- Description:
- Sulfur is a volatile chemical element that plays an important role in tracing the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and external galaxies. However, its nucleosynthesis origin and abundance variations in the Galaxy are still unclear because the number of available stellar sulfur abundance measurements is currently rather small. The goal of the present article is to accurately and precisely study the sulfur content of large number of stars located in the solar neighbourhood. We use the parametrisation of thousands of high-resolution stellar spectra provided by the AMBRE Project, and combine it with the automated abundance determination GAUGUIN to derive local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) sulfur abundances for 1855 slow-rotating FGK-type stars. This is the largest and most precise catalogue of sulfur abundances published to date. It covers a metallicity domain as high as ~2.5dex starting at [M/H]<~-2.0dex. We find that the sulfur-to-iron abundances ratio is compatible with a plateau-like distribution in the metal-poor regime, and then starts to decrease continuously at [M/H]~-1.0dex. This decrease continues towards negative values for supersolar metallicity stars as recently reported for magnesium and as predicted by Galactic chemical evolution models. Moreover, sulfur-rich stars having metallicities in the range [-1.0,-0.5] have very different kinematical and orbital properties with respect to more metal-rich and sulfur-poor ones. Two disc components, associated with the thin and thick discs, are thus seen independently in kinematics and sulfur abundances. The sulfur radial gradients in the Galactic discs have also been estimated. Finally, the enrichment in sulfur with respect to iron is nicely correlated with stellar ages: older metal-poor stars have higher [S/M] ratios than younger metal-rich ones. This work has confirmed that sulfur is an {alpha}-element that could be considered to explore the Galactic populations properties. For the first time, a chemo-dynamical study from the sulfur abundance point of view, as a stand-alone chemical element, is performed.

- AMBRE project. FEROS archived spectra

- Description:
- The AMBRE Project is a collaboration between the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur (OCA) that has been established in order to carry out the determination of stellar atmospheric parameters for the archived spectra of four ESO spectrographs. The analysis of the FEROS archived spectra for their stellar parameters (effective temperatures, surface gravities, global metallicities, alpha element to iron ratios and radial velocities) has been completed in the first phase of the AMBRE Project. From the complete ESO:FEROS archive dataset that was received, a total of 21551 scientific spectra have been identified, covering the period 2005 to 2010. These spectra correspond to 6285 stars. The determination of the stellar parameters was carried out using the stellar parameterisation algorithm, MATISSE (MATrix Inversion for Spectral SynthEsis), which has been developed at OCA to be used in the analysis of large scale spectroscopic studies in galactic archaeology. An analysis pipeline has been constructed that integrates spectral normalisation, cleaning and radial velocity correction procedures in order that the FEROS spectra could be analysed automatically with MATISSE to obtain the stellar parameters. The synthetic grid against which the MATISSE analysis is carried out is currently constrained to parameters of FGKM stars only. Stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity and alpha element abundances, were determined for 6508 (30.2%) of the FEROS archived spectra (~3087 stars). Radial velocities were determined for 11963 (56%) of the archived spectra. 2370 (11%) spectra could not be analysed within the pipeline due to very low signal-to-noise ratios or missing spectral orders. 12673 spectra (58.8%) were analysed in the pipeline but their parameters were discarded based on quality criteria and error analysis determined within the automated process. The majority of these rejected spectra were found to have broad spectral features, as probed both by the direct measurement of the features and cross-correlation function breadths, indicating that they may be hot and/or fast rotating stars, which are not considered within the adopted reference synthetic spectra grid. The current configuration of the synthetic spectra grid is devoted to slow-rotating FGKM stars. Hence non-standard spectra (binaries, chemically peculiar stars etc.) that could not be identified may pollute the analysis.

