing to our understanding of the mechanism(s) responsible for hot Jupiter inflation.

- We present a library of high-resolution (R~45000) and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N>=200) near-infrared spectra for stars of a wide range of spectral types and luminosity classes. The spectra were obtained with the Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrograph covering the full range of the H (1.496-1.780{mu}m) and K (2.080-2.460{mu}m) atmospheric windows. The targets were primarily selected for being MK standard stars covering a wide range of effective temperatures and surface gravities, with metallicities close to the solar value. Currently, the library includes flux-calibrated and telluric-absorption-corrected spectra of 84 stars, with prospects for expansion to provide denser coverage of the parametric space. Throughout the H and K atmospheric windows, we identified spectral lines that are sensitive to Teff or logg and defined corresponding spectral indices. We also provide their equivalent widths (EWs). For those indices, we derive empirical relations between the measured EWs and the stellar atmospheric parameters. Therefore, the derived empirical equations can be used to calculate the Teff and logg of a star without requiring stellar atmospheric models.

- A detailed model atmosphere analysis of high-resolution and high S/N CCD spectra of IIPeg has yielded for the first time a self-consistent set of fundamental parameters of the primary component: T_eff_=4600K, logg=3.2, [M/H]=-0.4, {xi}_t_=2.0km/s. In addition, 121 new high quality radial velocity measurements allowed us to determine improved orbital parameters, resulting in a new orbital ephemeris of T_conj_=2449582.9268+6.724333E. The position of the primary of II Peg in the HR diagram with the new parameters corresponds to a K2 IV star with mass =~0.8M_{sun}_. The evolved character of the star is confirmed by the C/N ratio, which is reduced significantly relative to the solar value. The unspotted V magnitude of the star of 6.9mag is estimated from the observed variations of the TiO bands and quasi-simultaneous photometry. The blend of LiI 6707{AA} is suspected to vary in equivalent width due to spot modulation. The lithium abundance for the unspotted star, Li/H=1.0+/-0.1, is found to be consistent with other post-main sequence chromospherically active stars. Combining all parameters, the radius R=~3.4R_{sun}_ and the inclination i=~60{deg} of the primary are estimated with the assumption that its rotational axis is perpendicular to the orbital plane. The secondary is probably a M0-M3 V star with a mass of about 0.4M_{sun}_.

- We present an updated version of the multicolor light-curve shape method to measure distances to Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), incorporating new procedures for K-correction and extinction corrections. We also develop a simple model to disentangle intrinsic color variations and reddening by dust and expand the method to incorporate U-band light curves and to more easily accommodate prior constraints on any of the model parameters. We apply this method to 133 nearby SNe Ia, including 95 objects in the Hubble flow (cz>=2500km/s), which give an intrinsic dispersion of less than 7% in distance. The Hubble flow sample, which is of critical importance to all cosmological uses of SNe Ia, is the largest ever presented with homogeneous distances.
