- We analyse the galaxy population and dynamics of the galaxy cluster A576; the observational constraints include 281 redshifts (230 new), R-band CCD galaxy photometry over a 2h^-1^Mpcx2h^-1^Mpc region centered on the cluster, an Einstein IPC X-ray image, and an Einstein MPC X-ray spectrum. We focus on an 86% complete magnitude-limited sample (R_23.5_<17) of 169 cluster galaxies. The cluster galaxies with emission lines in their spectra have a larger velocity dispersion and are significantly less clustered on this 2h^-1^Mpc scale than galaxies without emission lines. We show that excluding the emission-line galaxies from the cluster sample decreases the velocity dispersion by 18% and the virial mass estimate by a factor of 2. The central cluster region contains a non-emission galaxy population and an intracluster medium which is significantly cooler ({sigma}_core_=387^+250^_-105_km/s and T_X_=1.6-0.3/+0.4keV at 90% confidence) than the global populations ({sigma}=977^+124^_-96_km/s for the non-emission population and T_X_>4keV at 90% confidence). Because (1) the low-dispersion galaxy population is no more luminous than the global population and (2) the evidence for a cooling flow is weak, we suggest that the core of A576 may contain the remnants of a lower mass subcluster. We examine the cluster mass, baryon fraction, and luminosity function. The cluster virial mass varies significantly depending on the galaxy sample used. Consistency between the hydrostatic and virial estimators can be achieved if (1) the gas temperature at r~1h^-1^Mpc is T_X_~8keV (the best-fit value) and (2) several velocity outliers are excluded from the virial calculation. Although the best-fit Schechter function parameters and the ratio of galaxy to gas mass in A576 are typical of other clusters, the baryon fraction is relatively low. Using the consistent cluster binding mass, we show that the gas mass fraction is ~3h^-3/2^% and the baryon fraction is ~4%.

- The mergers of galaxy clusters are the most energetic events in the universe after the Big Bang. An ever increasing fraction of local clusters exhibit signs of recent or past mergers. Our goal is to probe how these mergers affect the evolution and content of their member galaxies. We specifically aim to answer the following questions: Is the quenching of star formation in merging clusters enhanced when compared with relaxed clusters? Is the quenching accompanied by a (short lived) burst of star formation? We obtained optical spectroscopy of $>400$ galaxies in the field of the merging cluster Abell 520. We combine these observations with archival data to get a comprehensive picture of the state of star formation in the members of this merging cluster. Finally, we compare these observations with a control sample of 10 non-merging clusters at the same redshift from The Arizona Cluster Redshift Survey (ACReS). We split the member galaxies in passive, star forming or recently quenched depending on their spectra. The core of the merger shows a decreased fraction of star-forming galaxies compared to clusters in the non-merging sample. This region, dominated by passive galaxies, is extended along the axis of the merger. We find evidence of rapid quenching of the galaxies during the core passage with no signs of a star burst on the time scales of the merger. Additionally, we report the tentative discovery of an infalling group along the main filament feeding the merger, currently at ~2.5Mpc from the merger centre. This group contains a high fraction of star forming galaxies as well as ~2/3 of all the recently quenched galaxies in our survey.

- We present stellar population parameters of 12 elliptical and S0 galaxies in the Coma cluster around and including the cD galaxy NGC 4874, based on spectra obtained using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck II Telescope. Our data are among the most precise and accurate absorption-line strengths yet obtained for cluster galaxies, allowing us to examine in detail the zero-point and scatter in the stellar population properties of Coma cluster early-type galaxies (ETGs).

- We present measurements of the UV/optical emission line parameters in a sample of 158 active galactic nuclei observed with the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), prior to the installation of COSTAR. We use an automated technique that accounts for galactic reddening, includes iron emission blends, galactic and intrinsic absorption lines, and performs multicomponent fits to the emission line profiles. We present measured line parameters (equivalent width and FWHM) for a large number (28) of different UV/optical lines, including upper limits for undetected lines.

