- In this work we report the discovery of 150 new double stars of which 142 are wide common proper motion stellar systems. In addition to this, we report the study of 23 recently catalogued wide common proper motion binaries discovered by other observers. Spectral types, photometric distances, kinematics and ages were determined from data obtained consulting the literature. Several criteria were used to determine the nature of each double star. Orbital periods and the semimajor axes were calculated.

- We report the discovery of 271 previously undetected dwarf galaxies in the outer Fornax cluster regions at radii r_vir_/4<r<r_vir_/2 using data from the Next Generation Fornax Survey (NGFS) with deep coadded u', g', and i' images obtained with Blanco/DECam at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory. From the 271 dwarf candidates, we find 39 to be nucleated. Together with our previous study of the central Fornax region, the new dwarfs detected with NGFS data number 392, of which 56 are nucleated. The total Fornax dwarf galaxy population from NGFS and other catalogs rises, therefore, to a total of 643 with 181 being nucleated, yielding an overall nucleation fraction of 28%. The absolute i'-band magnitudes for the outer NGFS dwarfs are in the range -18.80<=M_i'_<=-8.78 with effective radii r_eff,i'_=0.18-2.22kpc and an average Sersic index <n>_i'_=0.81. Nonnucleated dwarfs are found to be fainter and smaller by {Delta}<M_i'_>=2.25mag and {Delta}<r_eff,i'_>=0.4kpc than the nucleated dwarfs. We demonstrate a significant clustering of dwarf galaxies on scales <~100kpc, and projected surface number density profile estimates, {Sigma}_N_(r), show a concentration of dwarfs in the Fornax core region within r<~350kpc. {Sigma}_N_(r) has a flat distribution up to ~350kpc, beyond which it declines for the nonnucleated dwarfs. The nucleated dwarfs have a steeper {Sigma}N(r) distribution, are more concentrated toward NGC 1399, and are decreasing rapidly outwards. This is the first time the transition from cluster to field environment has been established for the very faint dwarf galaxy population with robust sample statistics.

- Using deep, high-resolution optical imaging from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey, we study the properties of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in a sample of nearly 400 quiescent galaxies in the core of Virgo with stellar masses 10^5^<~M*/M_{sun}_<~10^12^. The nucleation fraction reaches a peak value f_n_~90% for M*~10^9^M_{sun}_ galaxies and declines for both higher and lower masses, but nuclei populate galaxies as small as M*~5x10^5^M_{sun}_. Comparison with literature data for nearby groups and clusters shows that at the low-mass end nucleation is more frequent in denser environments. The NSC mass function peaks at M_NSC_~7x10^5^M_{sun}_, a factor 3-4 times larger than the turnover mass for globular clusters (GCs). We find a nonlinear relation between the stellar masses of NSCs and those of their host galaxies, with a mean nucleus-to-galaxy mass ratio that drops to M_NSC_/M*~3.6x10^-3^ for M*~5x10^9^M_{sun}_ galaxies. Nuclei in both more and less massive galaxies are much more prominent: M_NSC_{propto}M_*_^0.46^ at the low-mass end, where nuclei are nearly 50% as massive as their hosts. We measure an intrinsic scatter in NSC masses at a fixed galaxy stellar mass of 0.4dex, which we interpret as evidence that the process of NSC growth is significantly stochastic. At low galaxy masses we find a close connection between NSCs and GC systems, including very similar occupation distributions and comparable total masses. We discuss these results in the context of current dissipative and dissipationless models of NSC formation.

- We present a study of ultracompact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo cluster based mainly on imaging from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). Using ~100deg^2^ of u*giz imaging, we have identified more than 600 candidate UCDs, from the core of Virgo out to its virial radius. Candidates have been selected through a combination of magnitudes, ellipticities, colors, surface brightnesses, half-light radii, and, when available, radial velocities. Candidates were also visually validated from deep NGVS images. Subsamples of varying completeness and purity have been defined to explore the properties of UCDs and compare to those of globular clusters and the nuclei of dwarf galaxies with the aim of delineating the nature and origins of UCDs. From a surface density map, we find the UCDs to be mostly concentrated within Virgo's main subclusters, around its brightest galaxies. We identify several subsamples of UCDs-i.e., the brightest, largest, and those with the most pronounced and/or asymmetric envelopes-that could hold clues to the origin of UCDs and possible evolutionary links with dwarf nuclei. We find some evidence for such a connection from the existence of diffuse envelopes around some UCDs and comparisons of radial distributions of UCDs and nucleated galaxies within the cluster.

- We examine how the cosmic environment affects the chemical evolution of galaxies in the universe by comparing the N/O ratio of dwarf galaxies in voids with that of dwarf galaxies in denser regions. Ratios of the forbidden [OIII] and [SII] transitions provide estimates of a region's electron temperature and number density. We estimate the abundances of oxygen and nitrogen using these temperature and density estimates and the emission-line fluxes [OII]3727, [OIII]4959,5007, and [NII]6548,6584 with the direct T_e_ method. Using spectroscopic observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we are able to estimate the N/O ratio in 42 void dwarf galaxies and 89 dwarf galaxies in denser regions. The N/O ratio for void dwarfs (M_r_>-17) is slightly lower (~12%) than for dwarf galaxies in denser regions. We also estimate the nitrogen and oxygen abundances of 2050 void galaxies and 3883 galaxies in denser regions with M_r_>-20. These somewhat brighter galaxies (but still fainter than L_*_) also display similar minor shifts in the N/O ratio. The shifts in the average and median element abundance values in all absolute magnitude bins studied are in the same direction, suggesting that the large-scale environment may influence the chemical evolution of galaxies. We discuss possible causes of such a large-scale environmental dependence of the chemical evolution of galaxies, including retarded star formation and a higher ratio of dark matter halo mass to stellar mass in void galaxies.

