- We have conducted spectrum analyses of 24 field metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2) red horizontal-branch (RHB) stars identified in the HK objective-prism survey and 6 such stars in the globular cluster M15, based on high-quality spectra (R~40000, S/N~100) obtained with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrograph at the Clay 6.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. The atmospheric parameters of the RHB stars provide interesting bridges between turnoff stars of similar temperature and red giant branch (RGB) stars of similar gravity, and they permit investigations of abundance trends [X/Fe] versus [Fe/H] in a relatively unexplored region of the temperature-gravity plane. We find that the Teff, logg, vt, and [Fe/H] values determined from our spectra are consistent with expectations from literature spectroscopic studies of other evolved metal-poor stellar classes.

- High-resolution spectra of 13 core helium-burning stars in the thick disk of the Galaxy have been obtained with the SOFIN spectrograph on the Nordic Optical Telescope to investigate abundances of up to 22 chemical elements. Abundances of carbon were studied using the C_2_ Swan (0, 1) band head at 5635.5{AA}. The wavelength interval 7980-8130{AA} with strong CN features was analysed in order to determine nitrogen abundances and 12C/13C isotope ratios. The oxygen abundances were determined from the [O I] line at 6300{AA}. Abundances in the investigated stars suggest that carbon is depleted by about 0.3dex, nitrogen is enhanced by more than 0.4dex and oxygen is unaltered. The 12C/13C ratios are lowered and lie between values 3 and 7 which is in agreement with "cool bottom processing" predictions (Boothroyd & Sackmann, 1999ApJ...510..232B). The C/N ratios in the investigated stars are lowered to values between 0.7 and 1.2 which is less than present day theoretical predictions and call for further studies of stellar mixing processes. Abundance ratios of O, Mg, Eu and other heavy chemical elements to iron in the investigated stars show a pattern characteristic of thick disk stars. The results provide evidence that the thick disk population has a distinct chemical history from the thin disk. The onset of the bulk of SN Ia is suggested to appear at [Fe/H]~-0.6dex.

- 51 Eridani b is an exoplanet around a young (20Myr) nearby (29.4pc) F0-type star, which was recently discovered by direct imaging. It is one of the closest direct imaging planets in angular and physical separation (~0.5", ~13AU) and is well suited for spectroscopic analysis using integral field spectrographs. We aim to refine the atmospheric properties of the known giant planet and to constrain the architecture of the system further by searching for additional companions. We used the extreme adaptive optics instrument SPHERE at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to obtain simultaneous dual-band imaging with IRDIS and integral field spectra with IFS, extending the spectral coverage of the planet to the complete Y- to H-band range and providing additional photometry in the K12-bands (2.11, 2.25 micron). We present the first spectrophotometric measurements in the Y and K bands for the planet and revise its J-band flux to values 40% fainter than previous measurements. Cloudy models with uniform cloud coverage provide a good match to the data. We derive the temperature, radius, surface gravity, metallicity, and cloud sedimentation parameter fsed. We find that the atmosphere is highly super-solar ([Fe/H]~1.0), and the low fsed~1.26 value is indicative of a vertically extended, optically thick cloud cover with small sized particles. The model radius and surface gravity estimates suggest higher planetary masses of M_gravity_=9.1^+4.9^_-3.3_. The evolutionary model only provides a lower mass limit of >2M_jupiter_ (for pure hot-start). The cold-start model cannot explain the luminosity of the planet. The SPHERE and NACO/SAM detection limits probe the 51 Eri system at solar system scales and exclude brown-dwarf companions more massive than 20M_jupiter_ beyond separations of ~2.5AU and giant planets more massive than 2M_jupiter_ beyond 9 au.

- Accurate line lists for three molecules, BeH, MgH and CaH, in their ground electronic states are presented. These line lists are suitable for temperatures relevant to exoplanetary atmospheres and cool stars (up to 2000K). A combination of empirical and ab initio methods is used. The rovibrational energy levels of BeH, MgH and CaH are computed using the programs Level and DPotFit in conjunction with 'spectroscopic' potential energy curves (PECs). The PEC of BeH is taken from the literature, while the PECs of CaH and MgH are generated by fitting to the experimental transition energy levels. Both spin-rotation interactions (except for BeH, for which it is negligible) and non-adiabatic corrections are explicitly taken into account. Accurate line intensities are generated using newly computed ab initio dipole moment curves for each molecule using high levels of theory. Full line lists of rotation-vibration transitions for ^9^BeH, ^24^MgH, ^25^MgH, ^26^MgH and ^40CaH are made available in an electronic form as supplementary data to this article and at www.exomol.com .

