- Description:
- We report on the serendipitous discovery in the Blanco Cosmology Survey (BCS) imaging data of a z=0.9057 galaxy that is being strongly lensed by a massive galaxy cluster at a redshift of z=0.3838. The lens (BCS J2352-5452) was discovered while examining i- and z-band images being acquired in 2006 October during a BCS observing run. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph instrument on the Gemini-South 8m telescope confirmed the lensing nature of this system. Using weak-plus-strong lensing, velocity dispersion, cluster richness N_200_, and fitting to a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) cluster mass density profile, we have made three independent estimates of the mass M_200_ which are all very consistent with each other. The combination of the results from the three methods gives M_200_=(5.1+/-1.3)x10^14^M_{sun}_, which is fully consistent with the individual measurements. The final NFW concentration c_200_ from the combined fit is c_200_=5.4^+1.4^_-1.1_. We have compared our measurements of M_200_ and c_200_ with predictions for (1) clusters from {Lambda}CDM simulations, (2) lensing-selected clusters from simulations, and (3) a real sample of cluster lenses.

- BLAST: the redshift survey
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/707/1779
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) has recently surveyed ~8.7deg^2^ centered on Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South at 250, 350, and 500um. In Dye et al. (2009, Cat. J/ApJ/703/285), we presented the catalog of sources detected at 5{sigma} in at least one band in this field and the probable counterparts to these sources in other wavebands. In this paper, we present the results of a redshift survey in which we succeeded in measuring redshifts for 82 of these counterparts. The spectra show that the BLAST counterparts are mostly star-forming galaxies but not extreme ones when compared to those found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Roughly one quarter of the BLAST counterparts contain an active nucleus. We have also investigated the cases where there are two possible counterparts to the BLAST source, finding that in at least half of these there is evidence that the two galaxies are physically associated, either because they are interacting or because they are in the same large-scale structure. Finally, we have made the first direct measurements of the luminosity function in the three BLAST bands.

- BL Lac objects GTC low resolution spectroscopy
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/861/130
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We report on 16 BL Lacertae objects that were proposed to be at z>1. We present spectroscopic observations secured at the 10.4m GTC that allowed us to assess the redshift of these sources. In particular, for five objects, we disprove the previous value of the redshift reported in the literature and found that they lie at z<1. Moreover, two of them exhibit broad emission lines that are not characteristic of BL Lacertae objects. On the other hand, for eight targets, we improve the tentative value of z, previously based on only one feature, by detecting a number of emission lines. Finally, in three cases, we detect the onset of the Ly{alpha} forest at z>2.50. Based on the new high quality spectra, we found that only half of the observed objects can be classified as bona-fide BL Lacs.

- Blueshifted [O III] emission
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/130/381
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The [OIII]{lambda}5007 line is commonly used as an indicator of the systemic redshift of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Also, recent studies have used the width of this emission line as a proxy for the stellar velocity dispersion in the host galaxy. This paper calls both of these assumptions into question by analyzing a sample of approximately 400 AGN spectra from the first data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

- Bright QSOs in Southern Hemisphere (QUBRICS)
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/887/268
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The study of absorptions along the lines of sight to bright high-z QSOs is an invaluable cosmological tool that provides a wealth of information on the inter-/circum-galactic medium, dark matter, primordial elements, reionization, fundamental constants, and general relativity. Unfortunately, the number of bright (i<~18) QSOs at z>~2 in the southern hemisphere is much lower than that in the north, due to the lack of wide multiwavelength surveys at decl. {delta}<0{deg}, hampering the effectiveness of observations from southern observatories. In this work we present a new method based on Canonical Correlation Analysis to identify such objects, taking advantage of a number of available databases: Skymapper, Gaia DR2, WISE, and 2MASS. Our QSO candidate sample lists 1476 sources with i<18 over 12400deg^2^ in the southern hemisphere. With a preliminary campaign we observed spectroscopically 69 of them, confirming 54 new bright QSOs at z>2.5, corresponding to a success rate of our method of ~80%. Furthermore, we estimate a completeness of ~90% of our sample at completion of our observation campaign. The new QSOs confirmed by this first and the forthcoming campaigns (QUBRICS survey) will be the targets of subsequent studies using higher resolution spectrographs, like ESPRESSO, UVES, and (in the long term) ELT/HIRES.

