- Optical spectroscopy toward Orion B fields

- Description:
- We present results from high-resolution optical spectra toward 66 young stars in the Orion B molecular cloud to study their kinematics and other properties. Observations of the H{alpha} and Li I 6707{AA} lines are used to check membership and accretion properties. While the stellar radial velocities of NGC 2068 and L1622 are in good agreement with that of the molecular gas, many of the stars in NGC 2024 show a considerable offset. This could be a signature of either the expansion of the cluster, the high degree of the ejection of the stars from the cluster through dynamical interaction, or the acceleration of the gas due to stellar feedback.

- Origin of nuclear activity in low-power radio galaxies

- Description:
- Using large samples containing nearly 2300 active galaxies of low radio luminosity (1.4 GHz luminosity between 2x10^23^ and 3x10^25^ W/Hz, essentially low-excitation radio galaxies) at z~<0.3, we present a self-contained analysis of the dependence of the nuclear radio activity on both intrinsic and extrinsic properties of galaxies, with the goal of identifying the best predictors of the nuclear radio activity. While confirming the established result that stellar mass must play a key role on the triggering of radio activities, we point out that for the central, most massive galaxies, the radio activity also shows a strong dependence on halo mass, which is not likely due to enhanced interaction rates in denser regions in massive, cluster-scale halos. We thus further investigate the effects of various properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) in massive clusters on the radio activities, employing two standard statistical tools, principle component analysis and logistic regression. It is found that ICM entropy, local cooling time, and pressure are the most effective in predicting the radio activity, pointing to the accretion of gas cooling out of a hot atmosphere to be the likely origin in triggering such activities in galaxies residing in massive dark matter halos. Our analysis framework enables us to logically discern the mechanisms responsible for the radio activity separately for central and satellite galaxies.

- Parallaxes of late-T and Y dwarfs
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/240/19
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present preliminary trigonometric parallaxes of 184 late-T and Y dwarfs using observations from Spitzer (143), the U.S. Naval Observatory (18), the New Technology Telescope (14), and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (9). To complete the 20pc census of >=T6 dwarfs, we combine these measurements with previously published trigonometric parallaxes for an additional 44 objects and spectrophotometric distance estimates for another 7. For these 235 objects, we estimate temperatures, sift into five 150K wide T_eff_ bins covering the range 300-1050K, determine the completeness limit for each, and compute space densities. To anchor the high-mass end of the brown dwarf mass spectrum, we compile a list of early- to mid-L dwarfs within 20pc. We run simulations using various functional forms of the mass function passed through two different sets of evolutionary code to compute predicted distributions in T_eff_. The best fit of these predictions to our L, T, and Y observations is a simple power-law model with {alpha}~0.6 (where dN/dM{propto}M^-{alpha}^), meaning that the slope of the field substellar mass function is in rough agreement with that found for brown dwarfs in nearby star-forming regions and young clusters. Furthermore, we find that published versions of the log-normal form do not predict the steady rise seen in the space densities from 1050 to 350K. We also find that the low-mass cutoff to formation, if one exists, is lower than ~5M_Jup_, which corroborates findings in young, nearby moving groups and implies that extremely low-mass objects have been forming over the lifetime of the Milky Way.

- Parameters & abundances for Hyades/Field G-K dwarfs
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/159/174
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- It has been suggested that Fe abundances of K dwarfs derived from FeI and FeII lines show considerable discrepancies, and oxygen abundances determined from high-excitation OI-7771-5 triplet lines are appreciably overestimated (the problem becoming more serious toward lower Teff), which, however, has not yet been widely confirmed. With the aim of clarifying this issue, we spectroscopically determined the atmospheric parameters of 148 G-K dwarfs (Hyades cluster stars and field stars) by assuming the classical FeI/FeII ionization equilibrium as usual, and determined their oxygen abundances by applying the non-local thermal equilibrium spectrum fitting analysis to OI-7771-5 lines. It turned out that the resulting parameters did not show any significant inconsistency with those determined by other methods (for example, the mean differences in Teff and logg from the well-determined solutions of Hyades dwarfs are mostly <~100K and <~0.1dex). Likewise, the oxygen abundances of Hyades stars are around [O/H]~+0.2dex (consistent with the metallicity of this cluster) without exhibiting any systematic Teff-dependence. Accordingly, we conclude that parameters can be spectroscopically evaluated to a sufficient precision in the conventional manner (based on the Saha-Boltzmann equation for FeI/FeII) and oxygen abundances can be reliably determined from the OI-7771-5 triplet for K dwarfs as far as stars of Teff>~4500K are concerned. We suspect that previously reported strongly Teff-dependent discrepancies may have stemmed mainly from overestimation of weak-line strengths and/or improper Teff scale.

- Parameters estimation for 173 eclipsing binaries
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/162/13
- Date:
- 21 Mar 2022 00:50:18
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- High precision CCD observations of six totally eclipsing contact binaries were presented and analyzed. It is found that only one target is an A-type contact binary (V429Cam), while the others are W-type contact ones. By analyzing the times of light minima, we discovered that two of them exhibit secular period increase while three manifest long-term period decrease. For V1033Her, a cyclic variation superimposed on the long-term increase was discovered. By comparing the Gaia distances with those calculated by the absolute parameters of 173 contact binaries, we found that the Gaia distance can be applied to estimate the absolute parameters for most contact binaries. The absolute parameters of our six targets were estimated using their Gaia distances. The evolutionary status of contact binaries was studied, and we found that the A- and W-subtype contact binaries may have different formation channels. The relationship between the spectroscopic and photometric mass ratios for 101 contact binaries was presented. It was discovered that the photometric mass ratios are in good agreement with the spectroscopic ones for almost all of the totally eclipsing systems, which is corresponding to the results derived by Pribulla et al. and Terrell & Wilson.

