- We present the latest results from a spectroscopic survey designed to uncover the hidden population of AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries in the photometric database of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We selected ~2000 candidates based on their photometric colours, a relatively small sample which is expected to contain the majority of all AM CVn binaries in the SDSS (expected to be ~50). We present two new candidate AM CVn binaries discovered using this strategy: SDSS J104325.08+563258.1 and SDSS J173047.59+554518.5. We also present spectra of 29 new cataclysmic variables, 23 DQ white dwarfs and 21 DZ white dwarfs discovered in this survey. The survey is now approximately 70 per cent complete, and the discovery of seven new AM CVn binaries indicates a lower space density than previously predicted. From the essentially complete g~19 sample, we derive an observed space density of (5+/-3)*10^-7^pc^-3^; this is lower than previous estimates by a factor of 3. The sample has been cross-matched with the GALEX All-Sky Imaging Survey database, and with Data Release 9 of the UKIRT (United Kingdom Infrared Telescope) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The addition of UV photometry allows new colour cuts to be applied, reducing the size of our sample to ~1100 objects. Optimising our followup should allow us to uncover the remaining AM CVn binaries present in the SDSS, providing the larger homogeneous sample required to more reliably estimate their space density.

- The most highly accreting quasars are of special interest in studies of the physics of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and host galaxy evolution. Quasars accreting at high rates (L/LEdd~1) hold promise for use as "standard candles": distance indicators detectable at very high redshift. However, their observational properties are still largely unknown. We seek to identify a significant number of extreme accretors. A large sample can clarify the main properties of quasars radiating near L/LEdd~1 (in this paper they are designated as extreme Population A quasars or simply as extreme accretors) in the H{beta} spectral range for redshift <~0.8. We use selection criteria derived from four-dimensional Eigenvector 1 (4DE1) studies to identify and analyze spectra for a sample of 334 candidate sources identified from the SDSS DR7 database. The source spectra were chosen to show a ratio R_FeII_ between the FeII emission blend at {lambda}4570 and H{beta}, R_FeII_ > 1. Composite spectra were analyzed for systematic trends as a function of FeII strength, line width, and [OIII] strength. We introduced tighter constraints on the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and R_FeII_ values that allowed us to isolate sources most likely to be extreme accretors. We provide a database of detailed measurements. Analysis of the data allows us to confirm that H{beta} shows a Lorentzian function with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of H{beta}<=4000km/s. We find no evidence for a discontinuity at 2000km/s in the 4DE1, which could mean that the sources below this FWHM value do not belong to a different AGN class. Systematic [OIII] blue shifts, as well as a blueshifted component in H{beta} are revealed. We interpret the blueshifts as related to the signature of outflowing gas from the quasar central engine. The FWHM of H{beta} is still affected by the blueshifted emission; however, the effect is non-negligible if the FWHM H{beta} is used as a "virial broadening estimator" (VBE). We emphasize a strong effect of the viewing angle on H{beta} broadening, deriving a correction for those sources that shows major disagreement between virial and concordance cosmology luminosity values. The relatively large scatter between concordance cosmology and virial luminosity estimates can be reduced (by an order of magnitude) if a correction for orientation effects is included in the FWHM H{beta} value; outflow and sample definition yield relatively minor effects.

- We present an atlas of 88 z~5.7 and 30 z~6.5 Ly{alpha} emitters obtained from a wide-field narrowband survey. We combined deep narrowband imaging in 120{AA} bandpass filters centered at 8150{AA} and 9140{AA} with deep BVRIz broadband imaging to select high-redshift galaxy candidates over an area of 4180arcmin^2^. The goal was to obtain a uniform selection of comparable depth over the seven targeted fields in the two filters. For the GOODS-North region of the Hubble Deep Field-North field, we also selected candidates using a 120{AA} filter centered at 9210{AA}. We made spectroscopic observations with Keck DEIMOS of nearly all the candidates to obtain the final sample of Ly{alpha} emitters. At the 3.3{AA} resolution of the DEIMOS observations the asymmetric profile for Ly{alpha} emission can be clearly seen in the spectra of nearly all the galaxies. We show that the spectral profiles are surprisingly similar for many of the galaxies and that the composite spectral profiles are nearly identical at z=5.7 and z=6.5.

- The HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) Catalogue forms the largest uniform catalogue of HI sources compiled to date, with 4315 sources identified purely by their HI content. The catalogue data comprise the southern region DE<+2{deg} of HIPASS, the first blind HI survey to cover the entire southern sky. RMS noise for this survey is 13mJy/beam and the velocity range is -1280 to 12700km/s. Data search, verification and parametrization methods are discussed along with a description of measured quantities. Full catalogue data is made available to the astronomical community including positions, velocities, velocity widths, integrated fluxes and peak flux densities. Also available are on-sky moment maps, position- velocity moment maps and spectra of catalogue sources. A number of local large-scale features are observed in the space distribution of sources including the Super-Galactic plane and the Local Void. Notably, large-scale structure is seen at low Galactic latitudes, a region normally obscured at optical wavelengths.

