- Description:
- We report five Local Volume dwarf galaxies (two of which are presented here for the first time) uncovered during a comprehensive archival search for optical counterparts to ultra-compact high-velocity clouds (UCHVCs). The UCHVC population of HI clouds are thought to be candidate gas-rich, low-mass halos at the edge of the Local Group and beyond, but no comprehensive search for stellar counterparts to these systems has been presented. Careful visual inspection of all publicly available optical and ultraviolet imaging at the position of the UCHVCs revealed six blue, diffuse counterparts with a morphology consistent with a faint dwarf galaxy beyond the Local Group. Optical spectroscopy of all six candidate dwarf counterparts show that five have an H{alpha}-derived velocity consistent with the coincident HI cloud, confirming their association; the sixth diffuse counterpart is likely a background object. The size and luminosity of the UCHVC dwarfs is consistent with other known Local Volume dwarf irregular galaxies. The gas fraction (M_HI_/M_star_) of the five dwarfs are generally consistent with that of dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Volume, although ALFALFA-Dw1 (associated with ALFALFA UCHVC HVC274.68+74.70-123) has a very high M_HI_/M_star_~40. Despite the heterogeneous nature of our search, we demonstrate that the current dwarf companions to UCHVCs are at the edge of detectability due to their low surface brightness, and that deeper searches are likely to find more stellar systems. If more sensitive searches do not reveal further stellar counterparts to UCHVCs, then the dearth of such systems around the Local Group may be in conflict with {Lambda}CDM simulations.

- ASTRAL: reference spectra for evolved M stars
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/869/157
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury Program Advanced Spectral Library Project: Cool Stars was designed to collect representative, high-quality UV spectra of eight evolved F-M type cool stars. The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) echelle spectra of these objects enable investigations of a broad range of topics, including stellar and interstellar astrophysics. This paper provides a guide to the spectra of the two evolved M stars, the M2 Iab supergiant {alpha}Ori and the M3.4 giant {gamma}Cru, with comparisons to the prototypical K1.5 giant {alpha}Boo. It includes identifications of the significant atomic and molecular emission and absorption features and discusses the character of the photospheric and chromospheric continua and line spectra. The fluorescent processes responsible for a large portion of the emission-line spectrum, the characteristics of the stellar winds, and the available diagnostics for hot and cool plasmas are also summarized. This analysis will facilitate the future study of the spectra, outer atmospheres, and winds, not only of these objects but of numerous other cool, low-gravity stars, for years to come.

- Description:
- Astron was a Soviet spacecraft launched on 23 March 1983, and it was operational for eight years as the largest ultraviolet space telescope during its lifetime. Astron's payload consisted of an 80 cm ultraviolet telescope Spica and an X-ray spectroscope. We present 159 low resolution spectra of stars obtained during the Astron space mission (Tables 4, 5; hereafter table numbers in Boyarchuk et al. 1994 are given). Table 4 (observational log, logs.dat) contains data on 142 sessions for 90 stars (sorted in ascending order of RA), where SED was obtained by scanning method, and then data on 17 sessions for 15 stars (also sorted in ascending order of RA), where multicolor photometry was done. Kilpio et al. (2016, Baltic Astronomy 25, 23) presented results of the comparison of Astron data to the modern UV stellar data, discussed Astron precision and accuracy, and made some conclusions on potential application areas of these data. Also 34 sessions of observations of 27 stellar systems (galaxies and globular clusters) are presented. Observational log was published in Table 10 and data were published in Table 11, respectively. Also 16 sessions of observations of 12 nebulae (Table 12 for observational log and Table 13 for data themselves) are presented. Background radiation intensity data (Table 14) are presented in Table 15. At last, data on comets are presented in different forms. We draw your attention that observational data for stars, stellar systems, nebulae and comets are expressed in log [erg/s/cm^2/A], while for comets data 10E-13 erg/s/cm^2/A units are used, hydroxyl band photometric data for comets are expressed in log [erg/s/cm^2], and for the background data it is radiation intensity expressed in log [erg/s/cm^2/A/sr]. - Description:
- This paper is the first of a series whose aim is to perform a systematic study of A-type supergiant atmospheres and winds. Here we present a spectral atlas of 41 A-supergiants observed by us in high and medium resolution in the visible and ultraviolet. The atlas consists of profiles of the H{alpha}, H{beta}, H{gamma}, H{delta}, H{epsilon}, Ca II (H and K), Na I (D1 and D2), Mg II_4481_, Mg II [uv1] and Fe II [uv1, uv2, uv3, uv62, uv63, uv161] lines for 41 stars with spectral types ranging from B9 to A9 and luminosity classes Ia, Iab and Ib, and provides the basic data for a thoughtful study of these stars. The overall characteristics of the sample as well as the data reduction procedures are described. We also present some examples of spectral variability.

