- Description:
- We used the large photometric database of the ASTEP program, whose primary goal was to detect exoplanets in the southern hemisphere from Antarctica, to search for eclipsing binaries (EcBs) and variable stars. 673 EcBs and 1166 variable stars were detected, including 31 previously known stars. The resulting online catalogs give the identification, the classification, the period, and the depth or semi-amplitude of each star. Data and light curves for each object are available at http://astep-vo.oca.eu/.

- BVI and RV curves of 5 eclipsing binaries

- Description:
- We detected tertiary components of close binaries from spectroscopy and light curve modelling, investigated the light-travel time effect and the possibility of magnetic activity cycles, measured mass ratios for unstudied systems, and derived absolute parameters. We carried out new photometric and spectroscopic observations of five bright close eclipsing binaries, predominantly in the southern skies. We obtained full Johnson BV light curves, which were modelled with the Wilson-Devinney code. Radial velocities were measured with the cross-correlation method using IAU radial velocity standards as spectral templates. Period changes were studied with the O-C method, utilising published epochs of minimum light (XY Leo) and ASAS photometry (VZ Lib). For three objects (DX Tuc, QY Hya, V870 Ara), absolute parameters have been determined for the first time. We spectroscopically detected the tertiary components in XY Leo and VZ Lib and discovered one in QY Hya. For XY Leo we updated the light-time effect parameters and detected a secondary periodicity of about 5100d in the O-C diagram that may hint at the existence of short-period magnetic cycles. A combination of recent photometric data shows that the orbital period of the tertiary star in VZ Lib is likely to be over 1500d. QY Hya is a semi-detached X-ray active binary in a triple system with K and M-type components, while V870 Ara is a contact binary with the third smallest spectroscopic mass ratio for a W UMa star to date. Being close to the theoretical minimum for contact binaries, this small mass ratio suggests that V870 Ara has the potential of constraining evolutionary scenarios of binary mergers. The inferred distances to these systems are compatible with the Hipparcos parallaxes.

- KIC 9777062 RVs & asteroseismology in NGC6811
- Short Name:

- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the analysis of an eccentric, partially eclipsing long-period (P=19.23 days) binary system KIC 9777062 that contains main-sequence stars near the turnoff of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 6811. The primary is a metal-lined Am star with a possible convective blueshift to its radial velocities, and one star (probably the secondary) is likely to be a {gamma} Dor pulsator. The component masses are 1.603+/-0.006(stat.)+/-0.016(sys.) and 1.419+/-0.003+/-0.008M_{sun}_, and the radii are 1.744+/-0.004+/-0.002 and 1.544+/-0.002+/-0.002R_{sun}_. The isochrone ages of the stars are mildly inconsistent: the age from the mass-radius combination for the primary (1.05+/-0.05+/-0.09Gyr, where the last quote was systematic uncertainty from models and metallicity) is smaller than that from the secondary (1.21+/-0.05+/-0.15Gyr) and is consistent with the inference from the color-magnitude diagram (1.00+/-0.05Gyr). We have improved the measurements of the asteroseismic parameters {Delta}{nu} and {nu}_max_ for helium-burning stars in the cluster. The masses of the stars appear to be larger (or alternately, the radii appear to be smaller) than predicted from isochrones using the ages derived from the eclipsing stars. The majority of stars near the cluster turnoff are pulsating stars: we identify a sample of 28 {delta} Sct, 15 {gamma} Dor, and 5 hybrid types. We used the period-luminosity relation for high-amplitude {delta} Sct stars to fit the ensemble of the strongest frequencies for the cluster members, finding (m-M)_V_=10.37+/-0.03. This is larger than most previous determinations, but smaller than values derived from the eclipsing binary (10.47+/-0.05).

- K2 periodic variables in M35 & NGC2158
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/246/15
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a catalog of 1143 periodic variables, compiled from our image-subtracted photometric analysis of the K2 Campaign-0 super stamp. This super stamp is centered on the open clusters M35 and NGC2158. Approximately 46% of our periodic variables were previously unreported. Of the catalog variables, we find that 331 are members of M35 and 56 are members of NGC 2158 (P_m_>0.5). Our catalog contains two new transiting exoplanet candidates, both of which orbit field stars. The smaller planet candidate has a radius of 0.35+/-0.04R_J_ and orbits a K dwarf (Kp=15.4mag) with a transit depth of 2.9mmag. The larger planet candidate has a radius of 0.72+/-0.02R_J_ and orbits a late G-type star (Kp=15.7mag) with a transit depth of 2.2mmag. The larger planet candidate may be an unresolved binary or a false alarm. Our catalog includes 44 eclipsing binaries (EBs), including ten new detections. Of the EBs, one is an M35 member and five are NGC 2158 members. Our catalog contains a total of 1097 nontransiting variable stars, including a field {delta} Cepheid exhibiting double mode pulsations, 561 rotational variables, and 251 pulsating variables (primarily {gamma} Doradus and {delta} Scuti types). The periods of our catalog sources range between 43 minutes to 24 days. The known ages of our reported cluster variables will facilitate investigations of a variety of stellar evolutionary processes.

