- We present a spectroscopic analysis of white dwarfs found in the Kiso survey. Spectroscopic observations at high signal-to-noise ratio have been obtained for all DA and DB stars in the Kiso Schmidt ultraviolet excess survey (KUV stars). These observations led to the reclassification of several KUV objects, including the discovery of three unresolved DA+DB double-degenerate binaries. The atmospheric parameters (T_eff_ and logg) are obtained from detailed model atmosphere fits to optical spectroscopic data. The mass distribution of our sample is characterized by a mean value of 0.606M_{sun}_ and a dispersion of 0.135M_{sun}_ for DA stars, and 0.758M_{sun}_ and a dispersion of 0.192M_{sun}_ for DB stars. Absolute visual magnitudes obtained from our spectroscopic fits allow us to derive an improved luminosity function for the DA and DB stars identified in the Kiso survey. Our luminosity function is found to be significantly different from earlier estimates based on empirical photometric calibrations of M_V_ for the same sample. The results for the DA stars now appear entirely consistent with those obtained for the PG survey using the same spectroscopic approach. The space density for DA stars with M_V_<=12.75 is 2.80x10^-4^pc^-3^ in the Kiso survey, which is 9.6% smaller than the value found in the PG survey.

- We investigated the prospects for systematic searches of white dwarfs at low Galactic latitudes, using the VLT Survey Telescope H{alpha} Photometric Survey of the Galactic plane and Bulge (VPHAS+). We targeted 17 white dwarf candidates along sightlines of known open clusters, aiming to identify potential cluster members. We confirmed all the 17 white dwarf candidates from blue/optical spectroscopy, and we suggest five of them to be likely cluster members. We estimated progenitor ages and masses for the candidate cluster members, and compare our findings to those for other cluster white dwarfs. A white dwarf in NGC 3532 is the most massive known cluster member (1.13M_{sun}_), likely with an oxygen-neon core, for which we estimate an M_{sun}_ progenitor, close to the mass-divide between white dwarf and neutron star progenitors. A cluster member in Ruprecht 131 is a magnetic white dwarf, whose progenitor mass exceeded 2-3M_{sun}_. We stress that wider searches, and improved cluster distances and ages derived from data of the ESA Gaia mission, will advance the understanding of the mass-loss processes for low- to intermediate-mass stars.

- We describe an astrometric and spectroscopic campaign to confirm the youth and association of a complete sample of candidate wide companions in Taurus and Upper Sco. Our survey found 15 new binary systems (three in Taurus and 12 in Upper Sco) with separations of 3"-30" (500-5000AU) among all of the known members with masses of 2.5-0.012M_{sun}_. The total sample of 49 wide systems in these two regions conforms to only some expectations from field multiplicity surveys. Higher mass stars have a higher frequency of wide binary companions, and there is a marked paucity of wide binary systems near the substellar regime. However, the separation distribution appears to be log-flat, rather than declining as in the field, and the mass ratio distribution is more biased toward similar-mass companions than the initial mass function or the field G-dwarf distribution. The maximum separation also shows no evidence of a limit at <~5000AU until the abrupt cessation of any wide binary formation at system masses of ~0.3M_{sun}_. We attribute this result to the post-natal dynamical sculpting that occurs for most field systems; our binary systems will escape to the field intact, but most field stars are formed in denser clusters and undergo significant dynamical evolution. In summary, only wide binary systems with total masses <~0.3M_{sun}_ appear to be "unusually wide."

- Orbital angular momentum (OAM, Jo), systemic mass (M) and orbital period (P) distributions of chromospherically active binaries (CAB) and W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) systems were investigated. The diagrams of and logJo-logP, logM-logP and logJo-logM were formed from 119 CAB and 102 W UMa stars. The log Jo-logM diagram is found to be most meaningful in demonstrating dynamical evolution of binary star orbits. A slightly curved borderline (contact border) separating the detached and the contact systems was discovered on the logJo-logM diagram. Since the orbital size (a) and period (P) of binaries are determined by their current Jo, M and mass ratio, q, the rates of OAM loss (dlogJo/dt) and mass loss (dlogM/dt) are primary parameters to determine the direction and the speed of the dynamical evolution. A detached system becomes a contact system if its own dynamical evolution enables it to pass the contact border on the logJo-logM diagram. The evolution of q for a mass-losing detached system is unknown unless the mass-loss rate for each component is known. Assuming q is constant in the first approximation and using the mean decreasing rates of Jo and M from the kinematical ages of CAB stars, it has been predicted that 11, 23 and 39 per cent of current CAB stars would transform to W UMa systems if their nuclear evolution permits them to live 2, 4 and 6Gyr, respectively.

