- Description:
- We present an X-ray spectral analysis of 126 galaxies of the 12um galaxy sample (Rush et al. 1993, Cat. VII/157). By studying this sample at X-ray wavelengths, we aim to determine the intrinsic power, continuum shape and obscuration level in these sources. We improve upon previous works by the use of superior data in the form of higher signal-to-noise ratio spectra, finer spectral resolution and a broader bandpass from XMM-Newton. We pay particular attention to Compton thick active galactic nucleus (AGN) with the help of new spectral fitting models that we have produced, which are based on Monte Carlo simulations of X-ray radiative transfer, using both a spherical and torus geometry, and taking into account Compton scattering and iron fluorescence.

- X-ray/NIR correlation for early-type galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/367/627
- Date:

- Description:
- The relation between X-ray luminosity and near-infrared (NIR) luminosity for early-type galaxies has been examined. NIR luminosities should provide a superior measure of stellar mass compared to optical luminosities used in previous studies, especially if there is significant star formation or dust present in the galaxies. However, we show that the X-ray-NIR relations are remarkably consistent with the X-ray-optical relations. This indicates that the large scatter of the relations is dominated by scatter in the X-ray properties of early-type galaxies, and is consistent with early-types consisting of old, quiescent stellar populations. We have investigated scatter in terms of environment, surface brightness profile, Mg2, H{beta}, H{gamma} line strength indices, spectroscopic age and nuclear H{alpha} emission.

- X-ray properties of BzK-selected galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/428/3089
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We investigate the X-ray properties of BzK-selected galaxies at z~2 using deep X-ray data in the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDFS) and Chandra Deep Field-North (CDFN). A subset of these BzK galaxies have been proposed as Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates based on a high ratio of infrared (IR) to ultraviolet (UV) star formation rates (SFRs). With the benefit of deep 24{mu}m observations, our sample of these IR-excess galaxies is larger than previous studies and combined with the deepest X-ray data yield new insights into the population. We identify 701 and 534 star-forming BzK galaxies (sBzK galaxies) in the range z=1.2-3.0 in CDFS and CDFN, respectively. Of these we directly detect in X-rays 49 sBzK galaxies in CDFS and 32 sBzK galaxies in CDFN.

- X-ray properties of Chandra red galaxies

- Description:
- We present the X-ray properties of the extremely red objects (ERO) population observed by Chandra with three partially overlapping pointings (up to ~90ks) over an area of ~500arcmin^2^, down to a 0.5-8keV flux limit of ~10-15erg/cm^2^/s. We selected EROs using a multi-band photometric catalog down to a Ks-band magnitude of ~19.3 (Vega system); 14 EROs were detected in X-rays, corresponding to ~9% of the overall X-ray source population (149 X-ray sources) and to ~5% of the ERO population (288). The X-ray emission of all X-ray detected EROs is consistent with that of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) (>~3.5x10^42^erg/s at photometric redshifts z>1), in agreement with previous X-ray observations, with an indication of increasing absorption between the three X-ray brightest EROs and the 11 X-ray faintest EROs.

- Young clumps embedded in IRDC
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/451/3089
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a catalogue of starless and protostellar clumps associated with infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) in a 40 degrees wide region of the inner Galactic plane (|b|<=1). We have extracted the far-infrared (FIR) counterparts of 3493 IRDCs with known distance in the Galactic longitude range 15<=l<=55 and searched for the young clumps using Herschel infrared Galactic plane survey, the survey of the Galactic plane carried out with the Herschel satellite. Each clump is identified as a compact source detected at 160, 250 and 350um. The clumps have been classified as protostellar or starless, based on their emission (or lack of emission) at 70um. We identify 1723 clumps, 1056 (61%) of which are protostellar and 667 (39%) starless. These clumps are found within 764 different IRDCs, 375 (49%) of which are only associated with protostellar clumps, 178 (23%) only with starless clumps, and 211 (28%) with both categories of clumps. The clumps have a median mass of ~250M_{sun}_ and range up to >10^4^M_{sun}_ in mass and up to 10^5^L_{sun}_ in luminosity. The mass-radius distribution shows that almost 30% of the starless clumps identified in this survey could form high-mass stars; however these massive clumps are confined in only 4% of the IRDCs. Assuming a minimum mass surface density threshold for the formation of high-mass stars, the comparison of the numbers of massive starless clumps and those already containing embedded sources suggests an upper limit lifetime for the starless phase of ~10^5^yr for clumps with a mass M>500M_{sun}_.

