- We present radial velocity measurements of a sample of L0-L8 dwarfs observed with VLT/UVES and Keck/HIRES. We combine these measurements with distance and proper motion from the literature to determine space motions for 43 of our targets. We identify nine candidate members of young moving groups, which have ages of 50-600Myr according to their space motion.

- We have imaged five 7'x7' fields in M31 spanning galactocentric radii from 4 to 32 kpc along the SW semi-major axis. The fields were observed through two broadband (V and I) and two narrowband (CN and TiO) ({DELTA}{nu}=+2.8100A and ({DELTA}{nu}=-1.7800A, respectively) filters. The broadband data were used to construct I, (V-I) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and, in some of our fields, we found significant numbers of stars in the Cepheid instability strip. A distance modulus for the Cepheids in the middle field was found that agreed well with other values in the literature. The width of the giant branch (GB) in the I, (V-I) CMD of all five fields was investigated, and we show that in four of the fields a likely explanation for the GB width is a combination of both metallicity and mass variations. Using the broadband data, the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) luminosity functions (LFs) were measured in the five fields, and we show that differences exist between these LFs. We speculate on how the different star-forming histories in the fields may lead to the observed AGB LFs and GB widths. Using the narrowband data along with the broadband data we separated the AGB stars into carbon-rich (C) and oxygen-rich (M) types. The carbon stars LFs were used to obtain an estimate for the distance modulus of M31 which agrees with the value derived from Cepheids. The ratio of C- to M-stars (C/M) is believed to be an indicator of gaseous chemical abundance at the time of formation of these stars. We show that the C/M ratio increases smoothly with galactocentric distance, suggesting an inverse correlation with metallicity. This is the first demonstration of this effect within a single extragalactic system. We find that differences in the width of the GB and the AGB LFs do not significantly affect the C/M ratio. We consider the effect of the increasing C/M ratio on the ISM in M31, and cite evidence in favor of a model where the grain composition in M31 is a function of galactocentric distance.

- Our photometric survey of Local Group galaxies, using a four filter technique based on the method of Wing (1971, Proc. Conf. Late-Type Stars, ed. G.W. Lockwood and H.M. Dyck, KPNO Contribution 554, 145) allows the identification and subsequent characterization of their late-type stellar content. Two narrow band filters centred on molecular bands of TiO and CN allow us to distinguish between AGB stars of different chemistries [M-type (O-rich) and C-type (C-rich)]. The faint dwarf spheroidal galaxy And II, a member of the M 31 subgroup, was surveyed. From photometry in V and i as well as in the narrow band filters TiO and CN we were able to identify 7 new AGB carbon stars, to derive their mean absolute <Mi> and bolometric magnitude Mbol, their luminosity function, and their spatial distribution. We are unable to establish the true C/M ratio because the few M stars of And II are overwhelmed by foreground Galactic M st

- Red supergiant stars represent one of the latest stages of the evolution of massive stars. Their photospheric convection may play an important role in the launching mechanism of their mass loss. Yet, its characteristics and dynamics are poorly constrained. By observing red supergiant stars with near infrared interferometry at different epochs, we expect to unveil the evolution of bright convective features on their stellar surface. We observed the M2Iab-Ib red supergiant star CE Tau with the VLTI/PIONIER instrument in the H band at two different epochs separated by one month. We derive the angular diameter of the star, basic stellar parameters and reconstruct two reliable images of its H band photosphere. The contrast of the convective pattern of the reconstructed images is 5+/-1% and 6+/-1 % for our two epochs of observation. The stellar photosphere shows few changes between the two epochs. The contrast of the convective pattern is below the average contrast variations obtained on 30 randomly chosen snapshots of the best matching 3D radiative hydrodynamics simulation: 23+/-1% for the original simulation images, and 16+/-1% for the maps degraded to the reconstruction resolution. We offer two hypotheses to explain this observation: CE Tau may be experiencing a quiet convective activity episode or it could be a consequence of its warmer effective temperature (hence its smaller radius) compared to the simulation.

- We present Very Large Telescope/Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared H- and K-band spectra of potential central stars within the inner 8"-by-8" regions of 55 MIPSGAL "bubbles" (MBs), sub-arcminute circumstellar shells discovered in the mid-IR survey of the Galactic plane with Spitzer/MIPS. At magnitudes brighter than 15, we detect a total of 230 stars in the K band and 179 stars in the H band. We spectrally identify 145 stars in all but three MBs, with average magnitudes of 13.8 and 12.7 respectively, using spectral libraries and previous studies of near-IR stellar spectra. We also use tabulated intrinsic stellar magnitudes and colors to derive distances and extinction values, and to better constrain the classifications of the stars. We reliably identify the central sources for 21 of the 55 MBs, which we classify as follows: one Wolf-Rayet, three luminous blue variable candidates, four early-type (O to F), and 15 late-type (G to M) stars. The 21 central sources are, on average, one magnitude fainter than these in the most recent study of MBs, and we notice a significant drop in the fraction of massive star candidates. For the 34 remaining MBs in our sample, we are unable to identify the central sources due to confusion, low spectroscopic signal-to-noise ratio, and/or lack of detections in the images near the centers of the bubbles. We discuss how our findings compare with previous studies and support the trend, for the most part, between the shells' morphologies in the mid-IR and central sources spectral types.

