- Description:
- We present a complete ^12^CO(J=1-0) map of the prominent molecular ridge in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) obtained with the 22m ATNF Mopra Telescope. The region stretches southward by ~2{deg} (or 1.7kpc) from 30 Doradus, the most vigorous star-forming region in the Local Group. The location of this molecular ridge is unique insofar as it allows us to study the properties of molecular gas as a function of the ambient radiation field in a low-metallicity environment. The mass spectrum and the scaling relations between the properties of the CO clumps in the molecular ridge are similar, but not identical, to those that have been established for Galactic molecular clouds.

- Description:
- Studying giant star-forming clumps in distant galaxies is important to understand galaxy formation and evolution. At present, however, observers and theorists have not reached a consensus on whether the observed "clumps" in distant galaxies are the same phenomenon that is seen in simulations. In this paper, as a step to establish a benchmark of direct comparisons between observations and theories, we publish a sample of clumps constructed to represent the commonly observed "clumps" in the literature. This sample contains 3193 clumps detected from 1270 galaxies at 0.5<=z<3.0. The clumps are detected from rest-frame UV images, as described in our previous paper. Their physical properties (e.g., rest-frame color, stellar mass (M*), star formation rate (SFR), age, and dust extinction) are measured by fitting the spectral energy distribution (SED) to synthetic stellar population models. We carefully test the procedures of measuring clump properties, especially the method of subtracting background fluxes from the diffuse component of galaxies. With our fiducial background subtraction, we find a radial clump U-V color variation, where clumps close to galactic centers are redder than those in outskirts. The slope of the color gradient (clump color as a function of their galactocentric distance scaled by the semimajor axis of galaxies) changes with redshift and M* of the host galaxies: at a fixed M*, the slope becomes steeper toward low redshift, and at a fixed redshift, it becomes slightly steeper with M*. Based on our SED fitting, this observed color gradient can be explained by a combination of a negative age gradient, a negative E(B-V) gradient, and a positive specific SFR gradient of the clumps. We also find that the color gradients of clumps are steeper than those of intra-clump regions. Correspondingly, the radial gradients of the derived physical properties of clumps are different from those of the diffuse component or intra-clump regions.

- Column densities for HI, AlIII, SiIV, CIV, OVI
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Column densities for HI, AlIII, SiIV, CIV, and OVI toward 109 stars and 30 extragalactic objects have been assembled to study the extensions of these species away from the Galactic plane into the Galactic halo. HI and AlIII mostly trace the warm neutral and warm ionized medium, respectively, while SiIV, CIV, and OVI trace a combination of warm photoionized and collisionally ionized plasmas. The much larger object sample compared to previous studies allows us to consider and correct for the effects of the sample bias that has affected earlier but smaller surveys of the gas distributions. The observations are compared to the predictions of the various models for the production of the transition temperature gas in the halo.

- Description:
- We develop a kinematical model for the Milky Way SiIV-bearing gas to determine its density distribution and kinematics. This model is constrained by a column density line-shape sample extracted from the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph archival data, which contains 186 active galactic nucleus sight lines. We find that the SiIV ion density distribution is dominated by an extended disk along the z-direction (above or below the midplane), i.e., n(z)=n_0_exp(-(z/z_0_)^0.82^), where z_0_ is the scale height of 6.3_-1.5_^+1.6^kpc (northern hemisphere) and 3.6_-0.9_^+1.0^kpc (southern hemisphere). The density distribution of the disk in the radial direction shows a sharp edge at 15-20kpc given by, n(r_XY_)=n_0_exp(-(r_XY_/r_0_)^3.36^), where r_0_~12.5+/-0.6kpc. The difference of density distributions over r_XY_ and z directions indicates that the warm gas traced by SiIV is mainly associated with disk processes (e.g., feedback or cycling gas) rather than accretion. We estimate the mass of the warm gas (within 50kpc) is log(M(50kpc)/M_{sun}_)~8.1 (assuming Z~0.5Z_{sun}_), and a 3{sigma} upper limit of log(M(250kpc)/M_{sun}_)~9.1 (excluding the Magellanic system). Kinematically, the warm gas disk is nearly co-rotating with the stellar disk at v_rot_=215+/-3km/s, which lags the midplane rotation by about 8km/s/kpc (within 5kpc). Meanwhile, we note that the warm gas in the northern hemisphere has significant accretion with vacc of 69+/-7km/s at 10kpc (an accretion rate of -0.60_-0.13_^+0.11^M_{sun}_/yr), while in the southern hemisphere, there is no measurable accretion, with an upper limit of 0.4M_{sun}_/yr.

