- Description:
- Recent studies of the stellar population in the solar neighborhood (<20pc) suggest that there are undetected white dwarfs (WDs) in multiple systems with main-sequence companions. Detecting these hidden stars and obtaining a more complete census of nearby WDs is important for our understanding of stellar and galactic evolution, as well as the study of explosive phenomena. In an attempt to uncover these hidden WDs, we present intermediate resolution spectroscopy over the wavelength range of 3000-25000{AA} of 101 nearby M dwarfs (dMs), observed with the Very Large Telescope X-Shooter spectrograph. For each star we search for a hot component superimposed on the dM spectrum. X-Shooter has excellent blue sensitivity and thus can reveal a faint hot WD despite the brightness of its red companion. Visual examination shows no clear evidence of a WD in any of the spectra. We place upper limits on the effective temperatures of WDs that may still be hiding by fitting dM templates to the spectra and modeling the WD spectra. On average our survey is sensitive to WDs hotter than about 5300K. This suggests that the frequency of WD companions of Teff>~5300K with separation of the order of <~50 au among the local dM population is <3% at the 95% confidence level.

- Absolute reflectance & new calibration site of the Moon
- Short Name:

- Description:
- How bright the Moon is forms a simple but fundamental and important question. Although numerous efforts have been made to answer this question such as use of sophisticated electro-optical measurements and suggestions for calibration sites, the answer is still debated. An in situ measurement with a calibration panel on the surface of the Moon is crucial for obtaining the accurate absolute reflectance and resolving the debate. China's Chang'E-3 (CE-3) "Yutu" rover accomplished this type of measurement using the Visible-Near Infrared Spectrometer (VNIS). The measurements of the VNIS, which were at large emission and phase angles, complement existing measurements for the range of photometric geometry. The in situ reflectance shows that the CE-3 landing site is very dark with an average reflectance of 3.86% in the visible bands. The results are compared with recent mission instruments: the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Wide Angle Camera (WAC), the Spectral Profiler (SP) on board the SELENE, the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M^3^) on board the Chandrayaan-1, and the Chang'E-1 Interference Imaging Spectrometer (IIM). The differences in the measurements of these instruments are very large and indicate inherent differences in their absolute calibration. The M^3^ and IIM measurements are smaller than LROC WAC and SP, and the VNIS measurement falls between these two pairs. When using the Moon as a radiance source for the on-orbit calibration of spacecraft instruments, one should be cautious about the data. We propose that the CE-3 landing site, a young and homogeneous surface, should serve as the new calibration site.

- Absorption & emission lines and RVel for vA 351
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/161/285
- Date:
- 08 Mar 2022
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We extend results first announced by Franz et al., that identified vA351=H346 in the Hyades as a multiple star system containing a white dwarf. With Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor fringe tracking and scanning, and more recent speckle observations, all spanning 20.7years, we establish a parallax, relative orbit, and mass fraction for two components, with a period, P=2.70yr and total mass 2.1M{sun}. With ground-based radial velocities from the McDonald Observatory Otto Struve 2.1m Telescope Sandiford Spectrograph, and Center for Astrophysics Digital Speedometers, spanning 37 years, we find that component B consists of BC, two M-dwarf stars orbiting with a very short period (P_BC_=0.749days), having a mass ratio M_C_/M_B_=0.95. We confirm that the total mass of the system can only be reconciled with the distance and component photometry by including a fainter, higher-mass component. The quadruple system consists of three M dwarfs (A, B, C) and one white dwarf (D). We determine individual M-dwarf masses M_A_=0.53{+/-}0.10M{sun}, M_B_=0.43{+/-}0.04M{sun}, and M_C_=0.41{+/-}0.04M{sun}. The white dwarf mass, 0.54{+/-}0.04M{sun}, comes from cooling models, an assumed Hyades age of 670Myr, and consistency with all previous and derived astrometric, photometric, and radial velocity results. Velocities from H{alpha} and HeI emission lines confirm the BC period derived from absorption lines, with similar (HeI) and higher (H{alpha}) velocity amplitudes. We ascribe the larger H{alpha} amplitude to emission from a region each component shadows from the other, depending on the line of sight.