- 185 bright XMM-CDFS sources spectral properties
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/639/A51
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present X-ray spectra of 185 bright sources detected in the XMM-Newton deep survey of the Chandra Deep Field South, combining the three EPIC cameras. The 2-10keV flux limit of the sample is 2x10^-15^erg/s/cm^2^. The sources are distributed over a redshift range of z=0.1-3.8. Eleven new X-ray redshift measurements are included. A spectral analysis was performed using a simple model to obtain absorbing column densities, rest-frame 2-10keV luminosities and Fe K line properties of 180 sources at z>0.4. Obscured AGN are found to be more abundant toward higher redshifts. Using the XMM-Newton data alone, seven Compton-thick AGN candidates are identified, which makes the Compton-thick AGN fraction to be ~=4%. An exploratory spectral inspection method with two rest-frame X-ray colours and an Fe line strength indicator is introduced and tested against the results from spectral fitting. This method works reasonably well to characterise a spectral shape and can be useful for a pre-selection of Compton-thick AGN candidates. We found six objects exhibiting broad Fe K lines out of 21 unobscured AGN of best data quality, implying a detection rate of 30%. Five redshift spikes, each of which has more than six sources, are identified in the redshift distribution of the X-ray sources. Contrary to the overall trend, the sources at the two higher-redshift spikes at z=1.61 and z=2.57 have puzzlingly low obscuration.

- Broad H{beta} emission line in 102 Seyfert galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/821/33
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- A sample of 102 local (0.02=<z=<0.1) Seyfert galaxies with black hole masses M_BH_>10^7^M_{sun}_ was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and observed using the Keck 10 m telescope to study the scaling relations between M_BH_ and host galaxy properties. We study profile changes of the broad H{beta} emission line within the three to nine year time frame between the two sets of spectra. The variability of the broad H{beta} emission line is of particular interest, not only because it is used to estimate M_BH_, but also because its strength and width are used to classify Seyfert galaxies into different types. At least some form of broad-line variability (in either width or flux) is observed in the majority (~66%) of the objects, resulting in a Seyfert-type change for ~38% of the objects, likely driven by variable accretion and/or obscuration. The broad H{beta} line virtually disappears in 3/102 (~3%) extreme cases. We discuss potential causes for these changing look active galactic nuclei. While similar dramatic transitions have previously been reported in the literature, either on a case-by-case basis or in larger samples focusing on quasars at higher redshifts, our study provides statistical information on the frequency of H{beta} line variability in a sample of low-redshift Seyfert galaxies.

- Candidate ICRF flat-spectrum radio sources. III.
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/153/157
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In extending our spectroscopic program, which targets sources drawn from the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) Catalog, we have obtained spectra for ~160 compact, flat-spectrum radio sources and determined redshifts for 112 quasars and radio galaxies. A further 14 sources with featureless spectra have been classified as BL Lac objects. Spectra were obtained at three telescopes: the 3.58m European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope, and the two 8.2m Gemini telescopes in Hawaii and Chile. While most of the sources are powerful quasars, a significant fraction of radio galaxies is also included from the list of non-defining ICRF radio sources.

- Candidate Ly{alpha} emitting galaxies at z~3.8
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/823/11
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present new observations of the field containing the z=3.786 protocluster PC 217.96+32.3. We confirm that it is one of the largest known and most overdense high-redshift structures. Such structures are rare even in the largest cosmological simulations. We used the Mayall/MOSAIC1.1 imaging camera to image a 1.2x0.6{deg} area (~150x75 comoving Mpc) surrounding the protocluster's core and discovered 165 candidate Ly{alpha} emitting galaxies (LAEs) and 788 candidate Lyman Break galaxies (LBGs). There are at least two overdense regions traced by the LAEs, the largest of which shows an areal overdensity in its core (i.e., within a radius of 2.5 comoving Mpc) of 14+/-7 relative to the average LAE spatial density (\bar{rho}) in the imaged field. Further, \bar{rho} is twice that derived by other field LAE surveys. Spectroscopy with Keck/DEIMOS yielded redshifts for 164 galaxies (79 LAEs and 85 LBGs); 65 lie at a redshift of 3.785+/-0.010. The velocity dispersion of galaxies near the core is {sigma}=350+/-40km/s, a value robust to selection effects. The overdensities are likely to collapse into systems with present-day masses of >10^15^M_{sun}_ and >6x10^14^M_{sun}_. The low velocity dispersion may suggest a dynamically young protocluster. We find a weak trend between narrow-band (Ly{alpha}) luminosity and environmental density: the Ly{alpha} luminosity is enhanced on average by 1.35x within the protocluster core. There is no evidence that the Ly{alpha} equivalent width depends on environment. These suggest that star formation and/or active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity is enhanced in the higher-density regions of the structure. PC 217.96+32.3 is a Coma cluster analog, witnessed in the process of formation.

- Description:
- We present the final observational data for a spectroscopic study of a sample of cD galaxy clusters. The goal of this program has been to study the dynamics of the clusters, with emphasis on determining the nature and frequency of peculiar-velocity cD galaxies. In this paper we present redshifts for 762 galaxies in the fields of the rich Abell clusters A779, A1691, A1749, A1767, A1837, A1927, A2067, A2079, A2089, A2199, and A2666. We also present preliminary dynamical properties for these clusters using our measured redshifts.