- z=4.5 and z=5.7 LAEs properties with Spitzer
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/813/78
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the results from a stellar population modeling analysis of a sample of 162 z=4.5 and 14 z=5.7 Ly{alpha} emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the Bootes field, using deep Spitzer/IRAC data at 3.6 and 4.5 {mu}m from the Spitzer Ly{alpha} Survey, along with Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS and WFC3 imaging at 1.1 and 1.6 {mu}m for a subset of the LAEs. This represents one of the largest samples of high-redshift LAEs imaged with Spitzer IRAC. We find that 30/162 (19%) of the z=4.5 LAEs and 9/14 (64%) of the z=5.7 LAEs are detected at >=3{sigma} in at least one IRAC band. Individual z=4.5 IRAC-detected LAEs have a large range of stellar mass, from 5x10^8^-10^11^ M_{sun}_. One-third of the IRAC-detected LAEs have older stellar population ages of 100 Myr^-1^ Gyr, while the remainder have ages <100 Myr. A stacking analysis of IRAC-undetected LAEs shows this population to be primarily low mass (8-20x10^8^ M_{sun}_) and young (64-570 Myr). We find a correlation between stellar mass and the dust-corrected ultraviolet-based star formation rate (SFR) similar to that at lower redshifts, in that higher mass galaxies exhibit higher SFRs. However, the z=4.5 LAE correlation is elevated 4-5 times in SFR compared to continuum-selected galaxies at similar redshifts. The exception is the most massive LAEs which have SFRs similar to galaxies at lower redshifts suggesting that they may represent a different population of galaxies than the traditional lower-mass LAEs, perhaps with a different mechanism promoting Ly{alpha} photon escape.

- ZFIRE v1.0 data release
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/828/21
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present an overview and the first data release of ZFIRE, a spectroscopic redshift survey of star-forming galaxies that utilizes the MOSFIRE instrument on Keck-I to study galaxy properties in rich environments at 1.5<z<2.5. ZFIRE measures accurate spectroscopic redshifts and basic galaxy properties derived from multiple emission lines. The galaxies are selected from a stellar mass limited sample based on deep near infrared imaging (K_AB_<25) and precise photometric redshifts from the ZFOURGE and UKIDSS surveys as well as grism redshifts from 3DHST. Between 2013 and 2015, ZFIRE has observed the COSMOS and UDS legacy fields over 13 nights and has obtained 211 galaxy redshifts over 1.57<z<2.66 from a combination of nebular emission lines (such as H{alpha}, [NII], H{beta}, [OII], [OIII], and [SII]) observed at 1-2{mu}m. Based on our medium-band near infrared photometry, we are able to spectrophotometrically flux calibrate our spectra to ~10% accuracy. ZFIRE reaches 5{sigma} emission line flux limits of ~3x10^-18^erg/s/cm^2^ with a resolving power of R=3500 and reaches masses down to ~10^9^M_{sun}_. We confirm that the primary input survey, ZFOURGE, has produced photometric redshifts for star-forming galaxies (including highly attenuated ones) accurate to {Delta}z/(1+z_spec_)=0.015 with 0.7% outliers. We measure a slight redshift bias of <0.001, and we note that the redshift bias tends to be larger at higher masses. We also examine the role of redshift on the derivation of rest-frame colors and stellar population parameters from SED fitting techniques. The ZFIRE survey extends spectroscopically confirmed z~2 samples across a richer range of environments, here we make available the first public release of the data for use by the community.