- Atlas of Quasar Energy Distributions
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/95/1
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present an atlas of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of normal, non-blazar, quasars over the whole available range (radio to 10 keV X-rays) of the electromagnetic spectrum. The primary (UVSX) sample includes 47 quasars for which the spectral energy distributions include X-ray spectral indices and UV data. Of these, 29 are radio quiet, and 18 are radio loud. The SEDs are presented both in figures and in tabular form, with additional tabular material published on CD-ROM. Previously unpublished observational data for a second set of quasars excluded from the primary sample are also tabulated. The effects of host galaxy starlight contamination and foreground extinction on the UVSX sample are considered and the sample is used to investigate the range of SED properties. Of course, the properties we derive are influenced strongly by the selection effects induced by quasar discovery techniques. We derive the mean energy distribution (MED) for radio-loud and radio-quiet objects and present the bolometric corrections derived from it. We note, however, that the dispersion about this mean is large (~one decade for both the infrared and ultraviolet components when the MED is normalized at the near-infrared inflection). At least part of the dispersion in the ultraviolet may be due to time variability, but this is unlikely to be important in the infrared. The existence of such a large dispersion indicates that the MED reflects only some of the properties of quasars and so should be used only with caution.

- A-values + oscillator strength of Ca XIII
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/444/305
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Electron impact collision strengths, energy levels, oscillator strengths and spontaneous radiative decay rates are calculated for Ca XIII. The configurations used are 2s2.2p4, 2s.2p5, 2p6, 2s2.2p3.3s, 2s2.2p3.3p and 2s2.2p3.3d giving rise to 86 fine-structure levels in intermediate coupling. Collision strengths are calculated at five incident energies (40, 80, 120, 160 and 200Ry) in the distorted wave approximation. Excitation rate coefficients are calculated as a function of electron temperature by assuming a Maxwellian electron velocity distribution. Using the excitation rate coefficients and the radiative transition rates, statistical equilibrium equations for level populations are solved at electron densities covering the range of 10^8-10^14cm^-3 at an electron temperature of logTe(K)=6.5, corresponding to maximum abundance of Ca XIII. Relative and absolute spectral line intensities are calculated, and their diagnostic relevance is discussed. This dataset will be made available in the next version of the CHIANTI database.

- AX Mon photometry and UV spectra
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/484/394
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- AX Monocerotis is a 232d, noneclipsing, interacting binary star that consists of a K giant, a Be-like giant, and a large amounts of circumstellar material. The K star is almost certainly a synchronous rotator and is probably in contact with its critical lobe. The Be star was believed to be a rapid rotator based on extremely wide absorption lines, but new spectra show that these lines arise from the circumstellar environment. Hydrogen emission, also circumstellar, is many times stronger than the continuum. Near-ultraviolet light curves exhibit a 0.5 mag dip near phase 0.75, but there is no such variability at longer wavelengths. Gas flow trajectories from the cusp of the K star toward the Be star provide a simple explanation for the photometric and spectroscopic behavior. We may have found a decreasing orbital period, but more data are necessary to confirm this result. We present several models for AX Mon based on (1) new and archival visible photometry, (2) archival ultraviolet spectroscopy, (3) new and archival visible spectroscopy, (4) new visible polarimetry, and (5) new radio photometry. Further observations, including optical interferometry, are proposed.

- Description:
- We present an atlas of ultraviolet and infrared images of ~15750 local (d<~50Mpc) galaxies, as observed by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) missions. These maps have matched resolution (FWHM 7.5" and 15"), matched astrometry, and a common procedure for background removal. We demonstrate that they agree well with resolved intensity measurements and integrated photometry from previous surveys. This atlas represents the first part of a program (the z=0 Multiwavelength Galaxy Synthesis) to create a large, uniform database of resolved measurements of gas and dust in nearby galaxies. This atlas allows us estimate local and integrated star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (M_*_) across the local galaxy population in a uniform way. In the appendix, we use the population synthesis fits of Salim+ (2016ApJS..227....2S and 2018ApJ...859...11S) to calibrate integrated M_*_ and SFR estimators based on GALEX and WISE. Because they leverage a Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-based training set of >100000 galaxies, these calibrations have high precision and allow us to rigorously compare local galaxies to SDSS results. We provide these SFR and M_*_ estimates for all galaxies in our sample and show that our results yield a "main sequence" of star-forming galaxies comparable to previous work. We also show the distribution of intensities from resolved galaxies in NUV-to-WISE1 versus WISE1-to-WISE3 space, which captures much of the key physics accessed by these bands.

- BANYAN. XII. New members from Gaia-Tycho data
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/860/43
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a search for stellar members of young associations within 150pc of the Sun, based on TGAS and an updated version of the BANYAN {Sigma} software to determine Bayesian membership probabilities that includes Gaia-2MASS color-magnitude diagrams. We identify 32 new F0-M3-type bona fide members of the 10-200Myr old Sco-Cen, Carina, Tucana-Horologium, Columba, and Octans associations and the AB Doradus, {beta} Pictoris, and Carina-Near moving groups. These new bona fide members have measurements of their full kinematics and literature data consistent with a young age. We also confirm the membership of 66 previously known candidate members using their Gaia-Tycho trigonometric distances or new literature radial velocities, and identify 219 additional new candidate members, most of which do not yet have a radial velocity measurement. This work is the first step toward a completeness-corrected survey of young association members based on Gaia DR2 in the near future.
