- We present a comprehensive database of kinematic, photometric, and positional information for 352 objects in the field of M87 (NGC 4486), the central giant elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster; the majority of the tracers are globular clusters associated with that galaxy. New kinematic information comes from multislit observations with the Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS) of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), an investigation that has added 96 new velocities to and confirmed many of the earlier values in a preexisting data set of 256 velocities published elsewhere. The photometry, consisting of magnitudes and colors in the Washington (T_1_, C-T_1_) system, is based on CCD observations made at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) and the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO).

- We have obtained 2640 CCD spectra with resolution ~4{AA} in the region 7250-9000{AA} for 976 stars lying near the red giant branches in color-magnitude diagrams of 52 Galactic globular clusters. Radial velocities of ~16km/s accuracy per star determined from the spectra are combined with other criteria to assess quantitative membership probabilities. Measurements of the equivalent widths of the infrared calcium triplet lines yield a relative metal-abundance ranking with a precision that compares favorably to other techniques. Regressions between our system and those of others are derived. Our reduction procedures are discussed in detail, and the resultant catalog of derived velocities and equivalent widths is presented. - A 10.24-day Neptune-mass planet was recently announced as orbiting the nearby M2 dwarf Gl 176, based on 28 radial velocities measured with the HRS spectrograph on the Hobby-Heberly Telescope. We obtained 57 radial velocities of Gl 176 with the ESO 3.6m telescope and the HARPS spectrograph, which is known for its sub-m/s stability. The median photon-noise standard error of our measurements is 1.1m/s, and the 4-year period over which they were obtained overlaps considerably with the epochs of the HET measurements. The HARPS measurements show no evidence of a signal at the period of the putative HET planet, suggesting that its detection was spurious. We do find, on the other hand, strong evidence of a lower mass 8.4M_Earth_ planet, in a quasi-circular orbit and at the different period of 8.78 days.

- Small planets around low-mass stars often show orbital periods in a range that corresponds to the temperate zones of their host stars which are therefore of prime interest for planet searches. Surface phenomena such as spots and faculae create periodic signals in radial velocities and in observational activity tracers in the same range, so they can mimic or hide true planetary signals. We aim to detect Doppler signals corresponding to planetary companions, determine their most probable orbital configurations, and understand the stellar activity and its impact on different datasets. We analyzed 22 years of data of the M1.5V-type star Gl 49 (BD+61 195) including HARPS-N and CARMENES spectrographs, complemented by APT2 and SNO photometry. Activity indices are calculated from the observed spectra, and all datasets are analyzed with periodograms and noise models. We investigated how the variation of stellar activity imprints on our datasets. We further tested the origin of the signals and investigate phase shifts between the different sets. To search for the best-fit model we maximize the likelihood function in a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach. As a result of this study, we are able to detect the super-Earth Gl 49b with a minimum mass of 5.6M_{earth}_. It orbits its host star with a period of 13.85d at a semi-major axis of 0.090au and we calculate an equilibrium temperature of 350K and a transit probability of 2.0%. The contribution from the spot-dominated host star to the different datasets is complex, and includes signals from the stellar rotation at 18.86d, evolutionary timescales of activity phenomena at 40-80d, and a long-term variation of at least four years.

- The HArps-n red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey is providing a major contribution to the widening of the current statistics of low-mass planets, through the in-depth analysis of precise radial velocity measurements in a narrow range of spectral sub-types. Using the HARPS-N spectrograph we reach the precision needed to detect small planets with a few earth masses. Our survey is mainly focused on the M-dwarf population of the northern hemisphere. As part of that programme, we obtained radial velocity measurements of Gl686, an M1 dwarf at d=8.2pc. These measurements show a dispersion much in excess of their internal errors. The analysis of data obtained within an intensive observing campaign, demonstrates that the excess dispersion is due to a coherent signal, with a period of 15.53d. Almost simultaneous photometric observations were carried out within the APACHE and EXORAP programmes to characterize the stellar activity and to distinguish periodic variations related to activity from signals due to the presence of planetary companions, complemented also with ASAS photometric data. We used a Bayesian framework to estimate the orbital parameters and the planet minimum mass, and to properly treat the activity noise. We took advantage of the available radial velocity measurements for this target from other observing campaigns. The analysis of the radial velocity composite time series from the HIRES, HARPS and HARPS-N spectrographs, consisting of 198 measurements taken over 20 years, enabled us to address the nature of periodic signals and also to characterize stellar physical parameters (mass, temperature and rotation). We report the discovery of a super-Earth orbiting at a distance of 0.092AU from the host star Gl686. Gl686 b has a minimum mass of 7.1+/-0.9M_{Earth} and an orbital period of 15.532+/-0.002d. The analysis of the activity indexes, correlated noise through a Gaussian process framework and photometry, provides an estimate of the stellar rotation period at 37d, and highlights the variability of the spot configuration during the long timespan covering 20yrs. The observed periodicities around 2000d likely point to the existence of an activity cycle.

