- Description:
- We present the results of VRI photometry of the young open cluster IC 2602. Two 15x15arcmin^2^ fields were observed in February and May 1991 using the 1-m Swope telescope at Las Campanas. Using theoretical isochrones obtained from D'Antona & Mazzitelli (1994ApJS...90..467D), and allowing for observational and other uncertainties, we identify 78 primary candidate members with 12<V<18.5 from their positions on colour-magnitude diagrams. We compare the cluster field with an offset field of similar galactic latitude and estimate the contamination due to background stars to be large, >=50%, as might be expected given its low galactic latitude. We also compare our photometry with that given for the X-ray detected stars of Randich et al. (1995A&A...300..134R) present complimentary narrow band H{alpha} photometry for a subset of the stars.

- Description:
- We present a near-infrared (K'-band) survey of 0.7 square degree area in the {alpha} Persei open cluster (age=90Myr, distance=182pc) carried out with the Omega-Prime camera on the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope. Combining optical data (Rc and Ic) obtained with the KPNO/MOSA detector and presented in Stauffer et al. (1999ApJ...527..219S; S99) with the K' observations, a sample of new candidate members has been extracted from the optical-infrared colour-magnitude diagram. The location of these candidates in the colour-colour diagram suggests that two-thirds of them are actually reddened background giants. About 20 new candidate members with masses between 0.3 and 0.04M_{sun}_ are added to the ~400 known Alpha Per cluster members. If they are indeed Alpha Per members, four of the new candidates would be brown dwarfs. We discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the near-infrared survey as compared to the optical selection method. We also describe the outcome of optical spectroscopy obtained with the Twin spectrograph on the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope for about 30 candidates, including selected members from the optical sample presented in Barrado y Navascues et al. (2002, Cat. <J/A+A/395/813>) and from our joint optical/infrared catalogue. These results argue in favour of the optical selection method for this particular cluster.

- Description:
- We present the first deep, optical, wide-field imaging survey of the young open cluster Collinder 359, complemented by near-infrared follow-up observations. This study is part of a large programme aimed at examining the dependence of the mass function on environment and time. We have surveyed 1.6 square degrees in the cluster, in the I and z filters, with the CFH12K camera on the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m telescope down to completeness and detection limits in both filters of 22.0 and 24.0mag, respectively. Based on their location in the optical (I-z,I) colour-magnitude diagram, we have extracted new cluster member candidates in Collinder 359 spanning 1.3-0.03M_{sun}_, assuming an age of 60Myr and a distance of 450pc for the cluster. We have used the 2MASS database as well as our own near-infrared photometry to examine the membership status of the optically-selected cluster candidates. Comparison of the location of the most massive members in Collinder 359 in a (B-V,V) diagram with theoretical isochrones suggests that Collinder 359 is older than Alpha Per but younger than the Pleiades. We discuss the possible relationship between Collinder 359 and IC 4665 as both clusters harbour similar parameters, including proper motion, distance, and age.

- King 5 and Berkeley 20 UBVRI photometry
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/372/71

- CDS
- Description:
- We present multicolour CCD photometry for two poorly studied open clusters (King 5 and Be 20). Photometry for a field near King 5 was also carried out to estimate the contamination by field stars. The colour magnitude diagrams (CMD) of the clusters show a well defined main sequence extending to the limit of the photometry, V~=20mag. The reddening for King 5, estimated from the colour-colour diagram, is ~0.82, whereas that for Be 20 as estimated by comparing theoretical main-sequence (MS) with the observed MS is 0.10. The morphology of the CMDs indicates that these clusters are old. The CMD of Be 20 shows a globular cluster-like horizontal branch. In case of King 5 the comparison of observational CMDs with the standard isochrones of VandenBerg (1985ApJS...58..711V) indicates an apparent discrepancy between the shape of the turnoff and isochrones. The CMDs of King 5 seem to be better understood in terms of stellar models with convective overshoot. The comparison of the CMDs with the stellar models by Bertelli et al. (1985A&A...150...33B) with convective overshoot produces a good fit for a metallicity Z=0.008 and an age of 1Gyr for King 5 and 5Gyr for Be 20. An apparent distance modulus (m-M)=14.0 and 15.1 has been estimated for King 5 and Be 20 respectively. They correspond to a distance of 1900+/-100pc and 9026+/-480pc, respectively. The radial density distribution in King 5 indicates that there is an excess of low mass stars in the outer region of the cluster, whereas the density distribution in Be 20 shows a good fit with the empirical King (1962AJ.....67..471K) model. For both clusters, observations have also been carried out to search for variable stars.