- A new hot line list is calculated for ^12^CH_4_ in its ground electronic state. This line list, called 10to10, contains 9.8 billion transitions and should be complete for temperatures up to 1500K. It covers the wavelengths longer than 1{mu}m and includes all transitions to upper states with energies below hc 18000cm^-1^ and rotational excitation up to J=39. The line list is computed using the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of CH_4_ obtained by variational solution of the SCHR equation for the rotation-vibration motion of nuclei employing program TROVE and a new 'spectroscopic' potential energy surface (PES) obtained by refining an ab initio PES (CCSD(T)-F12c/aug-cc-pVQZ) in a least-squares fitting to the experimentally derived energies with J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4 as extracted from the HITRAN database. The dipole transition probabilities are represented by the Einstein-A coefficients obtained using a previously reported ab initio dipole moment surface (CCSD(T)-F12c/aug-cc-pVTZ). Detailed comparisons with other available sources of methane transitions including HITRAN, experimental compilations and other theoretical line lists show that these sources lack transitions both higher temperatures and near infrared wavelengths. The 10to10 line list is suitable for modelling atmospheres of cool stars and exoplanets.

- A computed line list for formaldehyde, H_2_^12^C^16^O, applicable to temperatures up to T=1500K is presented. An empirical potential energy and ab initio dipole moment surfaces are used as the input to nuclear motion program TROVE. The resulting line list, referred to as AYTY, contains 10.3 million rotational-vibrational states and around 10 billion transition frequencies. Each transition includes associated Einstein- A coefficients and absolute transition intensities, for wavenumbers below 10000cm^-1^ and rotational excitations up to J=70. Room-temperature spectra are compared with laboratory measurements and data currently available in the HITRAN database. These spectra show excellent agreement with experimental spectra and highlight the gaps and limitations of the HITRAN data. - A comprehensive hot line list is calculated for ^31^PH_3_ in its ground electronic state. This line list, called SAlTY, contains almost 16.8 billion transitions between 7.5 million energy levels and it is suitable for simulating spectra up to temperatures of 1500K. It covers wavelengths longer than 1um and includes all transitions to upper states with energies below hc.18000cm^-1^ and rotational excitation up to J=46. The line list is computed by variational solution of the Schrodinger equation for the rotation-vibration motion employing the nuclear-motion program TROVE. A previously reported ab initio dipole moment surface is used as well as an updated 'spectroscopic' potential energy surface (PES), obtained by refining an existing ab initio surface through least-squares fitting to the experimentally derived energies. Detailed comparisons with other available sources of phosphine transitions confirms SAlTY's accuracy and illustrates the incompleteness of previous experimental and theoretical compilations for temperatures above 300K. Atmospheric models are expected to severely underestimate the abundance of phosphine in disequilibrium environments, and it is predicted that phosphine will be detectable in the upper troposphere of many substellar objects. This list is suitable for modelling atmospheres of many astrophysical environments, namely carbon stars, Y dwarfs, T dwarfs, hot Jupiters and solar system gas giant planets. - Accurate rotation-vibration line lists are calculated for silicon monoxide. Line lists are presented for the main isotopologue, ^28^Si^16^O, and four monosubstituted isotopologues ^29^Si^16^O, ^30^Si^16^O, ^28^Si^17^O and ^28^Si^18^O, in their ground electronic states. These line lists are suitable for high temperatures (up to 9000K) including those relevant to exoplanetary atmospheres and cool stars. A combination of empirical and ab initio methods is used: the potential energy curves are determined to high accuracy by fitting to extensive data from analysis of both laboratory and sunspot spectra; a high quality ab initio dipole moment curve is calculated at the large basis set, multi-reference configuration interaction (MRCI) level. - We have computed a grid of synthetic spectra in the wavelength range {lambda}{lambda}4600-5600{AA} using revised model atmospheres, for a range of atmospheric parameters and values of [alpha-elements/Fe]=0.0 and +0.4. The Lick indices Fe5270, Fe5335, Mgb and Mg_2_ are measured on the grid spectra, for FWHM=2 to 8.3{AA}. Relations between the indices Fe5270, Fe5335 and Mg_2_ and stellar parameters effective temperature T_eff_, logg, [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe], valid in the range 4000K>=T_eff_>=7000K, are presented. These fitting functions are given for FWHM=3.5 and 8.3{AA}. The indices were also measured for a list of 97 reference stars with well-known stellar parameters observed at ESO and OHP, and these are compared to the computed indices. Finally, a comparison of the indices measured on the observed spectra and those derived from the fitting functions based on synthetic spectra is presented.

- Limb darkening is a fundamental ingredient for interpreting observations of planetary transits, eclipsing binaries, optical/infrared interferometry and microlensing events. However, this modeling traditionally represents limb darkening by a simple law having one or two coefficients that have been derived from plane-parallel model stellar atmospheres, which has been done by many researchers. More recently, researchers have gone beyond plane-parallel models and considered other geometries. We previously studied the limb-darkening coefficients from spherically symmetric and plane-parallel model stellar atmospheres for cool giant and supergiant stars, and in this investigation we apply the same techniques to FGK dwarf stars. We present limb-darkening coefficients, gravity-darkening coefficients and interferometric angular diameter corrections from Atlas and SAtlas model stellar atmospheres. We find that sphericity is important even for dwarf model atmospheres, leading to significant differences in the predicted coefficients.
