- We present the basic ideas and first results from the project we are carrying out at present, the search for and characterisation of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars among the members of Galactic young clusters. The observations of 10 southern clusters, nine of them located in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way are presented. We aim at listing candidate PMS member stars in young clusters. The catalogued stars will serve as a basis for future spectroscopic studies of individual objects to determine the properties of stellar formation in the last phases before the main sequence stage. Properties such as the presence of residual envelopes or disks, age spread among PMS members, and the possible presence of several episodes of star formation in the clusters, are to be addressed. Multicolour photometry in the UBVRcIc system has been obtained for 10 southern young clusters in the fourth Galactic quadrant, located between Galactic longitudes l=238 and l=310. For six clusters in the sample, the observations presented here provide the first published study based on CCD photometry. A quantitative comparison is performed with post-MS isochrones, and PMS isochrones from three different evolutionary models are used in the photometric membership analysis for possible PMS stars. The observations produce photometric indices in the Johnson-Cousins photometric systems for a total of 26962 stars. The matching of our pixel coordinates with corresponding fields in the 2MASS data base provides astrometric calibration for all catalogued stars and JHK 2MASS photometric indices for 60% of them. Post-MS cluster ages range from 4 to 60Myr, whereas the photometric membership analysis assigns PMS membership assignment to a total of 842 stars, covering an age range between 1 and 10Myr. This information on the PMS candidate members has been collected into a catalogue, named DAY-I, which contains 16 entries for 842 stars in the field of 10 southern clusters.

- We present results of optical spectroscopic and BVR_C_I_C_ photometric observations of 77 pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Cepheus flare region. A total of 64 of these are newly confirmed PMS stars, originally selected from various published candidate lists. We estimate effective temperatures and luminosities for the PMS stars, and comparing the results with PMS evolutionary models, we estimate stellar masses of 0.2-2.4M_{sun}_ and stellar ages of 0.1-15Myr. Among the PMS stars, we identify 15 visual binaries with separations of 2-10". From archival IRAS, Two Micron All Sky Survey, and Spitzer data, we construct their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and classify 5% of the stars as Class I, 10% as Flat SED, 60% as Class II, and 3% as Class III young stellar objects. We identify 12 classical T Tauri stars and two weak-line T Tauri stars as members of NGC 7023, with a mean age of 1.6Myr. The 13 PMS stars associated with L1228 belong to three small aggregates: RNO 129, L1228A, and L1228S. The age distribution of the 17 PMS stars associated with L1251 suggests that star formation has propagated with the expansion of the Cepheus flare shell. We detect sparse aggregates of ~6-7Myr old PMS stars around the dark clouds L1177 and L1219, at a distance of ~400pc. Three T Tauri stars appear to be associated with the Herbig Ae star SV Cep at a distance of 600pc. Our results confirm that the molecular complex in the Cepheus flare region contains clouds of various distances and star-forming histories.

- We present the discovery and characterisation of the post-common-envelope central star system in the planetary nebula PN G283.7-05.1. Deep images taken as part of the POPIPlaN survey indicate that the nebula may possess a bipolar morphology similar to other post-common-envelope planetary nebulae. Simultaneous light and radial velocity curve modelling reveals the newly discovered binary system to comprise a highly-irradiated, M-type main-sequence star in a 5.9 hour orbit with a hot pre-white-dwarf. The nebular progenitor is found to have a particularly low mass of around 0.4M_{sun}_, making PN G283.7-05.1 one of only a handful of candidate planetary nebulae to be the product of a common-envelope event while still on the red giant branch. Beyond its low mass, the model temperature, surface gravity and luminosity are all found to be consistent with the observed stellar and nebular spectra through comparison with model atmospheres and photoionisation modelling. However, the high temperature (Teff~95kK) and high luminosity of the central star of the nebula are not consistent with post-RGB evolutionary tracks.

- We present a detailed study of the stellar and orbital parameters of the post-common envelope binary central star of the planetary nebula Ou5. Low-resolution spectra obtained during the primary eclipse - to our knowledge the first isolated spectra of the companion to a post-common-envelope planetary nebula central star - were compared to catalogue spectra, indicating that the companion star is a late K- or early M-type dwarf. Simultaneous modelling of multi-band photometry and time-resolved radial velocity measurements was then used to independently determine the parameters of both stars as well as the orbital period and inclination. The modelling indicates that the companion star is low mass (~0.25M_{sun}_) and has a radius significantly larger than would be expected for its mass. Furthermore, the effective temperature and surface gravity of nebular progenitor, as derived by the modelling, do not lie on single-star post-AGB evolutionary tracks, instead being more consistent with a post-RGB evolution. However, an accurate determination of the component masses is challenging. This is principally due to the uncertainty on the locus of the spectral lines generated by the irradiation of the companion's atmosphere by the hot primary (used to derive companion star's radial velocities), as well as the lack of radial velocities of the primary.

- A variety of interesting objects such as Wolf-Rayet stars, tight OB associations, planetary nebulae, X-ray binaries, etc., can be discovered as point or compact sources in H{alpha} surveys. How these objects distribute through a galaxy sheds light on the galaxy star formation rate and history, mass distribution, and dynamics. The nearby galaxy M33 is an excellent place to study the distribution of H{alpha}-bright point sources in a flocculant spiral galaxy. We have reprocessed an archived WIYN continuum-subtracted H{alpha} image of the inner 6.5'x6.5' of M33 and, employing both eye and machine searches, have tabulated sources with a flux greater than approximately 10^-15^ erg/cm^2^/s. We have effectively recovered previously mapped H II regions and have identified 152 unresolved point sources and 122 marginally resolved compact sources, of which 39 have not been previously identified in any archive. An additional 99 H{alpha} sources were found to have sufficient archival flux values to generate a Spectral Energy Distribution. Using the SED, flux values, H{alpha} flux value, and compactness, we classified 67 of these sources.

