- Catalogue of close binaries
- Short Name:

- Description:
- A catalogue of close eclipsing binary systems (detached and semidetached) with at least one of the components located in the delta Scuti region of the Cepheid instability strip is presented. The positions of the stars in the instability strip are determined by their accurate temperatures and luminosities. Observationally detected binaries (20 semidetached, four detached and one unclassified) with oscillating components were included in the catalogue as a separate table. The primaries of the oscillating Algols tend to be located near the blue edge of the instability strip. Using reliable luminosities and temperatures determined by recent photometric and spectroscopic studies, we have found that at least one or two components of 71 detached and 90 semidetached systems are located in the delta Scuti region of the Cepheid instability strip. In addition, 36 detached or semidetached systems discovered by the Hipparcos satellite were also given as a separate list. One of their components is seen in the delta Scuti region, according to their spectral type or BV colours. They are potential candidate binaries with the delta Scuti-type pulsating components which need further photometric and spectroscopic studies in better precision. This catalogue covers information and literature references for 25 known and 197 candidate binaries with pulsating components.

- Detached eclipsing binaries with Gaia parallaxes

- Description:
- Using a sample of 81 Galactic, detached eclipsing binary stars we investigated the global zero-point shift of their parallaxes with the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) parallaxes. The stars in the sample lay in a distance range of 0.04-2kpc from the Sun. The photometric parallaxes {omega}_Phot_ of the eclipsing binaries were determined by applying a number of empirical surface brightness-color (SBC) relations calibrated on optical-infrared colors. For each SBC relation we calculated the individual differences d{varpi}_i_=({varpi}_Gaia_-{varpi}_Phot_)_i_ and then we calculated unweighted and weighted means. As the sample covers the whole sky we interpret the weighted means as the global shifts of the Gaia DR2 parallaxes with respect to our eclipsing binary sample. Depending on the choice of the SBC relation the shifts vary from -0.094 to -0.025mas. The weighted mean of the zero-point shift from all colors and calibrations used is d{omega}=-0.054+/-0.024mas. However, the SBC relations based on (B-K) and (V-K) colors, which are the least reddening dependent and have the lowest intrinsic dispersions, give a zero-point shift of d{omega}=-0.031+/-0.011mas in full agreement with results obtained by Lindegren+ (2018A&A...616A...2L) and Arenou+ (2018A&A...616A..17A). Our result confirms the global shift of Gaia DR2 parallaxes of d{omega}=-0.029mas reported by the Gaia team, but we do not confirm the larger zero-point shift reported by a number of follow-up papers.

- Early-type EBs with intermediate orbital periods
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We analyze 221 eclipsing binaries (EBs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud with B-type main-sequence (MS) primaries (M_1_~4-14 M_{sun}_) and orbital periods P=20-50 days that were photometrically monitored by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. We utilize our three-stage automated pipeline to (1) classify all 221 EBs, (2) fit physical models to the light curves of 130 detached well-defined EBs from which unique parameters can be determined, and (3) recover the intrinsic binary statistics by correcting for selection effects. We uncover two statistically significant trends with age. First, younger EBs tend to reside in dustier environments with larger photometric extinctions, an empirical relation that can be implemented when modeling stellar populations. Second, younger EBs generally have large eccentricities. This demonstrates that massive binaries at moderate orbital periods are born with a Maxwellian "thermal" orbital velocity distribution, which indicates they formed via dynamical interactions. In addition, the age-eccentricity anticorrelation provides a direct constraint for tidal evolution in highly eccentric binaries containing hot MS stars with radiative envelopes. The intrinsic fraction of B-type MS stars with stellar companions q=M_2_/M_1_>0.2 and orbital periods P=20-50 days is (7+/-2)%. We find early-type binaries at P=20-50 days are weighted significantly toward small mass ratios q~0.2-0.3, which is different than the results from previous observations of closer binaries with P<20 days. This indicates that early-type binaries at slightly wider orbital separations have experienced substantially less competitive accretion and coevolution during their formation in the circumbinary disk.

- M31A eclipsing binaries and Cepheids

- Description:
- We have undertaken a long-term project, DIRECT, to obtain the direct distances to two important galaxies in the cosmological distance ladder, M31 and M33, using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids. While rare and difficult to detect, DEBs provide us with the potential to determine these distances with an accuracy better than 5%. The extensive photometry obtained in order to detect DEBs provides us with good light curves for the Cepheid variables. These are essential to the parallel project to derive direct Baade-Wesselink distances to Cepheids in M31 and M33. For both Cepheids and eclipsing binaries, the distance estimates will be free of any intermediate steps. As a first step in the DIRECT project, between 1996 September and 1997 January we obtained 36 full nights on the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory 1.3m telescope and 45 full/partial nights on the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.2m telescope to search for DEBs and new Cepheids in the M31 and M33 galaxies. In this paper, second in a series, we present the catalog of variable stars, most of them newly detected, found in the field M31A [({alpha},{delta})=(11.34{deg}, 41.73{deg}), J2000.0]. We have found 75 variable stars: 15 eclipsing binaries, 43 Cepheids, and 17 other periodic, possible long-period or nonperiodic variables. The catalog of variables, as well as their photometry and finding charts, is available via anonymous ftp and the World Wide Web. The CCD frames are available upon request.

- M31Y eclipsing binaries and Cepheids

- Description:
- The DIRECT Project aims to obtain direct distances to two Local Group galaxies, M31 and M33, which occupy a crucial position near the base of the cosmological distance ladder. The first step is to search for detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids using 1m class telescopes to select good candidates, which will be followed up spectroscopically on 6.510m class telescopes. In this ninth paper, we present a catalog of variable stars discovered with image subtraction in field M31Y (RA=10.97{deg}, DE=41.69{deg}; J2000.0). The data were obtained with the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory 1.2m telescope on 25 nights, over a period of 6 months. In our search covering 22x22, we discovered 41 eclipsing binaries, 126 Cepheids, and 97 other periodic or nonperiodic variables, including a luminous blue variable candidate, a nova, and a Galactic cataclysmic variable. The catalog of variables, as well as their photometry and finding charts, is available electronically via anonymous ftp and the World Wide Web, at http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/~kstanek/DIRECT . The complete set of the CCD frames is available upon request.

- Description:
- Detached eclipsing binary star systems are our primary source of measured physical properties of normal stars. I introduce DEBCat: a catalog of detached eclipsing binaries with mass and radius measurements to the 2% precision necessary to put useful constraints on theoretical models of stellar evolution. The catalog was begun in 2006, as an update of the compilation by Andersen (1991A&ARv...3...91A). It now contains over 195 systems (2017/10/10), and new results are added on appearance in the refereed literature.

- Times of minima for 21 early-type SMC eccentric EBs
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/157/87
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the apsidal motion and light-curve analyses of 21 eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Most of these systems have never been studied before, hence their orbital and physical properties as well as the apsidal motion parameters are given here for the first time. All the systems are of early spectral type, having orbital periods up to 4 days. The apsidal motion periods were derived to be from 7.2 to 200 yr (OGLE-SMC-ECL-2194 having the shortest apsidal period among known main-sequence systems). The orbital eccentricities are usually rather mild (median of about 0.06), the maximum eccentricity being 0.33. For the period analysis using O-C diagrams of eclipse timings, in total 951 minima were derived from survey photometry as well as our new data. Moreover, six systems show some additional variation in their O-C diagrams, which should indicate the presence of hidden additional components in them. According to our analysis these third-body variations have periods from 6.9 to 22 yr.
