- We explore the evolution of the Stellar Mass-Star Formation Rate (SFR)-Metallicity relation using a set of 256 COSMOS and GOODS galaxies in the redshift range 1.90<z<2.35. We present the galaxies' rest-frame optical emission-line fluxes derived from IR-grism spectroscopy with the Hubble Space Telescope and combine these data with SFRs and stellar masses obtained from deep, multi-wavelength (rest-frame UV to IR) photometry. We then compare these measurements to those for a local sample of galaxies carefully matched in stellar mass (7.5<~log(M_{star}_/M_{sun}_<~10.5) and SFR (-0.5<~log(SFR)<~2.5 in M_{sun}_/yr). We find that the distribution of z~2.1 galaxies in stellar mass-SFR-metallicity space is clearly different from that derived for our sample of similarly bright (L_H{beta}_>3x10^40^erg/s) local galaxies, and this offset cannot be explained by simple systematic offsets in the derived quantities. At stellar masses above ~10^9^M_{sun}_ and SFRs above ~10M_{sun}_/yr, the z~2.1 galaxies have higher oxygen abundances than their local counterparts, while the opposite is true for lower-mass, lower-SFR systems.

- Future astrophysical surveys such as J-PAS will produce very large datasets, the so-called "big data", which will require the deployment of accurate and efficient machine-learning (ML) methods. In this work, we analyze the miniJPAS survey, which observed about ~1deg^2^ of the AEGIS field with 56 narrow-band filters and 4 ugri broad-band filters. The miniJPAS primary catalog contains approximately 64 000 objects in the r detection band (mag_AB_<~24), with forced-photometry in all other filters. We discuss the classification of miniJPAS sources into extended (galaxies) and point-like (e.g., stars) objects, which is a step required for the subsequent scientific analyses. We aim at developing an ML classifier that is complementary to traditional tools that are based on explicit modeling. In particular, our goal is to release a value-added catalog with our best classification. In order to train and test our classifiers, we cross-matched the miniJPAS dataset with SDSS and HSC-SSP data, whose classification is trustworthy within the intervals 15<=r<=20 and 18.5<=r<=23.5, respectively. We trained and tested six different ML algorithms on the two cross-matched catalogs: K-nearest neighbors, decision trees, random forest (RF), artificial neural networks, extremely randomized trees (ERT), and an ensemble classifier. This last is a hybrid algorithm that combines artificial neural networks and RF with the J-PAS stellar and galactic loci classifier. As input for the ML algorithms we used the magnitudes from the 60 filters together with their errors, with and without the morphological parameters. We also used the mean point spread function in the r detection band for each pointing. We find that the RF and ERT algorithms perform best in all scenarios. When the full magnitude range of 15<=r<=23.5 is analyzed, we find an area under the curve AUC=0.957 with RF when photometric information alone is used, and AUC=0.986 with ERT when photometric and morphological information is used together. When morphological parameters are used, the full width at half maximum is the most important feature. When photometric information is used alone, we observe that broad bands are not necessarily more important than narrow bands, and errors (the width of the distribution) are as important as the measurements (central value of the distribution). In other words, it is apparently important to fully characterize the measurement. ML algorithms can compete with traditional star and galaxy classifiers; they outperform the latter at fainter magnitudes (r>~21). We use our best classifiers, with and without morphology, in order to produce a value-added catalog.

- We present a comprehensive analysis of the spatial, kinematic and chemical properties of stars and globular clusters (GCs) in the 'ordinary' elliptical galaxy NGC 4494 using data from the Keck and Subaru telescopes. We derive galaxy surface brightness and colour profiles out to large galactocentric radii. We compare the latter to metallicities derived using the near-infrared Calcium Triplet. We obtain stellar kinematics out to ~3.5 effective radii.

- The question of the existence of active and prominent tidal disruption around various Galactic dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies remains controversial. That debate often centers on the nature (bound vs. unbound) of extended populations of stars claimed to lie outside the bounds of single King profiles fitted to the density distributions of dSph centers. However, the more fundamental issue of the very existence of the previously reported extended populations is still contentious. We present a critical evaluation of the debate centering on one particular dSph, Carina, for which claims both for and against the existence of stars beyond the King limiting radius have been made.

