- Fundamental atomic transition parameters, such as oscillator strengths and rest wavelengths, play a key role in modelling and understanding the chemical composition of stars in the universe. Despite the significant work under way to produce these parameters for many astrophysically important ions, uncertainties in these parameters remain large and can limit the accuracy of chemical abundance determinations. The Belgian repository of fundamental atomic data and stellar spectra (BRASS) aims to provide a large systematic and homogeneous quality assessment of the atomic data available for quantitative spectroscopy. BRASS shall compare synthetic spectra against extremely high-quality observed spectra, at a resolution of ~85000 and signal-noise ratios of ~1000, for approximately 20 bright BAFGK spectral-type stars, in order to critically evaluate the atomic data available for over a thousand potentially useful spectral lines. A large-scale homogeneous selection of atomic lines is performed by synthesising theoretical spectra of literature atomic lines for FGK-type stars including the Sun, resulting in a selection of 1091 theoretically deep and unblended lines in the wavelength range 4200-6800{AA}, which may be suitable for quality assessment. Astrophysical log(gf) values are determined for the 1091 transitions using two commonly employed methods. The agreement of these log(gf) values are used to select well-behaved lines for quality assessment. We found 845 atomic lines to be suitable for quality assessment, of which 408 were found to be robust against systematic differences between analysis methods. Around 53% of the quality-assessed lines were found to have at least one literature log(gf) value in agreement with our derived values, though the remaining values can disagree by as much as 0.5dex. Only ~38% of FeI lines were found to have sufficiently accurate log(gf) values, increasing to ~70-75% for the remaining Fe-group lines.

- We provide a set of atomic lines which are suitable for the description of ultracool dwarf spectra from 10000 to 25000{AA}. This atomic linelist was made using both synthetic spectra calculations and existing atlases of infrared spectra of Arcturus and Sunspot umbra. We present plots which show the comparison of synthetic spectra and observed Arcturus and Sunspot umbral spectra for all atomic lines likely to be observable in high resolution infrared spectra.

- We have derived relations between FWHMs and equivalent widths of metallic absorption lines in the spectra of RR Lyrae stars to estimate new upper limits on the axial equatorial rotational velocities of RR Lyrae and metal-poor red horizontal branch (RHB) stars. We have also derived the variations of RR Lyrae macroturbulent velocities during the pulsation cycles. In RRab cycles, the line widths are dominated by phase-dependent convolutions of axial rotation and macroturbulence, which we designate as V_macrot_. The behavior of V_macrot_ is remarkably uniform among the RRab stars, but the behavior of V_macrot_ among RRc stars varies strongly from star to star. The RRab stars exhibit an upper limit on V_macrot_ of 5+/-1 km/s with weak evidence of an anticorrelation with T_eff_. The RRc minima range from 2 to 12 km/s. The abrupt decline in large rotations with decreasing T_eff_ at the blue boundary of the instability strip and the apparently smooth continuous variation among the RRab and RHB stars suggests that HB stars gain/lose surface angular momentum on timescales that are short compared to HB lifetimes. The V_macrot_ values for our metal-poor RHB stars agree well with those derived by Fourier analysis of an independent but less metal-poor sample of Carney et al. (2008AJ....135..892C); they conform qualitatively to the expectations of Tanner et al. (2013ApJ...778..117T). A general conclusion of our investigation is that surface angular momentum as measured by V_rot_sin(i) is not a reliable indicator of total stellar angular momentum anywhere along the HB.

- We have constructed an all-sky catalog of optical active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with z<0.09, based on optical spectroscopy, from the parent sample of galaxies in the 2MASS Redshift Survey, a near-complete census of the nearby universe. Our catalog consists of 1929 broad-line AGNs and 6562 narrow-line AGNs that satisfy the Kauffmann et al. (2003MNRAS.346.1055K) criteria, of which 3607 also satisfy the Kewley et al. (2006MNRAS.372..961K) criteria. We also report emission-line widths, fluxes, flux errors, and signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) of all the galaxies in our spectroscopic sample, allowing users to customize the selection criteria. Although we uniformly processed the spectra of galaxies from a homogeneous parent sample, inhomogeneities persist owing to the differences in the quality of the obtained spectra, taken with different instruments, and the unavailability of spectra for ~20% of the galaxies. We quantify how the differences in spectral quality affect not only the AGN detection rates but also ratios of broad-line to narrow-line AGNs. We find that the inhomogeneities primarily stem from the continuum S/N in the spectra near the emission lines of interest. We fit for the AGN fraction as a function of continuum S/N and assign AGN likelihoods to galaxies that were not identified as AGNs using the available spectra. This correction results in a catalog suitable for statistical studies. This work also paves the way for a truly homogeneous and complete nearby AGN catalog by identifying galaxies whose AGN status needs to be verified with higher-quality spectra, quantifying the spectral quality necessary to do so.

