- We present an extended optical spectropolarimetry of R CrB from 1998 January to 2003 September. The polarization was almost constant in the phase of maximum brightness, being consistent with past observations. We detected, however, temporary changes of the polarization (~0.5%) in 2001 March and August, which were the first detections of large polarization variability in R CrB near maximum brightness. The amplitude and the position angle of the "transient polarization" were almost constant with wavelength in both events. There was a difference of about 20{deg} in the position angle between the two events. Each event could be explained by light scattering due to a short-lived dust puff occasionally ejected off the line of sight.

- A sample of cataclysmic variables (CVs) is presented including spectroscopically identified 380 spectra of 245 objects, of which 58 CV candidates are new discoveries. The BaggingTopPush and the Random Forest algorithms are applied to the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) to retrieve CVs with strong emission lines and with broad absorption lines respectively. Based on spectroscopic classification, 134 dwarf novae, 41 nova-like variables, and 19 magnetic CVs are identified from the sample. In addition, 89 high-inclination systems and 33 CVs showing companion stars are recognized and discussed for their distinct spectral characteristics. Comparisons between CVs from LAMOST and from published catalogs are made in spatial and magnitude distribution, and the difference of their locus in the Gaia color-absolute magnitude diagram (CaMD) are also investigated. More interestingly, for two dwarf novae observed through LAMOST and SDSS in different epochs, their spectra both in quiescence phase and during outburst are exhibited.

- We created a large database of physical parameters and variability indicators by fully reducing and analyzing the large number of spectra taken to complement the asteroseismic observations of the COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits (CoRoT) satellite. 7103 spectra of 261 stars obtained with the ESO echelle spectrograph HARPS have been stored in the VO-compliant database Spectroscopic Indicators in a SeisMic Archive (SISMA), along with the CoRoT photometric data of the 72 CoRoT asteroseismic targets. The remaining stars belong to the same variable classes of the CoRoT targets and were observed to better characterize the properties of such classes. Several useful variability indicators (mean line profiles, indices of differential rotation, activity and emission lines) together with vsini and radial-velocity measurements have been extracted from the spectra. The atmospheric parameters T_eff_,logg, and [Fe/H] have been computed following a homogeneous procedure. As a result, we fully characterize a sample of new and known variable stars by computing several spectroscopic indicators, also providing some cases of simultaneous photometry and spectroscopy.

- We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of RR Lyrae (RRL) variables in the globular cluster NGC5139 ({omega} Cen). We collected optical (4580-5330{AA}), high-resolution (R~34000), high signal-to-noise ratio (~200) spectra for 113 RRLs with the multifiber spectrograph M2FS at the Magellan/Clay Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We also analyzed high- resolution (R~26000) spectra for 122 RRLs collected with FLAMES/GIRAFFE at the Very Large Telescope, available in the ESO archive. The current sample doubles the literature abundances of cluster and field RRLs in the Milky Way based on high-resolution spectra. Equivalent-width measurements were used to estimate atmospheric parameters, iron, and abundance ratios for {alpha} (Mg, Ca, Ti), iron peak (Sc, Cr, Ni, Zn), and s-process (Y) elements. We confirm that {omega}Cen is a complex cluster, characterized by a large spread in the iron content: -2.58<~[Fe/H]<~-0.85. We estimated the average cluster abundance as <[Fe/H]>=-1.80{+/-}0.03, with {sigma}=0.33dex. Our findings also suggest that two different RRL populations coexist in the cluster. The former is more metal-poor ([Fe/H]<~-1.5), with almost solar abundance of Y. The latter is less numerous, more metal-rich, and yttrium enhanced ([Y/Fe]>~0.4). This peculiar bimodal enrichment only shows up in the s-process element, and it is not observed among lighter elements, whose [X/Fe] ratios are typical for Galactic globular clusters.

- Using a sample of 43 bright (V<16.1, distance <13kpc) RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) from the QUasar Equatorial Survey with spectroscopic radial velocities and metallicities, we find that several separate halo substructures contribute to the Virgo overdensity (VOD). While there is little evidence of a halo substructure in the spatial distribution of these stars, their distribution in radial velocity reveals two moving groups. These results are reinforced when the sample is combined with a sample of blue horizontal branch stars that were identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the combined sample provides evidence for one additional moving group.

