- Description:
- Building on the CMT_1_ photometric database presented in Paper I (Cat. <J/AJ/128/712>), in this paper we derive the large-scale properties of the globular cluster system (GCS) in NGC 5128, the nearest giant elliptical and the dominant galaxy in the Centaurus group. Using the metallicity-sensitive C-T_1_ color index, we discuss the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for a subsample of 211 previously identified clusters, all on a homogeneous photometric system. We find the MDF to be strongly bimodal, with metallicity peaks at [Fe/H]=-1.55 and -0.55 and with nearly equal numbers of clusters in each of the metal-poor and metal-rich modes. Finally, we present a list of 327 new cluster candidates not identified in any previous surveys; most of these are in the less well studied bulge region of the galaxy and along the minor axis.

- Description:
- We present Washington CT_1_T_2_ photometry of a field central to the Bootes I dwarf spheroidal galaxy, which was discovered as a stellar overdensity in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR5). We show that the Washington filters are much more effective than the Sloan filters in separating the metal-poor turn-off stars in the dwarf galaxy from the foreground stars. We detect 165 objects in the field, and statistically determine that just over 40% of the objects are nonmembers. Our statistical analysis mostly agrees with radial velocity measurements of the brighter stars. We find that there is a distinct main-sequence turn-off and subgiant branch, where there is some evidence of a spread in chemical abundance.

- Description:
- We present physical properties of radio galaxies (RGs) with f_1.4GHz_>1mJy discovered by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) and Very Large Array Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey. For 1056 FIRST RGs at 0<z<=1.7 with HSC counterparts in about 100deg^2^, we compiled multi-wavelength data of optical, near-infrared (IR), mid-IR, far-IR, and radio (150MHz). We derived their color excess (E(B-V)_*_), stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), IR luminosity, the ratio of IR and radio luminosity (q_IR_), and radio spectral index ({alpha}_radio_) that are derived from the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE. We also estimated Eddington ratio based on stellar mass and integration of the best-fit SEDs of active galactic nucleus (AGN) component. We found that E(B-V)_*_, SFR, and IR luminosity clearly depend on redshift while stellar mass, q_IR_, and {alpha}_radio_ do not significantly depend on redshift. Since optically faint (i_AB_>=21.3) RGs that are newly discovered by our RG survey tend to be high redshift, they tend to not only have a large dust extinction and low stellar mass but also have high SFR and AGN luminosity, high IR luminosity, and high Eddington ratio compared with optically bright ones. The physical properties of a fraction of RGs in our sample seem to differ from a classical view of RGs with massive stellar mass, low SFR, and low Eddington ratio, demonstrating that our RG survey with HSC and FIRST provides us curious RGs among entire RG population.

- Westerlund 2 UBVIc photometry
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/446/3797
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present deep UBVI_c_ photometric data of the young open cluster Westerlund 2. An abnormal reddening law of R_V,cl_=4.14+/-0.08 was found for the highly reddened early-type members (E(B-V)>=1.45), whereas a fairly normal reddening law of R_V,fg_=3.33+/-0.03 was confirmed for the foreground early-type stars (E(B-V)_fg_<1.05). The distance modulus was determined from zero-age main-sequence fitting to the reddening-corrected colour-magnitude diagram of the early-type members to be V_0_-M_V_=13.9+/-0.14 (random error) _-0.1_^+0.4^ (the upper limit of systematic error) mag (d=6.0+/-0.4_-0.3_^+1.2^kpc). To obtain te initial mass function, pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars were selected by identifying the optical counterparts of Chandra X-ray sources and mid-infrared emission stars from the Spitzer GLIMPSE (Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire) source catalogue. The initial mass function shows a shallow slope of {Gamma}=-1.1+/-0.1 down to log(m)=0.7. The total mass of Westerlund 2 is estimated to be at least 7400M_{sun}_. The age of Westerlund 2 from the main-sequence turn-on and PMS stars is estimated to be <~1.5Myr. We confirmed the existence of a clump of PMS stars located ~1-arcmin north of the core of Westerlund 2, but we could not find any clear evidence for an age difference between the core and the northern clump.