- We derive the distance and structure of the Perseus molecular cloud by combining trigonometric parallaxes from Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations, taken as part of the GOBELINS survey and Gaia Data Release 2. Based on our VLBA astrometry, we obtain a distance of 321+/-10pc for IC 348. This is fully consistent with the mean distance of 320+/-26 measured by Gaia. The VLBA observations toward NGC 1333 are insufficient to claim a successful distance measurement to this cluster. Gaia parallaxes, on the other hand, yield a mean distance of 293+/-22pc. Hence, the distance along the line of sight between the eastern and western edges of the cloud is ~30pc, which is significantly smaller than previously inferred. We use Gaia proper motions and published radial velocities to derive the spatial velocities of a selected sample of stars. The average velocity vectors with respect to the LSR are (u,v,w)=(-6.1+/-1.6, 6.8+/-1.1, -0.9+/-1.2) and (-6.4+/-1.0, 2.1+/-1.4, -2.4+/-1.0)km/s for IC 348 and NGC 1333, respectively. Finally, our analysis of the kinematics of the stars has shown that there is no clear evidence of expansion, contraction, or rotational motions within the clusters.

- The mechanisms giving rise to diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters and, in particular, their connection with cluster mergers are still being debated. We explore the internal dynamics of Abell 2254, which has been shown to host a very clumpy and irregular radio halo. Our analysis is mainly based on redshift data for 128 galaxies acquired at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. We combined galaxy velocities and positions to select 110 cluster galaxies and analyze its internal dynamics. We also used new (g', r', i') photometric data acquired at the Isaac Newton Telescope, and (V, i') photometric data available in the Subaru Archive. X-ray data from the XMM-Newton Science Archive were analyzed to study the hot gas component.

- The catalog contains statistically homogeneous and physically well graunded groups of galaxies based on the CfA2 redshift survey (Cat. J/ApJS/121/287) in the area of space 1000km/s<=cz<=15000km/s, |bII|>=20{deg}. For identification of groups we used a modification of a friends of friends (FoF) method. Principles of friendship and definition of values of presented there free parameters described in Mahtessian (1988Afz....28..255M, 1997Ap.....40..285M). There are 1971 groups with 2 or more members, for a total of 6787 members (46.3%); 765 of the groups have 3 or more members with 4375 galaxies (28.1%). The others 8790 (56.4%) galaxies make a sample of "single" galaxies. The catalog includes group numbers, numbers of members, equatorial coordinates, Virgo-centric radial velocities, line-of-sight-velocity dispersions, integrated group luminosities, and relative quantity of false members.

- We present 12,155 new differential photometric observations in the V filter made with the Undergraduate Research Studies in Astronomy and NF\Observatory WebScopes, as well as 33 radial velocities from spectroscopic observations of the detached, 4.04 day double-lined eclipsing binary star GX Gem. Absolute dimensions of the components are determined from these new, and also from previously published, data with high precision (less than 0.7% in the masses and radii) for the purpose of testing various aspects of theoretical modeling. We obtain 1.488+/-0.011 solar masses and 2.327+/-0.012 solar radii for the primary, and 1.467+/-0.010 solar masses and 2.238+/-0.012 solar radii for the secondary. The effective temperatures and interstellar reddening of the stars are accurately determined from the spectra, uvby{beta}, and UBV photometry: 6195+/-100K for the primary, 6165+/-100K for the secondary, corresponding to spectral types of F7 and F7 V, and 0.068mag for the color excess E(b-y). Spectral line widths give rotational velocities that are synchronous with the mean orbital motion in a circular orbit.

- The distribution of exoplanets around low-mass stars is still not well understood. Such stars, however, present an excellent opportunity for reaching down to the rocky and habitable planet domains. The number of current detections used for statistical purposes remains relatively modest and different surveys, using both photometry and precise radial velocities, are searching for planets around M dwarfs. Our HARPS-N red dwarf exoplanet survey is aimed at the detection of new planets around a sample of 78 selected stars, together with the subsequent characterization of their activity properties. Here we investigate the survey performance and strategy. From 2700 observed spectra, we compare the radial velocity determinations of the HARPS-N DRS pipeline and the HARPS-TERRA code, calculate the mean activity jitter level, evaluate the planet detection expectations, and address the general question of how to define the strategy of spectroscopic surveys in order to be most efficient in the detection of planets. We find that the HARPS-TERRA radial velocities show less scatter and we calculate a mean activity jitter of 2.3m/s for our sample. For a general radial velocity survey with limited observing time, the number of observations per star is key for the detection efficiency. In the case of an early M-type target sample, we conclude that approximately 50 observations per star with exposure times of 900s and precisions of approximately 1m/s maximizes the number of planet detections.
