- The mergers of galaxy clusters are the most energetic events in the universe after the Big Bang. An ever increasing fraction of local clusters exhibit signs of recent or past mergers. Our goal is to probe how these mergers affect the evolution and content of their member galaxies. We specifically aim to answer the following questions: Is the quenching of star formation in merging clusters enhanced when compared with relaxed clusters? Is the quenching accompanied by a (short lived) burst of star formation? We obtained optical spectroscopy of $>400$ galaxies in the field of the merging cluster Abell 520. We combine these observations with archival data to get a comprehensive picture of the state of star formation in the members of this merging cluster. Finally, we compare these observations with a control sample of 10 non-merging clusters at the same redshift from The Arizona Cluster Redshift Survey (ACReS). We split the member galaxies in passive, star forming or recently quenched depending on their spectra. The core of the merger shows a decreased fraction of star-forming galaxies compared to clusters in the non-merging sample. This region, dominated by passive galaxies, is extended along the axis of the merger. We find evidence of rapid quenching of the galaxies during the core passage with no signs of a star burst on the time scales of the merger. Additionally, we report the tentative discovery of an infalling group along the main filament feeding the merger, currently at ~2.5Mpc from the merger centre. This group contains a high fraction of star forming galaxies as well as ~2/3 of all the recently quenched galaxies in our survey.

- Using the SDSS spectra of quasars included in the DR7Q or DR12Q catalogs, we search for MgII{lambda}{lambda}2796,2803 narrow absorption doublets in the spectra data around MgII{lambda}2798 emission lines. We obtain 17316 MgII doublets, within the redshift range of 0.3299<=z_abs_<=2.5663. We find that a velocity offset of {upsilon}_r_<6000km/s is a safe boundary to constrain the vast majority of associated Mg ii systems, although we find some doublets at {upsilon}_r_>6000km/s. If associated Mg ii absorbers are defined by {upsilon}_r_<6000km/s, ~33.3% of the absorbers are supposed to be contaminants of intervening systems. Removing the 33.3% contaminants, ~4.5% of the quasars present at least one associated MgII system with W_r_^{lambda}2796^>=0.2{AA}. The fraction of associated MgII systems with high-velocity outflows correlates with the average luminosities of their central quasars, indicating a relationship between outflows and the quasar feedback power. The {upsilon}_r_ distribution of the outflow MgII absorbers is peaked at 1023km/s, which is smaller than the corresponding value of the outflow CIV absorbers. The redshift number density evolution of absorbers (dn/dz) limited by {upsilon}_r_{>}-3000km/s differs from that of absorbers constrained by {upsilon}_r_>2000km/s. Absorbers limited by {upsilon}_r_>2000km/s and higher values exhibit profiles similar to dn/dz. In addition, the dn/dz is smaller when absorbers are constrained with larger {upsilon}_r_. The distributions of equivalent widths, and the ratio of W_r_^{lambda}2796^/W_r_^{lambda}2803^, are the same for associated and intervening systems, and independent of quasar luminosity.

The presented catalog contains a compilation of basic information on absorption-line systems (ALSs) in QSO spectra. The data are taken from publications available to the authors up to January 2002. The catalog includes, in particular, all the data of the catalogs by Junkkarinen et al. (1991ApJS...77..203J) and York et al. (1991MNRAS.250...24Y ). The catalog consists of table1.dat, table2.txt and the list of references in refs.dat file. The present catalog is also available at the site of the Dept. of Theor. - Super-luminous supernovae (SLSNe) are tremendously luminous explosions whose power sources and progenitors are highly debated. Broad-lined SNe Ic (SNe Ic-bl) are the only type of SNe that are connected with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Studying the spectral similarity and difference between the populations of hydrogen-poor SLSNe (SLSNe Ic) and of hydrogen-poor stripped-envelope core-collapse SNe, in particular SNe Ic and SNe Ic-bl, can provide crucial observations to test predictions of theories based on various power source models and progenitor models. In this paper, we collected all of the published optical spectra of 32 SLSNe Ic, 21 SNe Ic-bl, as well as 17 SNe Ic, quantified their spectral features, constructed average spectra, and compared them in a systematic way using new tools we have developed. We find that SLSNe Ic and SNe Ic-bl, including those connected with GRBs, have comparable widths for their spectral features and average absorption velocities at all phases. Thus, our findings strengthen the connection between SLSNe Ic and GRBs. In particular, SLSNe Ic have average FeII{lambda}5169 absorption velocities of -15000+/-2600km/s at 10 days after peak, which are higher than those of SNe Ic by ~7000km/s on average. SLSNe Ic also have significantly broader FeII{lambda}5169 lines than SNe Ic. Moreover, we find that such high absorption and width velocities of SLSNe Ic may be hard to explain with the interaction model, and none of the 13 SLSNe Ic with measured absorption velocities spanning over 10 days has a convincing flat velocity evolution, which is inconsistent with the magnetar model in one dimension. Lastly, we compare SN 2011kl, the first SN connected with an ultra-long GRB, with the mean spectrum of SLSNe Ic and of SNe Ic-bl.