- Abundances of evolved stars from IGRINS. I.
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/865/44
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have derived elemental abundances of three field red horizontal branch stars using high-resolution (R~45000), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N>~200) H- and K-band spectra obtained with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS). We have determined the abundances of 21 elements, including {alpha} (Mg, Si, Ca, S), odd-Z (Na, Al, P, K), Fe-group (Sc, Ti, Cr, Co, Ni), neutron-capture (Ce, Nd, Yb), CNO-group elements. S, P, and K are determined for the first time in these stars. H- and K-band spectra provide a substantial number of S I lines, which potentially can lead to a more robust exploration of the role of sulfur in the cosmochemical evolution of the Galaxy. We have also derived ^12^C/^13^C ratios from synthetic spectra of the first-overtone ^12^CO (2-0) and (3-1) and ^13^CO (2-0) lines near 23440{AA} and ^13^CO (3-1) lines at about 23730{AA}. Comparison of our results with the ones obtained from the optical region suggests that the IGRINS high-resolution H- and K-band spectra offer more internally self-consistent line abundances of the same species for several elements, especially the {alpha}-elements. This in turn provides more reliable abundances for the elements with analytical difficulties in the optical spectral range.

- ALMaQUEST. IV. ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching & star formation
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/903/145
- Date:
- 15 Mar 2022
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The ALMaQUEST (ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation) survey is a program with spatially resolved 12CO(1-0) measurements obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) for 46 galaxies selected from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) DR15 optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The aim of the ALMaQUEST survey is to investigate the dependence of star formation activity on the cold molecular gas content at kiloparsec scales in nearby galaxies. The sample consists of galaxies spanning a wide range in specific star formation rate (sSFR), including starburst (SB), main-sequence (MS), and green valley (GV) galaxies. In this paper, we present the sample selection and characteristics of the ALMA observations and showcase some of the key results enabled by the combination of spatially matched stellar populations and gas measurements. Considering the global (aperture-matched) stellar mass, molecular gas mass, and star formation rate of the sample, we find that the sSFR depends on both the star formation efficiency (SFE) and the molecular gas fraction (f_H_2__), although the correlation with the latter is slightly weaker. Furthermore, the dependence of sSFR on the molecular gas content (SFE or f_H_2__) is stronger than that on either the atomic gas fraction or the molecular-to-atomic gas fraction, albeit with the small Hi sample size. On kiloparsec scales, the variations in both SFE and f_H_2__ within individual galaxies can be as large as 1-2dex, thereby demonstrating that the availability of spatially resolved observations is essential to understand the details of both star formation and quenching processes.

- APOGEE2-N NIR spectra of B-type stars
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/894/5
- Date:
- 19 Jan 2022 00:59:33
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a semi-empirical spectral classification scheme for normal B-type stars using near-infrared (NIR) spectra (1.5-1.7{mu}m) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE2)-N data release 14 (DR14) database. The main motivation for working with B-type stars is their importance in the evolution of young stellar clusters; however, we also take advantage of having a numerous sample (316 stars) of B-type star candidates in APOGEE2-N, for which we also have optical (3600-9100{AA}) counterparts from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. By first obtaining an accurate spectral classification of the sources using the LAMOST DR3 spectra and the canonical spectral classification scheme, we found a linear relation between optical spectral types and the equivalent widths of the hydrogen lines of the Brackett series in the APOGEE2-N NIR spectra. This relation extends smoothly from a similar relation for O and early B stars found by Roman-Lopes+ (2018, J/ApJ/855/68). This way, we obtain a catalog of B-type sources with features in both the optical and NIR and a classification scheme refined down to one spectral subclass.

