- From the cross-correlation of the IRAS FSC catalog with the radio FIRST catalog, 230 infrared galaxies were selected having optical classifications and redshifts from SDSS and NED. To understand the nature of these objects we have compared them with a sample of bright ULIRGs with fluxes f>1Jy at 60-micron and with 14 optically faint IRAS FSC galaxies, showing that IRAS galaxies are not always strong infrared sources. We also have calibrated Star Formation Rates based on luminosities of the PAH feature at 7.7-micron and 1.4GHz radio flux densities, which confirmed the consistency between these two SFRs. We have estimated the extinction for our 230 objects using SFRs calibrated from the PAH feature compared to ultraviolet flux, which shows that only 1% of the ultraviolet continuum typically escapes extinction by dust within a starburst. As our 230 galaxies have no spectra available from Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) archive, to estimate the infrared flux at 7.7 (for SB galaxies) or 8.0 (for AGN and composite) micron, we have used the median ratios of the IRAS fluxes at 25-micron to fluxes at 7.7 or 8.0-micron estimated for each 41.0<logL(IR)<41.9, 42.0<logL(IR)<42.9, 43.0<logL(IR)<43.9, 44.0<logL(IR)<44.9, and 45.0<logL(IR)<45.9 luminosity bins, using objects having spectra from SST archive.

- List of spectral lines in the wavelength range from 668{AA} to 1611{AA} identified in SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation, spectrograph on the spacecraft SOHO) spectra of the average quiet Sun (QS), a coronal hole (CH) and a sunspot on disk (SS). Spectral lines observed in second order of diffraction which are also given here, extend the lower wavelength limit to below 500{AA}. For each entry we give the observed wavelengths in angstrom, the identification, the transition, the peak of spectral radiance, L^peak^, in mW/(sr*m^2^*{AA}) (incl. background), and a cross-reference to other line lists available in the literature (cf., Sect. 5.1). For second-order lines radiance entries are generally not provided, since the background separation in both orders of diffraction is a non-trivial task, which can not be automated. Only a few radiance values of strong second-order lines with negligible first-order contribution are given, which are marked by an asterisk (*).

- The SOLar SPECtrum (SOLSPEC) experiment is part of the Solar Monitoring Observatory (SOLAR) payload, and has been externally mounted on the Columbus module of the International Space Station (ISS) since 2008. SOLAR/SOLSPEC combines three absolutely calibrated double monochromators with concave gratings for measuring the solar spectral irradiance (SSI) from 166nm to 3088nm. This physical quantity is a key input for studies of climatology, planetary atmospheres, and solar physics. A general description of the instrument is given, including in-flight operations and performance of the ultraviolet (UV) channel from 175nm to 340nm. We developed a range of processing and correction methods, which are described in detail. For example, methods for correcting thermal behavior effects, instrument linearity, and especially the accuracy of the wavelength and absolute radiometric scales have been validated by modeling the standard uncertainties. The deliverable is a quiet Sun UV reference solar spectrum as measured by SOLAR/SOLSPEC during the minimum of solar activity prior to cycle 24. Comparisons with other instruments measuring SSI are also presented.

- Using high-resolution ultraviolet spectra of 16 low-z QSOs obtained with the E140M echelle mode of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, we study the physical conditions and statistics of OVI absorption in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z<0.5. We identify 51 intervening (z_abs_<z_QSO_) OVI systems comprising 77 individual components, and we find 14 "proximate" systems (z_abs_~z_QSO_) containing 34 components. For intervening systems (components) with rest-frame equivalent width W_r_>30m{AA}, the number of OVI absorbers per unit redshift dN/dz=15.6^+2.9^_-2.4_(21.0^+3.2^_-2.8_), and this decreases to dN/dz=0.9^+1.0^_-0.5_(0.3^+0.7^_-0.3_) for W_r_>300m{AA}. The number per redshift increases steeply as z_abs_ approaches z_QSO_; we find that dN/dz is ~3-10 times higher within 2500km/s of z_QSO_. The most striking difference between intervening and proximate systems is that some proximate absorbers have substantially lower HI/OVI ratios.

- We present the results of the Swift and NuSTAR observations of the nearby BL Lac object Mrk 421 during 2013 January-June. The source exhibited a strong long-term variability in the 0.3-10keV and 3-79keV bands with the maximum-to-minimum daily-binned flux ratios of 22 and 95, respectively, in about 3 months, mainly due to unprecedented strong X-ray outbursts by more than an order of magnitude in both bands within 2 weeks in 2013 April when the 0.3-10keV count rate exceeded the level of 200cts/s for the first time, and Mrk 421 became one of the brightest sources in the X-ray sky. The source was also very active on intra-day timescales, and it showed flux doubling and halving timescales of 1.16-7.20hr and 1.04-3.54hr, respectively. On some occasions, the flux varied by 4%-23% within 300-840s. During this period, the source also exhibited some of the most extreme X-ray spectral variability ever reported for BL Lacs-the location of the synchrotron spectral energy distribution peak shifted from a few eV to ~10keV, and the photon index at 1 keV and curvature parameter varied on timescales from a few weeks down to intervals shorter than 1ks. MAGIC and First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope observations also revealed a very strong very high energy (VHE) flare during April 11-17. The UV and HE {gamma}-ray flares were much weaker compared to their X-ray counterparts, and they generally showed significantly stronger correlation with each other than with the X-ray fluxes.