- Column densities of CGM absorption lines
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We investigate the geometric distribution of gas metallicities in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around 47, z<0.7 galaxies from the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" Survey. Using a combination of quasar spectra from Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/COS and from Keck/HIRES or Very Large Telescope/UVES, we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We then use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach with Cloudy to estimate the metallicity of cool (T~10^4^K) CGM gas. We also use HST images to determine host-galaxy inclination and quasar-galaxy azimuthal angles. Our sample spans a HI column density range of 13.8cm^-2^<logN_HI_<19.9cm^-2^. We find (1) while the metallicity distribution appears bimodal, a Hartigan dip test cannot rule out a unimodal distribution (0.4{sigma}). (2) CGM metallicities are independent of halo mass, spanning three orders of magnitude at a fixed halo mass. (3) The CGM metallicity does not depend on the galaxy azimuthal and inclination angles regardless of HI column density, impact parameter, and galaxy color. (4) The ionization parameter does not depend on azimuthal angle. We suggest that the partial Lyman limit metallicity bimodality is not driven by a spatial azimuthal bimodality. Our results are consistent with simulations where the CGM is complex and outflowing, accreting, and recycled gas are well-homogenized at z<0.7. The presence of low-metallicity gas at all orientations suggests that cold streams of accreting filaments are not necessarily aligned with the galaxy plane at low redshifts or intergalactic transfer may dominate. Finally, our results support simulations showing that strong metal absorption can mask the presence of low-metallicity gas in integrated line-of-sight CGM metallicities.

- Description:
- We aim to determine whether dissociative excitation of cometary neutralsby electron impact is the major source of far-ultraviolet (FUV) emissions at comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenkoin the southern hemisphere at large heliocentric distances, both during quiet conditions and impacts of corotating interaction regions observed in the summer of 2016. We combined multiple datasets from the Rosetta mission through a multi-instrument analysis to complete the first forward modelling of FUV emissions in the southern hemisphere of comet 67P and compared modelled brightnesses to observations with the Alice FUV imaging spectrograph. We modelled the brightness of OI1356, OI1304, Lyman-beta, CI1657, and CII1335 emissions, which are associated with the dissociation products of the four major neutral species in the coma: CO2, H2O, CO, and O2. The suprathermal electron population was probed by the Ion and Electron Sensor of theRosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC/IES) and the neutral column density was constrained by several instruments: the RosettaOrbiter Spectrometer for Ion and Neutral Analysis (ROSINA), the Microwave Instrument for the Rosetta Orbiter (MIRO)and the Visual InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS). The modelled and observed brightnesses of the FUV emission lines agree closely when viewing nadir and dissociative excitation by electron impact is shown to be the dominant source of emissions away from perihelion. The CII1335 emissions are shown to be consistent with the volume mixing ratio of CO derived from ROSINA. When viewing the limb during the impacts of corotating interaction regions, the model reproduces brightnesses of OI1356 and CI1657 well, but resonance scattering in the extended coma may contribute significantly to the observed Lyman-beta and OI1304 emissions. The correlation between variations in the suprathermal electron flux and the observed FUV line brightnesses when viewing the comet's limb suggests electrons are accelerated on large scales and that they originate in the solar wind. This means that the FUV emissions are auroral in nature.