- Recently, our understanding of the origin of W UMa-type contact binaries has become clearer. Initial masses of their components were successfully estimated by Yildiz and Dogan using a new method mainly based on observational properties of overluminous secondary components. In this paper, we continue to discuss the results and make computations for age and orbital evolution of these binaries. It is shown that the secondary mass, according to its luminosity, also successfully predicts the observed radius. While the current mass of the primary component is determined by initial masses, the current secondary mass is also a function of initial angular momentum. We develop methods to compute the age of A- and W-subtype W UMa-type contact binaries in terms of initial masses and mass according to the luminosity of the secondaries. Comparisons of our results with the mean ages from kinematic properties of these binaries and data pertaining to contact binaries in open and globular clusters have increased our confidence on this method. The mean ages of both A- and W-subtype contact binaries are found as 4.4 and 4.6Gyr, respectively. From kinematic studies, these ages are given as 4.5 and 4.4Gyr, respectively. We also compute orbital properties of A-subtype contact binaries at the time of the first overflow. Initial angular momentum of these binaries is computed by comparing them with the well-known detached binaries. The angular momentum loss rate derived in the present study for the detached phase is in very good agreement with the semi-empirical rates available in the literature. In addition to the limitations on the initial masses of W UMa-type contact binaries, it is shown that the initial period of these binaries is less than about 4.45d.

- We use a 440.5ks Chandra observation of the ~500Myr old open cluster M37 to derive the X-ray luminosity functions of its <=1.2M_{sun}_ stars. Combining detections of 162 M37 members with upper limits for 160 non-detections, we find that its G, K, and M stars have a similar median (0.5-7keV) X-ray luminosity L_X_=10^29.0^erg/s, whereas the L_X_-to-bolometric-luminosity ratio (L_X_/L_bol_) indicates that M stars are more active than G and K stars by ~1 order of magnitude at 500Myr. To characterize the evolution of magnetic activity in low-mass stars over their first ~600Myr, we consolidate X-ray and optical data from the literature for stars in six other open clusters: from youngest to oldest they are, the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), NGC 2547, NGC 2516, the Pleiades, NGC 6475, and the Hyades. For these, we homogenize the conversion of instrumental count rates to L_X_ by applying the same one-temperature emission model as for M37, and obtain masses using the same empirical mass-absolute magnitude relation (except for the ONC). We find that for G and K stars X-ray activity decreases ~2 orders of magnitude over their first 600Myr, and for M stars, ~1.5. The decay rate of the median L_X_ follows the relation L_X_{propto}t^b^, where b=-0.61+/-0.12 for G stars, -0.82+/-0.16 for K stars, and -0.40+/-0.17 for M stars. In L_X_/L_bol_ space, the slopes are -0.68+/-0.12, -0.81+/-0.19, and -0.61+/-0.12, respectively. These results suggest that for low-mass stars the age-activity relation steepens after ~625Myr, consistent with the faster decay in activity observed in solar analogs at t>1Gyr.

- Empirical calibrations of the stellar age-rotation-activity relation (ARAR) rely on observations of the co-eval populations of stars in open clusters. We used the Chandra X-ray Observatory to study M37, a 500-Myr-old open cluster that has been extensively surveyed for rotation periods (P_rot_). M37 was observed almost continuously for five days, for a total of 440.5ks, to measure stellar X-ray luminosities (L_X_), a proxy for coronal activity, across a wide range of masses. The cluster's membership catalog was revisited to calculate updated membership probabilities from photometric data and each star's distance to the cluster center. The result is a comprehensive sample of 1699 M37 members: 426 with P_rot_, 278 with X-ray detections, and 76 with both. We calculate Rossby numbers, R_0_=P_rot_/{tau}, where {tau} is the convective turnover time, and ratios of the X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity, L_X_/L_bol_, to minimize mass dependencies in our characterization of the rotation-coronal activity relation at 500Myr. We find that fast rotators, for which R_0_<0.09+/-0.01, show saturated levels of activity, with log(L_X_/L_bol_)=-3.06+/-0.04. For R_0_>=0.09+/-0.01, activity is unsaturated and follows a power law of the form R_0_^{beta}^, where {beta}=-2.03^+0.17^_-1.14_. This is the largest sample available for analyzing the dependence of coronal emission on rotation for a single-aged population, covering stellar masses in the range 0.4-1.3M_{sun}_, P_rot_ in the range 0.4-12.8 days, and L_X_ in the range 10^28.4-30.5^erg/s. Our results make M37 a new benchmark open cluster for calibrating the ARAR at ages of ~500Myr.

