- A sample of 102 local (0.02=<z=<0.1) Seyfert galaxies with black hole masses M_BH_>10^7^M_{sun}_ was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and observed using the Keck 10 m telescope to study the scaling relations between M_BH_ and host galaxy properties. We study profile changes of the broad H{beta} emission line within the three to nine year time frame between the two sets of spectra. The variability of the broad H{beta} emission line is of particular interest, not only because it is used to estimate M_BH_, but also because its strength and width are used to classify Seyfert galaxies into different types. At least some form of broad-line variability (in either width or flux) is observed in the majority (~66%) of the objects, resulting in a Seyfert-type change for ~38% of the objects, likely driven by variable accretion and/or obscuration. The broad H{beta} line virtually disappears in 3/102 (~3%) extreme cases. We discuss potential causes for these changing look active galactic nuclei. While similar dramatic transitions have previously been reported in the literature, either on a case-by-case basis or in larger samples focusing on quasars at higher redshifts, our study provides statistical information on the frequency of H{beta} line variability in a sample of low-redshift Seyfert galaxies.

- We compile a catalog of reliable BLA (thermally broadened Ly{alpha} absorber) candidates along seven active galactic nucleus sight lines from a larger set of Ly{alpha} absorbers observed by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We compare our measurements based on independent reduction and analysis of the data to those published by other research groups. We examine the detailed structure of each absorber and determine a reliable line width and column density. Purported BLAs are grouped into probable (15), possible (48), and non-BLA (56) categories. Based on 164 measured curve of growth (COG) HI line measurements, we statistically correct the observed line widths via a Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, we present new, high signal-to-noise ratio observations of several of the BLA candidate lines from Early Release Observations made by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on HST.

- We report on the measurement of the physical properties (rest-frame K-band luminosity and total stellar mass) of the hosts of 89 broad-line (type-1) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected in the zCOSMOS survey in the redshift range 1<z<2.2. The unprecedented multi-wavelength coverage of the survey field allows us to disentangle the emission of the host galaxy from that of the nuclear black hole in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We derive an estimate of black hole masses through the analysis of the broad MgII emission lines observed in the medium-resolution spectra taken with VIMOS/VLT as part of the zCOSMOS project.

- We have investigated the broad-line Balmer decrements (H{alpha/H{beta}) for a large, homogeneous sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) using spectroscopic data obtained in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The sample, drawn from the Fourth Data Release, comprises 446 low-redshift (z<=0.35) active galactic nuclei (AGN) that have blue optical continua as indicated by the spectral slopes in order to minimize the effect of dust extinction. We find that (i) the distribution of the intrinsic broad-line H{alpha}/H{beta} ratio can be well described by log-Gaussian, with a peak at H{alpha}/H{beta}=3.06 and a standard deviation of about 0.03dex only; (ii) the Balmer decrement does not correlate with AGN properties such as luminosity, accretion rate and continuum slope, etc.; (iii) on average, the Balmer decrements are found to be only slightly larger in radio-loud sources (3.37) and sources having double-peaked emission-line profiles (3.27) compared to the rest of the sample. We therefore suggest that the broad-line H{alpha}/H{beta} ratio can be used as a good indicator for dust extinction in the AGN broad-line region; this is especially true for radio-quiet AGN with regular emission-line profiles, which constitute the vast majority of the AGN population.

- We combine 131 new medium-resolution (R~2000) J-band spectra of M, L, and T dwarfs from the Keck NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey (BDSS) with 97 previously published BDSS spectra to study surface-gravity-sensitive indices for 228 low-mass stars and brown dwarfs spanning spectral types M5-T9. Specifically, we use an established set of spectral indices to determine surface gravity classifications for all of the M6-L7 objects in our sample by measuring the equivalent widths (EW) of the K I lines at 1.1692, 1.1778, and 1.2529{mu}m, and the 1.2{mu}m FeH_J_ absorption index. Our results are consistent with previous surface gravity measurements, showing a distinct double peak-at ~L5 and T5-in K I EW as a function of spectral type. We analyze the K I EWs of 73 objects of known ages and find a linear trend between log(Age) and EW. From this relationship, we assign age ranges to the very low gravity, intermediate gravity, and field gravity designations for spectral types M6-L0. Interestingly, the ages probed by these designations remain broad, change with spectral type, and depend on the gravity-sensitive index used. Gravity designations are useful indicators of the possibility of youth, but current data sets cannot be used to provide a precise age estimate.

