- We describe redMaPPer, a new red sequence cluster finder specifically designed to make optimal use of ongoing and near-future large photometric surveys. The algorithm has multiple attractive features: (1) it can iteratively self-train the red sequence model based on a minimal spectroscopic training sample, an important feature for high-redshift surveys. (2) It can handle complex masks with varying depth. (3) It produces cluster-appropriate random points to enable large-scale structure studies. (4) All clusters are assigned a full redshift probability distribution P(z). (5) Similarly, clusters can have multiple candidate central galaxies, each with corresponding centering probabilities. (6) The algorithm is parallel and numerically efficient: it can run a Dark Energy Survey-like catalog in ~500 CPU hours. (7) The algorithm exhibits excellent photometric redshift performance, the richness estimates are tightly correlated with external mass proxies, and the completeness and purity of the corresponding catalogs are superb. We apply the redMaPPer algorithm to ~10000deg^2^ of SDSS DR8 data and present the resulting catalog of ~25000 clusters over the redshift range z{isin}[0.08,0.55]. The redMaPPer photometric redshifts are nearly Gaussian, with a scatter {sigma}_z_~0.006 at z~0.1, increasing to {sigma}_z_~0.02 at z~0.5 due to increased photometric noise near the survey limit. The median value for |{Delta}z|/(1+z) for the full sample is 0.006. The incidence of projection effects is low (<= 5%). Detailed performance comparisons of the redMaPPer DR8 cluster catalog to X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich catalogs are presented in a companion paper.

- The Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (RCS) is a ~100{deg}^2^, two-filter imaging survey in the R_C_ and z' filters, designed primarily to locate and characterize galaxy clusters to redshifts as high as z=1.4. This paper provides a detailed description of the survey strategy and execution, including a thorough discussion of the photometric and astrometric calibration of the survey data. These catalogs, representing about 10% of the total survey and comprising a total of 429 candidate clusters and groups, contain a total of 67 cluster candidates at a photometric redshift of 0.9<z<1.4, down to the chosen significance threshold of 3.29{sigma}.

- This paper prepares a series of papers analysing the Intermediate MAss Galaxy Evolution Sequence (IMAGES) up to a redshift of one. Intermediate mass galaxies (M_J<=-20.3) are selected from the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) for which we identify a serious lack of spectroscopically determined redshifts. Our primary aim in this study is therefore to obtain a sample of intermediate-mass galaxies with known spectroscopic redshift to be used for further analysis of their 3D-kinematics. We also intend to test whether this important cosmological field may be significantly affected by cosmic variance. The spectroscopic observations were carried out using VIMOS on the ESO VLT. The data reduction was done using a set of semi-automatic IRAF procedures developed by our team. We have spectroscopically identified 691 objects including 580 galaxies, 7 QSOs, and 104 stars.

- This paper presents the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey around the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). We have measured 1599 new redshifts with VIMOS on the European Observatory Very Large Telescope - UT3, in an area 21x21.6arcmin^2^, including 784 redshifts in the Hubble Space Telescope - Advanced Camera for Surveys GOODS area. 30% of all objects with I_AB_=24 have been observed independently of magnitude, indicating that the sample is purely magnitude limited. We have reached an unprecedented completeness level of 84% in terms of the ratio of secure measurements vs. observed objects, while 95% of all objects have a redshift measurement. A total of 1452 galaxies, 139 stars, 8 QSOs have a redshift identification, 141 of these being unsecure measurements. The redshift distribution down to IAB=24 is peaked at a median redshift z=0.73, with a significant high redshift tail extending up to ~4. Several high density peaks in the distribution of galaxies are identified. In particular, the strong peak at z=0.735 contains more than 130 galaxies in a velocity range +/-2000km/s distributed all across the transverse ~20h^-1^Mpc of the survey. We are releasing all redshifts to the community, along with the cross identification with HST-ACS GOODS sources on the CENCOS database environment http://cencosw.oamp.fr .

- The Century Survey strip covers 102{deg}^2^ within the limits 8.5h<=RA<=16.5h, 29.0{deg}<=DE<=30.0{deg}, equinox B1950.0. The strip passes through the Corona Borealis supercluster and the outer region of the Coma cluster. Within the Century Survey region, we have measured 2410 redshifts that constitute four overlapping complete redshift surveys: (1) the original Century Survey of 1728 galaxies with Kron-Cousins (Kron, White, & Gascoigne, 1953ApJ...118..502K) R_ph_<=16.13 covering the entire strip (Geller et al., 1997AJ....114.2205G, hereafter OCS), (2) 507 galaxies with R_ph_<=16.4 in right ascension range 8h32min<=RA<=10h45min, equinox B1950.0, (hereafter DCS) (3) 1251 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected R_CCDc_<=16.2 (where "c" indicates "corrected") covering the right ascension range 8.5h<=RA<=13.5h, equinox B1950.0 (Brown et al., 2001, Cat. <J/AJ/122/714>, hereafter RCS), and (4) 1255 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected V_CCDc_<=16.7 also covering the right ascension range 8.5h<=RA<=13.5h, B1950.0 (Brown et al., 2001, Cat. <J/AJ/122/714>, hereafter VCS). All these redshift samples are more than 98% complete to the specified magnitude limit. We derived samples 1 and 2 from scans of the POSS1 red (E) plates calibrated with CCD photometry. We derived samples 3 and 4 from deep V and R CCD images covering the entire region. We include coarse morphological types for all the galaxies in sample 1. The distribution of (V-R)_CCD_ for each type corresponds appropriately with the classification.

