- We present the host-galaxy molecular gas properties of a sample of 213 nearby (0.01<z<0.05) hard-X-ray-selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) galaxies, drawn from the 70-month catalog of Swift's Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), with 200 new CO(2-1) line measurements obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment telescope. We find that AGN in massive galaxies (log(M_*_/M_{sun}_)>10.5) tend to have more molecular gas and higher gas fractions than inactive galaxies matched in stellar mass. When matched in star formation, we find AGN galaxies show no difference from inactive galaxies, with no evidence that AGN feedback affects the molecular gas. The higher molecular gas content is related to AGN galaxies hosting a population of gas-rich early types with an order of magnitude more molecular gas and a smaller fraction of quenched, passive galaxies (~5% versus 49%) compared to inactive galaxies. The likelihood of a given galaxy hosting an AGN (L_bol_>10^44^erg/s) increases by ~10-100 between a molecular gas mass of 10^8.7^M_{sun}_ and 10^10.2^M_{sun}_. AGN galaxies with a higher Eddington ratio (log(L/L_Edd_)>-1.3) tend to have higher molecular gas masses and gas fractions. The log(NH/cm^-2^)>23.4) of AGN galaxies with higher column densities are associated with lower depletion timescales and may prefer hosts with more gas centrally concentrated in the bulge that may be more prone to quenching than galaxy-wide molecular gas. The significant average link of host-galaxy molecular gas supply to supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth may naturally lead to the general correlations found between SMBHs and their host galaxies, such as the correlations between SMBH mass and bulge properties, and the redshift evolution of star formation and SMBH growth.

- Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are believed to be powered by the accretion of matter onto low-mass black holes (BHs) in spiral host galaxies with BH masses M_BH_~10^6^-10^8^M_{sun}_. However, the broadband spectral energy distribution of the {gamma}-ray-emitting NLS1s are found to be similar to flat-spectrum radio quasars. This challenges our current notion of NLS1s having low M_BH_. To resolve this tension of low M_BH_ values in NLS1s, we fitted the observed optical spectrum of a sample of radio-loud NLS1s (RL-NLS1s), radio-quiet NLS1s (RQ-NLS1s), and radio-quiet broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RQ-BLS1s) of ~500 each with the standard Shakura-Sunyaev accretion disk (AD) model. For RL-NLS1s we found a mean log(M_BH_^AD^/M_{sun}_) of 7.98+/-0.54. For RQ-NLS1s and RQ-BLS1s we found mean log(M_BH_^AD^/M_{sun}_) of 8.00+/-0.43 and 7.90+/-0.57, respectively. While the derived M_BH_^AD^ values of RQ-BLS1s are similar to their virial masses, for NLS1s the derived M_BH_^AD^ values are about an order of magnitude larger than their virial estimates. Our analysis thus indicates that NLS1s have M_BH_ similar to RQ-BLS1s and their available virial M_BH_ values are underestimated, influenced by their observed relatively small emission line widths. Considering Eddington ratio as an estimation of the accretion rate and using M_BH_^AD^, we found the mean accretion rate of our RQ-NLS1s, RL-NLS1s, and RQ-BLS1s as 0.06_-0.05_^+0.16^, 0.05_-0.04_^+0.18^ and 0.05_-0.04_^+0.15^, respectively. Our results therefore suggest that NLS1s have BH masses and accretion rates that are similar to BLS1s.

The sample includes 77 blazars (28 FSRQs, 26 LBLs, and 23 HBLs) and 60 Seyfert galaxies, of which the extended spectral energy distribution information and redshifts are available. Within the framework of accreting black holes, the accretion rates for these sources were estimated based on their bolometric luminosities.

- A sample of 102 local (0.02=<z=<0.1) Seyfert galaxies with black hole masses M_BH_>10^7^M_{sun}_ was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and observed using the Keck 10 m telescope to study the scaling relations between M_BH_ and host galaxy properties. We study profile changes of the broad H{beta} emission line within the three to nine year time frame between the two sets of spectra. The variability of the broad H{beta} emission line is of particular interest, not only because it is used to estimate M_BH_, but also because its strength and width are used to classify Seyfert galaxies into different types. At least some form of broad-line variability (in either width or flux) is observed in the majority (~66%) of the objects, resulting in a Seyfert-type change for ~38% of the objects, likely driven by variable accretion and/or obscuration. The broad H{beta} line virtually disappears in 3/102 (~3%) extreme cases. We discuss potential causes for these changing look active galactic nuclei. While similar dramatic transitions have previously been reported in the literature, either on a case-by-case basis or in larger samples focusing on quasars at higher redshifts, our study provides statistical information on the frequency of H{beta} line variability in a sample of low-redshift Seyfert galaxies.