- This paper reports on the spectroscopic investigation of 238 Cepheids in the northern sky. Of these stars, about 150 are new to the study of the galactic abundance gradient. These new Cepheids bring the total number of Cepheids involved in abundance distribution studies to over 400. In this work, we also consider systematics between various studies and also those which result from the choice of models.

- We used high-quality Kepler photometry and spectroscopic data to investigate the Kepler binary candidate KIC 5988140. Using the spectrum synthesis method, we derived the fundamental parameters (T_eff_, logg, [M/H], vsini) and the abundances. Frequency analyses of both the photometric and the spectroscopic data revealed the same two dominant frequencies. We also detected in the photometry the signal of nine more, significant frequencies located in the range 10-15c/d. The light and radial velocity curves follow a similar, stable double-wave pattern. We considered three different scenarios: binarity, co-existence of Gamma Doradus and Delta Scuti pulsations and rotational modulation. We confirm the occurrence of various independent Delta Scuti-type pressure modes in the Kepler light curve. However, we argue that the physical cause of low frequencies in the light and radial velocity variations of this late A-type star remain unexplained by any of the presently considered scenarios.

- We present the results of a time series analysis of 130 echelle spectra of {epsilon} Ori (B0 Ia), acquired over seven observing seasons between 1998 and 2006 at Ritter Observatory. The equivalent widths of H{alpha} (net) and HeI{lambda}5876 were measured and radial velocities were obtained from the central absorption of HeI{lambda}5876. Temporal variance spectra (TVS) revealed significant wind variability in both H{alpha} and HeI{lambda}5876. The HeI TVS have a double-peaked profile consistent with radial velocity oscillations. A periodicity search was carried out on the equivalent width and radial velocity data, as well as on wavelength-binned spectra. This analysis has revealed several periods in the variability with timescales of two to seven days. Many of these periods exhibit sinusoidal modulation in the associated phase diagrams. Several of these periods were present in both H{alpha} and HeI, indicating a possible connection between the wind and the photosphere. Due to the harmonic nature of these periods, stellar pulsations may be the origin of some of the observed variability. Periods on the order of the rotational period were also detected in the HeI line in the 1998-1999 season and in both lines during the 2004-2005 season. These periods may indicate rotational modulation due to structure in the wind.

- We report on high-resolution spectroscopy of the 2009.0 spectroscopic event of {eta} Carinae collected via SMARTS observations using the CTIO 1.5m telescope and echelle spectrograph. Our observations were made almost every night over a two-month interval around the photometric minimum of {eta} Car associated with the periastron passage of a hot companion. The photoionizing flux of the companion and heating related to colliding winds causes large changes in the wind properties of the massive primary star. Here we present an analysis of temporal variations in a sample of spectral lines that are clearly formed in the wind of the primary star. These lines are affected by a changing illumination of the flux of the secondary star during the periastron passage. We document the sudden onset of blueshifted absorption that occurred in most of the lines near or slightly after periastron, and we argue that these absorption components are seen when we view the relatively undisturbed wind of the foreground primary star. We present time series measurements of the net equivalent width of the wind lines and of the radial velocities of the absorption trough minima and the emission peak midpoints. Most lines decrease in emission strength around periastron, and those high excitation lines formed close to the primary exhibit a red-ward velocity excursion. We show how these trends can be explained using an illuminated hemisphere model that is based on the idea that the emission originates primarily from the side of the primary facing the hot companion.

- We have determined the spectroscopic orbits of five {gamma} Dor variables, HD776, HD6568, HD17310, HD19684, and HD62196. Their orbital periods range from 27.8 to 1163days and their eccentricities from 0.01 to 0.65. Of the five systems, only HD19684 shows lines of its binary companion, but those lines are always so weak and blended with the lines of the primary that we were unable to measure them satisfactorily. The velocity residuals of the orbital fits were searched for periodicities associated with pulsation. No clear, convincing case for velocity periodicities in the residuals was found in four of the five stars. However, for HD17310 we identified a period of 2.13434days, a value in agreement with the largest amplitude period previously found photometrically for that star. The velocity residuals of HD62196 have a long-term trend suggesting that it is a triple system.
