- We present the Voigt profile analysis of 132 intervening CIV+CIII components associated with optically thin HI absorbers at 2.1<z<3.4 in the 19 high-quality UVES/VLT and HIRES/Keck QSO spectra. For logN_CIV_ in [11.7, 14.1], N_CIII_{propto}N_CIV_^1.42+/-0.11^ and <N_CIII}/N_CIV>=1.0+/-0.3 with a negligible redshift evolution. For 54 CIV components tied (aligned) with HI at logN_HI_ in [12.2, 16.0] and logN_CIV_ in [11.8, 13.8], the gas temperature T_b_ estimated from absorption line widths is well approximated to a Gaussian peaking at logT_b_~4.4+/-0.3 for logT_b_ in [3.5, 5.5], with a negligible non-thermal contribution. For 32 of 54 tied HI+CIV pairs, also tied with CIII at logN_CIII_ in [11.7, 13.8], we ran both photoionization equilibrium (PIE) and non-PIE (using a fixed temperature T_b_) cloudy models for the Haardt-Madau QSOs+galaxies 2012 UV background. We find evidence of bimodality in observed and derived physical properties. High-metallicity branch absorbers have a carbon abundance [C/H]temp>=-1.0, a line-of-sight length L_temp_<=20kpc and a total (neutral and ionized) hydrogen volume density logn_H,temp_ in [-4.5, -3.3] and logT_b_ in [3.9, 4.5]. Low-metallicity branch absorbers have [C/H]temp<=-1.0, L_temp_ in [20, 480]kpc and logn_H,temp_ in [-5.2, -4.3] and logT_b_~ 4.5. High-metallicity branch absorbers seem to be originated from extended discs, inner haloes or outflowing gas of intervening galaxies, while low-metallicity absorbers are produced by galactic haloes or the surrounding intergalactic medium filament.

- We investigated the connection between the mid-infrared (MIR) and optical spectral characteristics in a sample of 82 Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs), observed with Infrared Spectrometer on Spitzer (IRS) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR12). We found several interesting correlations between optical and MIR spectral properties: (i) as starburst significators in MIR increase, the equivalent widths (EWs) of optical lines H{beta}NLR and FeII, increase as well; (ii) as MIR spectral index increases, EW([OIII]) decreases, while fractional contribution of AGN (RAGN) is not connected with EW([OIII]); (iii) The log([OIII]5007/H{beta}NLR) ratio is weakly related to the fractional contribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (RPAHs). We compare the two different MIR and optical diagnostics for starburst contribution to the overall radiation (RPAH and Baldwin, Philips & Terlevich diagram, respectively). The significant differences between optical and MIR starburst diagnostics were found. The starburst influence to observed correlations between optical and MIR parameters is discussed.

- OH megamasers (OHMs) are rare, luminous molecular masers that are typically observed in (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies and serve as markers of major galaxy mergers. In blind emission line surveys such as the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-Band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey for neutral hydrogen (HI), OHMs at z~0.2 can mimic z~0.05 HI lines. We present the results of optical spectroscopy of ambiguous HI detections in the ALFALFA 40 per cent data release detected by the Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) but with uncertain optical counterparts. The optical redshifts, obtained from observations at the Apache Point Observatory, revealed five new OHMs and identified 129 HI optical counterparts. 60 candidates remain ambiguous. The new OHMs are the first detected in a blind spectral line survey. The number of OHMs in ALFALFA is consistent with predictions from the OH luminosity function. Additionally, the mid-infrared magnitudes and colours of the OHM host galaxies found in a blind survey do not seem to differ from those found in previous targeted surveys. This validates the methods used in previous IR-selected OHM surveys and indicates there is no previously unknown OHM-producing population at z~0.2. We also provide a method for future surveys to separate OH megamasers from 99 per cent of HI line emitters without optical spectroscopy by using WISE infrared colours and magnitudes. Since the fraction of OHMs found in flux-limited HI surveys is expected to increase with the survey's redshift, this selection method can be applied to future flux-limited high-redshift hydrogen surveys.

- The analysis of blazars' parameters from BZCAT leads to a conclusion that they do not have the same properties. The preliminary criterion to include an object in the catalog was the strong radio emission; however, two type of radio sources were selected: BL Lacertae (BLL) objects and Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQ). As a number of properties are typical of blazars (strong radio emission, optical variability, continuum optical spectra, polarization, high luminosity, etc.), using the optical data, we investigate them to clarify which property plays the most significant role in their classification as blazars. We found that 60% of blazars have optical variability. We use a technique developed based on POSS1 and POSS2 photometry and group the variability into extreme, strong, medium, and low classes. In the optical range, 51 blazars have powerful variability (extreme variables), and 126 are high variables. In addition, 63% of blazars have detected radiation in X-ray and 28% have detected radiation in gamma rays. We give the average statistical characteristics of blazars based on our analysis and calculations.

- How can we discover objects we did not know existed within the large data sets that now abound in astronomy? We present an outlier detection algorithm that we developed, based on an unsupervised Random Forest. We test the algorithm on more than two million galaxy spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and examine the 400 galaxies with the highest outlier score. We find objects which have extreme emission line ratios and abnormally strong absorption lines, objects with unusual continua, including extremely reddened galaxies. We find galaxy-galaxy gravitational lenses, double-peaked emission line galaxies and close galaxy pairs. We find galaxies with high ionization lines, galaxies that host supernovae and galaxies with unusual gas kinematics. Only a fraction of the outliers we find were reported by previous studies that used specific and tailored algorithms to find a single class of unusual objects. Our algorithm is general and detects all of these classes, and many more, regardless of what makes them peculiar. It can be executed on imaging, time series and other spectroscopic data, operates well with thousands of features, is not sensitive to missing values and is easily parallelizable.

- We investigate extremely luminous dusty galaxies in the environments around Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)-selected hot dust-obscured galaxies (Hot DOGs) and WISE/radio-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at average redshifts of z=2.7 and 1.7, respectively. Previous observations have detected overdensities of companion submillimetre-selected sources around 10 Hot DOGs and 30 WISE/radio AGNs, with overdensities of ~2-3 and ~5-6, respectively. We find that the space densities in both samples to be overdense compared to normal star-forming galaxies and submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS). Both samples of companion sources have consistent mid-infrared (mid-IR) colours and mid-IR to submm ratios as SMGs. The brighter population around WISE/radio AGNs could be responsible for the higher overdensity reported. We also find that the star formation rate densities are higher than the field, but consistent with clusters of dusty galaxies. WISE-selected AGNs appear to be good signposts for protoclusters at high redshift on arcmin scales. The results reported here provide an upper limit to the strength of angular clustering using the two-point correlation function. Monte Carlo simulations show no angular correlation, which could indicate protoclusters on scales larger than the SCUBA-2 1.5-arcmin scale maps.
