- We built a catalog of 122 FR II radio galaxies, called FRIICAT, selected from a published sample obtained by combining observations from the NVSS, FIRST, and SDSS surveys. The catalog includes sources with redshift <=0.15, an edge-brightened radio morphology, and those with at least one of the emission peaks located at radius r larger than 30 kpc from the center of the host. The radio luminosity at 1.4GHz of the FRIICAT sources covers the range L1.4~10^39.5^-10^42.5^erg/s. The FRIICAT catalog has 90% of low and 10% of high excitation galaxies (LEGs and HEGs), respectively. The properties of these two classes are significantly different. The FRIICAT LEGs are mostly luminous (-20>~Mr>~-24), red early-type galaxies with black hole masses in the range 10^8^<~M_BH_<~10^9^M_{sun}_; they are essentially indistinguishable from the FR Is belonging to the FRICAT. The HEG FR IIs are associated with optically bluer and mid-IR redder hosts than the LEG FR IIs and to galaxies and black holes that are smaller, on average, by a factor ~2. FR IIs have a factor ~3higher average radio luminosity than FR Is. Nonetheless, most (~90%) of the selected FR IIs have a radio power that is lower, by as much as a factor of ~100, than the transition value between FR Is and FR IIs found in the 3C sample. The correspondence between the morphological classification of FR I and FR II and the separation in radio power disappears when including sources selected at low radio flux thresholds, which is in line with previous results. In conclusion, a radio source produced by a low power jet can be edge brightened or edge darkened, and the outcome is not related to differences in the optical properties of the host galaxy.

- We present a sample of 120 dust-reddened quasars identified by matching radio sources detected at 1.4GHz in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters survey (FIRST) with the near-infrared Two Micron All Sky Survey catalog (2MASS) and color-selecting red sources. Optical and/or near-infrared spectroscopy provide broad wavelength sampling of their spectral energy distributions that we use to determine their reddening, characterized by E(B-V). We demonstrate that the reddening in these quasars is best described by Small-Magellanic-Cloud-like dust. This sample spans a wide range in redshift and reddening (0.1<~z<~3, 0.1<~E(B-V)<~1.5), which we use to investigate the possible correlation of luminosity with reddening. At every redshift, dust-reddened quasars are intrinsically the most luminous quasars. We interpret this result in the context of merger-driven quasar/galaxy co-evolution where these reddened quasars are revealing an emergent phase during which the heavily obscured quasar is shedding its cocoon of dust prior to becoming a "normal" blue quasar. When correcting for extinction, we find that, depending on how the parent population is defined, these red quasars make up <~15%-20% of the luminous quasar population. We estimate, based on the fraction of objects in this phase, that its duration is 15%-20% as long as the unobscured, blue quasar phase.

- We have constructed a sample of bright near-infrared sources that are detected at radio wavelengths but undetected on the first-generation Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSSI) plates in order to search for a population of dust-obscured quasars. Optical and infrared spectroscopic follow-up of the sample has led to the discovery of 17 heavily reddened quasars (B-K>6.5), 14 of which are reported here for the first time. This has allowed us to define a region in the R-K, J-K color plane in which 50% of the radio-selected objects are highly reddened quasars. We compare the surface density of this previously overlooked population to that of ultraviolet-excess radio-selected quasars, finding that they make up ~20% of the total quasar population for K<~15.5.

- We present the first release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), which is a large, well-calibrated, high-quality empirical library covering the wavelength range 3622-10354{AA} at a resolving power of R~1800. The spectra were obtained using the same instrument as used by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) project, by piggybacking on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV)/Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment 2-N (APOGEE-2N) observations. Compared to previous empirical libraries, the MaStar library will have a higher number of stars and a more comprehensive stellar-parameter coverage, especially of cool dwarfs, low-metallicity stars, and stars with different [{alpha}/Fe], achieved by a sophisticated target-selection strategy that takes advantage of stellar-parameter catalogs from the literature. This empirical library will provide a new basis for stellar-population synthesis and is particularly well suited for stellar-population analysis of MaNGA galaxies. The first version of the library contains 8646 high-quality per-visit spectra for 3321 unique stars. Compared to photometry, the relative flux calibration of the library is accurate to 3.9% in g-r, 2.7% in r-i, and 2.2% in i-z. The data are released as part of SDSS Data Release 15. We expect the final release of the library to contain more than 10000 stars.

- The EXtreme-PREcision Spectrograph (EXPRES) is an environmentally stabilized, fiber-fed, R=137500, optical spectrograph. It was recently commissioned at the 4.3m Lowell Discovery Telescope near Flagstaff, Arizona. The spectrograph was designed with a target radial-velocity (RV) precision of 30cm/s. In addition to instrumental innovations, the EXPRES pipeline, presented here, is the first on-sky, optical, fiber-fed spectrograph to employ many novel techniques-including an "extended flat" fiber used for wavelength-dependent quantum efficiency characterization of the CCD, a flat-relative optimal extraction algorithm, chromatic barycentric corrections, chromatic calibration offsets, and an ultra-precise laser frequency comb for wavelength calibration. We describe the reduction, calibration, and RV analysis pipeline used for EXPRES and present an example of our current sub-meter-per-second RV measurement precision, which reaches a formal, single-measurement error of 0.3m/s for an observation with a per-pixel signal-to-noise ratio of 250. These velocities yield an orbital solution on the known exoplanet host 51Peg that matches literature values with a residual rms of 0.895m/s.

