- We present the deepest near-infrared (ZJKs) photometry yet obtained of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph), using Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) to survey 11 square degrees centred on its core. We list locations and ZJKs-band magnitudes for over 2.9 million sources in the field. We discuss the isolation of the Sgr dSph from the foreground and Galactic Bulge populations, identify the Sgr dSph's horizontal branch in the near-infrared for the first time and map the density of the galaxy's stars. We present isochrones for the Sgr dSph and Bulge populations. These are consistent with the previously reported properties of the Sgr dSph core: namely that it is dominated by a population between [Fe/H]~-1dex and solar, with a significant [{alpha}/Fe] versus [Fe/H] gradient. While strong contamination from the Galactic Bulge prevents accurate measurement of the (Galactic) north side of the Sgr dSph, the dwarf galaxy can be well approximated by a roughly ovaloid projection of characteristic size 4{deg}x2{deg}, beyond which the projected stellar density is less than half that of the region surrounding the core. The galaxy's major axis is perpendicular to the Galactic Plane, as in previous studies. We find slight evidence to confirm a metallicity gradient in the Sgr dSph and use isochrones to fit a distance of 24.3+/-2.3kpc. We were unable to fully constrain the metallicity distribution of the Sgr dSph due to the Bulge contamination and strong correlation of [{alpha}/Fe] with metallicity; however, we find that metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<~-1) make up <~29% of the Sgr dSph's upper red giant branch population. The Bulge population is best fitted by a younger population with [Fe/H] {approx} 0 and [{alpha}/Fe] {approx} 0 or slightly higher. We find no evidence for a split, peanut- or X-shaped Bulge population in this line of sight (l=5.6+/-~1{deg}, b=-14.1+/-~3{deg}).

- We have calibrated four major ground-based photometric systems with respect to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) absolute flux scale, which is defined by Vega and four fundamental DA white dwarfs. These photometric systems include the Johnson-Kron-Cousins UBVRI, the Stroemgren uvby filters, the Two Micron All Sky Survey JHKs, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey ugriz filters. Synthetic magnitudes are calculated from model white dwarf spectra folded through the published filter response functions; these magnitudes in turn are absolutely calibrated with respect to the HST flux scale. Effective zero-magnitude fluxes and zero-point offsets of each system are determined. In order to verify the external observational consistency, as well as to demonstrate the applicability of these definitions, the synthetic magnitudes are compared with the respective observed magnitudes of larger sets of DA white dwarfs that have well-determined effective temperatures and surface gravities and span a wide range in both of these parameters.

- We present results from Chandra ACIS-I and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array 6cm continuum observations of the IRAS 20126+4104 massive star-forming region. We detect 150 X-ray sources within the 17'x17' ACIS-I field, and a total of 13 radio sources within the 9.2' primary beam at 4.9GHz. Among these observations are the first 6cm detections of the central sources reported by Hofner et al. (2007A&A...465..197H), namely, I20N1, I20S, and I20var. A new variable radio source is also reported. Searching the 2MASS archive, we identified 88 near-infrared (NIR) counterparts to the X-ray sources. Only four of the X-ray sources had 6cm counterparts. Based on an NIR color-color analysis and on the Besancon simulation of Galactic stellar populations, we estimate that approximately 80 X-ray sources are associated with this massive star-forming region. We detect an increasing surface density of X-ray sources toward the massive protostar and infer the presence of a cluster of at least 43 young stellar objects within a distance of 1.2pc from the massive protostar.

- We present the first multi-color VRI CCD light curves of a short-period eclipsing binary star v441 Lac in this paper. We obtained our light curves on Oct. 4 and 8, 2013 at Xinglong station of National Astronomical Observatories, China. We updated the ephemeris of V441 Lac based on three new minima derived by our new observational data together with previously available light curve minima. By fitting the O-C (observed minus calculated) values of the minima, we found that the orbital period of V441 Lac exhibits an increasing trend of View the dP/dt=5.67(0.35)x10^-7^days/year, which might be explained by mass transfer from the secondary component to the primary one, or angular momentum exchange by magnetic activities. We also obtained the photometric orbital parameters with the Wilson & Devinney program. Our final result shows that the V441 Lac system is a semi-detached binary with the secondary component filling roche lobe.

- We present the optical and infrared identifications of the 266 radio sources detected at 20cm with the Very Large Array in the Chandra Deep Field-South. Using deep i-band Advanced Camera for Surveys, R-band Wide Field Imager, K-band SOFI NTT, K-band ISAAC VLT and Spitzer imaging data, we are able to find reliable counterparts for 254 (~95%) VLA sources. Twelve radio sources remain unidentified, and three of them are "empty fields". Using literature and our own data we are able to assign redshifts to 186 (~70%) radio sources: 108 are spectroscopic redshifts and 78 are reliable photometric redshifts. Based on the rest-frame colors and morphological distributions of the host galaxies, we find evidences for a change in the submillijansky radio source population: (1) above ~0.08mJy early-type galaxies are dominating and (2) at flux densities below ~0.08mJy, starburst galaxies become dominant.