- Wide field imagers ground-based astrometry. V.
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/563/A80
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- High-precision astrometry requires accurate point-spread function modeling and accurate geometric-distortion corrections. This paper demonstrates that it is possible to achieve both requirements with data collected at the High Acuity Wide-field K-band Imager (HAWK-I); a wide-field imager installed at the Nasmyth focus of UT4/VLT ESO 8m telescope. Our final astrometric precision reaches ~3mas per coordinate for a well exposed star in a single image, with a systematic error less than 0.1mas. We constructed calibrated astro-photometric catalogs and atlases of 7 fields: the Baade's window, NGC 6656, NGC 6121, NGC 6822, NGC 6388, NGC 104, and the James Webb Space Telescope calibration field (in the LMC). We make these catalogs and images electronically available to the community. Furthermore, as a demonstration of the efficacy of our approach, combining archival material taken with the optical wide-field imager at the MPI/ESO 2.2m with HAWK-I observations, we are able to achieve an excellent separation between cluster members and field objects for NGC 6656 and NGC 6121 with a time base-line of about 8 years. Using both HST and HAWK-I data, we also study the radial distribution of the SGB populations in NGC 6656 and conclude that the radial trend is flat, within our uncertains. We also provide membership probabilities for most of the stars in NGC 6656 and NGC 6121 catalogs and estimate membership for the published variable stars in these two fields.

- Wide-field spectrosc. survey of GCs in Virgo cluster
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/835/212
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the results of a wide-field spectroscopic survey of globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo cluster. We obtain spectra for 201 GCs and 55 ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) using Hectospec on the Multiple-Mirror Telescope and derive their radial velocities. We identify 46 genuine intracluster GCs (IGCs), not associated with any Virgo galaxies, using the 3D GMM test on the spatial and radial velocity distribution. They are located at a projected distance 200kpc<~R<~500kpc from the center of M87. The radial velocity distribution of these IGCs shows two peaks, one at v_r_=1023km/s, associated with the Virgo main body, and another at v_r_=36km/s, associated with the infalling structure. The velocity dispersion of the IGCs in the Virgo main body is {sigma}_GC_~314km/s, which is smoothly connected to the velocity dispersion profile of M87 GCs but is much lower than that of dwarf galaxies in the same survey field, {sigma}_dwarf_~608km/s. The UCDs are more centrally concentrated on massive galaxies-M87, M86, and M84. The radial velocity dispersion of the UCD system is much smaller than that of dwarf galaxies. Our results confirm the large-scale distribution of Virgo IGCs indicated by previous photometric surveys. The color distribution of the confirmed IGCs shows a bimodality similar to that of M87 GCs. This indicates that most IGCs are stripped off dwarf galaxies and some off massive galaxies in the Virgo.

- Description:
- The WIde-field Nearby Galaxy clusters Survey (WINGS) is a project whose primary goal is to study the galaxy populations in clusters in the local universe, and of the influence of environment on their stellar populations. This survey has provided the astronomical community with a high quality set of photometric and spectroscopic data for 77 and 48 nearby galaxy clusters, respectively. We present the catalog containing the properties of galaxies observed by the wings spectroscopic survey, which were derived using stellar populations synthesis modelling approach. We also check the consistency of our results with other data in the literature. Using a spectrophotometric model that reproduces the main features of observed spectra by summing the theoretical spectra of simple stellar populations of different ages, we derive the stellar masses, star formation histories, average age and dust attenuation of galaxies in our sample. ~5300 spectra were analyzed with spectrophotometric techniques, and this allowed to derive the star formation history, stellar masses and ages, and extinction for the wings spectroscopic sample that we present in this paper. The comparison with the total mass values of the same galaxies derived by other authors based on sdss data, confirms the reliability of the adopted methods and data.

