- Using archival data from the Hi Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), we have searched for 21cm line absorption in 204 nearby radio and star-forming galaxies with continuum flux densities greater than S_1.4_~250mJy within the redshift range 0<cz<12000km/s. By applying a detection method based on Bayesian model comparison, we successfully detect and model absorption against the radio-loud nuclei of four galaxies, of which the Seyfert 2 galaxy 2MASX J130804201-2422581 was previously unknown. All four detections were achieved against compact radio sources, which include three active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and a nuclear starburst, exhibiting high dust and molecular gas content. Our results are consistent with the detection rate achieved by the recent ALFALFA (Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array) Hi absorption pilot survey by Darling et al. and we predict that the full ALFALFA survey should yield more than three to four times as many detections as we have achieved here. Furthermore, we predict that future all-sky surveys on the Square Kilometre Array precursor telescopes will be able to detect such strong absorption systems associated with type 2 AGNs at much higher redshifts, providing potential targets for detection of H_2_O megamaser emission at cosmological redshifts.

- Cosmic Flows is an international multi-element project with the goal to map motions of galaxies in the local Universe. Kinematic information from observations in the radio HI line and photometry at optical or near-infrared bands are acquired to derive the large majority of distances that are obtained through the luminosity-linewidth or Tully-Fisher relation. This paper gathers additional observational radio data, frequently unpublished, retrieved from the archives of Green Bank, Parkes and Arecibo telescopes. Extracted HI profiles are consistently processed to produce linewidth measurements. Our current 'All-Digital HI Catalog' contains a total of 20343 HI spectra for 17738 galaxies with 14 802 galaxies with accurate linewidth measurement useful for Tully-Fisher galaxy distances. This addition of 4117 new measurements represents an augmentation of 34 percent compared to our last release.

- Edge-on galaxies can offer important insight into galaxy evolution because they are the only systems where the distribution of the different components can be studied both radially and vertically. The HEROES project was designed to investigate the interplay between the gas, dust, stars, and dark matter (DM) in a sample of 7 massive edge-on spiral galaxies. In this second HEROES paper, we present an analysis of the atomic gas content of 6 out of 7 galaxies in our sample. The remaining galaxy was recently analysed according to the same strategy. The primary aim of this work is to constrain the surface density distribution, the rotation curve, and the geometry of the gas disks in a homogeneous way. In addition we identify peculiar features and signs of recent interactions. We have constructed detailed tilted-ring models of the atomic gas disks based on new GMRT 21-cm observations of NGC 973 and UGC 4277 and re-reduced archival HI data of NGC 5907, NGC 5529 IC 2531, and NGC 4217. Potential degeneracies between different models were resolved by requiring good agreement with the data in various representations of the data cubes. From our modelling we find that all but one galaxy are warped along the major axis. In addition, we identify warps along the line of sight in three galaxies. A flaring gas layer is required to reproduce the data for only one galaxy, but (moderate) flares cannot be ruled out for the other galaxies either. A coplanar ring-like structure is detected outside the main disk of NGC 4217, which we suggest could be the remnant of a recent minor merger event. We also find evidence of a radial inflow of 15 +/-5km/s in the disk of NGC 5529, which might be related to the ongoing interaction with two nearby companions. For NGC 5907 the extended, asymmetric, and strongly warped outer regions of the HI disk also suggest a recent interaction. In contrast, the inner disks of these three galaxies (NGC 4217, NGC 5529, and NGC 5907) show regular behaviour and seem largely unaffected by the interactions. Our models further support earlier claims of prominent spiral arms in the disks of IC 2531 and NGC 5529. Finally, we detect a dwarf companion galaxy at a projected distance of 36 kpc from the centre of NGC 973.

- 392 spiral galaxies with type Sb or later have been detected in the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen with the Nancay radiotelescope, and among them 172 HI fluxes are obtained for the first time. The source of any possible bias has been carefully analyzed and only the Malmquist bias appears to be significant. In order to obviate this observational effect, the range of radial velocities has been properly truncated for all statistical studies. A mean value of each global parameter has been determined for each morphological type and compared to previous results.

