- This paper examines, compares and plots optical, near- and mid-infrared (MIR) photometric data for 605 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). With the aid of multiwavelength surveys such as the Spitzer legacy programme Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution, the Two Micron All Sky Survey and the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Survey, plots have been constructed to expose the relative contributions from molecular hydrogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, forbidden emission lines, warm dust continuum and stellar emission at various bands. Besides identifying trends, these plots have helped to reveal PN mimics including six previously known PNe in the outer LMC which are re-classified as other object types. Together with continuing follow-up optical observations, the data have enabled a substantial reduction in the number of PNe previously tagged as 'likely' and 'possible'. The total number of LMC PNe is adjusted to 715 but with a greater degree of confidence in regard to classification. In each colour-colour plot, the more highly evolved LMC PNe are highlighted for comparison with younger, brighter PNe. The faintest and most evolved PNe typically cluster in areas of colour-colour space occupied by ordinary stars. Possible reasons for the wide disparity in infrared colour-colour ratios, such as evolution and dust composition, are presented for evaluation. A correlation is found between the optical luminosity of PNe, emission-line ratios and the MIR dust luminosity at various bands. Luminosity functions using the four Infrared Array Camera and Multiband Imaging Photometer of Spitzer (MIPS) [24] bands are directly compared, revealing an increasing accumulation of PNe within the brightest two magnitudes at longer wavelengths. A correlation is also found between the MIPS [24] band and the [OIII] 5007 and H{beta} fluxes.

- Our previous identification and spectroscopic confirmation of 431 faint, new planetary nebulae (PNe) in the central 25deg^2^ region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) permit us to now examine the shape of the LMC planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) through an unprecedented 10mag range. The majority of our newly discovered and previously known PNe were observed using the 2dF, multi-object fibre spectroscopy system on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope and the FLAMES multi-object spectrograph on the 8-m Very Large Telescope. We present reliable [OIII] 5007{AA} and H{beta} flux estimates based on calibrations to well-established PN fluxes from previous surveys and spectroscopic standard stars.

- We have carried out a search for optically visible post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post- AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). First, we selected candidates with a mid-IR excess and then obtained their optical spectra. We disentangled contaminants with unique spectra such as M-stars, C-stars, planetary nebulae, quasi-stellar objects and background galaxies. Subsequently, we performed a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the remaining candidates to estimate their stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity (logg), metallicity ([Fe/H]), reddening and their luminosities. This resulted in a sample of 35 likely post-AGB candidates with late-G to late-A spectral types, low logg, and [Fe/H]<-0.5. Furthermore, our study con- firmed the existence of the dusty post-Red Giant Branch (post-RGB) stars, discovered previously in our SMC survey, by revealing 119 such objects in the LMC. These objects have mid-IR excesses and stellar parameters (Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) similar to those of post-AGB stars except that their luminosities (<2500L_{sun}_), and hence masses and radii, are lower. These post-RGB stars are likely to be products of binary interaction on the RGB. The post-AGB and post-RGB objects show SED properties similar to the Galactic post-AGB stars, where some have a surrounding circumstellar shell, while some others have a surrounding stable disc similar to the Galactic post-AGB binaries. This study also resulted in a new sample of 162 young stellar objects, identified based on a robust logg criterion. Other interesting outcomes include objects with an UV continuum and an emission line spectrum; luminous supergiants; hot main-sequence stars; and 15 B[e] star candidates, 12 of which are newly discovered in this study.

- We present new light curves covering 14-19years of observations of four bright proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs), all oxygen-rich and of F spectral type. They each display cyclical light curves with significant variations in amplitude. All four were previously known to vary in light. Our data were combined with published data and searched for periodicity. The results are as follows: IRAS 19475+3119 (HD331319; 41.0days), 17436+5003 (HD161796; 45.2days), 19386+0155 (101.8days), and 18095+2704 (113.3days). The two longer periods are in agreement with previous studies while the two shorter periods each reveal for the first time a dominant period over these long observing intervals. Multiple periods were also found for each object. The secondary periods were all close to the dominant periods, with P_2_/P_1_ ranging from 0.86 to 1.06. The variations in color reveal maximum variations in T_eff_of 400-770K. These variations are due to pulsations in these post-asymptotic giant branch objects. Maximum seasonal light variations are all less than 0.23mag (V), consistent for their temperatures and periods with the results of Hrivnak et al. for 12 C-rich PPNs. For all of these PPNs, there is an inverse relationship between period and temperature; however, there is a suggestion that the period-temperature relationship may be somewhat steeper for the O-rich than for the C-rich PPNs.