- We explore the structure of galaxy cluster A2029 and its surroundings based on intensive spectroscopy along with X-ray and weak lensing observations. The redshift survey includes 4376 galaxies (1215 spectroscopic cluster members) within 40' of the cluster center; the redshifts are included here. Two subsystems, A2033 and a southern infalling group (SIG), appear in the infall region based on the spectroscopy, as well as on the weak lensing and X-ray maps. The complete redshift survey of A2029 also identifies at least 12 foreground and background systems (10 are extended X-ray sources) in the A2029 field; we include a census of their properties. The X-ray luminosities (L_X_)-velocity dispersions ({sigma}_cl_) scaling relations for A2029, A2033, SIG, and the foreground/background systems are consistent with the known cluster scaling relations. The combined spectroscopy, weak lensing, and X-ray observations provide a robust measure of the masses of A2029, A2033, and SIG. The total mass of the infalling groups (A2033 and SIG) is ~60% of the M200 of the primary cluster, A2029. Simple dynamical considerations suggest that A2029 will accrete these subsystems in the next few Gyr. In agreement with simulations and other clusters observed in a similar redshift range, the total mass in the A2029 infall region is comparable to the A2029 M200 and will mostly be accreted in the long-term future.

- We present the results from an extensive spectroscopic survey of the central region of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199 (A2199) at z=0.03. By combining 775 new redshifts from the MMT/Hectospec observations with the data in the literature, we construct a large sample of 1624 galaxies with measured redshifts at R<30', which results in high spectroscopic completeness at r_petro,0_<20.5 (77%). We use these data to study the kinematics and clustering of galaxies, focusing on the comparison with those of the intracluster medium (ICM) from Suzaku X-ray observations. We identify 406 member galaxies of A2199 at R<30' using the caustic technique. The velocity dispersion profile of cluster members appears smoothly connected to the stellar velocity dispersion profile of the cD galaxy. The luminosity function is well fitted with a Schechter function at M_r_< -15. The radial velocities of cluster galaxies generally agree well with those of the ICM, but there are some regions where the velocity difference between the two is about a few hundred kilometers per second. The cluster galaxies show a hint of global rotation at R<5' with v_rot_=300-600km/s, but the ICM in the same region does not show such rotation. We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm to the cluster galaxy sample at R<60' and identify 32 group candidates, and examine the spatial correlation between the galaxy groups and X-ray emission. This extensive survey in the central region of A2199 provides an important basis for future studies of interplay among the galaxies, the ICM, and the dark matter in the cluster.

- A rich spectroscopic census of members of the local massive cluster A2029 includes 1215 members of A2029 and its two infalling groups, A2033 and the Southern Infalling Group. The two infalling groups are identified in spectroscopic, X-ray, and weak-lensing maps. We identify active galactic nuclei (AGNs), star-forming galaxies, E+A galaxies, and quiescent galaxies based on the spectroscopy. The fractions of AGN and post-starburst E+A galaxies in A2029 are similar to those of other clusters. We derive the stellar mass (M_*_)-metallicity relation of A2029 based on 227 star-forming members; A2029 members within 10^9^M_{sun}_<M_*_<10^9.5^M_{sun}_ are more metal-rich than Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies within the same mass range. We utilize the spectroscopic index D_n_4000, a strong age indicator, to trace past and future evolution of the A2029 system. The median D_n_4000 of the members decreases as the projected clustercentric distance increases for all three subsystems. The D_n_4000-M_*_ relations of the members in A2029 and its two infalling groups differ significantly, indicating the importance of stochastic effects for understanding the evolution of cluster galaxy populations.

- We report on the serendipitous discovery in the Blanco Cosmology Survey (BCS) imaging data of a z=0.9057 galaxy that is being strongly lensed by a massive galaxy cluster at a redshift of z=0.3838. The lens (BCS J2352-5452) was discovered while examining i- and z-band images being acquired in 2006 October during a BCS observing run. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph instrument on the Gemini-South 8m telescope confirmed the lensing nature of this system. Using weak-plus-strong lensing, velocity dispersion, cluster richness N_200_, and fitting to a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) cluster mass density profile, we have made three independent estimates of the mass M_200_ which are all very consistent with each other. The combination of the results from the three methods gives M_200_=(5.1+/-1.3)x10^14^M_{sun}_, which is fully consistent with the individual measurements. The final NFW concentration c_200_ from the combined fit is c_200_=5.4^+1.4^_-1.1_. We have compared our measurements of M_200_ and c_200_ with predictions for (1) clusters from {Lambda}CDM simulations, (2) lensing-selected clusters from simulations, and (3) a real sample of cluster lenses.

- We present the initial results of a spectroscopic study of a sample of cD galaxy clusters. The goal of this program is to study the dynamics of the clusters, with emphasis on determining the nature and frequency of peculiar velocity cD galaxies. In this paper we present redshifts for 611 galaxies in the fields of the rich Abell clusters A193, A399, A401, A1795, A1809, A2063, and A2124. We discuss our data reduction techniques, and compare our derived velocities with previously published values. We find a frequency of emission line galaxies of ~6% in clusters, a factor of 2-3 less than the field.