- We use X-ray and infrared observations to study the properties of three classes of young stars in the Carina Nebula: intermediate-mass (2-5M{sun}) pre-main-sequence stars (IMPS; i.e., intermediate-mass T Tauri stars), late-B and A stars on the zero-age main sequence (AB), and lower-mass T Tauri stars (TTS). We divide our sources among these three subclassifications and further identify disk-bearing young stellar objects versus diskless sources with no detectable infrared (IR) excess emission using IR (1-8{mu}m) spectral energy distribution modeling. We then perform X-ray spectral fitting to determine the hydrogen-absorbing column density (N_H_), absorption-corrected X-ray luminosity (L_X_), and coronal plasma temperature (kT) for each source. We find that the X-ray spectra of both IMPS and TTS are characterized by similar kT and N_H_, and on average L_X_/L_bol_~4x10^-4^. IMPS are systematically more luminous in X-rays (by ~0.3dex) than all other subclassifications, with median L_X_=2.5x10^31^erg/s, while AB stars of similar masses have X-ray emission consistent with TTS companions. These lines of evidence converge on a magnetocoronal flaring source for IMPS X-ray emission, a scaled-up version of the TTS emission mechanism. IMPS therefore provide powerful probes of isochronal ages for the first ~10Myr in the evolution of a massive stellar population, because their intrinsic, coronal X-ray emission decays rapidly after they commence evolving along radiative tracks. We suggest that the most luminous (in both X-rays and IR) IMPS could be used to place empirical constraints on the location of the intermediate-mass stellar birth line.

- The Canis Major OB1 association has an intriguing scenario of star formation, especially in the region called Canis Major R1 (CMa R1) traditionally assigned to a reflection nebula, but in reality an ionized region. This work is focussed on the young stellar population associated with CMa R1, for which our previous results from ROSAT, optical, and near-infrared data had revealed two stellar groups with different ages, suggesting a possible mixing of populations originated from distinct star formation episodes. The X-ray data allow the detected sources to be characterized according to hardness ratios, light curves, and spectra. Estimates of mass and age were obtained from the 2MASS catalogue and used to define a complete subsample of stellar counterparts for statistical purposes. A catalogue of 387 XMM-Newton sources is provided, of which 78% are confirmed as members or probable members of the CMa R1 association. Flares (or similar events) were observed for 13 sources and the spectra of 21 bright sources could be fitted by a thermal plasma model. Mean values of fits parameters were used to estimate X-ray luminosities. We found a minimum value of log(L_X_[erg/s])=29.43, indicating that our sample of low-mass stars (M*<=0.5 M_{sun}_), which are faint X-ray emitters, is incomplete. Among the 250 objects selected as our complete subsample (defining our "best sample"), 171 are found to the east of the cloud, near Z CMa and dense molecular gas, of which 50% of them are young (<5Myr) and 30% are older (>10Myr). The opposite happens to the west, near GU CMa, in areas lacking molecular gas: among 79 objects, 30% are young and 50% are older. These findings confirm that a first episode of distributed star formation occurred in the whole studied region ~10Myr ago and dispersed the molecular gas, while a second, localized episode (<5Myr) took place in the regions where molecular gas is still present.

- The orbits of eight systems with low-mass components (HIP14524, HIP16025, HIP28671, HIP46199, HIP47791, HIP60444, HIP61100, and HIP73085) are presented. Speckle interferometric data were obtained at the 6m Big Telescope Alt-azimuth Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (BTA SAO RAS) from 2007 to 2019. New data, together with measures already in the literature, made it possible to improve upon previous orbital solutions in six cases and to construct orbits for the first time in the two remaining cases (HIP14524 and HIP60444). Mass sums are obtained using both Hipparcos and Gaia parallaxes, and a comparison with previously published values is made. Using the Worley & Heintz criteria, the classification of the orbits constructed is carried out.
