- We present a search for long-period variable (LPV) stars among giant branch stars in M15 which, at [Fe/H]~-2.3, is one of the most metal-poor Galactic globular clusters. We use multicolour optical photometry from the 0.6-m Keele Thornton and 2-m Liverpool Telescopes. Variability of {delta}V~0.15mag is detected in K757 and K825 over unusually long time-scales of nearly a year, making them the most metal-poor LPVs found in a Galactic globular cluster. K825 is placed on the long secondary period sequence, identified for metal-rich LPVs, though no primary period is detectable. We discuss this variability in the context of dust production and stellar evolution at low metallicity, using additional spectra from the 6.5-m Magellan (Las Campanas) telescope. A lack of dust production, despite the presence of gaseous mass loss raises questions about the production of dust and the intracluster medium of this cluster.

- We present the results from 10 nights of observations of the globular cluster NGC 6981 (M72) in the V, R and I Johnson wavebands. We employed the technique of difference image analysis to perform precision differential photometry on the time-series images, which enabled us to carry out a census of the understudied variable star population of the cluster. We show that 20 suspected variables in the literature are actually non-variable, and we confirm the variable nature of another 29 variables while refining their ephemerides. We also detect 11 new RR Lyrae variables and three new SX Phe variables, bringing the total confirmed variable star count in NGC 6981 to 43. We performed Fourier decomposition of the light curves for a subset of RR Lyrae stars and used the Fourier parameters to estimate the fundamental physical parameters of the stars using relations available in the literature. Mean values of these physical parameters have allowed us to estimate the physical parameters of the parent cluster. We derive a metallicity of [Fe/H]_ZW_~-1.48+/-0.03 on the Zinn & West scale (or [Fe/H]_UVES_~-1.38+/-0.03 on the new Carretta et al. scale) for NGC 6981, and distances of ~16.73+/-0.36 and ~16.68+/-0.36kpc from analysis of the RR0 and RR1 stars separately. We also confirm the Oosterhoff type I classification for the cluster, and show that our colour-magnitude data are consistent with the age of ~12.75+/-0.75Gyr derived by Dotter et al.

- We present the analysis of 11 nights of V and I time-series observations of the globular cluster NGC 1904 (M 79). Using this we searched for variable stars in this cluster and attempted to refine the periods of known variables, making use of a time baseline spanning almost 8 years. We use our data to derive the metallicity and distance of NGC 1904. We used difference imaging to reduce our data to obtain high-precision light curves of variable stars. We then estimated the cluster parameters by performing a Fourier decomposition of the light curves of RR Lyrae stars for which a good period estimate was possible. We also derive an estimate for the age of the cluster by fitting theoretical isochrones to our colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). Out of 13 stars previously classified as variables, we confirm that 10 are bona fide variables. We cannot detect variability in one other within the precision of our data, while there are two which are saturated in our data frames, but we do not find sufficient evidence in the literature to confirm their variability. We also detect a new RR Lyrae variable, giving a total number of confirmed variable stars in NGC 1904 of 11. Using the Fourier parameters, we find a cluster metallicity [Fe/H]_ZW_=-1.63+/-0.14, or [Fe/H]_UVES_=-1.57+/-0.18, and a distance of 13.3+/-0.4kpc (using RR0 variables) or 12.9kpc (using the one RR1 variable in our sample for which Fourier decomposition was possible).

We used our data to search for variable stars in this cluster and refine the periods of known variables; we then used our variable star light curves to derive values for the cluster's parameters. We then estimated the cluster parameters by performing a Fourier decomposition of the light curves of RR Lyrae stars for which a good period estimate was possible. Out of 13 stars previously catalogued as variables, we find that only 4 are bona fide variables. We detect two new RR Lyrae variables, and confirm two additional RR Lyrae candidates from the literature. We also detect four other new variables, including an eclipsing blue straggler system, and an SX Phoenicis star. This amounts to a total number of confirmed variable stars in M 30 of 12. We perform Fourier decomposition of the light curves of the RR Lyrae stars to derive cluster parameters using empirical relations. We find a cluster metallicity [Fe/H]_ZW_=-2.01+/-0.04, or [Fe/H]_UVES_=-2.11+/-0.06, and a distance of 8.32+/-0.20kpc (using RR0 variables), 8.10 kpc (using one RR1 variable), and 8.35+/-0.42kpc (using our SX Phoenicis star detection in M 30). Fitting isochrones to the CMD, we estimate an age of 13.0+/-1.0Gyr for M 30.

- We have used the high-resolution camera at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to obtain VRI photometry of the globular clusters in the innermost 140 of the M87 halo. The results are used to discuss several issues concerning the formation and evolution of globular cluster systems in supergiant elliptical galaxies like M87. Our principal results are as follows: (1) From our deep R-band photometry of the cluster population, we find no significant change in the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) with galactocentric radius, for cluster masses M>=10^5^M_{sun}_. This result places constraints on current theoretical predictions of the rate of cluster evolution by tidal shocking and evaporation, indicating that the main effects of dynamical evolution may be felt only on lower mass clusters (<~10^5^M_{sun}_) that are below the faint limit of most current observations. (2) Combining our V-I color indices with other data in the literature, we derive the metallicity gradient and mean metallicity of the clusters from r=9" out to r~500" (~0.7-35kpc). Within the core radius r_c_=1' of the globular cluster system, the metallicity distribution is uniform, but at larger radii the mean metallicity declines steadily as Z/Z_{sun}_~r^-0.9^. (3) The various options for explaining the existence of high specific frequency galaxies like M87 are evaluated. (4) We offer a new explanation for the large observed S_N_ range among the brightest cluster elliptical galaxies (BCGs). It is suggested that these central supergiant E galaxies formed in an exceptionally turbulent or high-density environment which favored a very rapid initial star formation burst. From a total sample of 30 BCGs, we derive empirical scaling relations that relate to this hypothesis. Our analysis favors the view that BCGs began forming at redshifts z>~5, distinctly earlier than most other galaxies.

