- Elemental abundances analyses are performed for the Mercury-Manganese stars {upsilon} Her, {phi} Her, and HR 7018 consistent with previous studies of this series using spectrograms obtained with Reticon and CCD detectors. Comparisons of the first two analyses with those performed using coadded photographic plates show the general consistency of the derived elemental abundances. For {upsilon} Her and for {phi} Her, abundances were newly found for O, and for Al, V, Zn, and Ce, respectively. HR 7018 is discovered to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary. Its Sc abundance is the smallest of any class member with derived abundances and its Sr abundance the largest of any known HgMn star. A correlation analysis of the most complete abundance sets for 20 HgMn stars shows that the abundances of some elements are correlated with one another and some are functions of the stellar effective temperature.

- A catalogue of uvby-{beta} photometry for 87 of the turn-off and subgiant stars from the HK survey of Beers et al. (1992AJ....103.1987B, BPSII) is given. Most of these stars have [Fe/H]<=2.5. These photometric data have been taken and reduced using the same techniques as in our previous two uvby-{beta} catalogues (Schuster et al., 1989, Cat. <II/180> and Schuster et al., 1993, Cat. <J/A+AS/97/951>). An error analysis has been made; typical mean observational errors for a star with V=14.2m are 0.008, 0.007, 0.011, 0.010 and 0.012 in V, (b-y), m_1_, c_1_ and {beta}, respectively. Our photometric data are also compared to the UBV photometry and spectral indices from the HK survey; satisfactory agreement is found indicating good quality for the two data sets. The stars are classified in reddening-free diagrams of the uvby-{beta} system; several of the stars are found to have been mis-classified in the HK survey. Two metal-poor supergiants, three (possibly four) horizontal branch stars, one blue subluminous star and two stars with ambiguous photometry have been identified. Stellar parameters, such as E(b-y), M_V_, {delta}M_V_, and T_eff_, plus error estimates for these parameters, are provided using our photometric calibrations. Although all stars have galactic latitudes |b|>=30{deg} many of them are significantly reddened with E(b-y) ranging from 0.02 to 0.15. The average reddening towards the South Galactic Pole region, b<-60{deg}, is E(b-y)=0.027+/-0.004 corresponding to E(B-V)=0.036+/-0.005 in contrast to the low value of E(B-V)~0.01 derived from the Burstein & Heiles (1982AJ.....87.1165B) maps. The stars are analyzed in the (b-y)_0_, [Fe/H] diagram, and individual ages estimated using the isochrones of VandenBerg & Bell (1985ApJS...58..561V) and of Bergbusch & VandenBerg (1992ApJS...81..163B). These very metal-poor stars are found to be coeval, within 1-2Gyr, with the halo and thick-disk stars studied previously, with a mean age in excess of 18Gyr. Several blue "thick-disk" stars, which are perhaps analogous to the "blue metal-poor" stars of Preston et al. (1994, Cat. <J/AJ/108/538>), have been identified.

- The circumgalactic medium (CGM) can be probed through the analysis of absorbing systems in the line of sight to bright background quasars. We present measurements of the metallicity of a new sample of 15 sub-damped Lyman {alpha} absorbers (sub-DLAs, defined as absorbers with 19.0 z_abs_<=3.104 from the ESO Ultra-Violet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) Advanced Data Products Quasar Sample (EUADP). We combine these results with other measurements from the literature to produce a compilation of metallicity measurements for 92 sub-DLAs as well as a sample of 362 DLAs. We apply a multi-element analysis to quantify the amount of dust in these two classes of systems. We find that either the element depletion patterns in these systems differ from the Galactic depletion patterns or they have a different nucleosynthetic history than our own Galaxy. We propose a new method to derive the velocity width of absorption profiles, using the modelled Voigt profile features. The correlation between the velocity width {Delta}V_90_ of the absorption profile and the metallicity is found to be tighter for DLAs than for sub-DLAs. We report hints of a bimodal distribution in the [Fe/H] metallicity of low redshift (z<1.25) sub-DLAs, which is unseen at higher redshifts. This feature can be interpreted as a signature from the metal-poor, accreting gas and the metal-rich, outflowing gas, both being traced by sub-DLAs at low redshifts.

- We have observed three fields of the Coma Cluster of galaxies with a narrowband (modified Stroemgren) filter system. Observed galaxies include 31 in the vicinity of NGC 4889, 48 near NGC 4874, and 60 near NGC 4839, complete to M_5500_=-18 in all three subclusters. Spectrophotometric classification finds all three subclusters of Coma to be dominated by red, E-type (elliptical/S0) galaxies with a mean blue fraction, f_B_, of 0.10.

- We present 44 validated planets from the 10th observing campaign of the NASA K2 mission, as well as high-resolution spectroscopy and speckle imaging follow-up observations. These 44 planets come from an initial set of 72 vetted candidates, which we subjected to a validation process incorporating pixel-level analyses, light curve analyses, observational constraints, and statistical false positive probabilities. Our validated planet sample has median values of R_p_=2.2 R_{Earth}_, P_orb_=6.9 days, T_eq_=890 K, and J=11.2 mag. Of particular interest are four ultra-short period planets (P_orb_~<1 day), 16 planets smaller than 2 R_{Earth}_, and two planets with large predicted amplitude atmospheric transmission features orbiting infrared-bright stars. We also present 27 planet candidates, most of which are likely to be real and worthy of further observations. Our validated planet sample includes 24 new discoveries and has enhanced the number of currently known super-Earths (R_p_~1-2 R_{Earth}_), sub-Neptunes (R_p_~2-4 R_{Earth}_), and sub-Saturns (R_p_~4-8 R_{Earth}_) orbiting bright stars (J=8-10 mag) by ~4%, ~17%, and ~11%, respectively.