- z~4-10 galaxies from HST legacy fields
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/803/34

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The remarkable Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data sets from the CANDELS, HUDF09, HUDF12, ERS, and BoRG/HIPPIES programs have allowed us to map the evolution of the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) from z~10 to z~4. We develop new color criteria that more optimally utilize the full wavelength coverage from the optical, near-IR, and mid-IR observations over our search fields, while simultaneously minimizing the incompleteness and eliminating redshift gaps. We have identified 5859, 3001, 857, 481, 217, and 6 galaxy candidates at z~4, z~5, z~6, z~7, z~8, and z~10, respectively, from the ~1000arcmin^2^ area covered by these data sets. This sample of >10000 galaxy candidates at z>=4 is by far the largest assembled to date with HST. The selection of z~4-8 candidates over the five CANDELS fields allows us to assess the cosmic variance; the largest variations are at z>=7. Our new LF determinations at z~4 and z~5 span a 6 mag baseline and reach to -16 AB mag. These determinations agree well with previous estimates, but the larger samples and volumes probed here result in a more reliable sampling of >L_{star}_ galaxies and allow us to reassess the form of the UV LFs. Our new LF results strengthen our earlier findings to 3.4{sigma} significance for a steeper faint-end slope of the UV LF at z>4, with {alpha} evolving from {alpha}=-1.64+/-0.04 at z~4 to {alpha}=-2.06+/-0.13 at z~7 (and {alpha}=-2.02+/-0.23 at z~8), consistent with that expected from the evolution of the halo mass function. We find less evolution in the characteristic magnitude M^*^ from z~7 to z~4 the observed evolution in the LF is now largely represented by changes in {phi}_{star}_. No evidence for a non-Schechter-like form to the z~4-8 LFs is found. A simple conditional LF model based on halo growth and evolution in the M/L ratio ({alpha}(1+z}^-1.5^) of halos provides a good representation of the observed evolution.

- Description:
- We present the 9 and 18um luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies at 0.006<=z<=0.8 (with an average redshift of ~0.04) using the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey catalog. We selected 243 galaxies at 9um and 255 galaxies at 18um from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy region. These galaxies were then classified by their optical emission lines, such as the line width of H{alpha} or by their emission line ratios of [OIII]/H{beta} and [NII]/H{alpha} into five types: Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) (Type 1); Type 2 AGN (Type 2); low-ionization narrow emission line galaxies (LINER); galaxies with both star formation and narrow-line AGN activity (composite galaxies); and star-forming galaxies (SF). We found that (i) the number density ratio of Type 2 to Type 1 AGNs is 1.73+/-0.36, which is larger than a result obtained from the optical LF and (ii) this ratio decreases with increasing 18um luminosity.

- z~4-7 Lyman break galaxies in Hubble deep fields
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/821/123
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present clustering analysis results from 10381 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z~4-7, identified in the Hubble legacy deep imaging and new complimentary large-area Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam data. We measure the angular correlation functions of these LBGs at z~4, 5, 6, and 7 and fit these measurements using halo occupation distribution (HOD) models that provide an estimate of halo masses, M_h_~(1-20)x10^11^M_{sun}_. Our Mh estimates agree with those obtained by previous clustering studies in a UV-magnitude versus Mh plane and allow us to calculate stellar-to-halo mass ratios (SHMRs) of LBGs. By comparison with the z~0 SHMR, we identify evolution of the SHMR from z~0 to z~4 and from z~4 to z~7 at the >98% confidence levels. The SHMR decreases by a factor of ~2 from z~0 to 4 and increases by a factor of ~4 from z~4 to 7 at the dark matter halo mass of M_h_~10^11^M_{sun}. We compare our SHMRs with results of a hydrodynamic simulation and a semianalytic model and find that these theoretical studies do not predict the SHMR increase from z~4 to 7. We obtain the baryon conversion efficiency (BCE) of LBGs at z~4 and find that the BCE increases with increasing dark matter halo mass. Finally, we compare our clustering+HOD estimates with results from abundance matching techniques and conclude that the Mh estimates of the clustering+HOD analyses agree with those of the simple abundance matching within a factor of 3, and that the agreement improves when using more sophisticated abundance matching techniques that include subhalos, incompleteness, and/or evolution in the star formation and stellar mass functions.