- We present accurate integrated-light photometry in Johnson/Cousins V, R and I for a sample of 28 globular clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The majority of the clusters in our sample have reliable age and metallicity estimates available in the literature. The sample encompasses ages between 50Myr and 7Gyr, and metallicities ([Fe/H]) between 1.5 and 0.0dex. The sample is dominated by clusters of ages between roughly 0.5 and 2Gyr, an age range during which the bolometric luminosity of simple stellar populations is dominated by evolved red giant branch stars and thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars whose theoretical colours are rather uncertain. The VRI colours presented in this paper have been used to calibrate stellar population synthesis model predictions.

- We report the results of CCD V and R photometry of the RR Lyrae stars in M2. The periodicities of most variables are revised and new ephemerides are calculated. Light-curve decomposition of the RR Lyrae stars was carried out and the corresponding mean physical parameters [Fe/H]=-1.47, Teff=6276K, logL=1.63L_{sun}_ and M_V_=0.71 from nine RRab and [Fe/H]=-1.61, M=0.54M_{sun}_, Teff=7215K, logL=1.74L_{sun}_ and M_V_=0.71 from two RRc stars were calculated. A comparison of the radii obtained from the above luminosity and temperature with predicted radii from non-linear convective models is discussed. The estimated mean distance to the cluster is 10.49+/-0.15kpc. These results place M2 correctly in the general globular cluster sequences for Oosterhoff type, mass, luminosity and temperature, all as a function of the metallicity. Mean relationships for M, logL/L_{sun}_, Teff and MV as a function of [Fe/H] for a family of globular clusters are offered. These trends are consistent with evolutionary and structural notions on the horizontal branch. Eight new variables are reported.

- We report the results of CCD V and r photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5466. The difference image analysis technique adopted in this work has resulted in accurate time series photometry even in crowded regions of the cluster enabling us to discover five probably semi-regular variables. We present new photometry of three previously known eclipsing binaries and six SX Phe stars. The light curves of the RR Lyrae stars have been decomposed in their Fourier harmonics and their fundamental physical parameters have been estimated using semi-empirical calibrations. The zero points of the metallicity, luminosity and temperature scales are discussed and our Fourier results are transformed accordingly. The average iron abundance and distance to the Sun derived from individual RR Lyrae stars, indicate values of [Fe/H]=-1.91+/-0.19 and D=16.0+/-0.6kpc, or a true distance modulus of 16.02+/-0.09mag, for the parent cluster. These values are respectively in the Zinn & West metallicity scale and in agreement with recent luminosity determinations for the RR Lyrae stars in the LMC. The M_V_-[Fe/H] relation has been recalibrated as M_V_=+(0.18+/-0.03)[Fe/H]+(0.85+/-0.05) using the mean values derived by the Fourier technique on RR Lyrae s tars in a family of clusters. This equation predicts M_V_=0.58mag for [Fe/H]=-1.5, in agreement with the average absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars calculated from several independent methods. The M_V-[Fe/H] relationship and the value of [Fe/H] have implications on the age of the globular clusters when determined from the magnitude difference between the horizontal branch and the turn off point (HB-TO method). The above results however would not imply a change in the age of NGC 5466, of 12.5+/-0.9Gyr, estimated from recent isochrone fitting.

- We report the results of CCD V and R photometry of the RR Lyrae stars known in NGC 4147. The periodicities of most variables are revised and new ephemerides are calculated. The Blazhko effect has been detected in V2 and V6. Three previously reported variables; V5, V9, and V15 are found to be non-variable. A new variable V18 was discovered with a period of 0.49205-days and an amplitude of 0.15mag. Using the approach of Fourier decomposition of the light curves, the physical parameters of the RRab and RRc variables were estimated. The cluster is of the Oosterhoff type I. With the newly values [Fe/H]=-1.22+/-0.31 and 16.8+/-1.3kpc, the cluster fits very well into the Oosterhoff type-metallicity and metallicity-temperature sequence found in globular clusters. A comparison with ZAHB models indicates that the RRab stars have not yet evolved off the horizontal branch, a result consistent with the mean period of the RRab variables and with the metallicity of the cluster derived in this work.

- We use deep near-IR photometry of the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Survey and deep DECam Plane Survey (DECaPS) optical photometry to confirm the physical reality of the candidate globular cluster (GC) Minni 22, which is located in the Galactic bulge. This object, which was detected as a high density region in our maps of bulge red giants, is now confirmed as a real GC based on the optical and near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. We also recover three known fundamental mode (ab type) RR Lyrae stars within 2 arcmin of the cluster center. The presence of RR Lyrae stars also seems to confirm Minni 22 as a bonafide old and metal-poor GC. We estimate a cluster reddening E(J-Ks)=0.6mag and determine its heliocentric distance D=7.4+/-0.3kpc. The optical and near-IR color-magnitude diagrams reveal well-defined red giant branches in all cases, including a red giant branch bump at Ks=13.30+/-0.05mag. The comparison with theoretical isochrones yields a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.3+/-0.3dex, and age of t~11.2Gyr. This is a good example of a new low-luminosity (M_V_=-6.2mag) GC found in the central bulge of the Milky Way. After discussing the different ways to confirm the existence of bulge GC candidates, we find that one of the best methods is to use the CMDs from the combination of the DECaPS+VVV photometries.
