- The work studies of the environment of low-mass galaxies with active star formation (SF) and a possible trigger of SF bursts due to gravitational interaction. Following the study by Taylor et al. (1995ApJS...99..427T), we extend the search for possible disturbing galaxies of various masses to a much larger sample of 86 BCGs from the sky region of the Second Byurakan survey (SBS). The BCG magnitudes and radial velocities are revised and up-dated. The sample under study is separated by the criteria: EW([O III]5007)>45{AA} and V_h_<6000km/s nd should be representative of all low-mass galaxies which experience SF bursts.

- Distances and near-infrared luminosities of the brightest galaxies in the Local Volume have been re-evaluated in order to gain a fully homogeneous collection of data for elucidating the framework of the Local Sheet and its relevance to Local Group evolution. It is demonstrated that the Local Sheet is both geometrically and dynamically distinct from the Local Supercluster and that the evolution of the Sheet and Local Group were probably interconnected. The Sheet is inclined by 8{deg} with respect to the Local Supercluster, and the dispersion of giant members about the mid-plane is only 230kpc. A 'Council of Giants' with a radius of 3.75Mpc encompasses the Local Group, demarcating a clear upper limit to the realm of influence of the Local Group. The only two giant elliptical galaxies in the Sheet sit on opposite sides of the Council, raising the possibility that they have somehow shepherded the evolution of the Local Group. The position vector of the Andromeda galaxy with respect to the Milky Way deviates only 11{deg} from the Sheet plane and only 11{deg} from the projected axis of the ellipticals. The Local Group appears to be moving away from a ridge in the potential surface of the Council on a path parallel to the elliptical axis. Spin directions of the giants in the Council are distributed over the sky in a pattern which is very different from that of giants beyond, possibly in reaction to the central mass asymmetry that developed into the Local Group. By matching matter densities of Group and Council giants, the edge of the volume of space most likely to have contributed to the development of the Local Group is shown to be very close to where gravitational forces from the Local Group and the Council balance. The boundary specification reveals that the Local Sheet formed out of a density perturbation of very low amplitude (~10%), but that normal matter was incorporated into galaxies with relatively high efficiency (~40%). It appears that the development of the giants of the Local Sheet was guided by a pre-existing flattened framework of matter.

- We present V- and I-band CCD surface photometry on 234 inclined Sa-Sd galaxies, completed by similar data in B and R for a reduced subsample. In this first paper of a series, the reduction of the data is discussed, and several comparisons are made with other recent works. Radial profiles are presented for the surface brightness and the characteristics of ellipses fitted to isophotes; global, effective, and isophotal parameters are listed.

- The sample of Byurakan-IRAS galaxies (BIG) has been created based on optical identifications of IRAS Point Source Catalog (PSC) at high galactic latitudes. As a result, 1178 galaxies have been identified. 172 of them have been observed spectroscopically with Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO, Armenia) 2.6m, Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO, Russia) 6m and Observatoire de Haute Provence (OHP, France) 1.93m telescopes. Later on, spectra were obtained for more 83 BIG objects in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We have extracted and studied these spectra, classified them and measured spectral features. Diagnostic diagrams have been built to distinguish starbursts (SB), LINERs and Seyfert galaxies. Cross-correlations were made for these objects with multiwavelength (MW) catalogues and their physical properties were studied. Among these 83 objects, 55 HII, 8 Seyfert galaxies, 2 LINERs, 4 other AGN, 6 composite spectrum objects, and 8 other emission-line galaxies have been revealed. Three of these objects are Ultra-Luminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRG).