- We have obtained optical multi-band polarimetry toward sightlines through the Chamaeleon I cloud, particularly in the vicinity of the young B9/A0 star HD 97300. We show, in agreement with earlier studies, that the radiation field impinging on the cloud in the projected vicinity of the star is dominated by the flux from the star, as evidenced by a local enhancement in the grain heating. By comparing the differential grain heating with the differential change in the location of the peak of the polarization curve, we show that the grain alignment is enhanced by the increase in the radiation field. We also find a weak, but measurable, variation in the grain alignment with the relative angle between the radiation field anisotropy and the magnetic field direction. Such an anisotropy in the grain alignment is consistent with a unique prediction of modern radiative alignment torque theory and provides direct support for radiatively driven grain alignment.

- Multiband linear polarimetric observations of 125 stars in the region of the cluster NGC1817 have been carried out intending to study properties of interstellar dust and grains in that direction. The polarization is found to be wavelength-dependent, being maximum in the V-band with an average value of 0.95%. The foreground interstellar dust grains appear to be the main source of linear polarization of starlight toward the direction of NGC1817. The average value of the position angle in the V-band of 119.2{deg} is found to be less than the direction of the Galactic parallel in the region, indicating that the dust grains in the direction are probably not yet relaxed. Spatial distribution of dust appears to be more diverse in the coronal region than the core region of the cluster. The maximum value of the degree of polarization is estimated to be 0.93% for members of the cluster using the Serkowski relation. The average value of wavelength corresponding to the maximum polarization of 0.54{+/-}0.02{mu}m indicates that the size distribution of dust grains in the line of sight is similar to that of the general interstellar medium. Several variable stars in the cluster were also observed polarimetrically and pulsating variables appear to have a slightly lower value of polarization from other nonvariable member stars of the cluster. There are indications of the existence of dust layers in front of those clusters which are located close to galactic plane while for clusters located away from galactic plane no major dust layers are observed.

- We present results based on the optical R-band observations of the polarization of 280 stars distributed toward the dark globule LDN1225. Parallaxes from Gaia data release 2 along with the polarization data of ~200 stars have been used to (a) constrain the distance of LDN 1225 as 830+/-83pc, (b) determine the contribution of interstellar polarization, and (c) characterize the dust properties and delineate the magnetic field (B-field) morphology of LDN 1225. We find that B-fields are more organized and exhibit a small dispersion of 12{deg}. Using the ^12^CO molecular line data from the Purple Mountain Observatory, along with the column density and dispersion in B-fields, we estimate the B-field strength to be ~56+/-10{mu}G, the ratio of magnetic to turbulent pressure to be ~3+/-2, and the ratio of mass to magnetic flux (in units of the critical value) to be <1. These results indicate the dominant role of B-fields in comparison to turbulence and gravity in rendering the cloud support. B-fields are aligned parallel to the low-density parts (traced by a ^12^CO map) of the cloud; in contrast, they are neither parallel nor perpendicular to the high-density core structures (traced by ^13^CO and C^18^O maps). LDN1225 hosts two 70{mu}m sources, which seem to be low-mass Class 0 sources. The ratio of total to selective extinction derived using optical and near-infrared photometric data is found to be anomalous (RV=3.4), suggesting the growth of dust grains in LDN 1225. The polarization efficiency of dust grains follows a power law with an index of -0.7, implying that optical polarimetry traces B-fields in the outer parts of the cloud.

- We present results of a spectroscopic survey of X-ray and proper-motion-selected samples of late-type stars in the Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC) and Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL) subgroups of the nearest OB association: Scorpius-Centaurus. The primary goals of the survey are to determine the star formation history of the OB subgroups and to assess the frequency of accreting stars in a sample dominated by "post-T Tauri" pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. We investigate two samples: (1) proper-motion candidates from the ACT Catalog (<I/246>) and Tycho Reference Catalog (TRC, <I/250>) with X-ray counterparts in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) Bright Source Catalog and (2) G- and K-type stars in the Hipparcos catalog found to be candidate members by de Zeeuw et al. (1999, Cat. <J/AJ/117/354>). We obtained optical spectra of 130 candidates with the Siding Spring 2.3m dual-beam spectrograph.

- We have calibrated and combined an extensive set of BVI observations of M67 to produce a colour-magnitude diagram of stars measured with high relative precision. We have selected stars that are most likely to be single-star members of the cluster using proper motion, radial velocity, and variability information from the literature, and an examination of the most probable colour-magnitude diagram locations of unresolved stellar blends. We have made detailed comparisons of our photometry of the selected stars with theoretical models, and discuss the most notable discrepancies. Observations of M67 turn-off stars are a severe test of algorithms attempting to describe convective cores in the limit of small extent, and we find strong evidence of a 'hook' just fainter than the turn-off gap. The stars in M67 support assertions that the degree of convective core overshooting decreases to zero for stars with masses in the range 1.0<(M/M_{sun}_)<=1.5, but that the degree of overshoot is smaller than currently used in published isochrones. We also verify that all current theoretical models for the lower main sequence (with the exception of Baraffe et al., 1998, Cat. J/A+A/337/403) are too blue for MV>~6, even when the sequences are shifted to match M67 near the MV of the Sun, probably due to a combination of problems with colour-Teff transformations and realistic surface boundary conditions for models. Finally, we identify a subset of cluster members with unusual photometry (candidate red giant binaries, blue straggler stars, and triple systems) deserving of further study.
