- CCD photometric observations of the eclipsing contact binaries (EW type) V3 and V4 of the cluster NGC 2539 were made in the B and V bands using the 2m telescope at the IUCAA-Girawali Observatory in India. The light curves have been obtained and using the Wilson-Devinney code, the combined photometric solutions have been presented here. The photometric solutions have revealed that both V3 and V4 are W-type contact binary systems with mass ratios of 0.806 and 1.001 respectively. Revised orbital periods, absolute masses and radii of the components have been obtained.

- Studying giant star-forming clumps in distant galaxies is important to understand galaxy formation and evolution. At present, however, observers and theorists have not reached a consensus on whether the observed "clumps" in distant galaxies are the same phenomenon that is seen in simulations. In this paper, as a step to establish a benchmark of direct comparisons between observations and theories, we publish a sample of clumps constructed to represent the commonly observed "clumps" in the literature. This sample contains 3193 clumps detected from 1270 galaxies at 0.5<=z<3.0. The clumps are detected from rest-frame UV images, as described in our previous paper. Their physical properties (e.g., rest-frame color, stellar mass (M*), star formation rate (SFR), age, and dust extinction) are measured by fitting the spectral energy distribution (SED) to synthetic stellar population models. We carefully test the procedures of measuring clump properties, especially the method of subtracting background fluxes from the diffuse component of galaxies. With our fiducial background subtraction, we find a radial clump U-V color variation, where clumps close to galactic centers are redder than those in outskirts. The slope of the color gradient (clump color as a function of their galactocentric distance scaled by the semimajor axis of galaxies) changes with redshift and M* of the host galaxies: at a fixed M*, the slope becomes steeper toward low redshift, and at a fixed redshift, it becomes slightly steeper with M*. Based on our SED fitting, this observed color gradient can be explained by a combination of a negative age gradient, a negative E(B-V) gradient, and a positive specific SFR gradient of the clumps. We also find that the color gradients of clumps are steeper than those of intra-clump regions. Correspondingly, the radial gradients of the derived physical properties of clumps are different from those of the diffuse component or intra-clump regions.

- We report on a deep spectroscopic survey for star-to-star CN variations along the main sequence (MS) of the globular cluster 47 Tuc with ESO's Very Large Telescope. We find a significant bimodal distribution in the S(3839) index for main-sequence stars in the mass range ~0.85 to 0.65M_{sun}_, or from the main-sequence turnoff down to ~2.5 mag below the main-sequence turnoff. An anticorrelation of CN and CH is evident on the MS. The result is discussed in the context of the ability of faint MS stars to alter their surface composition through internal evolutionary effects. We argue against internal stellar evolution as the only origin for the abundance spread in 47 Tuc; an external origin such as pollution seems to be more likely.

- We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations of an unusual luminous blue variable (LBV) in NGC 3432, covering three major outbursts in 2008 October, 2009 April and 2009 November. Previously, this star experienced an outburst also in 2000 (known as SN 2000ch). During outbursts the star reached an absolute magnitude between -12.1 and -12.8. Its spectrum showed H, HeI and FeII lines with P-Cygni profiles during and soon after the eruptive phases, while only intermediate-width lines in pure emission (including HeII {lambda}4686) were visible during quiescence. The fast-evolving light curve soon after the outbursts, the quasi-modulated light curve, the peak magnitude and the overall spectral properties are consistent with multiple episodes of variability of an extremely active LBV. However, the widths of the spectral lines indicate unusually high wind velocities (1500-2800km/s), similar to those observed in Wolf-Rayet stars. Although modulated light curves are typical of LBVs during the S-Dor variability phase, the luminous maxima and the high frequency of outbursts are unexpected in S-Dor variables.

- The light curves of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are powered by the radioactive decay of ^56^Ni to ^56^Co at early times, and the decay of ^56^Co to ^56^Fe from ~60 d after explosion. We examine the evolution of the [CoIII] {lambda}5893 emission complex during the nebular phase for SNe Ia with multiple nebular spectra and show that the line flux follows the square of the mass of ^56^Co as a function of time. This result indicates both efficient local energy deposition from positrons produced in ^56^Co decay and long-term stability of the ionization state of the nebula. We compile SN Ia nebular spectra from the literature and present 21 new late-phase spectra of 7 SNe Ia, including SN 2014J. From these we measure the flux in the [CoIII] {lambda}5893 line and remove its well-behaved time dependence to infer the initial mass of ^56^Ni (M_Ni_) produced in the explosion. We then examine ^56^Ni yields for different SN Ia ejected masses (M_ej_ - calculated using the relation between light-curve width and ejected mass) and find that the ^56^Ni masses of SNe Ia fall into two regimes: for narrow light curves (low stretch s~0.7-0.9), M_Ni_ is clustered near M_Ni_~0.4M_{sun}_ and shows a shallow increase as M_ej_ increases from ~1 to 1.4M_{sun}_; at high stretch, M_ej_ clusters at the Chandrasekhar mass (1.4M_{sun}_) while M_Ni_ spans a broad range from 0.6 to 1.2M_{sun}_. This could constitute evidence for two distinct SN Ia explosion mechanisms.

- We present the first X-ray study of Collinder 261 (Cr261), which at an age of 7Gyr is one of the oldest open clusters known in the Galaxy. Our observation with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory is aimed at uncovering the close interacting binaries in Cr261, and reaches a limiting X-ray luminosity of L_X_~4x10^29^erg/s (0.3-7keV) for stars in the cluster. We detect 107 sources within the cluster half-mass radius r_h_, and we estimate that among the sources with L_X_>~10^30^erg/s, ~26 are associated with the cluster. We identify a mix of active binaries and candidate active binaries, candidate cataclysmic variables, and stars that have "straggled" from the main locus of Cr261 in the color-magnitude diagram. Based on a deep optical source catalog of the field, we estimate that Cr261 has an approximate mass of 6500M_{sun}_, roughly the same as the old open cluster NGC6791. The X-ray emissivity of Cr261 is similar to that of other old open clusters, supporting the trend that they are more luminous in X-rays per unit mass than old populations of higher (globular clusters) and lower (the local neighborhood) stellar density. This implies that the dynamical destruction of binaries in the densest environments is not solely responsible for the observed differences in X-ray emissivity.

- In this paper we present and analyze new CCD UBVRI photometry down to V~21 in the region of the young open cluster Collinder 232, located in the Carina spiral arm, and discuss its relationship to Trumpler 14 and Trumpler 16, the two most prominent young open clusters located in the core of NGC 3372 (the Carina Nebula).