- The Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy is the only galaxy of this type that shows clearly episodic star formation separated by long pauses. Here we present metallicities for 437 radial velocity members of this Galactic satellite. The metallicities and radial velocities were measured as part of a Large Programme with the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory, Chile. We obtained medium-resolution spectroscopy with the multiobject spectrograph FLAMES. Our target red giants cover the entire projected surface area of Carina. Our spectra are centered at the near-infrared CaII triplet, which is a well-established metallicity indicator for old and intermediate-age red giants. The resulting data sample provides the largest collection of spectroscopically derived metallicities for a Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy to date.

- We present the results of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting analysis for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z~5 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N) and its flanking fields (the GOODS-FF). With the publicly available Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) images in the GOODS-N and IRAC data in the GOODS-FF, we constructed the rest-frame UV to optical SEDs for a large sample (~100) of UV-selected galaxies at z~5. Comparing the observed SEDs with model SEDs generated with a population synthesis code, we derived a best-fit set of parameters (stellar mass, age, color excess, and star formation rate) for each of the sample LBGs. The derived stellar masses range from 10^8^ to 10^11^M_{sun}_ with a median value of 4.1x10^9^M_{sun}_.

- We use the Herschel-ATLAS survey to conduct the first large-scale statistical study of the submillimetre properties of optically selected galaxies. Using ~80000 r-band selected galaxies from 126deg^2^ of the GAMA survey, we stack into submillimetre imaging at 250, 350 and 500um to gain unprecedented statistics on the dust emission from galaxies at z<0.35. We find that low-redshift galaxies account for 5 per cent of the cosmic 250-um background (4 per cent at 350um; 3 per cent at 500um), of which approximately 60 per cent comes from 'blue' and 20 per cent from 'red' galaxies (rest-frame g-r).

- The statistical analysis of large sample of strong lensing events can be a powerful tool to extract astrophysical or cosmological valuable information. Their selection using submillimetre galaxies has been demonstrated to be very effective with more than ~200 proposed candidates in the case of Herschel-ATLAS data and several tens in the case of the South Pole Telescope. However, the number of confirmed events is still relatively low, i.e. a few tens, mostly because of the lengthy observational validation process on individual events. In this work we propose a new methodology with a statistical selection approach to increase by a factor of ~5 the number of such events within the Herschel-ATLAS data set. Although the methodology can be applied to address several selection problems, it has particular benefits in the case of the identification of strongly lensed galaxies: objectivity, minimal initial constrains in the main parameter space, and preservation of statistical properties. The proposed methodology is based on the Bhattacharyya distance as a measure of the similarity between probability distributions of properties of two different cross-matched galaxies. The particular implementation for the aim of this work is called SHALOS and it combines the information of four different properties of the pair of galaxies: angular separation, luminosity percentile, redshift, and the ratio of the optical to the submillimetre flux densities. The SHALOS method provides a ranked list of strongly lensed galaxies. The number of candidates within ~340{deg}^2^ of the Herschel-ATLAS surveyed area for the final associated probability, P_tot_>0.7, is 447 and they have an estimated mean amplification factor of 3.12 for a halo with a typical cluster mass. Additional statistical properties of the SHALOS candidates, as the correlation function or the source number counts, are in agreement with previous results indicating the statistical lensing nature of the selected sample.

- We present the results of spectroscopy of 71 objects with steep and ultra-steep spectra (alpha<-0.9, S{prop.to}nu^alpha^) from the "Big Trio" (RATAN-600-VLA-BTA) project, performed with the "Scorpio" spectrograph on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russian Academy of Sciences). Redshifts were determined for these objects. We also present several other parameters of the sources, such as their R magnitudes, maximum radio sizes in seconds of arc, flux densities at 500, 1425, and 3940MHz, radio luminosities at 500 and 3940MHz, and morphology. Of the total number of radio galaxies studied, four have redshifts 1<=z<2, three have 2<=z<3, one has 3<=z<4, and one has z=4.51. Thirteen sources have redshifts 0.7<z<1 and 15 have 0.2<z<0.7. Of all the quasars studied, five have redshifts 0.7<z<1, seven have 1<=z<2, four have 2<=z<3, and one has z=3.57. We did not detect any spectral lines for 17 objects.
