- We present an analysis of stellar populations and evolutionary history of galaxies in three similarly rich galaxy clusters MS0451.6-0305 (z=0.54), RXJ0152.7-1357 (z=0.83), and RXJ1226.9+3332 (z=0.89). Our analysis is based on high signal-to-noise ground-based optical spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope imaging for a total of 17-34 members in each cluster. Using the dynamical masses together with the effective radii and the velocity dispersions, we find no indication of evolution of sizes or velocity dispersions with redshift at a given galaxy mass. We establish the Fundamental Plane (FP) and scaling relations between absorption line indices and velocity dispersions. We confirm that the FP is steeper at z~0.86 compared to the low-redshift FP, indicating that under the assumption of passive evolution the formation redshift, z_form_, depends on the galaxy velocity dispersion (or alternatively mass). At a velocity dispersion of {sigma}=125km/s (Mass=10^10.55^M_{sun}_) we find z_form_=1.24+/-0.05, while at {sigma}=225km/s (Mass=10^11.36^M_{sun}_) the formation redshift is z_form_=1.95^+0.3^_-0.2_, for a Salpeter initial mass function. The three clusters follow similar scaling relations between absorption line indices and velocity dispersions as those found for low-redshift galaxies. The zero point offsets for the Balmer lines depend on cluster redshifts. However, the offsets indicate a slower evolution, and therefore higher formation redshift, than the zero point differences found from the FP, if interpreting the data using a passive evolution model. Specifically, the strength of the higher order Balmer lines H{delta} and H{gamma} implies z_form_>2.8. The scaling relations for the metal indices in general show small and in some cases insignificant zero point offsets, favoring high formation redshifts for a passive evolution model.

- We present new observations of the three nearest early-type galaxy (ETG) strong lenses discovered in the SINFONI Nearby Elliptical Lens Locator Survey (SNELLS). Based on their lensing masses, these ETGs were inferred to have a stellar initial mass function (IMF) consistent with that of the Milky Way, not the bottom-heavy IMF that has been reported as typical for high-{sigma} ETGs based on lensing, dynamical, and stellar population synthesis techniques. We use these unique systems to test the consistency of IMF estimates derived from different methods. We first estimate the stellar M*/L using lensing and stellar dynamics. We then fit high-quality optical spectra of the lenses using an updated version of the stellar population synthesis models developed by Conroy & van Dokkum. When examined individually, we find good agreement among these methods for one galaxy. The other two galaxies show 2-3{sigma} tension with lensing estimates, depending on the dark matter contribution, when considering IMFs that extend to 0.08M_{sun}_. Allowing a variable low-mass cutoff or a nonparametric form of the IMF reduces the tension among the IMF estimates to <2{sigma}. There is moderate evidence for a reduced number of low-mass stars in the SNELLS spectra, but no such evidence in a composite spectrum of matched-{sigma} ETGs drawn from the SDSS. Such variation in the form of the IMF at low stellar masses (m<~0.3M_{sun}_), if present, could reconcile lensing/dynamical and spectroscopic IMF estimates for the SNELLS lenses and account for their lighter M*/L relative to the mean matched-{sigma} ETG. We provide the spectra used in this study to facilitate future comparisons.

- We present a new compilation of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), a new data set of low-redshift nearby-Hubble-flow SNe, and new analysis procedures to work with these heterogeneous compilations. This "Union" compilation of 414 SNe Ia, which reduces to 307 SNe after selection cuts, includes the recent large samples of SNe Ia from the Supernova Legacy Survey and ESSENCE Survey, the older data sets, as well as the recently extended data set of distant supernovae observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). A single, consistent, and blind analysis procedure is used for all the various SN Ia subsamples, and a new procedure is implemented that consistently weights the heterogeneous data sets and rejects outliers. We present the latest results from this Union compilation and discuss the cosmological constraints from this new compilation and its combination with other cosmological measurements (CMB and BAO).

- We present improved point-source catalogs for the 2Ms Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N) and the 250ks Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (E-CDF-S) Surveys, implementing a number of recent improvements in Chandra source-cataloging methodology. For CDF-N/E-CDF-S, we provide a main catalog that contains 683/1003 X-ray sources detected with wavdetect at a false-positive probability threshold of 10^-5^ that also satisfy a binomial-probability source-selection criterion of P<=0.004/P<0.002. Such an approach maximizes the number of reliable sources detected: a total of 196/275 main-catalog sources are new compared to the Alexander+ (2003, J/AJ/126/539) CDF-N/Lehmer+ (2005, J/ApJS/161/21) E-CDF-S main catalogs. We also provide CDF-N/E-CDF-S supplementary catalogs that consist of 72/56 sources detected at the same wavdetect threshold and having P of 0.004-0.1/0.002-0.1 and Ks<=22.9/Ks<=22.3mag counterparts. For all ~1800 CDF-N and E-CDF-S sources, including the ~500 newly detected ones (these being generally fainter and more obscured), we determine X-ray source positions utilizing centroid and matched-filter techniques; we also provide multiwavelength identifications, apparent magnitudes of counterparts, spectroscopic and/or photometric redshifts, basic source classifications, and estimates of observed active galactic nucleus and galaxy source densities around respective field centers. Simulations show that both the CDF-N and E-CDF-S main catalogs are highly reliable and reasonably complete. Background and sensitivity analyses indicate that the on-axis mean flux limits reached represent a factor of ~1.5-2.0 improvement over the previous CDF-N and E-CDF-S limits. We make our data products publicly available.