- AMIGA: The Circumgalactic Medium of Andromeda
- Short Name:

- Description:
- Project AMIGA (Absorption Maps In the Gas of Andromeda) is a survey of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of Andromeda (M31, R_vir_~300kpc) along 43 QSO sightlines at impact parameters 25<~R<~569kpc (25 at R<~R_vir_). We use ultraviolet absorption measurements of SiII, SiIII, SiIV, CII, and CIV from the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and OVI from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer to provide an unparalleled look at how the physical conditions and metals are distributed in the CGM of M31. We find that SiIII and OVI have a covering factor near unity for R<~1.2R_vir_ and <~1.9R_vir_, respectively, demonstrating that M31 has a very extended ~104-105.5K ionized CGM. The metal and baryon masses of the 104-105.5K CGM gas within R_vir_ are >~108 and >~4x1010 (Z/0.3Z{sun})-1M{sun}, respectively. There is not much azimuthal variation in the column densities or kinematics, but there is with R. The CGM gas at R<~0.5R_vir_ is more dynamic and has more complicated, multiphase structures than at larger radii, perhaps a result of more direct impact of galactic feedback in the inner regions of the CGM. Several absorbers are projected spatially and kinematically close to M31 dwarf satellites, but we show that those are unlikely to give rise to the observed absorption. Cosmological zoom simulations of ~L* galaxies have OVI extending well beyond R_vir_ as observed for M31 but do not reproduce well the radial column density profiles of the lower ions. However, some similar trends are also observed, such as the lower ions showing a larger dispersion in column density and stronger dependence on R than higher ions. Based on our findings, it is likely that the Milky Way has a ~104-105.5K CGM as extended as for M31 and their CGM (especially the warm-hot gas probed by OVI) are overlapping.

- A 3mm line survey in 37 IR dark clouds
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/756/60
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have observed 37 Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs), containing a total of 159 clumps, in high-density molecular tracers at 3mm using the 22m ATNF Mopra Telescope located in Australia. After determining kinematic distances, we eliminated clumps that are not located in IRDCs and clumps with a separation between them of less than one Mopra beam. Our final sample consists of 92 IRDC clumps. The most commonly detected molecular lines are (detection rates higher than 8%) N_2_H^+^, HNC, HN^13^C, HCO^+^, H^13^CO^+^, HCN, C_2_H, HC_3_N, HNCO, and SiO. We investigate the behavior of the different molecular tracers and look for chemical variations as a function of an evolutionary sequence based on Spitzer IRAC and MIPS emission. Optical depth calculations show that in IRDC clumps the N_2_H^+^ line is optically thin, the C_2_ H line is moderately optically thick, and HNC and HCO^+^ are optically thick.

- Analysis of hot Jupiters in Kepler Q2
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In this paper, we present the results of searching the Kepler Q2 public data set for the secondary eclipses of 76 hot Jupiter planet candidates from the list of 1235 candidates published by Borucki et al., 2011, Cat. J/ApJ/736/19. This search has been performed by modeling both the Kepler pre-search data conditioned light curves and new light curves produced via our own photometric pipeline. We derive new stellar and planetary parameters for each system, while calculating robust errors for both. We find 16 systems with 1{sigma}-2{sigma}, 14 systems with 2{sigma}-3{sigma}, and 6 systems with >3{sigma} confidence level secondary eclipse detections in at least one light curve produced via the Kepler pre-search data conditioned light curve or our own pipeline; however, results can vary depending on the light curve modeled and whether eccentricity is allowed to vary or not. We estimate false alarm probabilities of 31%, 10%, and 6% for the 1{sigma}-2{sigma}, 2{sigma}-3{sigma}, and >3{sigma} confidence intervals, respectively.

- 28 And & 99 Her elemental abundances
- Short Name:

- Description:
- Elemental abundances of 28 And (A7III) and 99 Her (F7V), which have modest rotational velocities, are derived in a manner consistent with previous studies in this series of papers. The values for 28 And, a δ Scuti variable, show that it is slightly metal-poor, but not a classical Am star. 99 Her, which is somewhat more metal-poor, has a rather small microturbulence for its spectral type.

- An updated catalog of M31 globular-like clusters
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/725/200
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present an updated UBVRI photometric catalog containing 970 objects in the field of M31, selected from the Revised Bologna Catalog (RBC v.4.0), including 965, 967, 965, 953, and 827 sources in the individual UBVRI bands, respectively, of which 205, 123, 14, 126, and 109 objects do not have previously published photometry. Photometry is performed using archival images from the Local Group Galaxies Survey, which covers 2.2deg^2^ along the major axis of M31. Detailed comparisons show that our photometry is fully consistent with previous measurements in all filters. We focus on 445 confirmed "globular-like" clusters and candidates, comprising typical globular and young massive clusters. The ages and masses of these objects are derived by comparing their observed spectral-energy distributions with simple stellar population synthesis. Approximately half of the clusters are younger than 2Gyr, suggesting that there has been significant recent active star formation in M31, which is consistent with previous results.

