- Description:
- We study the properties of galaxies with very thin discs (VTDs) using a sample of 85 objects whose stellar disc radial-to-vertical scale ratio determined from photometric decomposition, exceeds 9. We present evidences of similarities between the VTD galaxies and low surface brightness (LSB) disc galaxies, and conclude that both small and giant LSB galaxies may reveal themselves as VTD, edge-on galaxies. Our VTD galaxies are mostly bulgeless, and those with large radial scalelength tend to have redder colours. We performed spectral observations of 22 VTD galaxies with the Dual Imaging Spectrograph on the 3.5 m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory. The spectra with good resolution (R~5000) allow us to determine the distance and the ionized gas rotation curve maximum for the galaxies. Our VTD galaxies have low dust content, in contrast to regular disc galaxies. Apparently, VTD galaxies reside in specific cosmological low-density environments and tend to have less connection with filaments. Comparing a toy model that assumes marginally low star formation in galactic discs with obtained gas kinematics data, we conclude that there is a threshold central surface density of about 88M_{sun}_/pc^2^, which we observe in the case of very thin, rotationally supported galactic discs.

- Virgo Photometry Catalogue (VPC)
- Short Name:
- J/A+AS/127/367
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- The Virgo Photometry Catalogue (VPC) contains independently calibrated surface photometry in the U, B_J_ and R_C_ bands for over 1000 galaxies (including background objects) brighter than B_J25_=19.0 in a 23{deg}^2^ area of the sky centred on R.A., Dec.(1950)= 12h26m, +13{deg}08'. The angular resolution of the photometry varies from band to band and was in each case determined from the FWHM of stellar profiles: 4.75+/-0.1arcsec in the U band, 5.0+/-0.1arcsec in the B_J_ band and 6.0+/-0.1arcsec in the R_C_ band. The photometry was intended for the derivation of accurate magnitudes and colours and is therefore not of high resolution. Stellar contamination of the galaxy sample is minimal, and cannot exceed about 3 faint-end objects in total (i.e. it is less than about 0.25%). Parameters listed for catalogued galaxies include: equatorial coordinates; morphological types; surface-brightness profile parameters (which preserve the majority of the surface photometry information); U, B_J_ and R_C_ isophotal magnitudes; U, B_J_, R_C_ and [transformed] B total magnitudes; (U-B_J_) and (B_J_-R_C_) equal-area colours, apparent angular radii, ellipticities, position angles, heliocentric radial velocities and alternative designations. All total magnitudes and total colours are extrapolated according to the "t" system of Young et al. (1998A&AS..130..173Y). The VPC is based primarily on four UK-Schmidt plates, all of which were scanned using the COSMOS measuring machine at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh. All magnitudes, colours and surface-brightness parameters are derived from numerical integrations of segmented plate-scan data; except for (in 109 cases) saturated and (in 51 cases) inextricably merged images. The latter 51 images are listed in Table 14 (Appendix D) of the original paper, whilst data for the remaining 1129 objects [i.e. including ones for which the VPC photometry is saturated in one or more bands] are listed in the main catalogue.

- VLT spectroscopy of blue massive stars in NGC55
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Description:
- This is the first paper of a series devoted to studying the population of blue massive stars in NGC 55, a galaxy of the Sculptor group at a distance of about 2Mpc. We have obtained optical (3300-6210{AA}), low-resolution spectra of approximately 200 blue massive stars with VLT-FORS2, which we have classified with the aid of Milky Way and Magellanic Cloud standard stars.

- Warps of galaxies
- Short Name:

- Description:
- From a comparison of the different parameters of warped galaxies in the radio, and especially in the visible, we find that: a) No large galaxy (large mass or radius) has been found to have high amplitude in the warp, and there is no correlation of size/mass with the degree of asymmetry of the warp. b) The disc density and the ratio of dark to luminous mass show an opposing trend: smaller values give more asymmetric warps in the inner radii (optical warps) but show no correlation with the amplitude of the warp; however, in the external radii is there no correlation with asymmetry. c) A third anticorrelation appears in a comparison of the amplitude and degree of asymmetry in the warped galaxies. Hence, it seems that very massive dark matter haloes have nothing to do with the formation of warps but only with the degree of symmetry in the inner radii, and are unrelated to the warp shape for the outermost radii. Denser discs show the same dependence.

- WR galaxies and HII regions catalog
- Short Name:
- J/A+AS/136/35
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a new compilation of Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies and extra-galactic HII regions showing broad He II {lambda}4686 emission drawn from the literature. Relevant information on the presence of other broad emission lines (N III {lambda}4640, C IV {lambda}5808 and other) from WR stars of WN and WC subtypes, and other existing broad nebular lines is provided. In total we include 139 known WR galaxies. Among these, 57 objects show both broad He II {lambda}4686 and C IV {lambda}5808 features. In addition to the broad (stellar) He II {lambda}4686 emission, a nebular He II component is well established (suspected) in 44 (54) objects. We find 19 extra-galactic HII regions without WR detections showing nebular He II {lambda}4686 emission. The present sample can be used for a variety of studies on massive stars, interactions of massive stars with the ISM, stellar populations, starburst galaxies etc. The data is accessible electronically and will be updated periodically

- Yellow supergiants in M31
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/703/441
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The yellow supergiant (F- and G-type) content of nearby galaxies can provide a critical test of stellar evolution theory, bridging the gap between the hot, massive stars and the cool red supergiants. But, this region of the color-magnitude diagram is dominated by foreground contamination, requiring membership to somehow be determined. Fortunately, the large negative systemic velocity of M31, coupled to its high rotation rate, provides the means for separating the contaminating foreground dwarfs from the bona fide yellow supergiants within M31. We obtained radial velocities of ~2900 individual targets within the correct color-magnitude range corresponding to masses of 12M_{sun}_ and higher. A comparison of these velocities to those expected from M31's rotation curve reveals 54 rank-1 (near certain) and 66 rank-2 (probable) yellow supergiant members, indicating a foreground contamination >=96%. We expect some modest contamination from Milky Way halo giants among the remainder, particularly for the rank-2 candidates, and indeed follow-up spectroscopy of a small sample eliminates four rank 2's while confirming five others.
