- Supernovae (SNe) exploding in a dense circumstellar medium (CSM) are hypothesized to accelerate cosmic rays in collisionless shocks and emit GeV {gamma}-rays and TeV neutrinos on a timescale of several months. We perform the first systematic search for {gamma}-ray emission in Fermi Large Area Telescope data in the energy range from 100MeV to 300GeV from the ensemble of 147 SNe Type IIn exploding in a dense CSM. We search for a {gamma}-ray excess at each SNe location in a one-year time window. In order to enhance a possible weak signal, we simultaneously study the closest and optically brightest sources of our sample in a joint-likelihood analysis in three different time windows (1 year, 6 months, and 3 months). For the most promising source of the sample, SN 2010jl (PTF 10aaxf), we repeat the analysis with an extended time window lasting 4.5 years. We do not find a significant excess in {gamma}-rays for any individual source nor for the combined sources and provide model-independent flux upper limits for both cases. In addition, we derive limits on the {gamma}-ray luminosity and the ratio of {gamma}-ray-to-optical luminosity ratio as a function of the index of the proton injection spectrum assuming a generic {gamma}-ray production model. Furthermore, we present detailed flux predictions based on multi-wavelength observations and the corresponding flux upper limit at a 95% confidence level (CL) for the source SN 2010jl (PTF 10aaxf).

- We present results from the first phase of the Seoul National University Bright Quasar Survey in Optical (SNUQSO) as well as its basic observational setup. Previous and current large-area surveys have been successful in identifying many quasars, but they could have missed bright quasars due to their survey design. In order to help complete the census of bright quasars, we have performed spectroscopic observations of new bright quasar candidates selected from various methods based on optical colors, near-infrared colors, radio, and X-ray data. In 2005/2006, we observed 55 bright quasar candidates using the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) on the 1.8m telescope at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. We identify 14 quasars/Seyferts from our observation, including an optically bright quasar with i=14.98mag at z=0.092 (SDSS J003236.59-091026.2). Non-quasar/Seyfert objects are found to be mostly stars, among which there are five M-type stars and one cataclysmic variable. Our result shows that there still exist bright quasars to be discovered. However, at the same time, we conclude that finding new bright quasars in high Galactic latitude regions is very challenging and that the existing compilation of optically bright quasars is nearly complete in the northern hemisphere.

- Here we describe the Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7) and present results on 64 galaxies drawn from the first data release. The S7 uses the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) mounted on the ANU 2.3m telescope located at the Siding Spring Observatory to deliver an integral field of 38x25 arcsec at a spectral resolution of R=7000 in the red (530-710nm), and R=3000 in the blue (340-560nm). From these data cubes we have extracted the narrow-line region spectra from a 4 arcsec aperture centered on the nucleus. We also determine the H{beta} and [OIII]{lambda}5007 fluxes in the narrow lines, the nuclear reddening, the reddening-corrected relative intensities of the observed emission lines, and the H{beta} and [OIII]{lambda}5007 luminosities determined from spectra for which the stellar continuum has been removed. We present a set of images of the galaxies in [OIII]{lambda}5007, [NII]{lambda}6584, and H{alpha}, which serve to delineate the spatial extent of the extended narrow-line region and also to reveal the structure and morphology of the surrounding HII regions. Finally, we provide a preliminary discussion of those Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies that display coronal emission lines in order to explore the origin of these lines.

- Several studies have reported the presence of sodium excess objects having neutral atomic absorption lines at 5895{AA} (Na.D) and 8190{AA} that are deeper than expected based on stellar population models that match the stellar continuum. The origin of these lines is therefore hotly debated. van Dokkum & Conroy (2010Natur.468..940V) proposed that low-mass stars (<~0.3M_{sun}_) are more prevalent in massive early-type galaxies, which may lead to a strong Na I 8190 line strength. It is necessary to test this prediction, however, against other prominent optical line indices such as Na.D, Mg b, and Fe 5270, which can be measured with a significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio than Na I 8190. We identified a new sample of roughly 1000 Na.D excess objects (NEOs; ~8% of galaxies in the sample) based on Na.D line strength in the redshift range 0.00<=z<=0.08 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 through detailed analysis of galaxy spectra. We explore the properties of these new objects here. The novelty of this work is that the galaxies were carefully identified through direct visual inspection of SDSS images, and we systematically compared the properties of NEOs and those of a control sample of galaxies with normal Na.D line strengths. We note that the majority of galaxies with high velocity dispersions ({sigma}_e_>250km/s) show Na.D excesses.

- We present a catalog of 105 rich and massive (M>3x10^14^M_{sun}_) optically selected clusters of galaxies extracted from 70deg^2^ of public archival griz imaging from the Blanco 4m telescope acquired over 45 nights between 2005 and 2007. We use the clusters' optically derived properties to estimate photometric redshifts, optical luminosities, richness, and masses. We complement the optical measurements with archival XMM-Newton and ROSAT X-ray data which provide additional luminosity and mass constraints on a modest fraction of the cluster sample. Two of our clusters show clear evidence for central lensing arcs; one of these has a spectacular large diameter, nearly complete Einstein Ring surrounding the brightest cluster galaxy.