- Redshifts of a sample of distant Abell clusters

- We have measured redshifts for a complete sample of 145 Abell clusters of galaxies. The sample covers a 561 square degree region at high Galactic latitude. The median redshift of the clusters in the sample is 0.16. For R >= 1 clusters the correlation length is r_0_ = 21 h^-1^ Mpc. The amplitude of the correlation function is a factor of 1.4 less than that obtained by Bahcall and Soneira, but the difference is within the 1 {sigma} uncertainties. In this sample we cannot detect clustering on scales >~ 70 h^-1^ Mpc. Although the maps of the cluster distribution in redshift space show a large void of diameter ~20,000 km s^-1^, frequent occurrence of such large empty regions is consistent with the smaller scale behaviour of the correlation function of the survey. Large-scale peculiar motions are <~1000 km s^-1^. This limit is inconsistent with the claim of detection by Bahcall, Soneira, and Burgett of ~2000 km/s peculiar motions. We suggest that the earlier result is affected by the Corona Borealis supercluster, which contributes more than a third of the excess pairs in the shallower survey.

- We use a dense redshift survey in the foreground of the Subaru GTO2deg^2^ weak-lensing field (centered at 16:04:44+43:11'24 (2000) to assess the completeness and comment on the purity of massive halo identification in the weak-lensing map. The redshift survey (published here) includes 4541 galaxies; 4405 are new redshifts measured with the Hectospec on the MMT. Among the weak-lensing peaks with a signal to noise greater than 4.25, 2/3 correspond to individual massive systems; this result is essentially identical to the Geller et al. (2010ApJ...709..832G) test of the Deep Lens Survey (DLS) field F2. The Subaru map, based on images in substantially better seeing than the DLS, enables detection of less massive halos at fixed redshift as expected. We demonstrate that the procedure adopted by Miyazaki et al. (2002ApJ...580L..97M) for removing some contaminated peaks from the weak-lensing map improves agreement between the lensing map and the redshift survey in the identification of candidate massive systems.

- We present spectroscopic redshifts of S_870{mu}m_>~2mJy submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), which have been identified from the ALMA follow-up observations of 870{mu}m detected sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (the ALMA-LESS survey). We derive spectroscopic redshifts for 52 SMGs, with a median of z=2.4+/-0.1. However, the distribution features a high-redshift tail, with ~23% of the SMGs at z>=3. Spectral diagnostics suggest that the SMGs are young starbursts, and the velocity offsets between the nebular emission and UV ISM absorption lines suggest that many are driving winds, with velocity offsets of up to 2000km/s. Using the spectroscopic redshifts and the extensive UV-to-radio photometry in this field, we produce optimized spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using Magphys, and use the SEDs to infer a median stellar mass of M_*_=(6+/-1)x10^10^M_{sun}_ for our SMGs with spectroscopic redshift. By combining these stellar masses with the star formation rates (measured from the far-infrared SEDs), we show that SMGs (on average) lie a factor of ~5 above the so-called "main sequence" at z~2. We provide this library of 52 template fits with robust and uniquely well-sampled SEDs as a resource for future studies of SMGs, and also release the spectroscopic catalog of ~2000 (mostly infrared-selected) galaxies targeted as part of the spectroscopic campaign.

- We study the rotational motion of the galaxy cluster A2107 at redshift z=0.04 and its connection to nearby large-scale structures using a large amount of spectroscopic redshift data. By combining 978 new redshifts from the MMT/Hectospec observations with data in the literature, we construct a large sample of 1968 galaxies with measured redshifts at clustercentric radius R<60'. Our sample has high (80%) and spatially uniform completeness at r-band apparent magnitude m_r,Petro,0_<19.1. We first apply the caustic method to the sample and identify 285 member galaxies of A2107 at R<60'. Then the rotation amplitude and the position angle of the rotation axis are measured. We find that the member galaxies show strong global rotation at R<20' (v_rot_/{sigma}_v_~0.6) with a significance of >3.8{sigma}, which is confirmed by two independent methods. The rotation becomes weaker in outer regions. There are at least five filamentary structures that are connected to the cluster and that consist of known galaxy groups. These structures are smoothly connected to the cluster, which seem to be inducing the global rotation of the cluster through inflow of galaxies.
