- We have obtained or retrieved IUE spectra for over 100 middle- and late-type giant and supergiant stars whose spectra indicate the presence of a hot component earlier than type F2. The hot companions are classified accurately by temperature class from their far-UV spectra. The interstellar extinction of each system and the relative luminosities of the components are derived from analysis of the UV and optical fluxes, using a grid of UV intrinsic colors for hot dwarfs. We find that there is fair agreement in general between current UV spectral classification and ground-based hot component types, in spite of the difficulties of assigning the latter. There are a few cases in which the cool component optical classifications disagree considerably with the temperature classes inferred from our analysis of UV and optical photometry. The extinction parameter agrees moderately well with other determinations of B-V color excess. Many systems are worthy of further study especially to establish their spectroscopic orbits. Further work is planned to estimate luminosities of the cool components from the data herein; in many cases, these luminosities' accuracies should be comparable to or exceed those of the Hipparcos parallaxes.

- An analysis of the stars included in the catalogue of {lambda} Bootis stars by Paunzen et al. (1997, Cat. <J/A+AS/123/93>) and which also have IUE observations is presented here. Population I A-F type stars as well as field horizontal branch stars were also included in the analysis. Using line-ratios of carbon to heavier elements (Al and Ni) allows us to establish unambiguous membership criteria for the {lambda} Bootis group.

- We measure Galactic interstellar neutral hydrogen column densities by analyzing archival interstellar Ly{alpha} absorption line data toward 554 B2 and hotter stars observed at high resolution with the IUE satellite. This study more than doubles the number of lines of sight with measures of N(H I) based on Ly{alpha}. We have included the scattered light background correction algorithm of Bianchi and Bohlin (1984A&A...134...31B) in our data reduction. We use the correlation between the Balmer discontinuity [c_1_] index and the stellar Ly{alpha} absorption in order to assess the effects of stellar Ly alpha contamination. Approximately 40% of the B stars with measured [c_1_] index, exhibit serious stellar Ly{alpha} contamination. Table 1 contains the derived values of the interstellar N(H I) for 393 stars with at most small amounts of stellar contamination. Table 2 lists the observed values of total N(H I) for 161 stars with suspected stellar Ly alpha contamination and/or uncertain stellar parameters.

- Main-sequence stars exhibit a clear rotation-activity relationship, in which rapidly rotating stars drive strong chromospheric/coronal ultraviolet and X-ray emission. While the vast majority of red giant stars are inactive, a few percent exhibit strong ultraviolet emission. Here we use a sample of 133 red giant stars observed by Sloan Digital Sky Survey APOGEE and Galaxy Evolution Explorer to demonstrate an empirical relationship between near-UV (NUV) excess and rotational velocity (vsini). Beyond this simple relationship, we find that NUV excess also correlates with rotation period and with Rossby number in a manner that shares broadly similar trends to those found in M dwarfs, including activity saturation among rapid rotators. Our data also suggest that the most extremely rapidly rotating giants may exhibit so-called supersaturation, which could be caused by centrifugal stripping of these stars rotating at a high fraction of breakup speed. As an example application of our empirical rotation-activity relation, we demonstrate that the NUV emission observed from a recently reported system comprising a red giant with a black hole companion is fully consistent with arising from the rapidly rotating red giant in that system. Most fundamentally, our findings suggest a common origin of chromospheric activity in rotation and convection for cool stars from main sequence to red giant stages of evolution.

- We present the photometric determination of the bright-end of the Ly{alpha} luminosity function (at L_Ly{alpha}_>~10^43.5^erg/s) within four redshifts windows ({Delta}z<0.16) in the interval 2.2<~z<~3.3. Our work is based on the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) first data-release, which provides multiple narrow-band measurements over ~1000deg^2^, with limiting magnitude ~22. Theanalysis of high-z Ly{alpha}-emitting sources over such a wide area is unprecedented, and allows to select a total of ~14500 hyper-bright(L_Ly{alpha}_>10^43.3^erg/s) Ly{alpha}-emitting candidates. We test our selection with two spectroscopic follow-up programs at the GTC telescope,which confirm as line-emitting sources ~89% of the targets, with ~64% being genuine z~2.2 QSOs. We extend the 2.2<~z<~3.3 Ly{alpha} luminosity function for the first time above L_Ly{alpha}_~10^44^erg/s and down to densities of ~10^-8^Mpc^-3^. Our results unveil with high detail the Schechter exponential-decay of the brightest-end of the Ly{alpha} LF, complementing the power-law component of previous LF determinations at 43.3<~Log10(L_Ly{alpha}_/(erg/s))<~44. We measure {PHI}*=(3.33+/-0.19)x10^-6^, Log(L*)=44.65+/-0.65 and {alpha}=-1.35+/-0.84 as an average over the redshifts we probe. These values are significantly different than the typical Schechter parameters measured for the Ly{alpha} LF of high-z star-forming LAEs. This suggests that z>2 AGN/QSOs (likely dominant in our samples) are described by a structurally different LF than z>2 star-forming LAEs, namely with L*_QSOs_~100 L*_LAEs_ and {PHI}*_QSOs_~10^-3^{PHI}*_LAEs_. Finally, our method identifies very efficiently as high-z line-emitters sources without previous spectroscopic confirmation, currently classified as stars (~2000 objects in each redshift bin, on average). Assuming a large predominance of Ly{alpha}-emitting AGN/QSOs in our samples, this supports the scenario by which these are the most abundant class of z>~2 Ly{alpha} emitters at L_Ly{alpha}_>~10^43.3^erg/s.