- We collected observational data on 781 Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies from the literature to photometrically study their infrared properties measured by the 2MASS, WISE, IRAS, AKARI, and Herschel missions. It is found that in the 1-5 {mu}m range the radiations of WR galaxies are dominated by the free-free emissions from the stellar winds and the circumstellar dust from the late-type stars in the host galaxy. In the 5-22 {mu}m range, the radiation of WR galaxies is dominated by the free-free emissions and the synchrotron radiation from the central active galactic nucleus (AGN; but not always present). In the 22-140 {mu}m range, the radiations of WR galaxies are dominated by the free-free emissions and the star formation/starburst activities. In the 250-500 {mu}m range, the radiation of WR galaxies is dominated by the free-free emissions. In addition, the comparison with the non-WR galaxies is made. It is shown that some star formation WR galaxies have redder near-infrared colors than non-WR star-forming galaxies probably due to the gas emission in the near-infrared. In the 2-5 {mu}m region WR galaxies have redder colors due to the thermal emission from circumstellar dust of late-type stars and the enhanced gas emission. In the 5-22 {mu}m region, both WR galaxies and non-WR galaxies have similar behavior, indicative of having similar free-free emission as the dominant radiation. In the 25-140 {mu}m region, both types of galaxies also have similar behavior, indicative of having free-free emission from the stellar winds or the thermal radiation from the starburst/star formation as the dominant radiation.

- GEMS and GOODS fields were examined to z~1.4 for galaxy interactions and mergers. The basic morphologies are familiar: antennae with long tidal tails, tidal dwarfs, and merged cores; M51-type galaxies with disk spirals and tidal arm companions; early-type galaxies with diffuse plumes; equal-mass grazing collisions; and thick J-shaped tails beaded with star formation and double cores. One type is not common locally and is apparently a loose assemblage of smaller galaxies. Photometric measurements were made of the tails and clumps, and physical sizes were determined assuming photometric redshifts.

- We measure the effective opacity ({tau}_eff_) of the intergalactic medium from the composite spectra of 281 Lyman-break galaxies in the redshift range 2<~z<~3. Our spectra are taken from the COSMOS Ly{alpha} Mapping And Tomographic Observations survey derived from the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on the W.M. Keck I telescope. We generate composite spectra in two redshift intervals and fit them with spectral energy distribution (SED) models composed of simple stellar populations. Extrapolating these SED models into the Ly{alpha} forest, we measure the effective Ly{alpha} opacity ({tau}_eff_) in the 2.02<~z<~2.44 range. At z=2.22, we estimate {tau}_eff_=0.159{+/-}0.001 from a power-law fit to the data. These measurements are consistent with estimates from quasar analyses at z<2.5 indicating that the systematic errors associated with normalizing quasar continua are not substantial. We provide a Gaussian processes model of our results and previous {tau}_eff_ measurements that describes the steep redshift evolution in {tau}_eff_ from z=1.5-4.

- We report on a systematic investigation of the H{beta} and FeII emission lines in a sample of 568 quasars within z<0.8 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalog (DR5, Cat. VII/252). The conventional broad H{beta} emission line can be decomposed into two components: one with intermediate velocity width and another with very broad width. The velocity shift and equivalent width of the intermediate-width component do not correlate with those of the very broad component of H{beta}, but its velocity shift and width do resemble FeII. Moreover, the width of the very broad component is roughly 2.5 times that of the intermediate-width component. These characteristics strongly suggest the existence of an intermediate-line region, whose kinematics seem to be dominated by infall, located at the outer portion of the broad-line region.

- We present the results of optical identification of 248 interplanetary scintillating (IPS) radio sources from the Pushchino Survey (PS) in the area of 0.11sr with the center at RA=10h28m, DE=+41{deg}. All 260 counterparts of IPS radio sources from the 7C and FIRST catalogues, which had been found in Paper I (Cat. <J/A+A/403/555>), were considered. We used USNO-B1.0 catalogue (limiting magnitude m_R_~21) for the optical identification and searched the literature to find optical data for fainter objects. Photometric and spectroscopic observations were conducted on the 1m and 6m telescopes of SAO RAS. Optical magnitudes or deep limits for 22 objects and redshifts for 26 ones have been obtained. In total, we collected optical data for 116 (68 with redshift) counterparts of the PS radio sources. For the subsample of the PS quasars (41 objects) the redshift distribution was compared to those of several other samples of quasars (BRL, 3CRR, MQS, B3-VLA, 7CRS I-III and PKS 0.25Jy) which have complete or nearly complete redshift information.

- The range of currently proposed active galactic nucleus (AGN) far-infrared templates results in uncertainties in retrieving host galaxy information from infrared observations and also undermines constraints on the outer part of the AGN torus. We discuss how to test and reconcile these templates. Physically, the fraction of the intrinsic AGN IR-processed luminosity compared with that from the central engine should be consistent with the dust-covering factor. In addition, besides reproducing the composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of quasars, a correct AGN IR template combined with an accurate library of star-forming galaxy templates should be able to reproduce the IR properties of the host galaxies, such as the luminosity-dependent SED shapes and aromatic feature strengths. We develop tests based on these expected behaviors and find that the shape of the AGN intrinsic far-IR emission drops off rapidly starting at ~20{mu}m and can be matched by an Elvis+ (1994, J/ApJS/95/1)-like template with a minor modification. Despite the variations in the near- to mid-IR bands, AGNs in quasars and Seyfert galaxies have remarkably similar intrinsic far-IR SEDs at {lambda}~20-100{mu}m, suggesting a similar emission character of the outermost region of the circumnuclear torus. The variations of the intrinsic AGN IR SEDs among the type-1 quasar population can be explained by the changing relative strengths of four major dust components with similar characteristic temperatures, and there is evidence for compact AGN-heated dusty structures at sub-kiloparsec scales in the far-IR.