- We present vanadium (V) abundances for 255 metal-poor stars derived from high-resolution optical spectra from the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrograph on the Magellan Telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory, the Robert G. Tull Coude Spectrograph on the Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory, and the High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We use updated VI and VII atomic transition data from recent laboratory studies, and we increase the number of lines examined (from one to four lines of VI, and from two to seven lines of VII). As a result, we reduce the V abundance uncertainties for most stars by more than 20% and expand the number of stars with V detections from 204 to 255. In the metallicity range -4.0<[Fe/H]{<}-1.0, we calculate the mean ratios [VI/FeI]=-0.10+/-0.01 ({sigma}=0.16) from 128 stars with >=2VI lines detected, [VII/FeII]=+0.13+/-0.01 ({sigma}=0.16) from 220 stars with >=2 VII lines detected, and [VII/VI]=+0.25+/-0.01 ({sigma}=0.15) from 119 stars. We suspect that this offset is due to departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium, and we recommend using [VII/FeII], which is enhanced relative to the solar ratio, as a better representation of [V/Fe]. We provide more extensive evidence for abundance correlations detected previously among scandium, titanium, and vanadium, and we identify no systematic effects in the analysis that can explain these correlations.

- M-dwarf spectra are complex and notoriously difficult to model, posing challenges to understanding their photospheric properties and compositions in depth. Vanadium (V) is an iron-group element whose abundance supposedly closely tracks that of iron, but has origins that are not completely understood. Our aim is to characterize a series of neutral vanadium atomic absorption lines in the 800-910nm wavelength region of high signal-to-noise, high-resolution, telluric-corrected M-dwarf spectra from the CARMENES survey. Many of these lines are prominent and exhibit a distinctive broad and flat-bottom shape -- a result of hyperfine splitting (HFS). We investigate the potential and implications of these HFS-split lines for abundance analysis of cool stars. With standard spectral synthesis routines, as provided by the spectroscopy software iSpec and the latest atomic data (including HFS) available from the VALD3 database, we model these striking line profiles. We use them to measure V abundances of cool dwarfs. We determine V abundances for 135 early-M dwarfs (M0.0V to M3.5V) in the CARMENES guaranteed time observations sample. They exhibit a [V/Fe]-[Fe/H] trend consistent with that derived from nearby FG dwarfs. The tight (+/-0.1dex) correlation between [V/H] and [Fe/H] suggests the potential application of V as an alternative metallicity indicator in M dwarfs. We also show hints that a neglect to model HFS could partially explain the temperature correlation in V abundance measurements observed in previous studies of samples involving dwarf stars with Teff<=5300K. Our work suggests that HFS can impact certain absorption lines in cool photospheres more severely than in Sun-like ones. Therefore, we advocate that HFS should be carefully treated in abundance studies in stars cooler than ~5000 K. On the other hand, strong HFS split lines in high-resolution spectra present an opportunity for precision chemical analyses of large samples of cool stars. The V-to-Fe trends exhibited by the local M dwarfs continue to challenge theoretical models of V production in the Galaxy.

- We derive a new abundance for vanadium in the bright, mildly metal-poor red giant Arcturus. This star has an excellent high-resolution spectral atlas and well-understood atmospheric parameters, and it displays a rich set of neutral vanadium lines that are available for abundance extraction. We employ a newly recorded set of laboratory FTS spectra to investigate any potential discrepancies in previously reported V I log(gf) values near 900nm. These new spectra support our earlier laboratory transition data and the calibration method utilized in that study. We then perform a synthetic spectrum analysis of weak V I features in Arcturus, deriving log{epsilon}(V)=3.54+/-0.01 ({sigma}=0.04) from 55 lines. There are no significant abundance trends with wavelength, line strength, or lower excitation energy.

- The aim of this study is to carry out an abundance determination, to search for spectral variability and for the presence of a weak magnetic field in the typical PGa star HD19400. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise HARPS spectropolarimetric observations of HD19400 were obtained at three different epochs in 2011 and 2013. For the first time, we present abundances of various elements determined using an ATLAS12 model, including the abundances of a number of elements not analysed by previous studies, such as NeI, GaII, and XeII. Several lines of As II are also present in the spectra of HD19400. To study the variability, we compared the behaviour of the line profiles of various elements. We report on the first detection of anomalous shapes of line profiles belonging to Mn, and Hg, and the variability of the line profiles belonging to the elements Hg, P, Mn, Fe, and Ga. We suggest that the variability of the line profiles of these elements is caused by their non-uniform surface distribution, similar to the presence of chemical spots detected in HgMn stars. The search for the presence of a magnetic field was carried out using the moment technique and the SVD method. Our measurements of the magnetic field with the moment technique using 22 MnII lines indicate the potential existence of a weak variable longitudinal magnetic field on the first epoch. The SVD method applied to the MnII lines indicates B_z_=-76+/-25G on the first epoch, and at the same epoch the SVD analysis of the observations using the Fe II lines shows B_z_=-91+/-35G. The calculated false alarm probability values, 0.008 and 0.003, respectively, are above the value 10^-3^, indicating no detection.