- The young (~16 Myr) pre-main-sequence star in Sco-Cen 1SWASP J140747.93-394542.6, hereafter referred to as J1407, underwent a deep eclipse in 2007 April, bracketed by several shallower eclipses in the surrounding 54d. This has been interpreted as the first detection of an eclipsing ring system circling a substellar object (dubbed J1407b). We report on a search for this companion with Sparse Aperture Mask imaging and direct imaging with both the UT4 VLT and Keck telescopes. Radial velocity measurements of J1407 provide additional constraints on J1407b and on short period companions to the central star. Follow-up photometric monitoring using the Panchromatic Robotic Optical Monitoring and Polarimetry Telescopes (PROMPT)-4 and ROAD observatories during 2012-2014 has not yielded any additional eclipses. Large regions of mass-period space are ruled out for the companion. For circular orbits the companion period is constrained to the range 3.5-13.8 yr (a~2.2-5.6 au), and stellar masses (>80 M_Jup_) are ruled out at 3{sigma} significance over these periods. The complex ring system appears to occupy more than 0.15 of its Hill radius, much larger than its Roche radius and suggesting a ring structure in transition. Further, we demonstrate that the radial velocity of J1407 is consistent with membership in the Upper Cen-Lup subgroup of the Sco-Cen association, and constraints on the rotation period and projected rotational velocity of J1407 are consistent with a stellar inclination of i_*_~68{deg}+/-10{deg}.

- Our understanding of the brown dwarf population in star-forming regions is dependent on knowing distances and proper motions and therefore will be improved through the Gaia space mission. In this paper, we select new samples of very low-mass objects (VLMOs) in Upper Scorpius using UKIDSS colors and optimized proper motions calculated using Gaia DR1. The scatter in proper motions from VLMOs in Upper Scorpius is now (for the first time) dominated by the kinematic spread of the region itself, not by the positional uncertainties. With age and mass estimates updated using Gaia parallaxes for early-type stars in the same region, we determine masses for all VLMOs. Our final most complete sample includes 453 VLMOs of which ~125 are expected to be brown dwarfs. The cleanest sample is comprised of 131 VLMOs, with ~105 brown dwarfs. We also compile a joint sample from the literature that includes 415 VLMOs, out of which 152 are likely brown dwarfs. The disk fraction among low-mass brown dwarfs (M<0.05M_{sun}_) is substantially higher than in more massive objects, indicating that disks around low-mass brown dwarfs survive longer than in low-mass stars overall. The mass function for 0.01<M<0.1M_{sun}_ is consistent with the Kroupa Initial Mass Function. We investigate the possibility that some "proper motion outliers" have undergone a dynamical ejection early in their evolution. Our analysis shows that the color-magnitude cuts used when selecting samples introduce strong bias into the population statistics due to varying levels of contamination and completeness. - The VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS) is an ESO Large Programme that has obtained multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of over 800 massive stars in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Here we introduce our scientific motivations and give an overview of the survey targets, including optical and near-infrared photometry and comprehensive details of the data reduction. One of the principal objectives was to detect massive binary systems via variations in their radial velocities, thus shaping the multi-epoch observing strategy. Spectral classifications are given for the massive emission-line stars observed by the survey, including the discovery of a new Wolf-Rayet star (VFTS 682, classified as WN5h), 2' to the northeast of R136. To illustrate the diversity of objects encompassed by the survey, we investigate the spectral properties of sixteen targets identified by Gruendl & Chu (2009, Cat. J/ApJS/184/172) from Spitzer photometry as candidate young stellar objects or stars with notable mid-infrared excesses. Detailed spectral classification and quantitative analysis of the O- and B-type stars in the VFTS sample, paying particular attention to the effects of rotational mixing and binarity, will be presented in a series of future articles to address fundamental questions in both stellar and cluster evolution.

- We present the results of high angular resolution adaptive optics (AO) near-infrared (JHKs) observations of the deeply embedded massive cluster RCW 38 using NACO on the Very Large Telescope. Narrowband AO observations centered at wavelengths of 1.28um, 2.12um, and 2.17um were also obtained. The area covered by these observations is about 0.5pc^2^, centered on the O-star RCW 38 IRS 2. We use the JHKs colors to identify young stars with infrared (IR) excess in this region.

- We present deep 3.8{mu}m L' imaging observations of the Trapezium cluster in Orion obtained with the ESO VLT. We use these observations to (1) search for infrared excess emission and evidence for protoplanetary disks associated with the faint, substellar population of this young cluster and (2) investigate the nature and extent of a recently discovered population of deeply embedded sources located in dense molecular gas behind the cluster. We detected 38 L' sources with substellar luminosities. In addition, we detected 24 L' sources that were spectroscopically classified as substellar objects in previous studies. Examining the infrared colors of all these sources, we determine an infrared excess fraction of 50%{+/-}20% from the J, H, K_s_ and L' colors for both the luminosity-selected and spectroscopically selected substellar samples.
