- Using spectroscopic observations and photometric light curves of 238 nearby M dwarfs from the MEarth exoplanet transit survey, we examine the relationships between magnetic activity (quantified by H{alpha} emission), rotation period, and stellar age. Previous attempts to investigate the relationship between magnetic activity and rotation in these stars were hampered by the limited number of M dwarfs with measured rotation periods (and the fact that v sin i measurements probe only rapid rotation). However, the photometric data from MEarth allows us to probe a wide range of rotation periods for hundreds of M dwarf stars (from shorter than one to longer than 100 days). Over all M spectral types that we probe, we find that the presence of magnetic activity is tied to rotation, including for late-type, fully convective M dwarfs. We also find evidence that the fraction of late-type M dwarfs that are active may be higher at longer rotation periods compared to their early-type counterparts, with several active, late-type, slowly rotating stars present in our sample. Additionally, we find that all M dwarfs with rotation periods shorter than 26 days (early-type; M1-M4) and 86 days (late-type; M5-M8) are magnetically active. This potential mismatch suggests that the physical mechanisms that connect stellar rotation to chromospheric heating may be different in fully convective stars. A kinematic analysis suggests that the magnetically active, rapidly rotating stars are consistent with a kinematically young population, while slow-rotators are less active or inactive and appear to belong to an older, dynamically heated stellar population.

- As part of the survey component of the Megamaser Cosmology Project, we have discovered a disk megamaser system in the galaxy CGCG 074-064. Using the Green Bank Telescope and the Very Large Array, we have obtained spectral monitoring observations of this maser system at a monthly cadence over the course of two years. We find that the systemic maser features display line-of-sight accelerations of ~4.4km/s/yr that are nearly constant with velocity, while the high-velocity maser features show accelerations that are consistent with zero. We have also used the High-Sensitivity Array to make a high-sensitivity very long baseline interferometric map of the maser system in CGCG 074-064, which reveals that the masers reside in a thin, edge-on disk with a diameter of ~1.5mas (0.6pc). Fitting a three-dimensional warped disk model to the data, we measure a black hole mass of 2.42_-0.20_^+0.22^x10^7^M_{sun}_ and a geometric distance to the system of 87.6_-7.2_^+7.9^Mpc. Assuming a cosmic microwave background-frame recession velocity of 7308+/-150km/s, we constrain the Hubble constant to H_0_=81.0_-6.9_^+7.4^(stat.)+/-1.4(sys.)km/s/Mpc.

- New CORAVEL radial-velocity observations and UBV photometry of 24 red giants in the field of the intermediate-age open cluster Mel 71 are analysed for membership and duplicity. The membership of 16 stars is confirmed, one star is a possible member, and 8 spectroscopic binaries have been discovered, all amongst the cluster stars. Four of their orbits have been determined, with periods ranging from 74 to 1627 days. The mean cluster velocity is +50.14+/-0.14 (s.e.)km/s, and the binary frequency is unusually high (8/16=50%). The best isochrone fit to the observed colour-magnitude digram is obtained for logt=9.00 and Z=0.008. However, some discrepancies appear between the observed and predicted locations of the red giant clump.

- Clusters of galaxies evolve and accrete mass, mostly from small galaxy systems. Our aim is to study the velocity field of the galaxy cluster Abell 780, which is known for the powerful radio source Hydra A at its center and where a spectacular X-ray tail associated with the galaxy LEDA 87445 has been discovered. Our analysis is based on the new spectroscopic data for hundreds of galaxies obtained with the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and the Very Large Telescope. We have constructed a redshift catalog of 623 galaxies and selected a sample of 126 cluster members. We analyze the internal structure of the cluster using a number of techniques. We estimate the mean redshift z=0.0545, the line-of-sight velocity dispersion {sigma}_v_~800km/s, and the dynamical mass M200~5.4x10^14^M_{sun}_. The global properties of Abell 780 are typical of relaxed clusters. On a smaller scale, we can detect the presence of a galaxy group associated with LEDA 87445 in projected phase space. The mean velocity and position of the center of the group agree well with the velocity and position of LEDA 87445. We estimate the following parameters of the collision. The group is characterized by a higher velocity relative to the main system. It is infalling at a rest frame velocity of V_rf_~+870km/s and lies at a projected distance D~1.1Mpc to the south, slightly southeast of the cluster center. The mass ratio between the group and the cluster is ~1:5. We also find evidence of an asymmetry in the velocity distribution of galaxies in the inner cluster region, which might be related to a small low-velocity group detected as a substructure at V_rf_~-750km/s. We conclude that A780, although dynamically relaxed at first sight, contains small substructures that may have some impact on the energetics of the core region.