- Measurement of the Galactic neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) column density, NHI, and brightness temperatures, Tb, is of high scientific value for a broad range of astrophysical disciplines. In the past two decades, one of the most-used legacy HI datasets has been the Leiden/Argentine/Bonn Survey (LAB). We release the HI 4-pi survey (HI4PI), an all-sky database of Galactic HI, which supersedes the LAB survey. The HI4PI survey is based on data from the recently completed first coverage of the Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey (EBHIS) and from the third revision of the Galactic All-Sky Survey (GASS). EBHIS and GASS share similar angular resolution and match well in sensitivity. Combining both, they are ideally suited to be a successor to LAB. The new HI4PI survey outperforms the LAB in angular resolution (16.1', FWHM) and sensitivity (43mK RMS). Moreover, it has full spatial sampling and thus overcomes a major issue of LAB, which severely undersamples the sky. We publish all-sky column density maps of the neutral atomic hydrogen in the Milky Way, along with full spectroscopic data, in several map projections including HEALPix.

- We present optical spectra of 144 white dwarfs detected in the Montreal-Cambridge-Tololo colorimetric survey, including 120 DA, 12 DB, 4 DO, 1 DQ, and 7 DC stars. We also perform a model atmosphere analysis of all objects in our sample using the so-called spectroscopic technique, or the photometric technique in the case of DC white dwarfs. The main objective of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing effort of confirming spectroscopically all white dwarf candidates in the Gaia survey, in particular in the southern hemisphere. All our spectra are made available in the Montreal White Dwarf Database.

- We present a catalog of 166 spectroscopically identified hot subdwarf stars from LAMOST DR1, 44 of which show the characteristics of cool companions in their optical spectra. Atmospheric parameters of 122 subdwarf stars with non-composite spectra were measured by fitting the profiles of hydrogen (H) and helium (He) lines with synthetic spectra from non-LTE model atmospheres. A unique property of our sample is that it covers a large range in apparent magnitude and galactic latitude, therefore it contains a mix of stars from different populations and galactic environments.

- We use high-quality, medium-resolution Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (HST/COS) observations of 82 UV-bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at redshifts z_AGN_<0.85 to construct the largest survey of the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) to date: 5138 individual extragalactic absorption lines in HI and 25 different metal-ion species grouped into 2611 distinct redshift systems at z_abs_<0.75 covering total redshift pathlengths {Delta}z_HI_=21.7 and {Delta}z_OVI_=14.5. Our semi-automated line-finding and measurement technique renders the catalog as objectively defined as possible. The cumulative column density distribution of HI systems can be parametrized d N(>N)/dz=C_14_(N/10^14^/cm2)^-({beta}-1)^, with C_14_=25+/-1 and {beta}=1.65+/-0.02. This distribution is seen to evolve both in amplitude, C_14_{propto}(1+z)^2.3+/-0.1^, and slope {beta}(z)=1.75-0.31 z for z<=0.47. We observe metal lines in 418 systems, and find that the fraction of IGM absorbers detected in metals is strongly dependent on N_H1_. The distribution of OVI absorbers appears to evolve in the same sense as the Ly{alpha} forest. We calculate contributions to {Omega}_b_ from different components of the low-z IGM and determine the Ly{alpha} decrement as a function of redshift. IGM absorbers are analyzed via a two-point correlation function in velocity space. We find substantial clustering of HI absorbers on scales of {Delta}v=50-300km/s with no significant clustering at {Delta}v>~1000km/s. Splitting the sample into strong and weak absorbers, we see that most of the clustering occurs in strong, N_HI_>~10^13.5^/cm2, metal-bearing IGM systems.

- We report spectroscopic results from our 40-orbit Hubble Space Telescope slitless grism spectroscopy program observing the 20 densest Clusters Around Radio-Loud AGN (CARLA) candidate galaxy clusters at 1.4<z<2.8. These candidate rich structures, among the richest and most distant known, were identified on the basis of [3.6]-[4.5] color from a 408hr multi-cycle Spitzer program targeting 420 distant radio-loud AGN. We report the spectroscopic confirmation of 16 distant structures at 1.4<z<2.8 associated with the targeted powerful high-redshift radio-loud AGN. We also report the serendipitous discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of seven additional structures at 0.87<z<2.12 not associated with the targeted radio-loud AGN. We find that 10^10^-10^11^M_{sun}_ member galaxies of our confirmed CARLA structures form significantly fewer stars than their field counterparts at all redshifts within 1.4<=z<=2. We also observe higher star-forming activity in the structure cores up to z=2, finding similar trends as cluster surveys at slightly lower redshifts (1.0<z<1.5). By design, our efficient strategy of obtaining just two grism orbits per field only obtains spectroscopic confirmation of emission line galaxies. Deeper spectroscopy will be required to study the population of evolved, massive galaxies in these (forming) clusters. Lacking multi-band coverage of the fields, we adopt a very conservative approach of calling all confirmations "structures," although we note that a number of features are consistent with some of them being bona fide galaxy clusters. Together this survey represents a unique and large homogenous sample of spectroscopically confirmed structures at high redshifts, potentially more than doubling the census of confirmed, massive clusters at z>1.4.

- We present a set of 71 quasars observed in the near ultraviolet with the PR200L prism on the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the G280 grism on the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The quasars were selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data to search for intervening Lyman limit system (LLS) absorption. The sample was subjected to the constraints that the quasars have AB magnitude g'<18.5, quasar emission redshift 2.3<z_em_<2.6, and lack strong BAL or z~z_em_ absorption. The median emission redshift of the sample is {bar}z=2.403. The data were all processed using custom data reduction pipelines, and the one-dimensional spectra have sufficient signal-to-noise ratio and resolution to easily identify absorption from LLS over the redshift range 1.2<z<2.5. The WFC3 data presented here are the first non-calibration spectra from the G280 grism.
