- We have constructed an all-sky catalog of optical active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with z<0.09, based on optical spectroscopy, from the parent sample of galaxies in the 2MASS Redshift Survey, a near-complete census of the nearby universe. Our catalog consists of 1929 broad-line AGNs and 6562 narrow-line AGNs that satisfy the Kauffmann et al. (2003MNRAS.346.1055K) criteria, of which 3607 also satisfy the Kewley et al. (2006MNRAS.372..961K) criteria. We also report emission-line widths, fluxes, flux errors, and signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) of all the galaxies in our spectroscopic sample, allowing users to customize the selection criteria. Although we uniformly processed the spectra of galaxies from a homogeneous parent sample, inhomogeneities persist owing to the differences in the quality of the obtained spectra, taken with different instruments, and the unavailability of spectra for ~20% of the galaxies. We quantify how the differences in spectral quality affect not only the AGN detection rates but also ratios of broad-line to narrow-line AGNs. We find that the inhomogeneities primarily stem from the continuum S/N in the spectra near the emission lines of interest. We fit for the AGN fraction as a function of continuum S/N and assign AGN likelihoods to galaxies that were not identified as AGNs using the available spectra. This correction results in a catalog suitable for statistical studies. This work also paves the way for a truly homogeneous and complete nearby AGN catalog by identifying galaxies whose AGN status needs to be verified with higher-quality spectra, quantifying the spectral quality necessary to do so.

- We present a study of quasar selection using the supernova fields of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We used a quasar catalog from an overlapping portion of the SDSS Stripe 82 region to quantify the completeness and efficiency of selection methods involving color, probabilistic modeling, variability, and combinations of color/probabilistic modeling with variability. In all cases, we considered only objects that appear as point sources in the DES images. We examine color selection methods based on the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) (Wright et al. 2010AJ....140.1868W) mid-IR W1-W2 color, a mixture of WISE and DES colors (g-i and i-W1), and a mixture of Vista Hemisphere Survey (McMahon et al. 2013Msngr.154...35M) and DES colors (g-i and i-K). For probabilistic quasar selection, we used XDQSO, an algorithm that employs an empirical multi-wavelength flux model of quasars to assign quasar probabilities. Our variability selection uses the multi-band {chi}^2^-probability that sources are constant in the DES Year 1 griz-band light curves. The completeness and efficiency are calculated relative to an underlying sample of point sources that are detected in the required selection bands and pass our data quality and photometric error cuts. We conduct our analyses at two magnitude limits, i<19.8 mag and i<22 mag. For the subset of sources with W1 and W2 detections, the W1-W2 color or XDQSOz method combined with variability gives the highest completenesses of >85% for both i-band magnitude limits and efficiencies of >80% to the bright limit and >60% to the faint limit; however, the giW1 and giW1+variability methods give the highest quasar surface densities. The XDQSOz method and combinations of W1W2/giW1/XDQSOz with variability are among the better selection methods when both high completeness and high efficiency are desired. We also present the OzDES Quasar Catalog of 1263 spectroscopically confirmed quasars from three years of OzDES observation in the 30 deg^2^ of the DES supernova fields. The catalog includes quasars with redshifts up to z~4 and brighter than i=22 mag, although the catalog is not complete up to this magnitude limit.

- We have used the Westerbork array to carry out an unbiased wide-field survey for H I emission features, achieving an RMS sensitivity of about 18mJy/beam at a velocity resolution of 17km/s over 1800deg2 and between -1000<VHel<+6500 km/s. The primary data consists of auto-correlation spectra with an effective angular resolution of 49' FWHM. The survey region is centered approximately on the position of Messier 31 and is Nyquist-sampled over 60x30 deg in RAxDec. In this paper we present the results for our HI detections of external galaxies at positive Local Group Standard of Rest (LGSR) velocity. We detect 155 external galaxies in excess of 8 sigma in integrated HI flux density. Plausible optical associations are found within a 30' search radius for all but one of our HI detections in DSS images, although several are not previously catalogued or do not have published redshift determinations. Our detection without a DSS association is at low galactic latitude. Twenty-three of our objects are detected in HI for the first time. We classify almost half of our detections as "confused", since one or more companions is catalogued within a radius of 30' and a velocity interval of 400km/s. Nine of the detected galaxies fall so near the edges of the survey coverage (either spatially or in velocity) that their parameters can not be reliably determined. These nine objects are excluded from the enclosed table.

- Title:
- Balmer break galaxies at z<1.5 star formation

- We present a spectroscopic study of the properties of 64 Balmer break galaxies that show signs of star formation. The studied sample of star-forming galaxies spans a redshift range from 0.094 to 1.475 with stellar masses in the range 10^8^-10^12^M_{sun}_. The sample also includes eight broad emission line galaxies with redshifts between 1.5<z<3.0. We derived star formation rates (SFRs) from emission line luminosities and investigated the dependence of the SFR and specific SFR (SSFR) on the stellar mass and color. Furthermore, we investigated the evolution of these relations with the redshift. We found that the SFR correlates with the stellar mass; our data is consistent with previous results from other authors in that there is a break in the correlation, which reveals the presence of massive galaxies with lower SFR values (i.e., decreasing star formation). We also note an anticorrelation for the SSFR with the stellar mass. Again in this case, our data is also consistent with a break in the correlation, revealing the presence of massive star-forming galaxies with lower SSFR values, thereby increasing the anticorrelation. These results might suggest a characteristic mass (M_0_) at which the red sequence could mostly be assembled. In addition, at a given stellar mass, high-redshift galaxies have on average higher SFR and SSFR values than local galaxies. Finally, we explored whether a similar trend could be observed with redshift in the SSFR-(u-B) color diagram, and we hypothesize that a possible (u-B)_0_ break color may define a characteristic color for the formation of the red sequence.