- Previous studies of open clusters have shown that lithium depletion is not only strongly age dependent but also shows a complex pattern with other parameters that is not yet understood. For pre- and main-sequence late-type stars, these parameters include metallicity, mixing mechanisms, convection structure, rotation, and magnetic activity. We perform a thorough membership analysis for a large number of stars observed within the Gaia-ESO survey (GES) in the field of 20 open clusters, ranging in age from young clusters and associations, to intermediate-age and old open clusters. Based on the parameters derived from the GES spectroscopic observations, we obtained lists of candidate members for each of the clusters in the sample by deriving RV distributions and studying the position of the kinematic selections in the EW(Li) versus Teff plane to obtain lithium members. We used gravity indicators to discard field contaminants and studied [Fe/H] metallicity to further confirm the membership of the candidates. We also made use of studies using recent data from the Gaia DR1 and DR2 releases to assess our member selections. We identified likely member candidates for the sample of 20 clusters observed in GES (iDR4) with UVES and GIRAFFE, and conducted a comparative study that allowed us to characterize the properties of these members, as well as identify field contaminant stars, both lithium-rich giants and non-giant outliers. This work is the first step towards the calibration of the lithium-age relation and its dependence on other GES parameters. During this project we aim to use this relation to infer the ages of GES field stars, and identify their potential membership to young associations and stellar kinematic groups of different ages.

- It is now well known that pre-main sequence models with inflated radii should be taken into account to simultaneously reproduce the colour-magnitude diagram and the lithium depletion pattern observed in young open star clusters. We test a new set of pre-main sequence models including radius inflation due to the presence of starspots or to magnetic inhibition of convection, using five clusters observed by the Gaia-ESO Survey, spanning the age range ~10-100Myr where such effects could be important. The Gaia-ESO Survey radial velocities are combined with astrometry from Gaia EDR3 to obtain clean lists of high-probability members for the five clusters. A Bayesian maximum likelihood method is adopted to fit the observed cluster sequences to theoretical predictions to derive the best model parameters and the cluster reddening and age. Models are calculated with different values of the mixing length parameter ({alpha}_ML_=2.0, 1.5 and 1.0), for the cases with no spots or with effective spot coverage {beta}_spot_=0.2 and 0.4. The models are also compared with the observed lithium depletion patterns. To reproduce the colour-magnitude diagram and the observed lithium depletion pattern in Gamma Vel A and B and in 25 Ori one needs to assume both a reduced convection efficiency, with {alpha}_ML_=1.0, and an effective surface spot coverage of about 20%. We obtained ages of 18^+1.5^_-4.0_ Myr and 21^+3.5^_-3.0_ Myr for Gamma Vel A and B, respectively, and 19^+1.5^_-7.0_ Myr for 25 Ori. However, a single isochrone is not sufficient to account for the lithium dispersion, and an increasing level of spot coverage as mass decreases seems to be required. On the other hand, the older clusters (NGC 2451B at 30^+3.0^_-5.0_Myr, NGC 2547 at 35^+4.0^_-4.0_Myr, and NGC 2516 at 138^+48^_-42_Myr) are consistent with standard models, with {alpha}_ML_=2.0 and no spots, except at low masses: a 20% spot coverage appears to better reproduce the sequence of M-type stars and might explain the observed spread in lithium abundances. The quality of Gaia-ESO data combined with Gaia allows us to gain important insights on pre-main sequence evolution. Models including starspots can provide a consistent explanation of the cluster sequences and lithium abundances observed in young clusters, although a range of starspot coverage is required to fully reproduce the data.