- Comparison of IUE and CALSPEC SEDs for 6 WDs
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/155/162
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- A collection of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is available in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) CALSPEC database that is based on calculated model atmospheres for pure hydrogen white dwarfs (WDs). A much larger set (~100000) of UV SEDs covering the range (1150-3350 {AA}) with somewhat lower quality are available in the IUE database. IUE low-dispersion flux distributions are compared with CALSPEC to provide a correction that places IUE fluxes on the CALSPEC scale. While IUE observations are repeatable to only 4%-10% in regions of good sensitivity, the average flux corrections have a precision of 2%-3%. Our re-calibration places the IUE flux scale on the current UV reference standard and is relevant for any project based on IUE archival data, including our planned comparison of GALEX to the corrected IUE fluxes. IUE SEDs may be used to plan observations and cross-calibrate data from future missions, so the IUE flux calibration must be consistent with HST instrumental calibrations to the best possible precision.

- Description:
- We present the results of a detailed investigation into the physical conditions in interstellar material interacting with the supernova remnant (SNR) IC443. Our analysis is based on a comprehensive examination of high-resolution far-ultraviolet spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of two stars behind IC443. One of our targets (HD43582) probes gas along the entire line of sight through the SNR, while the other (HD254755) samples material located ahead of the primary supernova shock front. We identify low-velocity quiescent gas in both directions and find that the densities and temperatures in these components are typical of diffuse atomic and molecular clouds. Numerous high- velocity components are observed in the absorption profiles of neutral and singly ionized atomic species toward HD43582. These components exhibit a combination of greatly enhanced thermal pressures and significantly reduced dust-grain depletions. We interpret this material as cooling gas in a recombination zone far downstream from shocks driven into neutral gas clumps. The pressures derived for a group of ionized gas components at high positive velocity toward HD43582 are lower than those of the other shocked components, pointing to pressure inhomogeneities across the remnant. A strong, very high velocity component near -620km/s is seen in the absorption profiles of highly ionized species toward HD43582. The velocity of this material is consistent with the range of shock velocities implied by observations of soft thermal X-ray emission from IC443. Moderately high velocity gas toward HD254755 may represent shocked material from a separate foreground SNR.

- COS CGM compendium (CCC). III. z<=1 Ly{alpha} syst.
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We characterize the metallicities and physical properties of cool, photoionized gas in a sample of 152 z<=1 strong Ly{alpha} forest systems (SLFSs, absorbers with 15<logN_HI_<16.2). The sample is drawn from our Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) circumgalactic medium compendium (CCC), an ultraviolet survey of HI-selected circumgalactic gas around z<=1 galaxies that targets 261 absorbers with 15<logN_HI_<19. We show that the metallicity probability distribution function of the SLFSs at z<=1 is unimodal, skewed to low metallicities with a mean and median of [X/H]=-1.47 and -1.18dex. Very metal-poor gas with [X/H]{<}-1.4 represents about half of the population of absorbers with 15<logN_HI_<=18, while it is rare at higher N_HI_. Thus, there are important reservoirs of primitive (though not pristine) diffuse ionized gas around z<=1 galaxies. The photoionized gas around z<=1 galaxies is highly inhomogeneous based on the wide range of metallicities observed (-3<=[X/H]<=+0.4) and the fact that there are large metallicity variations (factors of 2 to 25) for most of the closely spaced absorbers ({Delta}v<=300km/s) along the same sightlines. These absorbers show a complex evolution with redshift and HI column density, and we identify subtle cosmic evolution effects that affect the interpretation of metallicity distributions and comparison with other absorber samples. We discuss the physical conditions and cosmic baryon and metal budgets of the CCC absorbers. Finally, we compare the CCC results to recent cosmological zoom simulations and explore the origins of the 15<logN_HI_<19 absorbers within the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) high-resolution simulations.