- Description:
- We have identified a large sample of probable low-mass members of the young open cluster IC 2391 based on optical (VRIZ) and infrared (JHKs) photometry. Our sample includes 50 probable members and 82 possible members, both very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. We also provide accurate positions for these stars and brown dwarf candidates derived from red UK Schmidt plates measured using the microdensitometer SuperCOSMOS. Assuming an age of 53Myr, we estimate that we have reached a mass of 0.025M_{sun}_, if the identified objects are indeed members of IC 2391.

- Description:
- New 4-colour BV(RI)_KC_ CCD photometry to a limiting magnitude of V=~19 is presented for 1428 objects observed towards the direction of the young, open cluster IC 2391. We observed 36 (2'x3') fields within 17arcmin of the nominal cluster core. By fitting the theoretical isochrones of D'Antona & Mazzitelli (1994ApJS...90..467D) to a combination of colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams, we have identified 17 stars as probable cluster members with a further 85 stars as possible members. The brightness distribution of low-mass members is compared with the luminosity function observed for the Pleiades and we estimate that the contamination due to background giants should be small.

- Description:
- Open clusters are often used as tracers for the formation and evolution of the Milky Way. But they can also be used to study distinct "local stellar populations" and all kind of stellar groups. All these studies crucially depend on their unambiguous detection and classification separating them from the fore- and background field population. Still more than one third of the catalogued galactic open clusters are unstudied to date. We have chosen three northern open cluster fields, namely NGC 3231, NGC 7055, and NGC 7127 which have been never studied before to shed more light on their true nature. We present Johnson-Cousins BVRI photometry down to V=19mag. After the transformation to the standard systems, colour-magnitude diagrams were generated. These diagrams were used to fit solar abundant isochrones to determine the distance modulus, reddening and apparent age of the main sequences. From the analysis of the colour-magnitude diagrams and the available proper motions we conclude that NGC 7055 and NGC 7127 are young, real, open clusters. NGC 3231, on the other hand, is probably a high galactic latitude open cluster remnant.

- Description:
- We present CCD photometry of two southern open clusters. As part of the Bologna Open Cluster Chemical Evolution project we obtained BVI and UBVI imaging for NGC 2849 and NGC 6134, respectively. By means of the synthetic colour-magnitude diagram method and using various evolutionary sets of stellar evolution tracks with various metallicities, we determined at the same time age, distance and reddening. We also determined an approximate metallicity for NGC 2849, for which the information is not available from sounder methods like high-resolution spectroscopy. NGC 2849 turned to be 0.85-1.0Gyr old with a solar metallicity. The foreground reddening is E(B-V)=0.28-0.32, and the true distance modulus (m-M)_0_=13.8-13.9. For NGC 6134 we did not obtain fully consistent answers from the V, B-V and V, V-I photometry, an unexpected problem, since both the metallicity and the reddening are known (from high-resolution spectroscopy and the U-B, B-V two colours diagram, respectively). This may either indicate a difficulty of current models (evolutionary tracks and/or models of atmosphere) to accurately reproduce colours, or be related to differences in the metal mixture assumed by the models and those of the clusters. Assuming the spectroscopic abundance and the colour excess [E(B-V)=0.35] from the U-B, B-V plot, we derived a best age between 0.82 and 0.95Gyr and a distance modulus 10.5.

- Description:
- We present the results of CCD UBV observations of the open cluster NGC 6819. We calculated the stellar density profile in the cluster's field to determine the structural parameters of NGC 6819. Using the existing astrometric data, we calculated the probabilities of the stars being physical members of the cluster, and used these objects in the determination of the astrophysical parameters of NGC 6819. We inferred the reddening and metallicity of the cluster as E(B-V)=0.130+/-0.035mag and [Fe/H]=+0.051+/-0.020dex, respectively, using the U-B vs B-V two-colour diagram and UV excesses of the F-G type main-sequence stars. We fit the colour-magnitude diagrams of NGC 6819 with the PARSEC isochrones and derived the distance modula, distance and age of the cluster as mu_V=12.22+/-0.10mag, d=2309+/-106pc and t=2.4+/-0.2Gyr, respectively. The parameters of the galactic orbit estimated for NGC 6819 indicate that the cluster is orbiting in a slightly eccentric orbit of e=0.06 with a period of P_orb_=142Myr. The slope of the mass function estimated for the cluster is close to the one found for the stars in the solar neighbourhood.
