- We measure the distribution of carbon in the intergalactic medium as a function of redshift z and overdensity {delta}. Using a hydrodynamical simulation to link the H I absorption to the density and temperature of the absorbing gas, and a model for the UV background radiation, we convert ratios of C IV to H I pixel optical depths into carbon abundances. For the median metallicity this technique was described and tested in Paper I (Aguirre et al., 2002ApJ...576....1A) of this series. Here we generalize it to reconstruct the full probability distribution of the carbon abundance and apply it to 19 high-quality quasar absorption spectra.

- Among the different observational techniques used to select high-redshift galaxies, the hydrogen recombination line Lyman-alpha (Ly{alpha}) is of particular interest because it gives access to the measurement of cosmological quantities such as the star formation rate (SFR) of distant galaxy populations. However, interpreting this line and calibrating such observables are still subject to serious uncertainties. In this context, it important to understand the mechanisms responsible for the attenuation of Ly{alpha} emission, and under what conditions the Ly{alpha} emission line can be used as a reliable star formation diagnostic tool. We used a sample of 24 Ly{alpha} emitters at z~0.3 with an optical spectroscopic follow-up to calculate the Ly{alpha} escape fraction and its dependence upon different physical properties. We also examined the reliability of Ly{alpha} as a SFR indicator. We combined these observations with a compilation of Ly{alpha} emitters selected at z=0-0.3 from the literature to assemble a larger sample.

- We present multiwavelength observations of the tidal disruption event (TDE) iPTF15af, discovered by the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory survey at redshift z=0.07897. The optical and ultraviolet (UV) light curves of the transient show a slow decay over 5 months, in agreement with previous optically discovered TDEs. It also has a comparable blackbody peak luminosity of L_peak_~1.5x10^44^erg/s. The inferred temperature from the optical and UV data shows a value of (3-5)x10^4^K. The transient is not detected in X-rays up to L_X_<3x10^42^erg/s within the first 5 months after discovery. The optical spectra exhibit two distinct broad emission lines in the HeII region, and at later times also H{alpha} emission. Additionally, emission from [NIII] and [OIII] is detected, likely produced by the Bowen fluorescence effect. UV spectra reveal broad emission and absorption lines associated with high-ionization states of NV, CIV, SiIV, and possibly PV. These features, analogous to those of broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs), require an absorber with column densities N_H_>10^23^cm^-2^. This optically thick gas would also explain the nondetection in soft X-rays. The profile of the absorption lines with the highest column density material at the largest velocity is opposite that of BAL QSOs. We suggest that radiation pressure generated by the TDE flare at early times could have provided the initial acceleration mechanism for this gas. Spectral UV line monitoring of future TDEs could test this proposal.

- We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the O VI {lambda}{lambda}1031.926, 1037.617 absorption lines associated with gas in and near the Milky Way, as detected in the spectra of a sample of 100 extragalactic targets and two distant halo stars. We combine data from several FUSE Science Team programs with guest observer data that were public before 2002 May 1. The sight lines cover most of the sky above Galactic latitude |b|>25{deg}, at lower latitude the ultraviolet extinction is usually too large for extragalactic observations.

- We have obtained deep multiobject optical spectra of 49 HII regions in the outer disk of the spiral galaxy M83 (=NGC 5236) with the FORS2 spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. The targets span the range in galactocentric distance between 0.64 and 2.64 times the R_25_ isophotal radius (5.4-22.3kpc), and 31 of them are located at R>R_25_, thus belonging to the extreme outer disk of the galaxy, populated by UV complexes revealed recently by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer satellite. In order to derive the nebular chemical abundances, we apply several diagnostics of the oxygen abundance, including R_23_, [NII]/[OII], and the [OIII]{lambda}4363 auroral line, which was detected in four HII regions.

- The Palomar-Green Catalogue of UV-excess stellar objects provides positions accurate to about 8arcsec in each coordinate, photographic B-magnitudes accurate to 0.29mag, spectral types, some cross-references, and photoelectric broad-band, multichannel, and Stroemgren colors when available. Of the 1874 objects in the catalogue as published in 1986 (1878 in this version), 1715 comprise a statistically complete sample covering 10714 square degrees from 266 fields taken on the Palomar 18-inch Schmidt telescope. Limiting magnitudes vary from field to field, ranging from 15.49 to 16.67. The overall completeness is estimated to be 84%, but that figure and the relative contributions of magnitude, color, and accidental errors vary depending on the magnitude and color distribution of the spectroscopic subsample.

- The stellar, gaseous and young stellar disks in the LITTLE THINGS sample of nearby dwarf irregular galaxies are fitted with functions to search for correlations between the parameters. We find that the HI radial profiles are generally flatter in the center and fall faster in the outer regions than the V-band profiles, while young stars are more centrally concentrated, especially if the HI is more centrally flat. This pattern suggests that the HI is turning into molecules in the center, and the molecular clouds are forming stars and FUV. A model that assumes the molecular surface density is proportional to the total gas surface density to a power of 1.5 or 2, in analogy with the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation, reproduces the relationship between the ratio of the visible to the HI scale length and the HI Sersic index. The molecular fraction is estimated as a function of radius for each galaxy by converting the FUV to a molecular surface density using conventional calibrations. The average molecular fraction inside 3RD is 23%{+/-}17%. However, the break in the stellar surface brightness profile has no unified tracer related to star formation.

- We have measured stellar photometry with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys in near ultraviolet (F275W, F336W), optical (F475W, F814W), and near infrared (F110W, F160W) bands for 117 million resolved stars in M31. As part of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury survey, we measured photometry with simultaneous point-spread function (PSF) fitting across all bands and at all source positions after precise astrometric image alignment (<5-10mas accuracy). In the outer disk, the photometry reaches a completeness-limited depth of F475W~28, while in the crowded, high surface brightness bulge, the photometry reaches F475W~25. We find that simultaneous photometry and optimized measurement parameters significantly increase the detection limit of the lowest-resolution filters (WFC3/IR) providing color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) that are up to 2.5mag deeper when compared with CMDs from WFC3/IR photometry alone. We present extensive analysis of the data quality including comparisons of luminosity functions and repeat measurements, and we use artificial star tests to quantify photometric completeness, uncertainties and biases. We find that the largest sources of systematic error in the photometry are due to spatial variations in the PSF models and charge transfer efficiency corrections.
