- We present for the first time a catalogue of SX Phe-type pulsating variables in globular clusters. In addition, SX Phe variables discovered in the Carina dwarf galaxy and other ones probably belonging to the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy are included. This catalogue is intended to be an up-dated list of all the SX Phe stars, in globular clusters and galaxies, known until now, covering information published up to January, 2000. In summary, 149 variables are presented in our list for SX Phe-type variables belonging to 18 globular clusters and 2 galaxies. Some relevant distributions are also shown. The analysis of metal abundances and mean periods shows that both parameters are correlated in the sense that the periods of the variables are longer as the metallicity of the stellar system is higher.

- B and V CCD photometry from 1984 through 1994 is presented for 50 RR Lyrae stars and two red variable stars in the globular cluster NGC 7006. New determinations of pulsation periods and period change rates are given and used to plot B light curves. The new photometry is combined with previously published photometry obtained from photographic plates taken in the 1930s, the 1950s and 1984 and used to derive O - C diagrams and new period change rates. V light curves based on the CCD data are also displayed, and colors derived from mean values of B and V are given. Period-amplitude diagrams and the color-magnitude diagram for the variables are shown.

- The Andromeda galaxy, M31, has several times the number of globular clusters found in the Milky Way. It contains a correspondingly larger number of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with globular clusters, and as such can be used to investigate the cluster properties that lead to X-ray binary formation. The best tracer of the spatial structure of M31 globulars is the high-resolution imaging available from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and we have used HST data to derive structural parameters for 29 LMXB-hosting M31 globular clusters. These measurements are combined with structural parameters from the literature for a total of 41 (of 50 known) LMXB clusters and a comparison sample of 65 non-LMXB clusters. Structural parameters measured in blue bandpasses are found to be slightly different (smaller core radii and higher concentrations) than those measured in red bandpasses; this difference is enhanced in LMXB clusters and could be related to stellar population differences. Clusters with LMXBs show higher collision rates for their mass compared to clusters without LMXBs, and collision rates estimated at the core radius show larger offsets than rates estimated at the half-light radius. These results are consistent with the dynamical formation scenario for LMXBs. A logistic regression analysis finds that, as expected, the probability of a cluster hosting an LMXB increases with increasing collision rate and proximity to the galaxy center. The same analysis finds that probability of a cluster hosting an LMXB decreases with increasing cluster mass at a fixed collision rate, although we caution that this could be due to sample selection effects. Metallicity is found to be a less important predictor of LMXB probability than collision rate, mass, or distance, even though LMXB clusters have a higher metallicity on average. This may be due to the interaction of location and metallicity: a sample of M31 LMXBs with a greater range in galactocentric distance would likely contain more metal-poor clusters and make it possible to disentangle the two effects.

- We present a new set of model predictions for 16 Lick absorption line indices from H{delta} through Fe5335 and UBV colors for single stellar populations with ages ranging between 1 and 15Gyr, [Fe/H] ranging from -1.3 to +0.3, and variable abundance ratios. The models are based on accurate stellar parameters for the Jones library stars and a new set of fitting functions describing the behavior of line indices as a function of effective temperature, surface gravity, and iron abundance. The abundances of several key elements in the library stars have been obtained from the literature in order to characterize the abundance pattern of the stellar library, thus allowing us to produce model predictions for any set of abundance ratios desired. We develop a method to estimate mean ages and abundances of iron, carbon, nitrogen, magnesium, and calcium that explores the sensitivity of the various indices modeled to those parameters. The models are compared to high-S/N data for Galactic clusters spanning the range of ages, metallicities, and abundance patterns of interest. Essentially all line indices are matched when the known cluster parameters are adopted as input. Comparing the models to high-quality data for galaxies in the nearby universe, we reproduce previous results regarding the enhancement of light elements and the spread in the mean luminosity-weighted ages of early-type galaxies.

- CCD observations of stars in the region of the globular cluster M15 have been used to obtain astrometric positions of 1092 stars in the central part of the cluster within the FK5 system. The purpose of this catalogue is to calibrate astrometrically CCD observations by means of measuring the positions of stars in M15. The comparison with other catalogues and with measurements of photographic plates of the central part of M15 indicates a mean accuracy of about 50 to 70mas for each star of our catalogue.

- We have compiled a catalog of equatorial coordinates for 3398 variable stars in those 103 globular clusters that, according to the most recent update of the Catalogue of Variable Stars in Globular Clusters (CVSGC) available in 2008 June (essentially that of 2002, with some more recent additions), had known variable stars. Our catalog is in the electronic attachment to this article. We found that 216 stars are also contained in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (GCVS) or in the New Catalogue of Suspected Variable Stars (with Supplement); most of these identifications were not previously recognized. We also detected a number of previously unknown cross-identifications among stars of the CVSGC. Our results allow us to initiate compilation of name lists in order to add to the GCVS those stars from the CVSGC that satisfy GCVS naming criteria.

- We derived Potassium abundances in red giant branch stars in the Galactic globular clusters NGC 104 (144 stars), NGC 6752 (134 stars) and NGC 6809 (151 stars) using high-resolution spectra collected with FLAMES at the ESO - Very Large Telescope. In the considered samples we do not find significant intrinsic spreads in [K/Fe] (confirming the previous findings by Carretta et al.), at variance with the cases of the massive clusters NGC 2419 and NGC 2808. Additionally, marginally significant [K/Fe]-[O/Fe] anti-correlations are found in NGC 104 and NGC 6809, and [K/Fe]-[Na/Fe] correlations are found in NGC 104 and NGC 6752. No evidence of [K/Fe]-[Mg/Fe] anti-correlation are found. The results of our analysis are consistent with a scenario in which the process leading to the multi-populations in globular clusters implies also enrichment in the K abundance, the amplitude of the associated [K/Fe] enhancement becoming measurable only in stars showing the most extreme effects of O and Mg depletion. Stars enhanced in [K/Fe] have been found so far only in clusters harbouring some Mg-poor stars, while the other globulars, without a Mg-poor sub-population, show small or null [K/Fe] spreads.

- Two independent studies recently uncovered two distinct populations among giants in the distant, massive globular cluster (GC) NGC 2419. One of these populations has normal magnesium (Mg) and potassium (K) abundances for halo stars: enhanced Mg and roughly solar K. The other population has extremely depleted Mg and very enhanced K. To better anchor the peculiar NGC 2419 chemical composition, we have investigated the behavior of K in a few red giant branch stars in NGC 6752, NGC 6121, NGC 1904, and {omega} Cen. To verify that the high K abundances are intrinsic and not due to some atmospheric features in giants, we also derived K abundances in less evolved turn-off and subgiant stars of clusters 47 Tuc, NGC 6752, NGC 6397, and NGC 7099. We normalized the K abundance as a function of the cluster metallicity using 21 field stars analyzed in a homogeneous manner. For all GCs of our sample, the stars lie in the K-Mg abundance plane on the same locus occupied by the Mg-normal population in NGC 2419 and by field stars. This holds for both giants and less-evolved stars. At present, NGC 2419 seems unique among GCs.