- Whether planetary nebulae (PNe) are predominantly the product of binary stellar evolution as some population synthesis models (PSM) suggest remains an open question. Around 50 short-period binary central stars (P~1d) are known, but with only four with measured orbital periods over 10 d, our knowledge is severely incomplete. Here we report on the first discovery from a systematic Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) survey for long-period binary central stars. We find a 142d orbital period from radial velocities of the central star of NGC 1360, HIP 16566. NGC 1360 appears to be the product of common-envelope (CE) evolution, with nebula features similar to post-CE PNe, albeit with an orbital period considerably longer than expected to be typical of post-CE PSM. The most striking feature is a newly identified ring of candidate low-ionization structures. Previous spatiokinematic modelling of the nebula gives a nebula inclination of 30{deg}+/-10{deg}, and assuming the binary nucleus is coplanar with the nebula, multiwavelength observations best fit a more massive, evolved white dwarf (WD) companion. A WD companion in a 142d orbit is not the focus of many PSM, making NGC 1360 a valuable system with which to improve future PSM work. HIP 16566 is amongst many central stars in which large radial velocity variability was found by low-resolution surveys. The discovery of its binary nature may indicate long-period binaries may be more common than PSM models predict.

- We present 5-40um spectroscopy of 41 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds, observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show the presence of a combination of nebular emission lines and solid state features from dust, superimposed on the thermal IR continuum. By analyzing the 25 LMC and 16 SMC PNe in our sample we found that the IR spectra of 14 LMC and four SMC PNe are dominated by nebular emission lines, while the other spectra show solid state features.

- We present the second part of an optical spectroscopic study of planetary nebulae in the LMC and SMC. The first paper, Leisy & Dennefeld (1996, Cat. <J/A+AS/116/95>), discussed the CNO cycle for those objects where C abundances were available. In this paper we concentrate more on other elemental abundances (such as O, Ne, S, Ar) and their implications for the evolution of the progenitor stars. We use a much larger sample of 183 objects, of which 65 are our own observations, where the abundances have been re-derived in a homogeneous way. For 156 of them, the quality of data is considered to be satisfactory for further analysis.

- We present optical and ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Clouds (SMC). For the visible spectra with highest S/N, line intensities have been measured to a few tenths of a percent of H_{beta}_. UV spectra are used for the determination of carbon abundances. This paper discusses the CNO cycle and its implications. We show that the CN or ON cycles are more effective with lower initial metallicities and are always complete for typeI nebulae. The latter cannot easily be distinguished from non-type I PNe on the basis of N or He abundance alone, as continuity exists in all of the standard diagrams. From the study of the C abundances, we deduce that the 3rd dredge-up is occurring in all PNe: its efficiency too is higher with lower initial metallicities, offering an easy explanation for the higher number of carbon stars found in metal-deficient galaxies. It is shown that this dredged-up carbon is sometimes transformed into nitrogen by Hot-Bottom Burning, but in a few objects only and not even in all the typeI PNe, which therefore do not form a homogeneous class.

- The Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg H{alpha} Planetary Nebula Catalogue (MASH) contains 903 new true, likely and possible Galactic Planetary Nebulae (PNe) discovered from the AAO/UKST H{alpha} survey of the southern Galactic plane. The combination of depth, resolution, uniformity, and areal coverage of the H {alpha}survey has opened up an hitherto unexplored region of parameter space permitting the detection of this significant new PN sample. This catalogue includes also the spectra of the PNe as FITS files (in the "sp" subdirectory), and a gallery of images created as a combination of the H{alpha} and short red images of the survey. The second part, MASH-II (table mash2.dat) consists of over 300 true, likely and possible new Galactic PNe found after re-examination of the entire AAO/UKST H{alpha} survey of the Southern Galactic Plane in digital form. Over 240 of these new candidates were confirmed as bona fide PNe on the basis of spectroscopic observations. The spectra of this supplement will be available in the future.

- We present an updated and newly compiled radio-continuum data base for Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg H{alpha} (MASH) planetary nebulae (PNe) detected in the extant large-scale 'blind' radio-continuum surveys [NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey/Molonglo Galactic Plane Surveys (SUMSS/MGPS-2) and Parkes-MIT-NRAO (PMN)] and, for a small number of MASH PNe, observed and detected in targeted radio-continuum observations. We found radio counterparts for approximately 250 MASH PNe. In comparison with the percentage of previously known Galactic PNe detected in the NVSS and MGPS-2 radio-continuum surveys and according to their position on the flux density angular diameter and the radio brightness temperature evolutionary diagrams we conclude, unsurprisingly, that the MASH sample presents the radio-faint end of the known Galactic PNe population. Also, we present radio-continuum spectral properties of a small sub-sample of MASH PNe located in the strip between declinations -30{deg} and -40{deg}, that are detected in both the NVSS and MGPS-2 radio surveys.
