- We investigate the near-infrared evolution of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) from a sample of rich galaxy clusters since z~1. By employing an X-ray selection of LX>10^44^erg/s, we limit environmental effects by selecting BCGs in comparably high-density regions. We find a positive relationship between X-ray and near-infrared luminosity for BCGs in clusters with LX>5x10^44^erg/s. Applying a correction for this relation, we reduce the scatter in the BCG absolute magnitude by a factor of 30 per cent. The near-infrared J-K colour evolution demonstrates that the stellar population in BCGs has been in place since at least z=2, and that we expect a shorter period of star formation than that predicted by current hierarchical merger models. We also confirm that there is a relationship between 'blue' J-K colour and the presence of BCG emission lines associated with star formation in cooling flows.

- We have used FMOS on Subaru to obtain near-infrared spectroscopy of 123 far-infrared-selected galaxies in COSMOS and the key rest-frame optical emission lines. This is the largest sample of infrared galaxies with near-infrared spectroscopy at these redshifts. The far-infrared selection results in a sample of galaxies that are massive systems that span a range of metallicities in comparison with previous optically selected surveys, and thus has a higher active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction and better samples the AGN branch. We establish the presence of AGNs and starbursts in this sample of (U)LIRGs selected as Herschel-PACS and Spitzer-MIPS detections in two redshift bins (z~0.7 and z~1.5) and test the redshift dependence of diagnostics used to separate AGNs from star formation dominated galaxies. In addition, we construct a low-redshift (z~0.1) comparison sample of infrared-selected galaxies and find that the evolution from z~1.5 to today is consistent with an evolving AGN selection line and a range of ISM conditions and metallicities from the models of Kewley et al. (2013ApJ...774L..10K). We find that a large fraction of (U)LIRGs are BPT-selected AGNs using their new redshift-dependent classification line. We compare the position of known X-ray-detected AGNs (67 in total) with the BPT selection and find that the new classification line accurately selects most of these objects (>70%). Furthermore, we identify 35 new (likely obscured) AGNs not selected as such by their X-ray emission. Our results have direct implications for AGN selection at higher redshift with either current (MOSFIRE, KMOS) or future (PFS, MOONS) spectroscopic efforts with near-infrared spectral coverage.

The NIR spectra which cover the 0.90-2.40um wavelength range show hydrogen, molecular hydrogen, helium, sulfur, and iron emission lines. The NIR data for all BCDs have been supplemented by optical spectra.

- We present JHKs observations of the metal-poor ([Fe/H]{<}-1.40) dwarf-irregular galaxies, Leo A and Sextans A, obtained with the WIYN High-resolution Infrared Camera at Kitt Peak. Their near-IR stellar populations are characterized by using a combination of color-magnitude diagrams and by identifying long-period variable stars. We detected red giant and asymptotic giant branch stars, consistent with membership of the galaxy's intermediate-age populations (2-8Gyr old). Matching our data to broadband optical and mid-IR photometry, we determine luminosities, temperatures, and dust-production rates (DPR) for each star. We identify 32 stars in LeoA and 101 stars in Sextans A with a DPR>10^-11^M_{sun}_/yr, confirming that metal-poor stars can form substantial amounts of dust. We also find tentative evidence for oxygen-rich dust formation at low metallicity, contradicting previous models that suggest oxygen-rich dust production is inhibited in metal-poor environments. The total rates of dust injection into the interstellar medium of Leo A and Sextans A are (8.2+/-1.8)x10^-9^M_{sun}_/yr and (6.2+/-0.2)x10^-7^M_{sun}/yr, respectively. The majority of this dust is produced by a few very dusty evolved stars and does not vary strongly with metallicity.

- We obtained new quantitative determinations of the nitrogen abundance and a consistent relation between the nitrogen and oxygen abundances for a sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies located at redshift z<0.1. We carried out this analysis using the CLOUDY code to build detailed photoionization models. We were able to reproduce observed optical narrow emission line intensities for 44 sources compiled from the literature. Our results show that Seyfert 2 nuclei have nitrogen abundances ranging from ~0.3 to ~7.5 times the solar value. We derived the relation log (N/H)=1.05(+/-0.09)x[log(O/H)]-0.35(+/-0.33). Results for N/O versus O/H abundance ratios derived for Seyfert 2 galaxies are in consonance with those recently derived for a sample of extragalactic disc HII regions with high metallicity.

- We have detected six narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies at 37GHz that were previously classified as radio silent and two that were classified as radio quiet. These detections reveal the presumption that NLS1 galaxies labelled radio quiet or radio silent and hosted by spiral galaxies are unable to launch jets to be incorrect. The detections are a plausible indicator of the presence of a powerful, most likely relativistic jet because this intensity of emission at 37GHz cannot be explained by, for example, radiation from supernova remnants. Additionally, one of the detected NLS1 galaxies is a newly discovered source of gamma rays and three others are candidates for future detections.

- The infrared photometric study of SDSS selected Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s) is presented in this paper. We have made cross-identifications for such NLS1s with 2MASS and WISE observations. Finally 992 NLS1s have 2MASS and WISE counterparts. Comparisons of NLS1s with the Broad Line Seyfert 1 (BLS1s) and Seyfert 2 galaxies are made. It is shown that from 1um to 5um NLS1s are redder than BLS1s and Seyfert 2 galaxies possibly due to the richer dust environment in NLS1 nuclei or to the orientation effect while in the longer wavelengths those three kinds of sources have quite similar behavior indicative of radiation mainly from the similar warm starburst-related dust and the related AGN dust. In addition, relations between infrared colors and related (to H{beta}) strengths of some important lines are also investigated. The results show that the related strengths of [FeII] 4570{AA} are positively correlated with infrared colors in the 1-5um region, but negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 12-22um region; the related strength of [OIII] 5007{AA} are negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 1-5um region, but positively correlated with infrared colors in the 12-22um region; the related strength of [NII]6583{AA} are also negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 1-5um region, but positively correlated with infrared colors in the 12-22um region. Therefore it is indicated that the behavior of [FeII] 4570{AA} is just opposed to that for [OIII] 5007{AA} and [NII] 6583{AA} This result may be caused by different origins of such lines.