- Obscured or narrow-line active galaxies offer an unobstructed view of the quasar environment in the presence of a luminous and vigorously accreting black hole (BH). We exploit the large new sample of optically selected luminous narrow-line active galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at redshifts 0.1<z<0.45, in conjunction with follow-up observations with the Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph (LDSS3) at Magellan, to study the distributions of BH mass and host galaxy properties in these extreme objects.

- On 2019 August 14 the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Virgo gravitational wave interferometer announced the detection of a binary merger, S190814bv, with a low false alarm rate of about 1 in 1.6x10^25^yr, a distance of 267+/-52Mpc, a 90% (50%) localization region of about 23 (5) deg^2^, and a probability of being a neutron star-black hole (NS-BH) merger of >99%. The LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) defines NS-BH such that the lighter binary member has a mass of <3M_{sun}_ and the more massive one has >5M_{sun}_, and this classification is in principle consistent with a BH-BH merger depending on the actual upper mass cutoff for neutron stars. Additionally, the LVC designated a probability that the merger led to matter outside the final BH remnant of <1%, suggesting that an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart is unlikely. Here we report our optical follow-up observations of S190814bv using the Magellan Baade 6.5m telescope to target all 96 galaxies in the Galaxy List for the Advanced Detector Era catalog within the 50% localization volume (representing about 70% of the integrated luminosity within this region). No counterpart was identified to a median 3{sigma} limiting magnitude of i=22.2 (M_i_~-14.9mag), comparable to the brightness of the optical counterpart of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 at the distance of S190814bv; similarly, we can rule out an on-axis jet typical of short GRBs. However, we cannot rule out other realistic models, such as a kilonova with only ~0.01M_{sun}_ of lanthanide-rich material, or an off-axis jet with a viewing angle of {theta}_obs_>~15{deg}.

Fortunately, some large area surveys have become increasingly prevalent across all wavelengths over the past decade, such as SDSS, NVSS, FIRST, RASS, etc. These surveys make it possible to select candidates in multiple wavelengths and the resulting sample is more complete.

- We present medium-resolution spectra (R~2000-4000) at 0.4-1.0{mu}m and 0.7-2.5{mu}m of 16 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected with red color in the near-infrared (NIR) of J-K>2.0mag at z~0.3. We fit the H{beta}, H{alpha}, P{beta}, and P{alpha} lines from these spectra to obtain their luminosities and line widths. We derive the E(B-V) color excess values of the NIR-red AGNs using two methods, one based on the line-luminosity ratios and another based on the continuum slopes. The two E(B-V) values agree with each other at rms dispersion ~0.249. About half of the NIR-red AGNs have g'-K<5 magnitude, and we find that these NIR-red, but blue in optical-NIR AGNs, have E(B-V)~0, suggesting that a significant fraction of the NIR color-selected red AGNs are unobscured or only mildly obscured. After correcting for the dust extinction, we estimate the black hole (BH) masses and the bolometric luminosities of the NIR-red AGNs using the Paschen lines to calculate their Eddington ratios ({lambda}Edd). The median Eddington ratios of nine NIR-red AGNs (log({lambda}_Edd_~-0.654+/-0.176) are only mildly higher than those of unobscured type 1 AGNs (log({lambda}_Edd_~-0.961+/-0.008). Moreover, we find that the MBH-{sigma}* relation for three NIR-red AGNs is consistent with that of unobscured type 1 AGNs at similar redshift. These results suggest that the NIR-red color selection alone is not effective at picking up dusty, intermediate-stage AGNs.

- We present variability measurements and partial light curves of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) from a two-night pilot study using Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope (Maunakea, Hawaii, USA). Subaru's large aperture (8m) and HSC's large field of view (1.77deg^2^) allow us to obtain measurements of multiple objects with a range of magnitudes in each telescope pointing. We observed 65 objects with m_r_=22.6-25.5mag in just six pointings, allowing 20-24 visits of each pointing over the two nights. Our sample, all discovered in the recent Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS), spans absolute magnitudes of H_r_=6.2-10.8mag and thus investigates smaller objects than previous light curve projects have typically studied. Our data supports the existence of a correlation between the light curve amplitude and absolute magnitude seen in other works but does not support a correlation between the amplitude and orbital inclination. Our sample includes a number of objects from different dynamical populations within the trans-Neptunian region, but we do not find any relationship between variability and the dynamical class. We were only able to estimate periods for 12 objects in the sample and found that a longer baseline of observations is required for a reliable period analysis. We find that 31 objects (just under half of our sample) have variability of {Delta}_mag_ greater than 0.4mag during all of the observations; in smaller 1.25hr, 1.85hr, and 2.45hr windows, the median {Delta}_mag_ is 0.13, 0.16, and 0.19mag, respectively. The fact that variability on this scale is common for small TNOs has important implications for discovery surveys (such as OSSOS or the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope) and color measurements.