- Variability is a key property of stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Selection criteria are derived based on colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams from the combination of VISTA Magellanic Cloud (VMC) survey, Spitzer IRAC, and AllWISE data. After eliminating LPVs with known periods shorter than 450 days, a sample of 1299 candidate obscured AGB stars is selected. K-band LCs are constructed combining the epoch photometry available in the VMC survey with literature data, analysed for variability and fitted with a single period sine curve to derive mean magnitudes, amplitudes and periods. A subset of 254 stars are either new variables, or known variables where the period we find is better determined than the literature value, or longer than 1000 days. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these stars are fitted to a large number of templates. For this purpose the SEDs and Spitzer IRS spectra of some non-AGB stars (Be stars, Hii regions and young stellar objects [YSOs]) are also fitted to have templates of the most likely contaminants in the sample. A sample of 217 likely LPVs is found. Thirty-four stars have periods longer than 1000 days although some of them have alternative shorter periods.

- V838 Mon erupted at the beginning of 2002. In the course of the outburst the object evolved to low effective temperatures and declined as a very late M-type supergiant. Among various scenarios proposed to explain the nature of the outburst, the most promising is a stellar merger event. We aim at studying the structure and evolution of the object in the decline from the 2002 eruption. We obtained spectroscopic observations of V838 Mon in January-March 2009 with UVES/VLT. The results are analysed and compared with similar observations obtained in October 2005 with HIRES/Keck. The most striking difference between 2009 and 2005 is a complete absence of the B3 V component and of the [FeII] emission lines in 2009. The present spectrum displays only the spectrum of the 2002 eruption remnant. It resembles that of an ~M6 giant, although the molecular bands in V838 Mon are deeper than those in standard stellar spectra of a similar spectral class. Several atomic lines, which displayed P-Cyg profiles in 2005, are now dominated by pure absorptions. Some of these lines, however, show a narrow emission component, which, as we argue, measures the radial velocity of V838 Mon. The resulting heliocentric velocity is 71km/s, which very well agrees with the velocity obtained from SiO maser observations. The atomic lines and the molecular bands show very complex kinematics. In some atomic lines and high-excitation molecular bands we observe matter infalling in the object atmosphere. The infall components were already observed in 2005, but were less pronounced and present in fewer lines than in 2009. We argue that the most negative radial velocity components seen in the resonance atomic lines and in the low-excitation molecular bands were formed in the ejecta of the 2002 eruption. The B3V companion most probably became engulfed in an opaque dusty matter of the 2002 V838 Mon ejecta.

- The accretion history of low-mass young stars is not smooth but shows spikes of accretion that can last from months and years to decades and centuries. Observations of young stars in outbursts can help us understand the temporal evolution of accreting stars and the interplay between the accretion disk and the stellar magnetosphere. The young late-type star V1118 Orionis was in outburst from 2005 to 2006. We followed the outburst with optical and near-infrared photometry. The X-ray emission was further probed with observations taken with XMM-Newton and Chandra during and after the outburst. In addition, we obtained mid-infrared photometry and spectroscopy with Spitzer at the peak of the outburst and in the post-outburst phase. The spectral energy distribution of V1118 Ori varied significantly over the course of the outburst. The optical flux showed the largest variations, most likely caused by enhanced emission by a hot spot. The hot spot dominated the optical and near-infrared emission at the peak of the outburst, while the disk emission dominated in the mid-infrared. The emission silicate feature in V1118 Ori is flat and does not vary in shape, but was slightly brighter at the peak of the outburst compared to the post-outburst spectrum. The X-ray flux correlated with the optical and infrared fluxes, indicating that accretion affected the magnetically active corona and the stellar magnetosphere. The thermal structure of the corona was variable with some indication of a cooling of the coronal temperature in the early phase of the outburst with a gradual return to normal values. Color-color diagrams in the optical and infrared showed variations during the outburst, with no obvious signature of reddening caused by circumstellar matter. Using Monte-Carlo realizations of star+disk+hotspot models to fit the spectral energy distributions in "quiescence" and at the peak of the outburst, we determined that the mass accretion rate varied from about 2.5x10^-7^M_{sun}_/yr to 1.0x10^-6^M_{sun}_/yr; in addition, the fractional area of the hotspot increased significantly. The multi-wavelength study of the V1118 Ori outburst helped us to understand the variations in spectral energy distributions and demonstrated the interplay between the disk and the stellar magnetosphere in a young, strongly accreting star.

- Precise rotational velocities vsini are presented for a large sample of 100 metal-poor stars, most of them evolving off the main-sequence. The survey was carried out with the FEROS and CORALIE spectrometers. For the vsini measurements, obtained from spectral synthesis, we estimate an uncertainty of about 2.0km/s. For the large majority of the stars composing the present sample rotational velocities have been measured for the first time.