- We present a new accurate catalog of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) final data release, which is currently the most extensive spectroscopic survey available in the southern sky whose database has not yet been systematically explored. We classified 167 sources as NLS1s based on their optical spectral properties. We derived flux-calibrated spectra for the first time that the 6dFGS does not provide. By analyzing these spectra, we obtained strong correlations between the monochromatic luminosity at 5100 Angstrom and the luminosities of H-beta and [OIII] lines. The central black hole mass and the Eddington ratio have average values of 0.86x10^7^M_{sun}_ and 0.96L_Edd_ respectively, which are typical values for NLS1s. In the sample, 23 (13.8%) NLS1s were detected at radio frequencies, and 12 (7.0%) of them are radio-loud. Our results confirmed that radio-loud sources tend to have higher redshift, a more massive black hole, and higher radio and optical luminosities than radio-quiet sources.

- We present a Cepheid-based distance to the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC6814 from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We obtained F555W and F814W imaging over the course of 12 visits with logarithmic time spacing in 2013 August-October. We detected and made photometric measurements for 16469 unique sources across all images in both filters, from which we identify 90 excellent Cepheid candidates spanning a range of periods of 13-84days. We find evidence for incompleteness in the detection of candidates at periods <21days. Based on the analysis of Cepheid candidates above the incompleteness limit, we determine a distance modulus for NGC6814 relative to the LMC of {mu}_rel,LMC_=13.200_-0.031_^+0.031^mag. Adopting the recent constraint of the distance modulus to the LMC determined by Pietrzynski et al., we find m-M=31.677_-0.041_^+0.041^ which gives a distance of 21.65{+/-}0.41Mpc to NGC6814.

- We present an analysis of the compact X-ray source population in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, imaged with a 50ks Chandra observation. We find a total of 84 compact sources on the S3 chip, of which 66 are located within the 25.0B-mag/arcsec^2^ isophote of the galactic disk of NGC 1068. Spectra have been obtained for the 21 sources with at least 50 counts and modeled with both multicolor disk blackbody and power-law models.

- We present new CRIRES spectroscopic observations of the Br{gamma} emission line in the nuclear region of the Circinus galaxy, obtained with the aim of measuring the black hole (BH) mass with the spectroastrometric technique. The Circinus galaxy is an ideal benchmark for the spectroastrometric technique given its proximity and secure BH measurement obtained with the observation of its nuclear H_2_O maser disk. The kinematical data have been analyzed both with the classical method based on the analysis of the rotation curves and with the new method developed by us that is based on spectroastrometry. The classical method indicates that the gas disk rotates in a gravitational potential resulting from an extended stellar mass distribution and a spatially unresolved dynamical mass of (1.7+/-0.2)x10^7^M_{sun}_, concentrated within r<7pc, corresponding to the seeing-limited resolution of the observations. The new method is capable of probing the gas rotation at scales that are a factor ~3.5 smaller than those probed by the rotation curve analysis, highlighting the potential of spectroastrometry. The dynamical mass, which is spatially unresolved with the spectroastrometric method, is a factor ~2 smaller, 7.9^+1.4^_-1.1_x10^6^M_{sun}_, indicating that spectroastrometry has been able to spatially resolve the nuclear mass distribution down to 2 pc scales. This unresolved mass is still a factor ~4.5 larger than the BH mass measurement obtained with the H_2_O maser emission, indicating that even with spectroastrometry, it has not been possible to resolve the sphere of influence of the BH. Based on literature data, this spatially unresolved dynamical mass distribution is likely dominated by warm molecular gas and has been tentatively identified with the circum-nuclear torus that prevents a direct view of the central BH in Circinus. This mass distribution, with a size of ~2pc, is similar in shape to that of the star cluster of the Milky Way, suggesting that a molecular torus, forming stars at a high rate, might be the earlier evolutionary stage of the nuclear star clusters that are common in late-type spirals.