- We performed a kinematical analysis of the [CII] line emission of the BR 1202-0725 system at z~4.7 using ALMA science verification observations. The most prominent sources of this system are a quasar (QSO) and a submillimeter galaxy (SMG), separated by a projected distance of about ~24kpc and characterized by very high star formation rates, higher than 1000M_{sun}_/yr. However, the ALMA observations reveal that these galaxies apparently have undisturbed rotating disks, which is at variance with the commonly accepted scenario in which strong star formation activity is induced by a major merger.We also detected faint components which, after spectral deblending, were spatially resolved from the main QSO and SMG emissions. The relative velocities and positions of these components are compatible with orbital motions within the gravitational potentials generated by the QSO host galaxy and the SMG, suggesting that they are smaller galaxies in interaction or gas clouds in accretion flows of tidal streams. Moreover, we did not find any clear spectral evidence for outflows caused by active galactic nuclei or stellar feedback. This suggests that the high star formation rates might be induced by interactions or minor mergers with these companions, which do not affect the large-scale kinematics of the disks, however. Alternatively, the strong star formation may be fueled by the accretion of pristine gas from the host halo. Our kinematical analysis also indicates that the QSO and the SMG have similar dynamical masses, mostly in the form of molecular gas, and that the QSO host galaxy and the SMG are seen close to face-on with slightly different disk inclinations: the QSO host galaxy is seen almost face-on (i~15{deg}), while the SMG is seen at higher inclinations (i~25{deg}). Finally, the ratio between the black hole mass of the QSO, obtained from new X-shooter spectroscopy, and the dynamical mass of the host galaxy is similar to value found in very massive local galaxies, suggesting that the evolution of black hole galaxy relations is probably better studied with dynamical than with stellar host galaxy masses.

- Microlensing events have been observed regularly by surveys such as MACHO, OGLE and MOA. They offer an excellent way to probe the galactic structure, kinematics and stellar content. We have undertaken a follow-up study of 16 galactic microlensing events to determine masses and locations of the sources of these events within the Galaxy. Spectroscopy allows us to obtain information about the sources of the events. Low resolution spectra obtained with the Magellan I and II telescopes were analyzed to obtain radial velocities, spectral type and extinction by the method of Kane & Sahu (2003ApJ...582..743K). We also present results for the lens of the event using the microlensing light curve when possible. Light curves have been analyzed with the standard and the parallax models. We have inferred a configuration inside our galaxy for each event, and therefore a lens mass estimation using a suitable galaxy model. Lens mass determination in some cases shows massive lenses that can be considered black hole candidates. This is the case for the events MACHO-98-BLG-6, and OGLE-00-BUL-43. In our sample only three events do not have enough parallax signal for a successful estimation of the lens mass.

- PSR J1306-40 is a millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary with a non-degenerate companion in an unusually long ~1.097 day orbit. We present new optical photometry and spectroscopy of this system, and model these data to constrain fundamental properties of the binary such as the component masses and distance. The optical data imply a minimum neutron star mass of 1.75+/-0.09M_{sun}_ (1{sigma}) and a high, nearly edge-on inclination. The light curves suggest a large hot spot on the companion, suggestive of a portion of the pulsar wind being channeled to the stellar surface by the magnetic field of the secondary, mediated via an intrabinary shock. The H{alpha} line profiles switch rapidly from emission to absorption near the companion inferior conjunction, consistent with an eclipse of the compact emission region at these phases. At our optically inferred distance of 4.7+/-0.5kpc, the X-ray luminosity is ~10^33^erg/s, brighter than nearly all known redbacks in the pulsar state. The long-period, subgiant-like secondary, and luminous X-ray emission suggest this system may be part of the expanding class of MSP binaries that are progenitors to typical field pulsar-white dwarf binaries.

- Low-luminosity radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) are of importance in studies concerning feedback from radio AGN since a dominant fraction of AGN belong to this class. We report high-resolution Very Large Array (VLA) and European VLBI Network (EVN) observations of HI 21cm absorption from a young, compact steep-spectrum radio source, B2 0258+35, nested in the early-type galaxy NGC 1167, which contains a 160kpc HI disc. Our VLA and EVN HI absorption observations, modelling, and comparison with molecular gas data suggest that the cold gas in the centre of NGC 1167 is very turbulent (with a velocity dispersion of ~90km/s) and that this turbulence is induced by the interaction of the jets with the interstellar medium (ISM). Furthermore, the ionised gas in the galaxy shows evidence of shock heating at a few kpc from the radio source. These findings support the results from numerical simulations of radio jets expanding into a clumpy gas disc, which predict that the radio jets in this case percolate through the gas disc and drive shocks into the ISM at distances much larger than their physical extent. These results expand the number of low-luminosity radio sources found to impact the surrounding medium, thereby highlighting the possible relevance of these AGN for feedback.
