- In this work, we present a catalog of 2651 carbon stars from the fourth Data Release (DR4) of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopy Telescope (LAMOST). Using an efficient machine-learning algorithm, we find these stars from more than 7 million spectra. As a by-product, 17 carbon-enhanced metal- poor turnoff star candidates are also reported in this paper, and they are preliminarily identified by their atmospheric parameters. Except for 176 stars that could not be given spectral types, we classify the other 2475 carbon stars into five subtypes: 864 C-H, 226 C-R, 400 C-J, 266 C-N, and 719 barium stars based on a series of spectral features. Furthermore, we divide the C-J stars into three subtypes, C-J(H), C-J(R), and C-J(N), and about 90% of them are cool N-type stars as expected from previous literature. Besides spectroscopic classification, we also match these carbon stars to multiple broadband photometries. Using ultraviolet photometry data, we find that 25 carbon stars have FUV detections and that they are likely to be in binary systems with compact white dwarf companions.

- Cassiopeia A is one of the best-studied supernova remnants. Its bright radio and X-ray emission is due to shocked ejecta. Cas A is rather unique in that the unshocked ejecta can also be studied: through emission in the infrared, the radio-active decay of ^44^Ti, and the low-frequency free-free absorption caused by cold ionised gas, which is the topic of this paper. Free-free absorption processes are acted by the mass, geometry, temperature, and ionisation conditions in the absorbing gas. Observations at the lowest radio frequencies can constrain a combination of these properties. We used Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) Low Band Antenna observations at 30-77MHz and Very Large Array (VLA) L-band observations at 1-2GHz to fit for internal absorption as parametrised by the emission measure. We simultaneously fit multiple UV-matched images with a common resolution of 17" (this corresponds to 0.25pc for a source at the distance of Cas A). The ample frequency coverage allows us separate the relative contributions from the absorbing gas, the unabsorbed front of the shell, and the absorbed back of the shell to the emission spectrum. We explored the effects that a temperature lower than the ~100-500K proposed from infrared observations and a high degree of clumping can have on the derived physical properties of the unshocked material, such as its mass and density. We also compiled integrated radio flux density measurements, fit for the absorption processes that occur in the radio band, and considered their ect on the secular decline of the source. We find a mass in the unshocked ejecta of M=2.95+/-0.48M_{sun}_ for an assumed gas temperature of T=100K. This estimate is reduced for colder gas temperatures and, most significantly, if the ejecta are clumped.We measure the reverse shock to have a radius of 114+/-6" and be centred at 23:23:26, +58:48:54 (J2000).We also find that a decrease in the amount of mass in the unshocked ejecta (as more and more material meets the reverse shock and heats up) cannot account for the observed low-frequency behaviour of the secular decline rate. To reconcile our low-frequency absorption measurements with models that reproduce much of the observed behaviour in Cas A and predict little mass in the unshocked ejecta, the ejecta need to be very clumped or the temperature in the cold gas needs to be low (~10K). Both of these options are plausible and can together contribute to the high absorption value that we find.

Bull. 40, 31) The main task of the catalogue consists in a comprehensive collection of equivalent widths of the 217nm band derived from both spectrophotometric and filterphotometric measurements obtained with TD-1, OAO-2 and ANS satellites. These data concern reddened O, B stars with color excesses E(B-V) >= 0.02 mag. The extinction curve is approximated by the empirical formula introduced by Guertler et al. (1982AN....303..105G) e({lambda}) = A(i/{lambda} - 1/{lambda}o)^n^ + B + C {kappa}({lambda}) The relative errors amount to about {delta}A/A = +/- 0.10, {delta}B/B = +/- 0.02 and {delta}C/C = +/- 0.03.

- We present new absorption-line analysis and new galaxy survey data obtained for the field around PKS 0405-123 at z_QSO_=0.57. Combining previously known OVI absorbers with new identifications in the higher S/N ultraviolet (UV) spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, we have established a sample of 7 OVI absorbers and 12 individual components at z=0.0918-0.495 along the sightline towards PKS 0405-123. We complement the available UV absorption spectra with galaxy survey data that reach 100 percent completeness at projected distances {rho}<200kpc of the quasar sightline for galaxies as faint as 0.1L* (0.2L*) out to redshifts of z~0.35 (z~0.5). The high level of completeness achieved at faint magnitudes by our survey reveals that OVI absorbers are closely associated with gas-rich environments containing at least one low-mass, emission-line galaxy. An intriguing exception is a strong OVI system at z~0.183 that does not have a galaxy found at {rho}<4Mpc, and our survey rules out the presence of any galaxies of L>0.04L* at {rho}<250kpc and any galaxies of L>0.3L* at {rho}<1Mpc. We further examine the galactic environments of OVI absorbers and those 'Ly{alpha}-only' absorbers with neutral hydrogen column density log N(HI)<13.6 and no detectable OVI absorption features. The Ly{alpha}-only absorbers serve as a control sample in seeking the discriminating galactic features that result in the observed Ovi absorbing gas at large galactic radii. We find a clear distinction in the radial profiles of mean galaxy surface brightness around different absorbers. Specifically, Ovi absorbers are found to reside in regions of higher mean surface brightness at {rho}<~500kpc ({Delta}{mu}_R_~+5magMpc^-2^ relative to the background at {rho}>500kpc), while only a mild increase in galaxy surface brightness is seen at small {rho} around Ly{alpha}-only absorbers ({Delta}{mu}_R_~+2magMpc^-2^). The additional insights gained from our deep galaxy survey demonstrate the need to probe the galaxy populations to low luminosities in order to better understand the nature of the absorbing systems.