- We report redshifts, magnitudes, and morphological classifications for 5369 galaxies with m_B_<=15.5 and for 57 galaxies fainter than this limit, in two regions covering a total of 1.70 sr in the southern celestial hemisphere. The galaxy catalog is drawn primarily from the list of nonstellar objects identified in the Hubble Space Telescope Guide Star Catalog (GSC). The galaxies have positions accurate to ~1" and magnitudes with an rms scatter of ~0.3mag. We compute magnitudes (m_SSRS2_) from the relation between instrumental GSC magnitudes and the photometry by Lauberts & Valentijn. From a comparison with CCD photometry, we find that our system is homogeneous across the sky and corresponds to magnitudes measured at the isophotal level ~26mag/arcsec^2^. The precision of the radial velocities is ~40km/s, and the redshift survey is more than 99% complete to the m_SSRS2_=15.5mag limit. This sample is in the direction opposite that of the CfA2; in combination the two surveys provide an important database for studies of the properties of galaxies and their large-scale distribution in the nearby universe.

- The data from photometric and spectroscopic observations of 1355 southern spiral galaxies are presented and used to determine their distances and peculiar velocities via the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation. I-band CCD surface photometry was carried out using the 1-m and 3.9-m telescopes at Siding Spring Observatory. H-alpha rotation curves for 965 galaxies and 551 H I profiles are presented. The physical parameters, photometric and velocity data, distances, and peculiar velocities of the galaxies are presented in tabular form. The mean distance, systemic velocity, and average peculiar velocity of 24 clusters in the sample are given. TF diagrams are presented for each cluster.

- Prompted by a recent claim by Barrows et al. that X-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are often found significantly offset from the centres of their host galaxies, we have looked for examples of compact radio sources that are offset from the optical centroids of nearby (z<0.2) galaxies. We have selected a sample of 345 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxy catalogue, which have nearby compact radio sources listed in the Cosmic-Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) catalogue. We find only three matches ~0.87 per cent of the sample) with offsets greater than 600 milliarcsec (mas), which is considerably fewer than we would have expected from the Barrows et al. X-ray survey. We fit our histogram of offsets with a Rayleigh distribution with {sigma}=60.5mas, but find that there is an excess of objects with separations greater than ~150mas. Assuming that this excess represents AGNs with real offsets, we place an upper limit of ~17 per cent on the fraction of offset AGNs in our radio-selected sample. We select 38 objects with offsets greater than 150mas, and find they have some diverse properties: Some are well known, such as Mrk 273 and Arp 220, some have dust lanes, which may have affected the optical astrometry, and a few are strong new candidates for offset AGNs.

- The relationship between galaxies and the state/chemical enrichment of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) expected to dominate the baryon budget at low-z provides sensitive constraints on structure formation and galaxy evolution models. We present a deep redshift survey in the field of 1ES1553+113, a blazar with a unique combination of ultraviolet (UV)+X-ray spectra for surveys of the circumgalactic/intergalactic medium (CGM/IGM). Nicastro+ (2018Natur.558..406N) reported the detection of two OVII WHIM absorbers at z=0.4339 and 0.3551 in its spectrum, suggesting that the WHIM is metal rich and sufficient to close the missing baryons problem. Our survey indicates that the blazar is a member of a z=0.433 group and that the higher-z OVII candidate arises from its intragroup medium. The resulting bias precludes its use in baryon censuses. The z=0.3551 candidate occurs in an isolated environment 630kpc from the nearest galaxy (with stellar mass logM_*_/M_{sun}_~9.7), which we show is unexpected for the WHIM. Finally, we characterize the galactic environments of broad HI Ly{alpha} absorbers (Doppler widths of b=40-80km/s; T<~4x10^5^K) that provide metallicity-independent WHIM probes. On average, broad Ly{alpha} absorbers are ~2x closer to the nearest luminous (L>0.25L*) galaxy (700kpc) than narrow (b<30km/s; T<~4x10^5^K) ones (1300kpc) but ~2x further than OVI absorbers (350kpc). These observations suggest that gravitational collapse heats portions of the IGM to form the WHIM, but with feedback that does not enrich the IGM far beyond galaxy/group halos to levels currently observable in UV/X-ray metal lines.

- On the basis of the Galactic O Star Spectroscopic Survey (GOSSS), we present a detailed systematic investigation of the O Vz stars. The currently used spectral classification criteria are rediscussed, and the Vz phenomenon is recalibrated through the addition of a quantitative criterion based on the equivalent widths of the HeI{lambda}4471, HeII{lambda}4542, and HeII{lambda}4686 spectral lines. The GOSSS O Vz and O V populations resulting from the newly adopted spectral classification criteria are comparatively analyzed. The locations of the O Vz stars are probed, showing a concentration of the most extreme cases toward the youngest star-forming regions. The occurrence of the Vz spectral peculiarity in a solar-metallicity environment, as predicted by the FASTWIND code, is also investigated, confirming the importance of taking into account several processes for the correct interpretation of the phenomenon.