- WIYN open cluster study. LXII. Photometry of M35
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/148/85
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The current generation of stellar isochrone models exhibits non-negligible discrepancies due to variations in the input physics. The success of each model is determined by how well it fits the observations, and this paper aims to disentangle contributions from the various physical inputs. New deep, wide-field optical and near-infrared photometry (UBVRIJHK_S_) of the cluster M35 is presented, against which several isochrone systems are compared: Padova, PARSEC, Dartmouth, and Y^2^. Two different atmosphere models are applied to each isochrone: ATLAS9 and BT-Settl. For any isochrone set and atmosphere model, observed data are accurately reproduced for all stars more massive than 0.7M_{sun}_. For stars less massive than 0.7M_{sun}_, Padova and PARSEC isochrones consistently produce higher temperatures than observed. Dartmouth and Y^2^ isochrones with BT-Settl atmospheres reproduce optical data accurately; however, they appear too blue in IR colors. It is speculated that molecular contributions to stellar spectra in the near-infrared may not be fully explored, and that future study may reconcile these differences.

- WIYN open cluster study. LXXX. Photometry of NGC 7142
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/159/246
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present UBVRI photometry of 8702 stars in a 0.5x0.5{deg} field in the direction of NGC7142, taken with the Half Degree Imager at the WIYN 0.9m telescope, to improve knowledge of this cluster's basic parameters. Our photometry spans the ranges 10.6-20.4mag in U, 10.6-22.0mag in B, 10.0-21.8mag in V, 9.2-20.7mag in R, and 8.5-19.9mag in I. Using color-color diagrams that employ all four color combinations that include U, versus B-V, we derive a reddening-metallicity relation for the cluster, with preferred values E(B-V)=0.338{+/-}0.031mag for the left-edge fiducial of the main sequence and [Fe/H]=0.0{+/-}0.1dex, where the Hyades cluster has been used as an unreddened reference cluster, the extinction relations of Cardelli have been employed, and the metallicity dependence of the Yonsei-Yale (Y^2^) isochrones has been assumed. Comparison of our data to the Y^2^ isochrones in multiple color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) yields distance-metallicity and age-metallicity relations, with preferred values of m-M=12.65{+/-}0.23 mag and age=4.0_+1.3_^-0.7^Gyr. Re-evaluation of the parameters of M67 using Stetson's UBVI photometry yields [Fe/H]=-0.02{+/-}0.05dex, E(B-V)=0.04{+/-}0.01mag, m-M=9.75{+/-}0.03mag, and age=3.85{+/-}0.17Gyr; we thus find the metallicity and age of the two clusters to be indistinguishable. A semi-independent analysis adopting the parameters of M67 and shifting the fiducials of the two clusters in six CMDs until they match strongly corroborates the values listed above. The differences between our inferred parallaxes and the Gaia DR2 values are 87{+/-}60{mu}as for NGC7142 and 48{+/-}15{mu}as for M67, consistent with previous studies.

- WOCS LXXIX. M48. I. WIYN/Hydra spectra for M48 stars
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- WIYN/Hydra spectra (R~13500, signal-to-noise=50-1000/pixel) of a 400{AA} region around Li 6708{AA} are used to determine radial and rotational velocities for 287 photometrically selected candidate members of the open cluster M48. The sample ranges from turnoff A stars to late-K dwarfs and eight giants. We combine our radial velocity (V_RAD_) measurements and power spectrum analysis with parallax and proper motion data from Gaia DR2 to evaluate membership and multiplicity. We classify 152 stars as single cluster members, 11 as binary members, 16 as members of uncertain multiplicity, 56 as single nonmembers, 28 as single "likely" nonmembers, two as single "likely" members, one as a binary "likely" member, five as binary nonmembers, 10 as "likely" members of uncertain multiplicity, three as nonmembers of uncertain multiplicity, and three as "likely" nonmembers of uncertain multiplicity. From a subsample of 95 single members, we derive V_RAD_=8.512{+/-}0.087km/s ({sigma}_{mu}_, and {sigma}=0.848km/s). Using 16 isolated Fe I lines for a subsample of 99 single members (that have {sigma}_Teff_<75K (from 10 colors from UBVRI), vsini<25km/s, and well-behaved Fe I lines), [Fe/H]M48=-0.063{+/-}0.007dex ({sigma}_{mu}_). [Fe/H] is independent of Teff over an unprecedentedly large range of 2500K. The minimum cluster binary fraction is 11%-21%. M48 exhibits a clear but modest broadening of the main-sequence turnoff, and there is no correlation between color and vsini.