- Description:
- I present BVRI photometry of short-period (P<1d) eclipsing RS CVn binary star systems collected between 1988 and 2009 at Mount Laguna Observatory. Most of the data are for ER Vul and WY Cnc, with light curves nearly every year during that time period. I also present light curves for at least several years for XY UMa, BH Vir, CG Cyg, RT And, and UV Psc. I have fewer light curves for SV Cam, UV Leo, 1E1919+0427, and GSC 2038-0293. In addition to the eclipsing short-period systems, I also include UBVRI data for two longer period non-eclipsing RS CVn binary systems: UZ Lib and DM UMa, as well as two active chromosphere single stars: FK Com and HD 199178.

- M31A eclipsing binaries and Cepheids
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We have undertaken a long-term project, DIRECT, to obtain the direct distances to two important galaxies in the cosmological distance ladder, M31 and M33, using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids. While rare and difficult to detect, DEBs provide us with the potential to determine these distances with an accuracy better than 5%. The extensive photometry obtained in order to detect DEBs provides us with good light curves for the Cepheid variables. These are essential to the parallel project to derive direct Baade-Wesselink distances to Cepheids in M31 and M33. For both Cepheids and eclipsing binaries, the distance estimates will be free of any intermediate steps. As a first step in the DIRECT project, between 1996 September and 1997 January we obtained 36 full nights on the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory 1.3m telescope and 45 full/partial nights on the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.2m telescope to search for DEBs and new Cepheids in the M31 and M33 galaxies. In this paper, second in a series, we present the catalog of variable stars, most of them newly detected, found in the field M31A [({alpha},{delta})=(11.34{deg}, 41.73{deg}), J2000.0]. We have found 75 variable stars: 15 eclipsing binaries, 43 Cepheids, and 17 other periodic, possible long-period or nonperiodic variables. The catalog of variables, as well as their photometry and finding charts, is available via anonymous ftp and the World Wide Web. The CCD frames are available upon request.

- M31Y eclipsing binaries and Cepheids

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The DIRECT Project aims to obtain direct distances to two Local Group galaxies, M31 and M33, which occupy a crucial position near the base of the cosmological distance ladder. The first step is to search for detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids using 1m class telescopes to select good candidates, which will be followed up spectroscopically on 6.510m class telescopes. In this ninth paper, we present a catalog of variable stars discovered with image subtraction in field M31Y (RA=10.97{deg}, DE=41.69{deg}; J2000.0). The data were obtained with the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory 1.2m telescope on 25 nights, over a period of 6 months. In our search covering 22x22, we discovered 41 eclipsing binaries, 126 Cepheids, and 97 other periodic or nonperiodic variables, including a luminous blue variable candidate, a nova, and a Galactic cataclysmic variable. The catalog of variables, as well as their photometry and finding charts, is available electronically via anonymous ftp and the World Wide Web, at http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/~kstanek/DIRECT . The complete set of the CCD frames is available upon request.

- New catalog of variable stars in M37 field
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/150/27
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a comprehensive re-analysis of stellar photometric variability in the field of the open cluster M37 following the application of a new photometry and de-trending method to the MMT/Megacam image archive. This new analysis allows a rare opportunity to explore photometric variability over a broad range of timescales, from minutes to a month. The intent of this work is to examine the entire sample of more than 30000 objects for periodic, aperiodic, and sporadic behaviors in their light curves. We show a modified version of the fast {chi}^2^ periodogram algorithm (F{chi}^2^) and change-point analysis as tools for detecting and assessing the significance of periodic and non-periodic variations. The benefits of our new photometry and analysis methods are evident. A total of 2306 stars exhibit convincing variations that are induced by flares, pulsations, eclipses, starspots, and unknown causes in some cases. This represents a 60% increase in the number of variables known in this field. Moreover, 30 of the previously identified variables are found to be false positives resulting from time-dependent systematic effects. The new catalog includes 61 eclipsing binary systems, 92 multiperiodic variable stars, 132 aperiodic variables, and 436 flare stars, as well as several hundreds of rotating variables. Based on extended and improved catalog of variables, we investigate the basic properties (e.g., period, amplitude, type) of all variables. The catalog can be accessed through the web interface (http://stardb.yonsei.ac.kr/).

- UBVrcIc differential photometry of V1853 Ori
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/142/117
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present precision CCD light curves, a period study, photometrically derived standard magnitudes, and a five-color simultaneous Wilson code solution of the totally eclipsing, yet shallow amplitude (Av~0.4mag) eclipsing, binary V1853 Orionis. It is determined to be an extreme mass ratio, q=0.20, W-type W UMa overcontact binary. From our standard star observations, we find that the variable is a late-type F spectral-type dwarf, with a secondary component of about 0.24 solar masses (stellar type M5V). Its long eclipse duration (41 minutes) as compared to its period, 0.383-days, attests to the small relative size of the secondary. Furthermore, it has reached a Roche lobe fill-out of ~50% of its outer critical lobe as it approaches its final stages of binary star evolution, that of a fast spinning single star. Finally, a summary of about 25 extreme mass ratio solar-type binaries is given.