- Near-infrared (hereafter NIR) data may provide complementary information to the traditional optical population synthesis analysis of unresolved stellar populations because the spectral energy distribution of the galaxies in the 1-2.5um range is dominated by different types of stars than at optical wavelengths. Furthermore, NIR data are less affected by dust absorption and hence could constrain the stellar populations in dust-obscured galaxies. We attempt to develop observational constraints on the stellar populations of unresolved stellar systems in the NIR.

- We present measurements of the soft X-ray background (SXRB) OVII and OVIII intensity between l=120{deg} and l=240{deg}, the first results of a survey of the SXRB using archival XMM-Newton observations. We do not restrict ourselves to blank-sky observations, but instead use as many observations as possible, removing bright or extended sources by hand if necessary. In an attempt to minimize contamination from near-Earth solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) emission, we remove times of high solar wind proton flux from the data. Without this filtering we are able to extract measurements from 586 XMM-Newton observations. With this filtering, ~1/2 of the observations are rendered unusable, and we are able to extract measurements from 303 observations. The oxygen intensities are typically ~0.5-10 photons/cm^2^/s/sr (line units, L.U.) for OVII and ~0-5L.U. for OVIII. The proton flux filtering does not systematically reduce the oxygen intensities measured from a given observation. However, the filtering does preferentially remove the observations with higher oxygen intensities. Our data set includes 69 directions with multiple observations, whose oxygen intensity variations can be used to constrain SWCX models. After removing observations likely to be contaminated by heliospheric SWCX emission, we use our results to examine the Galactic halo.

- AX Monocerotis is a 232d, noneclipsing, interacting binary star that consists of a K giant, a Be-like giant, and a large amounts of circumstellar material. The K star is almost certainly a synchronous rotator and is probably in contact with its critical lobe. The Be star was believed to be a rapid rotator based on extremely wide absorption lines, but new spectra show that these lines arise from the circumstellar environment. Hydrogen emission, also circumstellar, is many times stronger than the continuum. Near-ultraviolet light curves exhibit a 0.5 mag dip near phase 0.75, but there is no such variability at longer wavelengths. Gas flow trajectories from the cusp of the K star toward the Be star provide a simple explanation for the photometric and spectroscopic behavior. We may have found a decreasing orbital period, but more data are necessary to confirm this result. We present several models for AX Mon based on (1) new and archival visible photometry, (2) archival ultraviolet spectroscopy, (3) new and archival visible spectroscopy, (4) new visible polarimetry, and (5) new radio photometry. Further observations, including optical interferometry, are proposed.

- Despite many decades of study, the kinematics of the broad-line region of 3C 273 are still poorly understood. We report a new, high signal-to-noise, reverberation mapping campaign carried out from 2008 November to 2018 March that allows the determination of time lags between emission lines and the variable continuum with high precision. The time lag of variations in H{beta} relative to those of the 5100{AA} continuum is 146.8_-12.1_^+8.3^days in the rest frame, which agrees very well with the Paschen-{alpha} region measured by the GRAVITY at The Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The time lag of the H{gamma} emission line is found to be nearly the same as that for H{beta}. The lag of the FeII emission is 322.0_-57.9_^+55.5^days, longer by a factor of ~2 than that of the Balmer lines. The velocity-resolved lag measurements of the H{beta} line show a complex structure that can be possibly explained by a rotation-dominated disk with some inflowing radial velocity in the H{beta}-emitting region. Taking the virial factor of f_BLR_=1.3, we derive a BH mass of dM/dt=4.1_-0.4_^+0.3^x10^8^M_{sun}_ and an accretion rate of 9.3L_Edd_c^-2^ from the H{beta} line. The decomposition of its Hubble Space Telescope images yields a host stellar mass of M*=10^11.3+/-0.7^M_{sun}_, and a ratio of dM/dt/M*~2.0x10^-3^ in agreement with the Magorrian relation. In the near future, it is expected to compare the geometrically thick BLR discovered by the GRAVITY in 3C 273 with its spatially resolved torus in order to understand the potential connection between the BLR and the torus.

- We present a catalog of 5039 broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (QSOs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5) QSO catalog that have absorption troughs covering a continuous velocity range >=2000km/s. We have fitted ultraviolet (UV) continua and line emission in each case, enabling us to report common diagnostics of BAL strengths and velocities in the range -25000 to 0km/s for SiIV1400, CIV1549, AlIII1857, and MgII2799. We calculate these diagnostics using the spectrum listed in the DR5 QSO catalog, and also for spectra from additional SDSS observing epochs when available. In cases where BAL QSOs have been observed with Chandra or XMM-Newton, we report the X-ray monochromatic luminosities of these sources. We confirm and extend previous findings that BAL QSOs are more strongly reddened in the rest-frame UV than non-BAL QSOs, and that BAL QSOs are relatively X-ray weak compared to non-BAL QSOs.