- A new, complete sample of 14584 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z<0.35 is presented, which are uncovered homogeneously from the complete database of galaxies and quasars observed spectroscopically in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Seventh Data Release. The stellar continuum is properly removed for each spectrum with significant host absorption line features, and careful analyses of the emission line spectra, particularly in the H{alpha} and H{beta} wavebands, are carried out. The broad Balmer emission line, particularly H{alpha}, is used to indicate the presence of an AGN. The broad H{alpha} lines have luminosities in a range of 10^38.5^-10^44.3^erg/s, and line widths (FWHMs) of 500-34000km/s. The virial black hole masses, estimated from the broad-line measurements, span a range of 10^5.1^-10^10.3^M_{sun}_, and the Eddington ratios vary from -3.3 to 1.3 in logarithmic scale. Other quantities such as multiwavelength photometric properties and flags denoting peculiar line profiles are also included in this catalog. We describe the construction of this catalog and briefly discuss its properties. The catalog is publicly available online. This homogeneously selected AGN catalog, along with the accurately measured spectral parameters, provides the most updated, largest AGN sample data, which will enable further comprehensive investigations of the properties of the AGN population in the low-redshift universe.

- We develop a new diagnostic method to classify galaxies into active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosts, star-forming galaxies, and absorption-dominated galaxies by combining the [OIII]/H{beta} ratio with rest-frame U-B color. This can be used to robustly select AGNs in galaxy samples at intermediate redshifts (z<1). We compare the result of this optical AGN selection with X-ray selection using a sample of 3150 galaxies with 0.3<z<0.8 and I_AB_<22, selected from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey and the All-wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey. Among the 146 X-ray sources in this sample, 58% are classified optically as emission-line AGNs, the rest as star-forming galaxies or absorption-dominated galaxies. The latter are also known as "X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies" (XBONGs).

- We present improved black hole masses for 35 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on a complete and consistent reanalysis of broad emission-line reverberation-mapping data. From objects with multiple line measurements, we find that the highest precision measure of the virial product c{tau}{Delta}V^2^/G, where {tau} is the emission-line lag relative to continuum variations and {Delta}V is the emission-line width, is obtained by using the cross-correlation function centroid (as opposed to the cross-correlation function peak) for the time delay and the line dispersion (as opposed to FWHM) for the line width and by measuring the line width in the variable part of the spectrum.

- Doubly ionized silicon (SiIII) is a powerful tracer of diffuse ionized gas inside and outside of galaxies.It can be observed in the local Universe in ultraviolet (UV) absorption against bright extragalactic background sources. We here present an extensive study of intervening SiIII-selected absorbers and study the properties of the warm circumgalactic medium (CGM) around low-redshift (z<0.1) galaxies. We analyzed the UV absorption spectra of 303 extragalactic background sources, as obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We developed a geometrical model for the absorption-cross section of the CGM around the local galaxy population and compared the observed SiIII absorption statistics with predictions provided by the model. We also compared redshifts and positions of the absorbers with those of ~64,000 galaxies using archival galaxy-survey data to investigate the relation between intervening SiIII absorbers and the CGM. Along a total redshift path of {Delta}z~24, we identify 69 intervening SiIII systems that all show associated absorption from other low and high ions (e.g., HI, SiII, SiIV, CII, CIV). We derive a bias-corrected number density of dN/dz(SiIII)=2.5+/-0.4 for absorbers with column densities log N(SiIII)>12.2, which is ~3 times the number density of strong MgII systems at z=0. This number density matches the expected cross section of a SiIII absorbing CGM around the local galaxy population with a mean covering fraction of <f_c_>=0.69. For the majority (~60 percent) of the absorbers, we identify possible host galaxies within 300km/s of the absorbers and derive impact parameters {rho}<200kpc, demonstrating that the spatial distributions of SiIII absorbers and galaxies are highly correlated. Our study indicates that the majority of SiIII-selected absorbers in our sample trace the CGM of nearby galaxies within their virial radii at a typical covering fraction of ~70 percent. We estimate that diffuse gas in the CGM around galaxies, as traced by SiIII contains substantially more (more than twice as much) baryonic mass than their neutral interstellar medium.

- We present measurements of the UV/optical emission line parameters in a sample of 158 active galactic nuclei observed with the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), prior to the installation of COSTAR. We use an automated technique that accounts for galactic reddening, includes iron emission blends, galactic and intrinsic absorption lines, and performs multicomponent fits to the emission line profiles. We present measured line parameters (equivalent width and FWHM) for a large number (28) of different UV/optical lines, including upper limits for undetected lines.

- The goal of our serial papers is to examine the evolutionary connection between an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star formation in the AGN's host galaxy for partially obscured AGNs (i.e., Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies). Taking advantage of these galaxies, the properties of both components can be studied together by direct measurements. In this paper, we focus on broad-line composite galaxies (composite AGNs), which are located between the theoretical and empirical separation lines in the [NII]/H{alpha} versus [OIII]/H{beta} diagram. These galaxies are selected from the composite galaxies provided by the SDSS DR4 MPA/JHU catalogs. After we reanalyze the spectra, we perform a fine classification for the 85 composite AGNs in terms of Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) diagrams. All objects located below the three theoretical separation lines are associated with a young stellar population (<1Gyr), while either a young or old stellar population is identified in the individual multiply classified objects. The multiply classified objects with very old stellar populations are located in the LINER region in the [OI]/H{alpha} versus [OIII]/H{beta} diagram. We then consider the connection between AGNs and star formation to derive the key results. The Eddington ratio inferred from the broad H{alpha} emission, the age of the stellar population of the AGN's host as assessed by D_n_(4000), and the line ratio [OI]/H{alpha} are found to be related to each other.