- APOGEE and Gaia DR2 analysis of IC 166
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/156/94
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- IC 166 is an intermediate-age open cluster (OC) (~1 Gyr) that lies in the transition zone of the metallicity gradient in the outer disk. Its location, combined with our very limited knowledge of its salient features, make it an interesting object of study. We present the first high-resolution spectroscopic and precise kinematical analysis of IC 166, which lies in the outer disk with R_GC_~12.7 kpc. High-resolution H-band spectra were analyzed using observations from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. We made use of the Brussels Automatic Stellar Parameter code to provide chemical abundances based on a line-by-line approach for up to eight chemical elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Al, K, Mn, and Fe). The {alpha}-element (Mg, Si, Ca, and whenever available Ti) abundances, and their trends with Fe abundances have been analyzed for a total of 13 high-likelihood cluster members. No significant abundance scatter was found in any of the chemical species studied. Combining the positional, heliocentric distance, and kinematic information, we derive, for the first time, the probable orbit of IC 166 within a Galactic model including a rotating boxy bar, and found that it is likely that IC 166 formed in the Galactic disk, supporting its nature as an unremarkable Galactic OC with an orbit bound to the Galactic plane.

- APOGEE cool stars

- Description:
- The Galactic center region, including the nuclear disk, has until recently been largely avoided in chemical census studies because of extreme extinction and stellar crowding. Large, near-IR spectroscopic surveys, such as the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), allow the measurement of metallicities in the inner region of our Galaxy. Making use of the latest APOGEE data release (DR16), we are able for the first time to study cool Asymptotic Giant branch (AGB) stars and supergiants in this region. The stellar parameters of five known AGB stars and one supergiant star (VR 5-7) show that their location is well above the tip of the red giant branch. We studied metallicities of 157 M giants situated within 150 pc of the Galactic center from observations obtained by the APOGEE survey with reliable stellar parameters from the APOGEE pipeline making use of the cool star grid down to 3200K. Distances, interstellar extinction values, and radial velocities were checked to confirm that these stars are indeed situated in the Galactic center region. We detect a clear bimodal structure in the metallicity distribution function, with a dominant metal-rich peak of [Fe/H]~+0.3dex and a metal-poor peak around {Fe/H]=-0.5dex, which is 0.2dex poorer than Baade's Window. The {alpha}-elements Mg, Si, Ca, and O show a similar trend to the Galactic bulge. The metal-poor component is enhanced in the {alpha}-elements, suggesting that this population could be associated with the classical bulge and a fast formation scenario. We find a clear signature of a rotating nuclear stellar disk and a significant fraction of high-velocity stars with v_gal_>300km/s; the metal-rich stars show a much higher rotation velocity (~200km/s) with respect to the metal-poor stars (~140km/s). The chemical abundances as well as the metallicity distribution function suggest that the nuclear stellar disk and the nuclear star cluster show distinct chemical signatures and might be formed differently.

- APOGEE DR14:Binary companions of evolved stars
- Short Name:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Multi-epoch radial velocity measurements of stars can be used to identify stellar, substellar, and planetary-mass companions. Even a small number of observation epochs can be informative about companions, though there can be multiple qualitatively different orbital solutions that fit the data. We have custom-built a Monte Carlo sampler (The Joker) that delivers reliable (and often highly multimodal) posterior samplings for companion orbital parameters given sparse radial velocity data. Here we use The Joker to perform a search for companions to 96231 red giant stars observed in the APOGEE survey (DR14) with >=3 spectroscopic epochs. We select stars with probable companions by making a cut on our posterior belief about the amplitude of the variation in stellar radial velocity induced by the orbit. We provide (1) a catalog of 320 companions for which the stellar companion's properties can be confidently determined, (2) a catalog of 4898 stars that likely have companions, but would require more observations to uniquely determine the orbital properties, and (3) posterior samplings for the full orbital parameters for all stars in the parent sample. We show the characteristics of systems with confidently determined companion properties and highlight interesting systems with candidate compact object companions.