- We present a total of 4784 unique broad absorption line quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Third Data Release (Cat. <VII/243>). An automated algorithm was used to match a continuum to each quasar and to identify regions of flux at least 10% below the continuum over a velocity range of at least 1000km/s in the CIV and MgII absorption regions. The model continuum was selected as the best-fit match from a set of template quasar spectra binned in luminosity, emission line width, and redshift, with the power-law spectral index and amount of dust reddening as additional free parameters. We characterize our sample through the traditional balnicity index and a revised absorption index, as well as through parameters such as the width, outflow velocity, fractional depth, and number of troughs.

- Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) have been previously detected using correlation functions and power spectra of the galaxy distribution. In this work, we present a new method for the detection of the real-space structures associated with this feature. These baryon acoustic structures are spherical shells with a relatively small density contrast, surrounding high density central regions. We design a specific wavelet adapted to the search for shells, and exploit the physics of the process by making use of two different mass tracers, introducing a specific statistic to detect the BAO features. We apply our method to the detection of BAO in a galaxy sample drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use the 'Main' catalogue to trace the shells, and the Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) as tracers of the high density central regions.

- Based on XMM-Newton, Chandra, and SDSS data, we investigate the baryon distribution in groups and clusters and its use as a cosmological constraint. For this, we considered a sample of 123 systems with temperatures kT_500_=1.0-9.0keV, total masses in the mass range M_500_=(~10^13^-4x10^15^)h_70_^-1^M_{sun}_, and redshifts 0.02<z<1.3. The gas masses and total masses are derived from X-ray data under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium and spherical symmetry. The stellar masses are based on SDSS-DR8 optical photometric data. For the 37 systems out of 123 that had both optical and X-ray data available, we investigated the gas, stellar, and total baryon mass fractions inside r2500 and r500 and the differential gas mass fraction within the spherical annulus between r2500 and r500, as a function of total mass. For the other objects, we investigated the gas mass fraction only.

- Using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, the COS Science Team has conducted a high signal-to-noise survey of 14 bright QSOs. In a previous paper (Savage et al., 2014ApJS..212....8S), these far-UV spectra were used to discover 14 "warm" (T >= 10^5^ K) absorbers using a combination of broad Ly{alpha} and broad O VI absorptions. A reanalysis of a few of this new class of absorbers using slightly relaxed fitting criteria finds as many as 20 warm absorbers could be present in this sample. A shallow, wide spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey has been conducted around these sight lines to investigate the warm absorber environment, which is found to be spiral-rich groups or cluster outskirts with radial velocity dispersions {sigma}=250-750 km/s. While 2{sigma} evidence is presented favoring the hypothesis that these absorptions are associated with the galaxy groups and not with the individual, nearest galaxies, this evidence has considerable systematic uncertainties and is based on a small sample size so it is not entirely conclusive. If the associations are with galaxy groups, the observed frequency of warm absorbers (idN/dz = 3.5-5 per unit redshift) requires them to be very extended as an ensemble on the sky (~1 Mpc in radius at high covering factor). Most likely these warm absorbers are interface gas clouds whose presence implies the existence of a hotter (T ~ 10^6.5^ K), diffuse, and probably very massive (>10^11^ M_{sun}_) intra-group medium which has yet to be detected directly.

- We quantify the luminosity contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the 12{mu}m, mid-infrared (MIR; 5-38{mu}m), and total IR (5-1000{mu}m) emission in the local AGNs detected in the all-sky 70 month Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) ultrahard X-ray survey. We decompose the IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 587 objects into the AGN and starburst components using templates for an AGN torus and a star-forming galaxy. This enables us to recover the emission from the AGN torus including the low-luminosity end, down to log(L_14-150_/erg/s)~41, which typically has significant host galaxy contamination. The sample demonstrates that the luminosity contribution of the AGN to the 12{mu}m, the MIR, and the total IR bands is an increasing function of the 14-150keV luminosity. We also find that for the most extreme cases, the IR pure-AGN emission from the torus can extend up to 90{mu}m. The total IR AGN luminosity obtained through the IR SED decomposition enables us to estimate the fraction of the sky obscured by dust, i.e., the dust covering factor. We demonstrate that the median dust covering factor is always smaller than the median X-ray obscuration fraction above an AGN bolometric luminosity of log(L_bol_^(AGN)^/erg/s)~42.5. Considering that the X-ray obscuration fraction is equivalent to the covering factor coming from both the dust and gas, this indicates that an additional neutral gas component, along with the dusty torus, is responsible for the absorption of X-ray emission.

- The recently released 105-month Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) all-sky hard X-ray survey catalog presents an opportunity to study astrophysical objects detected in the deepest look at the entire hard X-ray (14-195keV) sky. Here we report the results of a multifrequency study of 146 blazars from this catalog, quadrupling the number compared to past studies, by utilizing recent data from the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT), Swift-BAT, and archival measurements. In our {gamma}-ray analysis of ~10yr of the LAT data, 101 are found as {gamma}-ray emitters, whereas, 45 remains LAT undetected. We model the broadband spectral energy distributions with a synchrotron-inverse Compton radiative model. On average, BAT detected sources host massive black holes (M_bh_~10^9^M_{sun}_) and luminous accretion disks (L_d_~10^46^erg/s). At high redshifts (z>2), BAT blazars host more powerful jets with luminous accretion disks compared to those detected only with Fermi-LAT. We find good agreement in the black hole masses derived from the single-epoch optical spectroscopic measurements and standard accretion disk modeling approaches. Other physical properties of BAT blazars are similar to those known for Fermi-LAT detected objects.