- We report 21-cm H I line observations of 161 galaxies located behind the Milky Way, in the Puppis region. The observations have been carried out with the Nancay radio telescope, resulting in 101 detections. Most of the galaxies observed appear in the ESO catalogue, and present apparent diameters larger than 1.6arcmin. We show that the detection rate is strongly related to the apparent diameter; it is as high as 76 per cent for diameters larger than 1.6arcmin. Half of the non-detections result, in fact, from an insufficient velocity coverage. Global parameters of the detected galaxies are computed, after a careful discussion of the correction for Galactic absorption.

- We have carried out an extremely long integration time (9000s/beam) 21-cm blind survey of 60deg^2^ in Centaurus using the Parkes multibeam system. We find that the noise continues to fall as sqrt(t_obs_) throughout, enabling us to reach an H I column-density limit of 4.2x10^18^cm^-2^ for galaxies with a velocity width of 200km/s in the central 32deg^2^ region, making this the deepest survey to date in terms of column density sensitivity. The H I data are complemented by very deep optical observations from digital stacking of multi-exposure UK Schmidt Telescope R-band films, which reach an isophotal level of 26.5Rmag/arcsec^2^ (27.5Bmag/arcsec^2^). 173 H I sources have been found, 96 of which have been uniquely identified with optical counterparts in the overlap area.

- Here we present a sample of sources with convex radio spectra peaking at frequencies above a few GHz. We call these radio sources High Frequency Peakers (HFPs). This sample extends to higher turnover frequencies than the samples of Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources. HFPs are rare due to the strong bias against them caused by their turnover occurring at frequencies about one order of magnitude higher than in CSS-GPS samples. he sample has been selected by a comparison between the Green Bank survey (87GB) at 4.9 GHz and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) at 1.4 GHz. Then the candidates have been observed with the VLA at 1.365, 1.665, 4.535, 4.985, 8.085, 8.485, 14.96 and 22.46 GHz in order to derive a simultaneous radio spectrum, and remove variable sources from the sample. The final list of genuine HFP sources consists of 55 objects with flux density exceeding 300 mJy at 4.9 GHz at the time of the 87GB observation. Optical identifications are available for 29 of them; 24 are high redshift quasars, 3 are galaxies (one of them has indeed broad lines in the optical spectrum) and 2 are BL Lac objects. The remaining sources are mostly empty fields (17) on the digitised POSS or have uncertain classification (9).

- We present a sample of sources with convex radio spectra peaking at frequencies above a few GHz, known as "High Frequency Peakers" (HFPs). A "bright" sample with a flux density limit of 300mJy at 5GHz has been presented by Dallacasa et al. (2000, Cat. J/A+A/363/887). Here we present the "faint" sample with flux density between 50 and 300mJy at 5GHz, restricted to the area around the North Galactic Cap, where the FIRST catalogue is available. The candidates have been observed with the VLA at several frequencies ranging from 1.4 to 22GHz, in order to derive a simultaneous radio spectrum. The final list of confirmed HFP sources consists of 61 objects.

- We report the discovery of a high-redshift, massive molecular outflow in the starburst galaxy SPT 0346-52 (z=5.656) via the detected absorption of high-excitation water transitions (H_2_O 4_2,3_-4_1,4_ and H_2_O 3_3,0_-3_2,1_) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The host galaxy is one of the most powerful starburst galaxies at high redshift (star formation rate; SFR~3600M_{sun}_/yr), with an extremely compact (~320pc) star formation region and a SFR surface density ({SIGMA}_SFR_~5500M_{sun}_/yr/kpc^2^) five times higher than "maximum" (i.e. Eddington-limited) starbursts, implying a highly transient phase. The estimated outflow rate is ~500M_{sun}_/yr, which is much lower than the SFR, implying that in this extreme starburst the outflow capabilities saturate and the outflow is no longer capable of regulating star formation, resulting in a runaway process in which star formation will use up all available gas in less than 30Myr. Finally, while previous kinematic investigations of this source revealed possible evidence for an ongoing major merger, the coincidence of the hyper-compact starburst and high-excitation water absorption indicates that this is a single starburst galaxy surrounded by a disc.