- Young open clusters provide important clues to the interface between the main sequence and pre-main-sequence phases of stellar evolution. The young and nearby open cluster IC 2391 is well-suited to studies of these two evolutionary phases. We establish a bona fide set of cluster members and then analyze this set in terms of binary frequency, projected rotational velocities, [Fe/H], and lithium abundance. In the wake of the Hipparcos distance controversy for the Pleiades, we compare the main-sequence fitting distance modulus to the Hipparcos mean parallax for IC 2391.

- Young field stars are hardly distinguishable from older ones because their space motion rapidly mixes them with the stellar population of the Galactic plane.Nevertheless, a careful target selection allows for young stars to be spotted throughout the sky. We aim to identify additional sources associated with the four young comoving stars that we discovered towards the CO Cepheus void and to provide a comprehensive view of the Cepheus association. Based on multivariate analysis methods, we have built an extended sample of 193 young star candidates, which are the optical and infrared counterparts of ROSAT All-Sky Survey and XMM-Newton X-ray sources. From optical spectroscopic observations, we measured their radial velocity with the cross-correlation technique. We derived their atmospheric parameters and projected rotational velocity with the code ROTFIT. We applied the subtraction of inactive templates to measure the lithium equivalent width, from which we infer their lithium abundance and age. Finally, we studied their kinematics using the second Gaia data release. Our sample is mainly composed of young or active stars and multiple systems. We identify two distinct populations of young stars that are spatially and kinematically separated. Those with an age between 100 and 300Myr are mostly projected towards the Galactic plane. In contrast, 23 of the 37 sources younger than 30Myr are located in the CO Cepheus void, and 21 of them belong to the stellar kinematic group that we previously reported in this sky area. We report a total of 32 bona fide members and nine candidates for this nearby (distance=157+/-10pc) young (age=10-20Myr) stellar association. According to the spatial distribution of its members, the original cluster is already dispersed and partially mixed with the local population of the Galactic plane.

- We present a comprehensive investigation of the {epsilon} Chamaeleontis association, one of several young moving groups spread across the southern sky. We re-assess the putative membership of {epsilon} Cha using the best available proper motion and spectroscopic measurements, including new ANU 2.3-m/Wide Field Spectrograph observations. After applying a kinematic analysis, our final membership comprises 35-41 stars from B9 to mid-M spectral types. Theoretical evolutionary models suggest {epsilon} Cha is 3-5Myr old, distinguishing it as the youngest moving group in the solar neighbourhood. 15 members show 3-22um spectral energy distributions attributable to circumstellar discs, including 11 stars which appear to be actively accreting. {epsilon} Cha's disc and accretion fractions are both consistent with a typical 3-5Myr old population. Multi-epoch spectroscopy reveals three M-type members with broad and highly variable Ha emission as well as several new spectroscopic binaries. We reject 11 stars proposed as members in the literature and suggest they may belong to the background Cha I and II clouds or other nearby young groups. Our analysis underscores the importance of a holistic and conservative approach to assigning young stars to kinematic groups, many of which have only subtly different properties and ill-defined memberships. We conclude with a brief discussion of {epsilon} Cha's connection to the young open cluster eta Cha and the Scorpius- Centaurus OB association. Contrary to earlier studies which assumed eta and {epsilon} Cha are coeval and were born in the same location, we find the groups were separated by ~30pc when eta Cha formed 4-8Myr ago in the outskirts of Sco-Cen, 1-3Myr before the majority of {epsilon} Cha members.
