- Description:
- The interaction of galaxies with their environment plays an important role in their evolution. Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have been found in large numbers in clusters. We detected a few star forming blobs in the VESTIGE survey, located at ~5kpc from a UDG, namely NGVS 3543, in association with an HI gas cloud AGC 226178, suggesting a recent interaction of this low surface brightness system with the surrounding cluster environment. We use a complete set of multi-frequency data including deep optical, UV, and narrow- band H{alpha} imaging and HI data to understand the formation process which gave birth to this peculiar system. For this purpose, we measured: i) multi-wavelength radial surface brightness profiles of NGVS 3543 and compared them to the predictions of spectro-photometric models of galaxy evolution in rich clusters, ii) aperture photometry of the blue regions in the vicinity of NGVS 3543 in order to determine their age and stellar mass. The comparison of the observations with the evolutionary models indicate that the NGVS 3543 has undergone a ram-pressure stripping (RPS) that peaked ~100Myr ago, transforming a blue gas-rich UDG into a red gas-poor UDG. Star formation has taken place in the ram pressure stripped gas, whose mass is ~10^8^M_{sun}_, forming star complexes of typical age ~20Myr and stellar mass ~10^4^M_{sun}_. These results suggest that we are observing for the first time the ongoing transformation of a gas-rich UDG into a red and quiescent UDG under the effect of a ram-pressure stripping event. The same process could thus explain the lack of star forming UDGs in rich environments observed in several nearby clusters.

- NUV-J colours of red-sequence galaxies

- Description:
- We present GALEX near-ultraviolet (NUV) and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey J-band photometry for red-sequence galaxies in local clusters. We define quiescent samples according to a strict emission threshold, removing galaxies with very recent star formation. We analyse the NUVJ colour-magnitude relation (CMR) and find that the intrinsic scatter is an order of magnitude larger than for the analogous optical CMR (~0.35 rather than 0.05mag), in agreement with previous studies. Comparing the NUVJ colours with spectroscopically derived stellar population parameters, we find a strong (>5.5sigma) correlation with metallicity, only a marginal trend with age, and no correlation with the alpha/Fe ratio. We explore the origin of the large scatter and conclude that neither aperture effects nor the UV upturn phenomenon contribute significantly. We show that the scatter could be attributed to simple 'frosting' by either a young or a low-metallicity subpopulation.

- NUV sources in CDF-S and HDF-N GOODS fields
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We present an ultraviolet-selected sample of 268 objects in the two fields of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). We used the parallel observations taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in the U band (F300W), which covered 88% of the GOODS fields, to identify sources and selected only objects with GOODS Advanced Camera for Surveys counterparts. Spectroscopic redshifts for 95 of these sources are available, and we have used the multiwavelength GOODS data to estimate photometric redshifts for the others. Most of the objects have redshifts 0.2<z<0.8. We used the spectral types obtained by photometric redshift fitting to identify starburst galaxies. We have also visually checked all objects and looked for tidal effects and nearby companions.

- Description:
- The catalog from the first high-resolution U-band image of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, taken with Hubble's Wide-Field Planetary Camera 2 through the F300W filter, is presented. We detect 96 U-band objects and compare and combine this catalog with a Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey B-selected catalog that provides B, V, i, and z photometry, spectral types, and photometric redshifts. We have also obtained far-ultraviolet (FUV, 1614{AA}) data with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys Solar Blind Channel (ACS/SBC) and with GALEX. We detected 31 sources with ACS/SBC, 28 with GALEX/FUV, and 45 with GALEX/NUV. The methods of observations, image processing, object identification, catalog preparation, and catalog matching are presented.

- NUV spectrum of eta Car in 2003.5
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/168/289
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST STIS) near-ultraviolet (NUV) echelle spectra reveal complex structure in the sight line toward the Weigelt D condensation located 0.25" north-northwest of {eta} Car. This analysis uses data recorded between 2000 October and 2004 March to monitor changes in emission and absorption as the UV photoexciting fluxes from {eta} Car drop and later reappear. We compare changes in the wind profiles seen against the star and the CS absorptions to gain knowledge of the properties of the extended wind and the ejecta. Complete spectra, in the wavelength region 2424-2706{AA}, with line identifications are available in the electronic edition of this paper.

