- We present optical and near-infrared photometry for a sample of 96 dusty, far-infrared luminous galaxies. We have precise spectroscopic redshifts for all these galaxies, yielding a median redshift of <z>=2.2. The majority, 78, are submillimeter-detected galaxies lying at z=0.2-3.6, while the remaining 18 are optically faint {mu}Jy radio galaxies at z=0.9-3.4 that are proposed to be similarly luminous, dusty galaxies whose dust emission is too hot to be detected in the submillimeter waveband.

- We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the X-ray sources detected in the wide-area, moderately deep Chandra Large Area Synoptic X-ray Survey (CLASXS) of the Lockman Hole-Northwest field. We have B, V, R, I, and z' photometry for 521 (99%) of the 525 sources in the X-ray catalog and spectroscopic redshifts for 271 (52%), including 20 stars. We do not find evidence for redshift groupings of the X-ray sources, like those found in the Chandra Deep Field surveys, because of the larger solid angle covered by this survey. We separate the X-ray sources by optical spectral type and examine the colors, apparent and absolute magnitudes, and redshift distributions for the broad-line and nonbroad-line active galactic nuclei. Combining our wide-area survey with other Chandra and XMM-Newton hard X-ray surveys, we find a definite lack of luminous, high accretion rate sources at z<1, consistent with previous observations that showed that supermassive black hole growth is dominated at low redshifts by sources with low accretion rates.

- We use a dense, complete redshift survey, the Smithsonian Hectospec Lensing Survey (SHELS), covering a 4deg^2^ region of a deep imaging survey, the Deep Lens Survey (DLS), to study the optical spectral properties of Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) 22{mu}m selected galaxies. Among 507 WISE 22{mu}m selected sources with (S/N)_22{mu}m_>=3 ({approx}S_22{mu}m_>~2.5mJy), we identify the optical counterparts of 481 sources (~98%) at R<25.2 in the very deep, DLS R-band source catalog. Among them, 337 galaxies at R<21 have SHELS spectroscopic data. Most of these objects are at z<0.8. The infrared (IR) luminosities are in the range 4.5x10^8^(L_{sun}_)<~L_IR_<~5.4x10^12^(L_{sun}_). Most 22{mu}m selected galaxies are dusty star-forming galaxies with a small (<1.5) 4000{AA} break. The stacked spectra of the 22 {mu}m selected galaxies binned in IR luminosity show that the strength of the [O III] line relative to H{beta} grows with increasing IR luminosity. The optical spectra of the 22{mu}m selected galaxies also show that there are some (~2.8%) unusual galaxies with very strong [Ne III] {lambda}3869, 3968 emission lines that require hard ionizing radiation such as active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or extremely young massive stars. The specific star formation rates (sSFRs) derived from the 3.6 and 22{mu}m flux densities are enhanced if the 22{mu}m selected galaxies have close late-type neighbors. The sSFR distribution of the 22{mu}m selected galaxies containing AGNs is similar to the distribution for star-forming galaxies without AGNs. We identify 48 dust-obscured galaxy candidates with large (>~1000) mid-IR to optical flux density ratio. The combination of deep photometric and spectroscopic data with WISE data suggests that WISE can probe the universe to z~2.

- We investigate whether the correlation between the hard X-ray photon index ({Gamma}) and accretion rate for super-Eddington accreting quasars is different from that for sub-Eddington accreting quasars. We construct a sample of 113 bright quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14 quasar catalog, with 38 quasars as the super-Eddington subsample and 75 quasars as the sub-Eddington subsample. We derive black hole masses using a simple-epoch virial mass formula based on the H{beta} lines, and we use the standard thin disk model to derive the dimensionless accretion rates (M) for our sample. The X-ray data for these quasars are collected from the Chandra and XMM-Newton archives. We fit the hard X-ray spectra using a single power-law model to obtain {Gamma} values. We find a statistically significant (R_S_=0.43, p=7.75x10^-3^) correlation between {Gamma} and M for the super-Eddington subsample. The {Gamma}-M correlation for the sub-Eddington subsample is also significant, but weaker (R_S_=0.30, p=9.98x10^-3^). Linear regression analysis shows that {Gamma}=(0.34{+/-}0.11)log(M)+(1.71{+/-}0.17) and {Gamma}=(0.09{+/-}0.04)log(M)+(1.93{+/-}0.04) for the super- and sub-Eddington subsamples, respectively. The {Gamma}-M correlations of the two subsamples are different, suggesting different disk-corona connections in these two types of systems. We propose one qualitative explanation of the steeper {Gamma}-M correlation in the super-Eddington regime that involves larger seed photon fluxes received by the compact coronae from the thick disks in super-Eddington accreting quasars.

- We present results of a program of optical spectroscopy of radio galaxies in rich clusters. Redshifts are reported for 268 radio galaxies or close companions in Abell clusters and 36 objects which turned out to be foreground or background objects. Absolute line strengths are also reported for the 3727{AA} [OII] line and the [NII]/H{alpha} complex. We find no evidence that the radio activity in our sample of mostly FR I radio galaxies is associated with emission-line luminosities above those found in "normal" galaxies of the same absolute magnitude and optical type. We also find that the radial velocity differences between radio galaxies and the cluster mean seem mainly to be a function of galaxy absolute magnitude rather than radio properties.

- We present the results of a program to acquire high-quality optical spectra of X-ray sources detected in the Extended-Chandra Deep Field-South (E-CDF-S) and its central 2Ms area. New spectroscopic redshifts, up to z=4, are measured for 283 counterparts to Chandra sources with deep exposures (t~2-9hr per pointing) using multi-slit facilities on both VLT (VIMOS) and Keck (DEIMOS), thus bringing the total number of spectroscopically identified X-ray sources to over 500 in this survey field. Since our new spectroscopic identifications are mainly associated with X-ray sources in the shallower 250ks coverage, we provide a comprehensive catalog of X-ray sources detected in the E-CDF-S including the optical and near-infrared counterparts, determined by a likelihood routine, and redshifts (both spectroscopic and photometric), that incorporate published spectroscopic catalogs, thus resulting in a final sample with a high fraction (80%) of X-ray sources having secure identifications. Our redshift catalog includes 17 type-2 QSOs at 1<~z<~3.5. Based on our deepest (9 hr) VLT/VIMOS observation, we identify "elusive" optically faint galaxies (Rmag~25) at z~2-3 based upon the detection of interstellar absorption lines (e.g., OII+SiIV, CII], CIV).

- We report on optical spectroscopy of 165 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in the Fermi 1LAC sample, which have helped allow a nearly complete study of this population. Fermi FSRQs show significant evidence for non-thermal emission even in the optical; the degree depends on the {gamma}-ray hardness. They also have smaller virial estimates of hole mass than the optical quasar sample. This appears to be largely due to a preferred (axial) view of the {gamma}-ray FSRQ and non-isotropic (H/R ~ 0.4) distribution of broad-line velocities. Even after correction for this bias, the Fermi FSRQs show higher mean Eddington ratios than the optical population. A comparison of optical spectral properties with Owens Valley Radio Observatory radio flare activity shows no strong correlation.

- We present an optical spectroscopic survey of 24um and 1.4GHz sources, detected in the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey (FLS), using the multifiber spectrograph, Hydra, on the WIYN telescope. We have obtained spectra for 772 sources, with flux densities above 0.15mJy in the infrared and 0.09mJy in the radio. The redshifts measured in this survey are mostly in the range 0<z<0.4, with a distribution peaking at z~0.2.