- PAST. II. LAMOST-Gaia-Kepler catalog of 35835 stars
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/162/100

- Description:
- The Kepler telescope has discovered over 4000 planets (candidates) by searching ~200000 stars over a wide range of distance (order of kpc) in our Galaxy. Characterizing the kinematic properties (e.g., Galactic component membership and kinematic age) of these Kepler targets (including the planet candidate hosts) is the first step toward studying Kepler planets in the Galactic context, which will reveal fresh insights into planet formation and evolution. In this paper, the second part of the Planets Across the Space and Time (PAST) series, by combining the data from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and Gaia and then applying the revised kinematic methods from PAST I, we present a catalog of kinematic properties (i.e., Galactic positions, velocities, and the relative membership probabilities among the thin disk, thick disk, Hercules stream, and the halo) as well as other basic stellar parameters for 35835 Kepler stars. Further analyses of the LAMOST-Gaia-Kepler catalog demonstrate that our derived kinematic age reveals the expected stellar activity-age trend. Furthermore, we find that the fraction of thin (thick) disk stars increases (decreases) with the transiting planet multiplicity (N_p_=0,1,2 and3+) and the kinematic age decreases with N_p_, which could be a consequence of the dynamical evolution of planetary architecture with age. The LAMOST-Gaia-Kepler catalog will be useful for future studies on the correlations between the exoplanet distributions and the stellar Galactic environments as well as ages.

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We report the discovery of two short-period Saturn-mass planets, one transiting the G subgiant TOI-954 (TIC44792534, V=10.343, T=9.78) observed in TESS sectors 4 and 5 and one transiting the G dwarf K2-329 (EPIC246193072, V=12.70, K=10.67) observed in K2 campaigns 12 and 19. We confirm and characterize these two planets with a variety of ground-based archival and follow-up observations, including photometry, reconnaissance spectroscopy, precise radial velocity, and high-resolution imaging. Combining all available data, we find that TOI-954b has a radius of 0.852_-0.062_^+0.053^R_Jup_ and a mass of 0.174_-0.017_^+0.018^M_Jup_ and is in a 3.68day orbit, while K2-329b has a radius of 0.774_-0.024_^+0.026^R_Jup_ and a mass of 0.260_-0.022_^+0.020^M_Jup_ and is in a 12.46day orbit. As TOI-954b is 30 times more irradiated than K2-329b but more or less the same size, these two planets provide an opportunity to test whether irradiation leads to inflation of Saturn-mass planets and contribute to future comparative studies that explore Saturn-mass planets at contrasting points in their lifetimes.

- Photometric study of fourteen low-mass binaries
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/154/30
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- New CCD photometric observations of fourteen short-period low-mass eclipsing binaries (LMBs) in the photometric filters I, R, and V were used for a light curve analysis. A discrepancy remains between observed radii and those derived from the theoretical modeling for LMBs, in general. Mass calibration of all observed LMBs was performed using only the photometric indices. The light curve modeling of these selected systems was completed, yielding the new derived masses and radii for both components. We compared these systems with the compilation of other known double-lined LMB systems with uncertainties of masses and radii less then 5%, which includes 66 components of binaries where both spectroscopy and photometry were combined together. All of our systems are circular short-period binaries, and for some of them, the photospheric spots were also used. A purely photometric study of the light curves without spectroscopy seems unable to achieve high enough precision and accuracy in the masses and radii to act as meaningful test of the M-R relation for low-mass stars.

- Photometry and spectroscopy of stars in Cz 30
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/150/200
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present new photometric and spectroscopic data of the old open cluster Czernik 30. Wide field BVI photometry allows us to correct for the high field contamination by statistical subtraction to produce a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) that clearly reveals the cluster sequence. From spectra of stars in the cluster field obtained with the Hydra spectrograph on the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO 3.5m telescope we determine a mean cluster velocity of +79.9+/-1.5km/s and provide membership information that helps further define the cluster giant branch and red clump. Stellar abundances for the brighter giants in the cluster indicate a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.2+/-0.15. Fitting theoretical isochrones to the CMD we determine the following properties of Czernik 30: age=2.8+/-0.3Gyr, (m-M)_v_=14.8+/-0.1, E(B-V)=0.24+/-0.06, and E(V-I)=0.36+/-0.04. Czernik 30 is an old, sub-solar metallicity cluster located at a Galactocentric radius of R_gc_~13.3kpc. Given its age and position just beyond the transition to a flat abundance gradient seen in the open cluster population, Czernik 30 provides an interesting target for future observations.

- Physical parameters of PMS in open clusters
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/531/A141
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Our aims are twofold: To determine the physical parameters of PMS members in young open clusters (YOCs), and to check and compare the performances of different model isochrones. We compare UBVRI photometric observations of eleven YOCs to theoretical isochrones in the photometric diagrams. The comparison simultaneously provides membership assignments for MS and PMS stars and estimates for the masses, ages, and spatial distribution of the candidate members. The relations found between the different cluster parameters show that the procedure applied to assign cluster membership, and to measure physical parameters for the selected members, is well founded.