- A small number of double-lobed radio galaxies (17 from our own census of the literature) show an additional pair of low surface brightness "wings," thus forming an overall X-shaped appearance. Using the VLA FIRST survey database, we are compiling a large sample of winged and X-shaped radio sources for such studies. As a first step toward this goal, an initial sample of 100 new candidate objects of this type are presented in this paper.

- Magnetic, chemically peculiar stars are known for exhibiting surface abundance inhomogeneities (chemical spots) that lead to photometric and spectroscopic variability with the rotation period. It is commonly assumed that the surface structures are causally connected with the global magnetic field that dominates the photospheric and subphotospheric layers of these stars. As a rule, the observed magnetic fields show a simple dipole-like geometry, with the magnetic axis being noncollinear to the rotational one. The present study aims at detecting underlying patterns in the distribution of photometric spots in a sample of 650 magnetic, chemically peculiar stars and examines their link to the magnetic field topology. Photometric time-series observations from the ASAS-3 archive were employed to inspect the light-curve morphology of our sample stars and divide them into representative classes described using a principal component analysis. Theoretical light curves were derived from numerous simulations assuming different spot parameters and following the symmetry of a simple dipole magnetic field. These were subsequently compared with the observed light curves. The results from our simulations are in contradiction with the observations and predict a much higher percentage of double-wave light curves than is actually observed. We thereby conclude that the distribution of the chemical spots does not follow the magnetic field topology, which indicates that the role of the magnetic field in the creation and maintenance of the surface structures may be more subsidiary than what is predicted by theoretical studies.

- We fit the colour-magnitude diagrams of stars between the zero-age main-sequence and terminal-age main sequence in young clusters and associations. The ages we derive are a factor of 1.5-2 longer than the commonly used ages for these regions, which are derived from the positions of pre-main-sequence stars in colour-magnitude diagrams. From an examination of the uncertainties in the main-sequence and pre-main-sequence models, we conclude that the longer age scale is probably the correct one, which implies that we must revise upwards the commonly used ages for young clusters and associations. Such a revision would explain the discrepancy between the observational lifetimes of protoplanetary discs and theoretical calculations of the time to form planets. It would also explain the absence of clusters with ages between 5 and 30Myr.

- In this paper, we study the nuclear obscuration of galaxies hosting low ionization narrow emission regions (LINERs) based on their X-ray and optical emission. They show column densities at soft energies (0.5-2keV) mostly related to the diffuse emission around the active galactic nucleus (AGN), showing a correlation with the optical extinction. Column densities at hard energies (2-10keV) seem to be much higher than what would be expected from the optical extinction. They might be associated with the inner regions of the AGN, buried at optical wavelengths.

- We report the discovery by the HATSouth project of five new transiting hot Jupiters (HATS-54b through HATS-58Ab). HATS-54b, HATS-55b, and HATS-58Ab are prototypical short-period (P=2.5-4.2 days, R_p_~1.1-1.2 R_J_) hot Jupiters that span effective temperatures from 1350 to 1750 K, putting them in the proposed region of maximum radius inflation efficiency. The HATS-58 system is composed of two stars, HATS-58A and HATS-58B, which are detected thanks to Gaia DR2 data and which we account for in the joint modeling of the available data-with this, we are led to conclude that the hot Jupiter orbits the brighter HATS-58A star. HATS-57b is a short-period (2.35 day), massive (3.15 M_J_), 1.14 R_J_, dense (2.65+/-0.21 g/cm^3^) hot Jupiter orbiting a very active star (2% peak-to-peak flux variability). Finally, HATS-56b is a short-period (4.32 day), highly inflated hot Jupiter (1.7 R_J_, 0.6 M_J_), which is an excellent target for future atmospheric follow-up, especially considering the relatively bright nature (V=11.6) of its F dwarf host star. This latter exoplanet has another very interesting feature: the radial velocities show a significant quadratic trend. If we interpret this quadratic trend as arising from the pull of an additional planet in the system, we obtain a period of P_c_=815_-143_^+253^ days for the possible planet HATS-56c, and a minimum mass of M_c_sini_c_=5.11+/-0.94 M_J_. The candidate planet HATS-56c would have a zero-albedo equilibrium temperature of T_eq_=332+/-50 K, and thus would be orbiting close to the habitable zone of HATS-56. Further radial-velocity follow-up, especially over the next two years, is needed to confirm the nature of HATS-56c.