- Bright nearby elliptical gal. Xshooter spectra
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/621/A60
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- A new generation of spectral synthesis models has been developed in the recent years, but there is no matching -- in terms of quality and resolution -- set of template galaxy spectra for testing and refining the new models. Our main goal is to find and calibrate new near-infrared spectral indices along the Hubble sequence of galaxies which will be used to obtain additional constraints to the population analysis based on medium resolution integrated spectra of galaxies. Spectra of previously studied and well understood galaxies with relatively simple stellar populations (e.g., ellipticals or bulge dominated galaxies) are needed to provide a baseline data set for spectral synthesis models. X-Shooter spectra spanning the optical and infrared wavelength (350-2400nm) of bright nearby elliptical galaxies with resolving power R~4000-5400 were obtained. Heliocentric systemic velocity, velocity dispersion and Mg, Fe and H{beta} line-strength indices are presented. We present a library of very high quality spectra of galaxies covering a large range of age, metallicity and morphological type. Such as a dataset of spectra will be crucial to address important questions of the modern investigation concerning galaxy formation and evolution.

- CaII index of SMC red giant branch stars
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/136/1039
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present stellar metallicities derived from Ca II triplet spectroscopy in over 350 red giant branch stars in 13 fields distributed in different positions in the Small Magellanic Cloud, ranging from ~1{deg} to ~4{deg} from its center. In the innermost fields, the average metallicity is [Fe/H]~-1. This value decreases when we move away toward outermost regions. This is the first detection of a spectroscopic metallicity gradient in this galaxy. We show that the metallicity gradient is related to an age gradient, in the sense that more metal-rich stars, which are also younger, are concentrated in the central regions of the galaxy.

- Calcium triplet index in LMC stars
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/135/836
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Infrared CaII triplet (CaT) spectroscopy has been used to derive stellar metallicities for individual stars in four Large Magellanic Cloud fields situated at galactocentric distances of 3{deg}, 5{deg}, 6{deg}, and 8{deg} to the north of the bar. The combination of spectroscopy with deep CCD photometry has allowed us to break the RGB age-metallicity degeneracy and compute the ages for the objects observed spectroscopically. The obtained age-metallicity relationships (AMRs) for our four fields are statistically indistinguishable. We conclude that the lower mean metallicity in the outermost field is a consequence of it having a lower fraction of intermediate-age stars, which are more metal-rich than the older stars. The disk AMR is similar to that for clusters. However, the lack of objects with ages between 3 and 10Gyr is not observed in the field population. Finally, we used data from the literature to derive consistently the AMR of the bar. Simple chemical evolution models have been used to reproduce the observed AMRs with the purpose of investigating which mechanism has participated in the evolution of the disk and bar.

- CARMENES obs. of the binary system LB-1
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/900/42
- Date:
- 21 Mar 2022 09:26:37
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The mass, origin, and evolutionary stage of the binary system LB-1 have been intensely debated, following the claim that it hosts an ~70M_{sun}_ black hole, in stark contrast with the expectations for Galactic remnants. We conducted a high-resolution, phase-resolved spectroscopic study of its Paschen lines, using the Calar Alto 3.5m telescope. We find that Pa{beta} and Pa{gamma} (after subtraction of the stellar absorption component) are well fitted with a standard double-peaked disk profile. We measured the velocity shifts of the red and blue peaks at 28 orbital phases: the line center has an orbital motion in perfect antiphase with the secondary, and the radial velocity amplitude ranges from 8 to 13km/s, for different methods of profile modeling. We interpret this curve as proof that the disk traces the orbital motion of the primary, ruling out the circumbinary disk and the hierarchical triple scenarios. The phase-averaged peak-to-peak half-separation (a proxy for the projected rotational velocity of the outer part of the disk) is ~70km/s, larger than the orbital velocity of the secondary and inconsistent with a circumbinary disk. From those results, we infer a primary mass 4-8 times higher than the secondary mass. Moreover, we show that the intensity ratio of the blue and red peaks has a sinusoidal behavior in phase with the secondary, which we attribute to external irradiation of the outer part of the disk. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of competing scenarios proposed for LB-1. Further astrometric Gaia data will test between alternative solutions.