- We present a measurement of the fraction of Lyman {alpha} (Ly{alpha}) emitters (X_Ly{alpha}_) amongst HST continuum-selected galaxies at 3<z<6 with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the VLT. Making use of the first 24 MUSE-Wide pointings in GOODS-South, each having an integration time of 1h, we detect 100Ly{alpha} emitters and find X_Ly{alpha}_>~0.5 for most of the redshift range covered, with 29 per cent of the Ly{alpha} sample exhibiting rest equivalent widths (rest-EWs)<=15{AA}. Adopting a range of rest-EW cuts (0~75{AA}), we find no evidence of a dependence of XLy{alpha} on either redshift or ultraviolet luminosity.

- We present a study of the relation between X-rays and ultraviolet emission in quasars for a sample of broad-line, radio-quiet objects obtained from the cross-match of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR14 with the latest Chandra Source Catalog 2.0 (2332 quasars) and the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey (273 quasars). The non-linear relation between the ultraviolet (at 2500{AA}, LUV) and the X-ray (at 2keV, LX) emission in quasars has been proved to be characterised by a smaller intrinsic dispersion than the observed one, as long as a homogeneous selection, aimed at preventing the inclusion of contaminants in the sample, is fulfilled. By leveraging on the low background of Chandra, we performed a complete spectral analysis of all the data available for the SDSS-CSC2.0 quasar sample (i.e. 3430 X-ray observations), with the main goal of reducing the uncertainties on the source properties (e.g. flux, spectral slope). We analysed whether any evolution of the LX-LUV relation exists by dividing the sample in narrow redshift intervals across the redshift range spanned by our sample, z~=0.5-4. We find that the slope of the relation does not evolve with redshift and it is consistent with the literature value of 0.6 over the explored redshift range, implying that the mechanism underlying the coupling of the accretion disc and hot corona is the same at the different cosmic epochs. We also find that the dispersion decreases when examining the highest redshifts, where only pointed observations are available. These results further confirm that quasars are 'standardisable candles', that is we can reliably measure cosmological distances at high redshifts where very few cosmological probes are available.

- We analyzed absorption features arising from interstellar neutral carbon that appeared in the UV spectra of 89 stars recorded in the highest resolution echelle modes of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope so that we could determine the relative populations of collisionally excited fine-structure levels in the atom's electronic ground state. From this information, in combination with molecular hydrogen rotation temperatures, we derive the distribution of thermal pressures in the diffuse, cold neutral medium (CNM). We find a lognormal pressure distribution (weighted by mass) with a mean in log(p/k) equal to 3.58 and an rms dispersion of at least 0.175dex that plausibly arises from turbulence with a characteristic Mach number in the range 1<M<4.

- We use UV/optical and X-ray observations of 272 radio-quiet Type 1 active galactic nuclei and quasars to investigate the CIV Baldwin Effect (BEff). The UV/optical spectra are drawn from the Hubble Space Telescope, International Ultraviolet Explorer and Sloan Digital Sky Survey archives. The X-ray spectra are from the Chandra and XMM-Newton archives. We apply correlation and partial-correlation analyses to the equivalent widths (EWs), continuum monochromatic luminosities, and {alpha}_ox_, which characterizes the relative X-ray to UV brightness. The EW of the CIV{lambda}1549 emission line is correlated with both {alpha}_ox_ and luminosity. In our sample, narrow Fe K{alpha} 6.4keV emission lines are detected in 50 objects.

- We surveyed the Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra of 49 low-redshift quasars for z<1 CIV candidates, relying solely on the characteristic wavelength separation of the doublet. After consideration of the defining traits of CIV doublets (e.g., consistent line profiles, other associated transitions, etc.), we defined a sample of 38 definite (group G=1) and five likely (G=2) doublets with rest equivalent widths W_r_ for both lines detected at >=3{sigma}_W_r__. We conducted Monte Carlo completeness tests to measure the unblocked redshift ({Delta}z) and co-moving path length ({Delta}X) over which we were sensitive to CIV doublets of a range of equivalent widths and column densities. Using the power-law model of f(N(C^+3^)), we measured the C^+3^ mass density relative to the critical density: {Omega}_C^+3^_=(6.20^+1.82^_-1.52_)x10^-8^ for 13<=logN(C^+3^)<=15.