- Detection of the IceCube-170922A neutrino coincident with the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056, the first and only ~3{sigma} high-energy neutrino source association to date, offers a potential breakthrough in our understanding of high-energy cosmic particles and blazar physics. We present a comprehensive analysis of TXS 0506+056 during its flaring state, using newly collected Swift, NuSTAR, and X-shooter data with Fermi observations and numerical models to constrain the blazar's particle acceleration processes and multimessenger (electromagnetic (EM) and high-energy neutrino) emissions. Accounting properly for EM cascades in the emission region, we find a physically consistent picture only within a hybrid leptonic scenario, with {gamma}-rays produced by external inverse-Compton processes and high-energy neutrinos via a radiatively subdominant hadronic component. We derive robust constraints on the blazar's neutrino and cosmic-ray emissions and demonstrate that, because of cascade effects, the 0.1-100keV emissions of TXS 0506+056 serve as a better probe of its hadronic acceleration and high-energy neutrino production processes than its GeV-TeV emissions. If the IceCube neutrino association holds, physical conditions in the TXS 0506+056 jet must be close to optimal for high-energy neutrino production, and are not favorable for ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray acceleration. Alternatively, the challenges we identify in generating a significant rate of IceCube neutrino detections from TXS 0506+056 may disfavor single-zone models, in which {gamma}-rays and high-energy neutrinos are produced in a single emission region. In concert with continued operations of the high-energy neutrino observatories, we advocate regular X-ray monitoring of TXS 0506+056 and other blazars in order to test single-zone blazar emission models, clarify the nature and extent of their hadronic acceleration processes, and carry out the most sensitive possible search for additional multimessenger sources.

- We present the results from the timing and spectral study of Mrk 421 based mainly on the Swift data in the X-ray energy range obtained during the time interval 2015 December-2018 April. The most extreme X-ray flaring activity on long-term, daily, and intraday timescales was observed during the 2 month period that started in 2017 December, when the 0.3-10keV flux exceeded a level of 5x10^-9^erg/cm^2^/s, recorded only twice previously. While the TeV- band and X-ray variabilities were mostly correlated, the source often varied in a complex manner in the MeV-GeV and radio-UV energy ranges, indicating that the multifrequency emission of Mrk 421 could not always be generated in a single zone. The longer-term flares at X-rays and {gamma}-rays showed a lognormal character, possibly indicating a variability imprint of the accretion disk onto the jet. A vast majority of the 0.3-10keV spectra were consistent with the log-parabolic model, showing relatively low spectral curvature and correlations between the different spectral parameters, predicted in the case of the first- and second-order Fermi processes. The position of the synchrotron spectral energy distribution peak showed an extreme variability on diverse timescales between the energies Ep<0.1 and >15keV, with 15% of the spectra peaking at the hard X-ray, and was related to the peak height as S^p^{propto}E_p_^{alpha}^ with {alpha}~0.6, which is expected for the transition from Kraichnan-type turbulence into the "hard sphere" one. The 0.3-300GeV spectra showed features of the hadronic contribution, jet-star interaction, and upscatter in the Klein-Nishina regime in different time intervals.

- We present extensive early photometric (ultraviolet through near-infrared) and spectroscopic (optical and near-infrared) data on supernova (SN) 2008D as well as X-ray data analysis on the associated Swift X-ray transient (XRT) 080109. Our data span a time range of 5hr before the detection of the X-ray transient to 150 days after its detection, and a detailed analysis allowed us to derive constraints on the nature of the SN and its progenitor; throughout we draw comparisons with results presented in the literature and find several key aspects that differ. Our data first established that SN 2008D is a spectroscopically normal SN Ib (i.e., showing conspicuous He lines) and showed that SN 2008D had a relatively long rise time of 18 days and a modest optical peak luminosity. The early-time light curves of the SN are dominated by a cooling stellar envelope (for {Delta}t~0.1-4days, most pronounced in the blue bands) followed by ^56^Ni decay.

- Using the UVBLUE library of synthetic stellar spectra we have computed a set of mid-UV line and continuum spectroscopic indices. We explore their behavior in terms of the leading stellar parameters (Teff, logg). The overall result is that synthetic indices follow the general trends depicted by those computed from empirical databases. Separately we also examine the index sensitivity to changes in chemical composition, an analysis only feasible under a theoretical approach. In this respect, lines indices FeI 3000, BL 3096, and MgI 2852 and the continuum index 2828/2921 are the least sensitive features, an important characteristic to be taken into account for the analyses of integrated spectra of stellar systems.