- Spectroscopic abundance determinations for stars spanning a Hubble time in age are necessary in order to determine unambiguously the evolutionary histories of galaxies. Using FORS1 in multi-object spectroscopy mode on ANTU (UT1) at the ESO VLT on Paranal, we have obtained near-infrared spectra from which we have measured the equivalent widths of the two strongest Ca II triplet lines to determine metal abundances for a sample of red giant branch stars, selected from ESO NTT optical (I, V-I) photometry of three nearby Local Group galaxies: the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal, the Fornax dwarf spheroidal and the dwarf irregular NGC 6822. The summed equivalent width of the two strongest lines in the Ca II triplet absorption-line feature, centred at 8500{AA}, can be readily converted into an [Fe/H] abundance using the previously established calibrations by Armandroff & Da Costa (1991AJ....101.1329A) and Rutledge, Hesser & Stetson (1997, Cat. <J/PASP/109/883>). We have measured metallicities for 37 stars in Sculptor, 32 stars in Fornax and 23 stars in NGC 6822, yielding more precise estimates of the metallicity distribution functions for these galaxies than it is possible to obtain photometrically. In the case of NGC 6822, this is the first direct measurement of the abundances of the intermediate-age and old stellar populations. We find metallicity spreads in each galaxy which are broadly consistent with the photometric width of the red giant branch, although the abundances of individual stars do not always appear to correspond to their colour. This is almost certainly predominantly due to a highly variable star formation rate with time in these galaxies, which results in a non-uniform, non-globular-cluster-like evolution of the Ca/Fe ratio.

- We use Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) intermediate-resolution (R~6500) spectra of individual red giant branch stars in the near-infrared Ca ii triplet (CaT) region to investigate the wide-area metallicity properties and internal kinematics of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph). Our final sample consists of 174 probable members of Sextans with accurate line-of-sight velocities (+/-2km/s) and CaT [Fe/H] measurements (+/-0.2dex).

- We present CCD imaging and spectroscopic data for 176 blue and/or emission-line galaxies from Lists I and II of the Case Northern Sky Survey. Our sample consists of all Case galaxies which lie in the region which overlaps the original Slice of the Universe survey. We use the observational data to investigate the physical properties of the galaxies selected by the surveys to compare with various parameters published in the survey lists, and to investigate the selection characteristics and completeness limit of the survey. The majority of the Case galaxies are energized by regions of active star formation; only 5% of the sample are Seyfert galaxies. The dual selection techniques used (both UV-excess and emission lines) allow the survey to detect star-forming galaxies with a wide range of properties and evolutionary states. In particular, the Case survey selects galaxies with lower levels of activity than most previous surveys. The survey also includes a larger fraction of intermediate and low-luminosity galaxies than would be present in a purely magnitude-limited sample. Although galaxies as faint as m_B_=19 are present in the sample, the completeness limit of the UV-excess selected portion of the survey is closer to m_B_=16. The luminosity function of the Case galaxies is derived and compared with that of the "normal" field galaxies in the same volume of space. The shape of the Case luminosity function is similar to that for the field sample. A surprising result is that 31% of the field galaxy population can be accounted for by galaxies of the type selected in the Case survey.

- We present an all-sky catalog of 451 nearby galaxies, each having an individual distance estimate D<~10Mpc or a radial velocity V_LG_<550km/s. The catalog contains data on basic optical and H I properties of the galaxies, in particular, their diameters, absolute magnitudes, morphological types, circumnuclear region types, optical and H I surface brightnesses, rotational velocities, and indicative mass-to-luminosity and H I mass-to-luminosity ratios, as well as a so-called tidal index, which quantifies the galaxy environment. We expect the catalog completeness to be roughly 70%-80% within 8Mpc.

- This Catalog of Star-Forming Regions in the Galaxy contains coordinates and fluxes of young objects in the radio and infrared, as well as data on the radial velocities of recombination and molecular lines, for more than three thousand star-forming regions. In addition to photometric and kinematic data, we present information on diffuse and reflecting nebulae, dark and molecular clouds, and other objects related to young stars. The catalog consists of two parts. The main catalog lists star-forming regions in order of Galactic longitude and is supplemented by analogous information for star-forming regions in complexes of dark clouds with large angular sizes that are closest to the Sun. In our preliminary study of the catalog data using a formal classification of the star-forming regions, we subdivided these objects into several classes and characterized them as being populated primarily by massive or low-mass stars at early or late stages of the star-formation process. We also distinguish between relatively nearby and distant complexes.