- Observations of H II Regions in M81
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/438/181
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Images of the type Sab spiral galaxy M81 were obtained in far-UV and near-UV bands by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-1 Spacelab mission of 1990 December. Magnitudes in the two UV bands are determined for 52 H II regions from the catalog of Petit, Sivan, & Karachentsev (1988A&AS...74..475P). Fluxes of the H-alpha and H-beta emission lines are determined from CCD images. Extinctions for the brightest H II regions are determined from observed Balmer decrements. Fainter H II regions are assigned the average of published radio-H-alpha extinctions for several bright H II regions. The radiative transfer models of Witt, Thronson, & Capuano (1992, ApJ, 393, 611) are shown to predict a relationship between Balmer Decrement and H-alpha extinction consistent with observed line and radio fluxes for the brightest 7 H II regions and are used to estimate the UV extinction. Ratios of Lyman continuum flux (computed from the extinction corrected H-alpha flux) to the extinction corrected far-UV flux are compared with ratios predicted by model spectra computed for IMF slope equal to -1.0 and stellar masses ranging from 5 to 120 Msun. Ages and masses are estimated by comparing the H-alpha and far-UV fluxes and their ratio with the models. The total of the estimated stellar masses for the 52 H II regions is 1.4x10^5^ Msun. The star-formation rate inferred for M81 from the observed UV and H-alpha fluxes is low for a spiral galaxy at ~0.13 Msun/yr, but consistent with the low star-formation rates obtained by Kennicutt (1983ApJ...272...54K) and Caldwell et al. (1991ApJ...370..526C) for early-type spirals.

- OI, GeII, KrI & H abundances from HST UV spectra

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In a survey of archived ultraviolet spectra of 100 stars recorded by the echelle spectrograph of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, we measure the strengths of the weak absorption features of OI, GeII, and KrI in the interstellar medium. Our objective is to undertake an investigation that goes beyond earlier abundance studies to see how these elements are influenced independently by three different environmental properties: (1) values of a generalized atomic depletion factor F_*_ due to condensations onto dust grains (revealed here by the abundances of Mg and Mn relative to H), (2) the fraction of H atoms in the form of H_2_/f(H_2_), and (3) the ambient intensity I of ultraviolet starlight relative to an average value in our part of the Galaxy I_0_. As expected, the gas-phase abundances of all three elements exhibit negative partial correlations with F*. The abundances of free O atoms show significant positive partial correlations with logf(H_2_) and log(I/I_0_), while Ge and Kr exhibit negative partial correlations with log(I/I_0_) at marginal levels of significance. After correcting for these trends, the abundances of O relative to H show no significant variations with location, except for the already-known radial gradient of light-element abundances in the Milky Way. A comparison of Ge and O abundances revealed no significant regional enhancements or deficiencies of neutron-capture elements relative to {alpha}-process ones.

- O(3P) + H2(v, j)-->OH + H:OH reactions

- Description:
- The reaction between atomic oxygen and molecular hydrogen is an important one in astrochemistry as it regulates the abundance of the hydroxyl radical and serves to open the chemistry of oxygen in diverse astronomical environments. However, the existence of a high activation barrier in the reaction with ground state oxygen atoms limits its efficiency in cold gas. In this study we calculate the dependence of the reaction rate coefficient on the rotational and vibrational state of H_2_ and evaluate the impact on the abundance of OH in interstellar regions strongly irradiated by far-UV photons, where H_2_ can be efficiently pumped to excited vibrational states. We use a recently calculated potential energy surface and carry out time-independent quantum mechanical scattering calculations to compute rate coefficients for the reaction O(^3^P)+H_2_(v,j)-->OH+H, with H_2_ in vibrational states v=0-7 and rotational states j=0-10. We find that the reaction becomes significantly faster with increasing vibrational quantum number of H_2_, although even for high vibrational states of H_2_ (v=4-5) for which the reaction is barrierless, the rate coefficient does not strictly attain the collision limit and still maintains a positive dependence with temperature. We implemented the calculated state-specific rate coefficients in the Meudon PDR code to model the Orion Bar PDR and evaluate the impact on the abundance of the OH radical. We find the fractional abundance of OH is enhanced by up to one order of magnitude in regions of the cloud corresponding to AV=1.3-2.3, compared to the use of a thermal rate coefficient for O+H_2_, although the impact on the column density of OH is modest, of about 60%. The calculated rate coefficients will be useful to model and interpret JWST observations of OH in strongly UV-illuminated environments.