- The entire KG (KG) catalog is presented which combines extensive new measurements of their optical parameters with a literature and database search. The measurements were made using images extracted from the STScI Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) of Jpg(blue), Fpg(red) and Ipg(NIR) band photographic sky survey plates obtained by the Palomar and UK Schmidt telescopes. We provide accurate coordinates, morphological type, spectral and activity classes, blue apparent diameters, axial ratios, position angles, red, blue and NIR apparent magnitudes, as well as counts of neighboring objects in a circle of radius 50kpc from centers of KG. Special attention was paid to the individual descriptions of the galaxies in the original Kazarian lists, which clarified many cases of misidentifications of the objects, particularly among interacting systems. The total number of individual Kazarian objects in the database is now 706. We also include the redshifts which are now available for 404 galaxies, and the 2MASS infrared magnitudes for 598 KG. The database also includes extensive notes, which summarize information about the membership of KG in different systems of galaxies, and about revised activity classes and redshifts. An atlas of several interesting subclasses of KG is also presented.

- We report results from a pilot program to obtain spectroscopy for objects detected in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Medium Imaging Survey (MIS). Our study examines the properties of galaxies detected by GALEX fainter than the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic survey. This is the first study to extend the techniques of Salim and coworkers to estimate stellar masses, star formation rates (SFRs), and the b (star formation history) parameter for star-forming galaxies out to z~0.7. We obtain redshifts for 50 GALEX MIS sources reaching NUV=23.9 (AB mag) having counterparts in the SDSS Data Release 4 (DR4). Of our sample, 43 are star-forming galaxies with z<0.7, 3 have emission-line ratios indicative of active galactic nuclei with z<0.7, and 4 objects with z>1 are QSOs, 3 of which are not previously cataloged. We compare our sample to a much larger sample of ~50000 matched GALEX/SDSS galaxies with SDSS spectroscopy; while our survey is shallow, the optical counterparts to our sources reach ~3mag fainter in SDSS r than the SDSS spectroscopic sample. We use emission-line diagnostics for the galaxies to determine that the sample contains mostly star-forming galaxies.

- We present results of a deep spectroscopic survey quantifying the statistics of the escape of ionizing radiation from star-forming galaxies at z~3. We measure the ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density <f_900_/f_1500_>_obs_, where f_900_ is the mean flux density evaluated over the range [880,910]{AA}. We quantify the emergent ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density by analyzing high signal-to-noise ratio composite spectra formed from subsamples with common observed properties and numbers sufficient to reduce the statistical uncertainty in the modeled IGM+CGM correction to obtain precise values of <f_900_/f_1500_>_out_, including a full-sample average <f_900_/f_1500>_out_=0.057{+/-}0.006. We show that <f_900_/f_1500_>_out_ increases monotonically with W_{lambda}_(Ly{alpha}), inducing an inverse correlation with UV luminosity as a by-product. We fit the composite spectra using stellar spectral synthesis together with models of the ISM in which a fraction f_c_ of the stellar continuum is covered by gas with column density N_HI_. We show that the composite spectra simultaneously constrain the intrinsic properties of the stars (L_900_/L_1500_)_int_ along with f_c_, N_HI_, E(B-V), and f_esc,abs_, the absolute escape fraction of ionizing photons. We find a sample-averaged f_esc,abs_=0.09{+/-}0.01, with subsamples falling along a linear relation <f_esc,abs_>~0.75[W_{lambda}_(Ly{alpha})/110{AA}]. Using the far-UV luminosity function, the distribution function n(W(Ly{alpha})), and the relationship between W_{lambda}_(Ly{alpha}) and <f_900_/f_1500_>_out_, we estimate the total ionizing emissivity of z~3 star-forming galaxies with M_uv_<=-19.5, which exceeds the contribution of quasi-stellar objects by a factor of ~3, and accounts for ~50% of the total {epsilon}LyC at z~3 estimated using indirect methods.

- A catalog of kink oscillations of solar coronal loops, which spans during almost all of solar cycle 24, is presented. The catalog is based on the observations made in the extreme ultraviolet band at 171{AA} with Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly and includes parameters of 223 oscillating loops in 96 oscillation events. The catalog provides the information about the oscillation locations, time, and dates of the events, associated flare, initial displacement, oscillation period, exponential damping time, and apparent amplitude. The vast majority of the oscillation detections, 84%, were made in the loops situated near or off the solar limb. The oscillation periods are found to range from 1 to 28 minutes, with 74% of the events that have the period in the range of 2-10 minutes. About 90% of the oscillations have the apparent amplitude in the range of 1-10Mm. The oscillating loop lengths are 70-600 Mm. The typical apparent amplitude is about 1% of the loop length. The oscillation period scales linearly with the loop length, and the damping time scales linearly with the period, which confirm previous findings. The oscillation quality factor scales with the amplitude to the power of minus 0.7. No statistically significant evidence of correlation was found between both the oscillation period and the mean sunspot number, and the loop length and mean sunspot number. The catalog provides the research community with the foundation for the further statistical study of kink oscillations and their use for coronal seismology.
